What's Really Important In Water Management

A graphics report from one of the discussion groups at the Water
Management Seminar in Vail, Colorado, January 9-17, 1988.

The group consisted of:
Len Lindahl, Leader
Don McEwen, Reporter
Kevin Erwin
Jack Maloy
Howard Searcy

The group obviously is quite diverse, and probably is not without
a prejudice or a bias or two, but we are indebted to Don McEwen
for following up with Kevin Erwin's suggestion to prepare a table
and graph on a computer summarizing the conclusions from the
Thursday afternoon discussion group. It might be interesting to
repeat the exercise this year and compare our perceptions from
the two years.

The discussion group task was to list ten things that are
important to water management in Florida. It was then to narrow
the list to the five most important. This group actually
developed a list of twelve (12) areas that they felt were
important.

In attempting to narrow the list to the five most important areas
of interest, they realized that the list depended greatly upon
the point of view. For example, the five most important areas to
the environmental community is very different from those of the
business community. Consequently, they attempted to chose the
top five categories from nine (9) different points of view.
Three of the viewpoints were narrowed to four areas while two
viewpoints could only be narrowed to six areas. The original
list was then ranked by overall interest.

The table on the next page represents the twelve fundamental
areas of interest to water management in Florida, as represented
by their perception from nine (9) different points of view. The
table is ordered from high to low based upon the overall
importance of the topic from the most viewpoints. Associated
with the table is a bar chart that represents the number of times
the topic appeared in the top five (4-6) areas of importance in
the nine points of view.
