Abstract:
This dissertation argues that the Portuguese Jews of the early modern Caribbean are best understood as an Americas religious community. In making this argument, I seek to rectify substantial short comings in the historiographic treatment of the first Jewish communities in the Americas. Despite some recent scholarship that examines Caribbean Jews as an ethno-religious community, and despite a great deal of current interest in religious authority in the context of nineteenth century Ashkenazi migration to the Americas, religious practices and authority among the Sephardic Jews of Curaçao and other Americas settlements have been relegated to the margins by an approach that emphasizes mercantile and economic development. By employing the analytic framework of religion, I argue that we are better able to grasp the development of an Americas religious community. In doing so I focus on the relationship between the Curaçao community and other Portuguese Jewish communities, the role of diaspora identity, and the complicated intersection of race, religion, and nation for Portuguese Jews in the early modern Atlantic world.
