Prefectura Building

The reason tiat the prefecture was not built for so many years n-ver
finished was because the Interdente Flavie Batista in 1900 took away the stones
which the "pretos" had piled up to build the church of Sao Benedicto. This church
is that of S.S. "petos" were angry. They put a "maldicao" on the build.rI.g,
thus it remained unfiiiished for more than 30 years. iMunicipality was in debt 100
contos for unfinished building until first go vern-uent of Barata who excused this
debt.

The present Governor, Mouro. (lurvUlho, in his campaign ipt,-ch.js promised to
excuse the present debt of 700 contos, mostly resulting fri!r the building but
as yet he has not uone so.

Why Gurupa does not progress

The reason that Gurup& does not progress is said to be caused by the fact
that they beat a Padre here. It took place about 40 "e'."s ago when N wife
was a small girl. Padre Manuel Sai'un.Io was the "vig.rio" in Guruph. He began to
preach ag tinst politicians and a .J alt so:e of the strrng families. One day during
the Festa de S. L.nedictj, they crFu-t him inside the church just after his sermon.
He was beaten and jailed. As he was jailed he placed a "maldicSf" on his persecutors -
Capitao M'!crhado Deligado de Policia refused to give him food. Machi-do never ate
after that as soon as he would sat he vomited. He never ate again. Joao de
Almeida, the Ilte1hfente, refused him water, andra e died from "barriga de agva".
After that the "pretos" of the Irmandade de S. B. went with him as a .rd to the
church and stood guard over his house, he left a "alndi;co on Gl.ruph.

Historical IJotes (C'.i b.4 p.y) .iarinho 1nd E.Veiga

According to .irinho, the recent history of iiurupa ki.e. l0oO to
the present) has been characterized by movement, or flux or rural
population from north to the south or then south to north side of the
river as the price of rubber rises and falls. This might be charac-
terized by movement, in general, Irom ruober side (varzea) to agri-
cultural side (tear& firme) .Irirnho remembers th..t the period of lot0
1900 was a period of agriculture; 1900-12 period of ruober when people
b egan moving out of Itapereira, Jacupi to other side of the river. Fr
r'roi- lj12-16 movement came back to this side and iurups had farinhi to
export, during world war I). From 1916-21 slight rise verify rubber
prices) and again people left "terra fire" and farinha was imported.
1922-41 period of low rubber prices and preo.ounated agriculture;
1i414tL rubber; 19iL4-46 was period of timbo and timborana and.people
left rurupa to go to Xingu where tiLbo was plentiful. /1945 timb
paid Ch,:2,00 per Kilo in iurupa and CU.-.50 on board/. 1947 begah
movement back to agriculture. Itapereira had 4 "moradores ir begin*
ning of 1947 and now has 15. E1ch day people appear to ask for agri-
cultural lands with plans of aoandonning rubber.

Gurupa'(G. cad.2 p.22)

Coronel boaventura descreve Gurupa como cheia de casas nas
tres ruas. Consider a. administragao dos pirmeiro intendentes da
Republican as melhores. Os da agora so querem roubar. Tinha para
mais de 20 casa de comercio. Tudo judeu, so dois brasileiros. Pa-
ra matar boi e vender tinha que chamar o "caraasco" deles porque
judeu so come rez degolaaa.
S.Benedito
etapara ser tao rico quanto S.Antonio do Caninde.
