General Note: As exhibited in "X: A Decade of Collecting", September 1, 2005-January 15, 2006: Tapestry, 1923 / Designed by Dirk Verstraten (Dutch, 1892-1946) / Made by Kinheim, Beverwijk, Germany / Wool, cotton / Gift of Galerie Frans Leidelmeijer; 1995.13.1 / Dirk Verstraten designed this commemorative textile for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the coronation of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, crowned September 6, 1898. The queen's silver jubilee was marked by a formal address at the Olympic Stadium and celebrations that included exhibitions, parties, and the production of numerous commemorative items. Produced as a limited edition, this tapestry's pattern of geometric shapes represents a shining crown atop a triangle bearing the initial "W" and the date September 6, 1923. This was one the few modernist designs ever produced by Kinheim, a German manufacturer in Beverwijk known for its traditional, hand-made tapestries.
