Notes

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to investigate how a counter-hegemonic beauty aesthetic, the adoption of natural hair, is being diffused to Black women. Hairstyles in which the hair is kept in its natural, afro-textured state seem to be returning in popularity among Black women despite the fact that such hairstyles go against both the dominant standards of beauty and standards of beauty held by many within the Black community. In this study, with Diffusion of Innovations Theory and Uses and Gratifications Theory forming the theoretical framework, I will investigate Black women’s perceptions of natural hair. I will also investigate YouTube’s role as a communication channel for the diffusion of natural hair as an innovation, and as a virtual community and meeting space for Black women who decide to go natural. In-depth interviews will be conducted. In addition user comments from YouTube’s most subscribed to natural hair channel, Naptural85, will be qualitatively content analyzed.
