dLOC Member Renewal Update July 24, 2018 Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC) 1 dLOC hosts ACURIL's Mid!Year meeting and social media fundraising event This year dLOC had the opportunity to support the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries !ACURIL" by hosting their Mid #Year meeting at Florida International University FIU The event provided a platform to support fundraising efforts through a social media campaign to aid Caribbean libraries, archives, and museums affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria during the last Hurricane season. DLOC NEWS Caribbean Recovery, Relief, and Rebuild Initiative Our Caribbean community was heavily impacted by natural disasters during the 2017 Hurricane season. Shortly after hurricane Irma and Maria, dLOC mobilized communications with our friends and colleagues abroad to offer our support with recovery, relief, and rebuilding efforts in affected areas. dLOC worked closely with FIU Libraries, Michael Dowling from the American Library Association ALA and Cheryl Peltier# Davis from University of the West Indies # St. Augustine !UWI" to ship 22 desktop computers and monitors to Phillipsburg Jubilee Library in Saint Maarten. Full recovery from natural disasters often takes time, and we will continue to work with our partners in helping the Caribbean community. For more information, visit:


dLOC Member Renewal Update July 24, 2018 Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC) 2 A Special Welcome to Hadassah St. Hubert Hadassah St. Hubert received her Ph.D. in History from the University of Miami. Her dissertation, "Visions of a Modern Nation: Haiti at the World's fairs," focuses on Haiti's participation in world's fairs and expositions in the twentieth century. As the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) Postdoctoral Fellow in Data Curation for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, she will lead programming and digitization efforts in collaboration with Digital Library of the Caribbean's (dLOC's) partner, L'Institut de Sauvegarde du Patrimoine National (ISPAN). In this cooperative project, she will provide training and expert technical assistance to ISPAN in its digitization efforts. In addition, she will increase access to and preserve Haitian information resources at ISPAN by digitizing archives, mapping sites, and making the archive available in English, French, and Haitian Creole. dLOC partnered with artist Xavier Cortada to host an Earth Day celebration across Miami# Dade County Public Schools. Selected schools participated in planting a native tree on their campus, as well as designing their own Earth Day ags. Cortada has been working with dLOC toward making his K# 12 participatory art projects and educational resources accessible to the entire Caribbean community. dLOC Celebrates Earth Day!


dLOC Member Renewal Update July 24, 2018 Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC) 3 Central Bureau of Statistics Curaao "CBS# CBS is the independent and o $ cially recognized provider of relevant statistical information on all social, demographic and economic areas in Curaao. The Bureau wants to reach this goal with employing well# educated and well# motivated personnel, and get acquainted with the latest technological and methodological processing techniques. National Archives of Guyana The National Archives of Guyana was established in 1958 and holds a vast quantity of historical data valuable to the overall national development thrust of the country. Records include manuscripts, newspapers, pictures, paintings, documents, printed materials, books, maps, and drawings. Their mission is to acquire and preserve all public records that are of value for historical or o$ cial purposes. University of Guyana "UG# UG is Guyana's sole national higher education institution. The Caribbean Research Library CRL is a Special Collection of Rare Materials housed within the University of Guyana Library that consists of some of the rarest books of historical value, maps of British Guiana, manuscripts, typescripts, audio and video collections that are peculiar to Guyana and the Caribbean that may not be found elsewhere. Jamaica Theological Seminary & Caribbean Graduate School of Theology "JTS# JTS was founded in 1886 through the e% orts of two distinguished rabbis, Dr. Sabato Morais and Dr. H. Pereira Mendes, along with a group of prominent lay leaders from Sephardic congregations in Philadelphia and New York. JTS's collection contains materials related to the socio regions' history and practice in Jamaica and the Caribbean including newsletters, publications, and research materials. New Partners Moravian Archives The Moravian Archives holds records from the Moravian Church, Eastern West Indies Province EWI ; including Antigua, St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago from 1728# 1960s. The Moravian Archives also holds records from the boards overseeing missions in the West Indies, Jamaica, and Suriname 1708 # 1960s
