Introduction
The purpose of this architectural survey was to locate buildings
of historical design merit for urban renewal possibilities. A
"windshield" evaluation was conducted, concerning itself with exterior
architectural and urban qualities of the area. To this extent,
we have located not only the exceptional buildings, but the better
examples of typical structures in the area. By locating these
noteworthy buildings it is hoped that attempts will be made to
save the character of their neighborhoods through restoration and
rehabilitation.
The most difficult problem in surveying buildings of a variety
of styles and uses is finding a common ground for comparison.
In many cases, this became impossible. The context for rating a
structure depends upon the buildings in the immediate surroundings
rather than the whole renewal area. This insures the representation
of examples having variations in details unique to a distinct local.
The rating system was divided into three categories for simplicity.
Salvage: This classification marked in red on the maps show
the buildings of least importance. These buildings were unusually
poor/fair examples of a style in the area. They do contain good
details; posts, capitals, and/or palings etc. In some cases, the
surveyor was led to believe that there was something worth saving
in the interior.
This category differs from most surveys since it deals directly
with the inventory needs of large scale restoration projects. The
availability of parts necessary for restoration is important to
insure accuracy and authenticity.
Obviously, ani building rated higher than salvage should be
investigated for parts if it is not to be saved in its entirity.
Good: The large bulk of the survey findings were in this
group. These buildings are usually good examples of a style,
having good proportions and basically unaltered. Others in this
category are buildings of fair design quality but having excellent
details. Two other considerations were used for evaluation in this
classification. The rating could be purely architectural because the
location was undesirable. The opposite case was possible also.
If a structure was located next to an excellent building, and was
harmonious with it in either scale or style, as well as setting it,
deserved this rating.

Excellent: These structures are the best examples of the
styles represented. They contain not only good proportions, but
details of quality as well. In some cases the setting was excep-
tional, thus making it a more desirable building than its twin
somewhere else. One-of-a-kind structures if executed well are
included. Unique buildings are desirable to save to show the
variety of designs in the area.
The criteria for selection of these structures in the final
analysis was a subjective decision on the part of the surveyors.
This decision was based on the design experience of the surveyors
and their exposure to urban architecture. To ensure as honest an
appraisal as possible, each area was scrutinized several times,
both in the field and three photographs and maps at the school.
Each building was located and evaluated in the field by the survey
team. It was then reevaluated and photographed by the survey
supervisors. The final rating was based upon field and photo-
graphic investigation by both the supervisors and faculty advisors.
