GET READY FOR THE TRIENNIAL OF THE
MILLENNIUM!

)5o assure purseff a space, make your hotel
reservations nowf!! See p.2 for more information.

Dear ACASA members,

This last April, I had the opportunity to make a
site visit to the Virgin Islands in preparation
for the 12th Triennial Symposium on African
Art to be held in St. Thomas, April 25-29, 2001. The
trip was coupled with several presentations that both
Allen Roberts and I were invited to give at a local
school and the university. It was an outstanding trip,
with a great deal of work accomplished, and many
important contacts made-thanks once again to the
excellent planning and groundwork laid by Dr. Robert
Nicholls, our local organizer and ACASA liaison.

First of all, for those

of you who have not
1 yet been there, the
3 Virgin Islands are
4 beautiful. St. Thomas
5 is mountainous and
6 lush, and the people
6 are extremely warm
7 and friendly. We
7 were truly taken by
INSERT the hospitality of the
islanders, and by the
excitement and

commitment to the Triennial on the part of many
individuals and institutions. The buzz of Carnival was
in the air, and there was enthusiasm everywhere we
turned. With Robert Nicholls, I met with the very
impressive Virgin Islands Triennial Steering
Committee, whose distinguished and dynamic
members will participate on every level and at every
stage with the planning and organization of the event.

W e made important contact with the University of
the Virgin Islands (UVI), our official host for
the Triennial, and the only HBCU located outside the
continental US. UVI President, Dr. Orville Kean, and
his Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Denis
Paul, escorted us to the Carnival Village before
hosting us to dinner at a lovely restaurant overlooking
the harbor. We also had a luncheon with Ed Thomas,
Director of the West Indian Company (WICO), one of
the principal Triennial sponsors, and a meeting with
Magda Smith and her associate at the Virgin Islands
Humanities Council (VICH), also a sponsor of the
Triennial meetings. The African Association, whose
current President is Dr. Solomon Kabuka, hosted a
reception attended,by their membership, and at which
I gave an informal but detailed presentation on the
Triennial. The African Association will host one of the
receptions during the Triennial, and some of its
members will participate in panel formation to include
local scholarship.

rhe site for the meetings will be the Marriott
I Frenchman's Reef, a gorgeous, newly renovated
beach resort overlooking the harbor. It has pleasant,
cheerful rooms, fully equipped with coffee makers,
irons, refrigerators, ice makers, and a patio with
chairs. Most rooms have a water view, while others
face lush hills. We also toured the seminar rooms,
plenary session room, rooms for book and video
displays, a board meeting room, and a banquet hall
where the Awards Banquet will be held during the
magnificent Fireworks Display that marks the
culmination of Carnival each year. The hotel is
beautifully situated, with lots of open spaces for
mingling.

ACASA has just signed a contract with the hotel for
our room blocks and meeting rooms. This contract
depends on your early commitment. The Marriott
Frenchman's Reef is a resort property, not a city
hotel, and we must be able to guarantee our room
blocks well in advance, so please make your

reservations now (see hotel reservation form insert; a
separate conference registration form will be printed
in the December issue).

Monday, May 3rd, was a memorable day. We were
escorted that day by Myron Jackson, senior planner
for VI Planning and Natural Resources where he
oversees archaeology and historic preservation. First,
Myron, Al Roberts and I gave presentations to the Art
Club of the Charlotte Amalie High School. It was a
wonderful experience to speak to young people on St.
Thomas about African heritage and art. Then, we
were interviewed for an hour-long talk-radio show,
called the Leona Bryant show, broadcast throughout
the islands, during which the three of us and Robert
Nicholls spoke about African studies in the U.S. and
overseas, Triennial plans, ACASA's mission and
membership, Carnival's connections to Africa, and
many other topics. Finally, that day, Al and I gave an
hour-long, well-attended Post-Carnival Colloquium on
Educational Foundations at the University of the
Virgin Islands on our central African research, entitled
"Historic Information Systems of the Luba of Congo,"
that was telecast to the St. Croix campus as well.

The site visit was scheduled to coincide with the exact
weekend of Carnival when the Triennial will be held
two years from now. On Friday and Saturday, my
family and I attended both the Children's Parade and
the Adult Parade. It was very exciting. ACASA
members will LVE the context of Carnival for the
Triennial. It is very exhilarating, and you can get right
into town on a little boat from the hotel for a few
dollars. It is a good way to avoid the traffic on the
main road into town, but the boat runs only in the
daytime.

