Notes
- Abstract:
- This study, sponsored by the Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC) through the Bechtel Fellowship, was conducted in the Smather's Library's Special Collection Department, University of Florida in February 2011. The purpose of the study was to see when board books for young children (before age 5) first appeared, and if there was an evolution in content from the early beginnings to the present day. Ultimately I am interested in understanding when board books went from being considered simply "toys" to becoming important early literacy tools. That question cannot be answered by simply looking at the extensive collection of books in the Baldwin Collection, however, knowing the publishing history, will help in further conducting further research.
