Monson Motor Lodge
SA 14

On April 23, 2003 had City backhoe open up a new area behind SA 13 in the hopes of defining the east wall of a structure, as well as backyard features. The south wall of the structure was identified in SA 13. SA 14 was intended to locate the east wall. Mechanical stripping involved opening up an area measuring roughly 7.7 m (east-west) by 2 m (north-south), see map. The upper layer of fill was removed (approximately 40 cm). This layer corresponds to fill brought in to elevate the property when the 1950s Monson was constructed, as well as soil that had been disturbed by that construction. Mechanical excavation was taken down to where the soil turned a brownish-gray (kind-of ashy). Artifacts observed during this procedure where primarily 19th in origin. In addition to removing this upper layer of deposits, a trench was dug to determine the nature of the remaining 'buried soil deposits (see map). Once mechanical excavation stopped the area was shovel scrapped to determine whether any features were present. Except for a trash deposit at the east end of the 7.7m long trench, no other features were observed. This, however, is partially do to the dark organic nature of the fill itself that makes features difficult to distinguish.

On April 24, 2003, started excavation. The trench was divided into three test units. Because the water table was high and the well points that the contractor had installed were not operational, the excavation could only go down 10 to 15 cm. Test unit 1 was situated at the west end of the trench (see map) and was excavated to a depth of 135 cm BD. (Ten centimeters of midden was removed from this 3 m long segment of SA 14 and is referred to as level 2 [124-135].) All the soil was screened. It was observed that the soil along this area of the trench was an ashy gray-brown sandy-loam (highly organic) that contained abundant small artifacts (pottery, bone, metal, glass) suggesting that it may have been a garden area. The entire level was excavated.

Test unit 2 was at the east end of the trench. It measured roughly 1.5 m in length. Within this unit were trash deposits associated with 19" century activities: a shell deposit and a rubble/artifact deposit. The shell deposit (labeled as Fea. 175) was only partially exposed. It appears to be a circular, saucer shape depression, with a depth of about 20 cm. Adjacent to the shell concentration was an area of scattered debris, which includes a complete ginger beer bottle. Because of the thickness of this unit (the upper elevation

started at 114 cm BD) two levels were excavated: Level 2 from (114-123 cm BD) and Level 3 (123-135 cm BD). Dividing these two levels was the remains of a tabby surface, which was very intermittent. Soil along this portion of the trench was more brown in coloration and grainy in texture. What this represents is unclear, but hopefully further excavation will provide an answer.

The east wall of the coquina stone foundation was not found in SA 14. The wall must occur near the ending point documented in SA 13.
