Notes

Abstract:
This study sought to test if Ethnographic Linear Programming was an appropriate economic development tool for individual farmers working in the Monteverde coffee-production sector. Monteverde is a small, mountainous region in western Costa Rica boasting a strong ecotourism industry that brings new economic opportunities for farmers but has also increased the cost of living. The Ethnographic Linear Program, or ELP, is an optimization program which in this study utilizes Microsoft Excel to evaluate coffee production strategies in light of budget constraints and solve for maximizing farm profits at the end of a five-year model. Data for the program was taken from on-site informal interviews with coffee farmers in the region. Testing quantified the importance of the first year in the health of the five-year enterprise but limitations in the ability to predict coffee prices in the long run lead to the recommendation that Ethnographic Linear Programming as an economic development strategy is effective only in the short run.
