Notes

Abstract:
Schadenfreude is happiness at the downfall of another. Any time a person experiences joy when someone else has failed or been embarrassed, he or she is experiencing Schadenfreude.  Sometimes that misfortune comes from humorous circumstances, and sometimes that downfall is serious harm.  Schadenfreude is a social emotion, distinct from envy, which has been measured in the context of interpersonal emotions, intergroup emotions, politics, neuropsychology, and consumer behavior.  The current research developed a trait measure of Schadenfreude.  The first study used exploratory factor analysis to establish a 12-item measure, and the second study used confirmatory factor analysis to examine the factor structure of that measure.  The third study demonstrated strong test-retest reliability, and the fourth study addressed convergent validity.  The fifth study found a positive correlation between episodic-but not trait-Schadenfreude on spreading news of politicians' downfalls.