During our visit, Robert Nicholls was presented
with an award for outstanding Scholarly
Research by The University of the Virgin Islands
where he is a Professor. It was in recognition of his
work on Carnival, as published in his book, Old-Time
Masquerading in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He will
also have an article coming out soon in African Arts,
if you want to learn more about Virgin Islands
Carnival in preparation for the Triennial! We are very
grateful to Robert for mobilizing the forces so
effectively and diplomatically in the Virgin Islands.
We have many exciting things to look forward to in
2001, but we must immediately get cracking on our
fund-raising drive, Triennial panel planning and

outreach day goals. wYou, as members, can help to
make this Triennial successful by doing two things:
(making your totel reservations right away, and
@ sending in your panel proposals...now!

The Triennial Program Committee has formed a rich
and pertinent theme for the first Triennial of the new
millennium, and the first Triennial ever to be held
outside the continental United States! Be a part of this
historic event! (See below for more details on the
panel proposal submissions)0

V
FIRST CALL FOR PANEL PROPOSALS

12th Triennial Symposium on African Art
St. Thomas, Virtin Islands
April 25-29, 2C)1

TRANSITIONS, PASSAGES, and CONFLUENCES

"T e first ACASA triennial symposium of the new
millennium is also the first to be held outside of
the United States. The setting of the conference
in the Caribbean inspired its theme: Transitions,
Passages, and Confluences. It is an inclusive theme
that encourages the investigation of transformations in
the arts of the African continent and the African
diasporas. The initial call is meant to invite early
panel proposals.

These proposals will be published in the December
issue of the ACASA Newsletter. This will allow
enough time for paper proposals and setting up the
program. A second call for panels and a first call for
papers will be issued in the December Newsletter with
a firm deadline. This will be followed with a final call
for paper proposals. Martha Anderson and Eli Bentor
(co-chairs of the Triennial Program Committee) intend
to finalize the program early.

Panelproposals should include:

Please submit panel proposals to: Martha Anderson,
Co-Chair, Triennial Program Committee, by email
(fanderson@alfredaedu) or by mail to: Martha
Anderson, 64 West University Street, Alfred, N.Y.
14802, USA.

CASA Board: Nomination
)Elections to be held at the ASA meeting this
November in Philadelphial

* Michael Conner
I am delighted to accept a nomination to serve on the
ACASA Board. I attended ACASA's founding meeting in
1979. In those early years I supported its operations as a
student "gofer," later as a member and chair of scholarly
panels, and now as Managing Editor of H-AfrArts-
ACASA's official Listserv and website.

The promise and vision of an Arts Council dedicated to
serve as a meeting place for those who wish to study, a
collect and write about African art was great in the '70s.
However, it will be even more so in the next decade when
ACASA will have the technical ability to exchange
information with a global community in real time over the
Internet.

Unfortunately, not everyone will have equal access to this
technology (for example, much of Africa and Traditionally
Black Colleges and Universities [TBCUs]). In this regard, I
strongly support international initiatives which promise to
forge greater diversity of access to the Internet. I represent
ACASA on a coalition of four organizations-H-Net, the
Kennedy Center, the University of Wisconsin, and
ACASA-which is laying plans to pioneer a Web-based
international clearinghouse of information to facilitate
cultural touring and exchange opportunities for African
artists.

I am also Curator and Associate Professor in Museum
Studies and Cultural Preservation at Southern University
at New Orleans. SUNO has a collection of African art, an
archive of African and African-American resources. I will
therefore be bringing to the Board a special concern for a
broader African cultural representation in museums, and
an abiding desire for a scholarly approach to diversity in
the public school curriculum.

* Emily Hanna
I am honored to have been nominated for the ACASA
Board of Directors. I have been a member of ACASA for
about eleven years, and would be pleased to offer
something back to an organization that has served me

well as a scholar and a teacher. I look forward to working
toward the continued success of this group, and will
dedicate my time, attention, and skills, as they may best
serve.

* Babatunde Lawal
I welcome the opportunity to serve on the ACASA board.
Over the years, I have been proud of ACASA's activities-
they have been very effective in promoting a better
understanding and appreciation of African art. The Arnold
Rubin Award for outstanding publications in African art
reflects the high standards that the association expects of
its members. I am aware that the ACASA board is looking
into ways and means of reaching a wider audience and
encouraging "greater dialogue and collaboration" among
scholars of African and African Diaspora art within and
outside the U.S.A., especially those resident in Africa.

If elected, I hope to contribute to the realization of these
goals and others that may arise in the next millennium. I
currently serve on the editorial board of the Art Bulletin, a
quarterly published by the CAA, with which ACASA is
affiliated. I look forward to forging closer ties between
ACASA and CAA.
