By B.C. Manion firstname.lastname@example.org Three local teens are among 10 finalists in an international robotics competition and expect to find out soon if theyve captured the top prize. The 14-year-olds Sean Carr, Ross Edwards and R.J. Walters just wrapped up the second phase of the X Prize After Earth competition. The contest winner announcement is scheduled for around Aug. 9. The competition is based on the movie, After Earth, starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith. The sponsor, X Prize Foundation, uses competitions to address the worlds grand challenges, according to its website. In this case, the teams explored ways to make earth more sustainable and how to use robotics to explore the potential for a new settlement for humans. No matter the outcome, the three young men who are members of the Trinity Dragons robotics team said theyve enjoyed the challenge. Theyve designed and built a robot that can scoot across a surface, can lift small buckets and deliver them to where they need to go and then can return to its base. While the robot seemingly acts on its own, it actually completes its work through Lutz NEWS FREE Lutz NEWS SERVING LUTZ/ODESSA AUGUST 7, 2013 Call AttorneyJIM HOLLIDAY813-868-1887 AUTO ACCIDENT?SLIP & FALL? Manion email@example.com In this age of tweets and texts, Gloria Dale sticks with an old-fashioned method of sending holiday cheer to veterans and troops. She writes each of her greeting cards by hand. The 78-year-old spends much of the year preparing about 1,575 cards to hand out at local nursing homes and to mail to active military personnel overseas. Shes a fixture at the Dunkin Donuts on SR 54 in Land O Lakes where she plants herself at her favorite corner table on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. She sips coffee as she jots out cards. Sometimes shell indulge in a bagel or some oatmeal. When shes not at the shop, she can be frequently found penning the cards at Winter Quarters Pasco RV Resorts clubhouse, while watching NASCAR or her beloved Tampa Bay Rays. See ROBOT, page12Teens use robot to save the worldSee GREETINGS, page12 Bickley Rivera takes on a steelpan similar to what shell play when she attends Panorama next February in Trinidad. Bickley is raising money for the trip, which will include a documentary film crew. (Photo provided)By Michael Hinman firstname.lastname@example.org Shes used it in concerts, recorded it in albums and even has had the music shes created with it featured on The Weather Channel. But next February, if she can raise the funds, Bickley Rivera will face the ultimate challenge involving her favorite instrument, the steelpan: She will compete against natives of the country that invented it. Shes going to Panorama, the worlds largest steelpan competition, taking place in Trinidad a competition that rarely welcomes outsiders. Yet Rivera, who lives in Land O Lakes, along with fellow performer Tom Berich of Medford, Ore., will trek to the Caribbean island nation to take part in the competition. And theyre taking a documentary film crew with them. Were going to be the outside eyes looking in, Rivera said. And were having that all put on film. There, the two will each join their own band that could feature as many as 120 performers, or pannists as they preferred to be called. They will practice for up to three weeks in the country, performing nearnightly concerts for spectators attending the festival. Since this is a competition, it is possible that either Rivera or Berich could be cut at any time even the night before the finals. Youre really at their mercy, Rivera said of the judges. Basically, if youre bad at any time, you could be pulled. We tried to pick bands that are regularly in the top 10, so were hoping that at least one of us makes it all the way through to the end. Chances are that Rivera and Berich wont receive any music or other prepara-Rivera to drum steelpan all the way to Trinidadtions ahead of their trip. They will step into roles equipped with only their steelpans and skills. Its a high-pressure environment that should create plenty of real-life drama for the camera crew filming it. Gloria Dale works through the year, writing holiday greeting cards for area veterans and military troops overseas. (Photos by B.C. Manion)See STEELPAN, page12

Now the companys newest facility, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, is staying ahead of the curve once again with an advanced robotic surgery system that is expected to reduce recovery times with the most precise surgeries available. Its called the da Vinci Surgical System SI, and the hospital at 2600 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. was expected to use it for the first time Monday. When its fully activated, it almost looks like a menacing mechanical spider in the operating room. But the da Vinci has the agility and dexterity beyond any human surgeon that will reduce blood loss, pain, scars and complications from all kinds of surgery ranging from prostate operations to intestinal resections. Basically, it does a much more exact surgery, said Gill Green, director of surgical services at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel. And with it, you avoid the complications. Surgery teams at the 83-bed hospital spent weeks training on the system ahead of their first operation on Monday. They learned not only how to prep a patient for the da Vinci, but also how to use its 3-D remote control that gives the surgeon a view he would struggle to see in a traditional operation. It takes laparoscopic surgery to a whole new level, said Mary Brady, Wesley Chapels chief nursing officer. Being a robot, the arm pieces are much smaller, and have much more room to work, she said. When the surgeon looks into the controller, his screen magnifies everything 10 times. And even if his hands are trembling a bit when hes working the system, the robot arms are always working in a smooth motion. Some patients fear robotic surgery because they think a robot is doing the work. Like many robotic systems, a surgeon directs the da Vinci controls, using its tools to make surgery less invasive. It works for many different types of surgery, but we dont have to use it if someone doesnt want it, Brady said. There are other alternatives as well, and thats something that is discussed between the physician and the patient on how they want to proceed. Few hospitals are using the da Vinci system in the Tampa Bay area, but they do include Pasco Regional Medical Center in Dade City and St. Josephs Hospital-North in northern Hillsborough County. But it is a steep investment. Florida Hospital wouldnt say what they paid for the device, but prices can run as high as $1.75 million, according to the undergraduate science publication, the Journal of Young Investigators. Yet, its an investment worth making if it can reduce the complications involved in various types of surgery. Its a continuation of our vision from the very beginning that we would have state-of-the-art technology in this hospital, said Tracy Clouser, director of marketing for the Wesley Chapel hospital. We make sure we have only the best in all areas where it provides patient benefits, and better patient care. Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel opened last October, becoming Adventists 22nd hospital in the state. The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report Michael Hinman has joined The Laker/ Lutz News as news editor, ready to share stories for and about the great residents of the area, ensuring that everyone gets a voice. Ive known Michael for many years and have always respected his journalistic ethics and enthusiasm, said Publisher Diane Kortus. It is great to finally have Michael on our team and look forward to his contributions, which I expect will make The Laker an even better paper than it is today. Hinman started his journalism career 20 years ago in northwestern Pennsylvania where he was a sports correspondent for a local weekly, and also broadcast news on a radio station there. He later moved to upstate New York where he worked as a sports editor for the Steuben CourierAdvocate and the weekend editor for the Hornell Evening Tribune. Hinman moved to Florida in 1996, where he became editor of the Zephyrhills News, and later a deputy editor for the now-defunct Zephyrhills Sun. Each band has its own musical culture and history, with many stories ready to be shared about their love of steelpan. The goal of Beat Pan! is to introduce more people back home to the art of steelpan, creating a deeper appreciation for the percussion-based art in the United States, where such instruments are still considered novel.Even before the trip, Rivera has worked to bring steelpan more into the mainstream, incorporating it into various genres of music including reggae and smooth jazz. That has made it tough for her to perform at different jazz venues around the country, because promoters are not always looking to change things up.What Im trying to do is really kind of different, Rivera said. Its really hard for them to accept it. They want to hear saxophone and guitar, so I incorporate a lot of that into my act, and then slowly move to the steelpan, as I get the audiences warmed up.Making the trip and producing the documentary is going to cost money, and both Rivera and Berich have already begun fundraising both through PayPal donations and through crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. The goal initially is to raise $25,000, but she will likely need $50,000 for the complete project from start to finish. If this is going to work, people have to buy into this, Rivera said. Were out looking for corporate sponsors and individual sponsors, and well keep working until we get all the money raised. In the meantime, Rivera is focused on getting ready for the trip, which does have her nervous. Im terrified actually, she said. These are people (in Trinidad) from the age of 5 who have learned how to play the steelpan. Ive been doing it for 10 years. They know what theyre doing. They know what works and doesnt work, and I have to find a way to fit in. For details on Riveras trip and how to participate, visit her website at www.bickleyrivera.com. Dale does the holiday card project every year, on behalf of the Lutz-Land O Lakes Womans Club. She got involved about eight years ago, while helping other club members complete the task.Well, some of them write so small you cant read it, Dale said. So, she thought to herself: Ill just take that little chore on myself. She asked the group: Can I take these cards home? They told her thatd be fine. So, I took those cards home on a Thursday, and the next Thursday I took them back, all done, Dale said. Since then, the project has become Dales little baby. As soon as one holiday season is over, shes out buying cards for the next one. After Christmas, I go to the store. Theyll come down 75 percent and 80 percent off, said Dale, who pays for the cards herself. The womans club pays for the postage to send the cards overseas, said Rosie Heim, club president. Heim said the club is lucky to have someone with Dales commitment. Im loving that she does it. She gives a personal touch from the club, which we like, Heim said. We want people to know that we care. She has beautiful writing. Signing the cards is simple, Dale said. I could get a stamp that says Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, Dale said, but she added, That would look horrible. Instead, she carefully signs each card, places it in an envelope and then adorns the envelope with holiday stickers. This is what it looks like when its finished, Dale said, holding a card that shes completed. It doesnt look commercial. Dale says she enjoys the project. Its a way she can honor people who have put their lives on the line for the nation. My dad was in the service, she said. I had an uncle who was in the service who got killed. I had brothers-in-law and my husband. They all served. My (late) husband (Harry), about the last thing he said to me was, if theres anything to do to help a veteran, help them. So, I try my best. Not everyone who gets a card always knows they get it, especially in nursing homes where patients may not always be aware of whats going on around them. But the family will know that they have a card, that were thinking of them, Dale said. The greetings may also bring a bit of cheer to troops overseas at the holidays, she said. I enjoy doing the cards. I can sit and write all day long, Dale said. It gives me something to do. It keeps my fingers limber. Anyone with new holiday cards they would like to contribute or who would like to help cover postage costs can reach Dale at (813) 215-1045.STEELPAN, from page 1 computer programming and infrared sensors. It carries out its tasks in a fictitious place, called Nova Prime. The robotics team spent countless hours building and programming the robot, and created Nova Prime from plywood, Spackle, sand, chili powder, paint and plants. They also produced a video that tells the story of their imaginary world. The video opens with images of whats going wrong with earth traffic jams, billowing smokestacks, parched earth, landfills and a dead bird. It then pans to a view of Carrs backyard in Lutz, where fish thrive in water tanks, which provide water and nutrients to a flower and vegetable garden in a system, which in turn produces fish and organic vegetables, using very little water. The video also features a lively musical soundtrack and an entertaining look at the steps the team followed to create and program the robot. The video also pokes fun at Ray Carr, who is Seans dad and the teams coach. Hes depicted as a lecturer who is boring the team to death. Other portions of the video show the rover coming together and the construction of Nova Prime. The team submitted that video recently meeting the contests phase two deadline. The video they submitted in June won them the right to compete in the finals. The contest provides an excellent challenge for the kids, Ray Carr said. Its not just a computer science thing; its not just mechanical engineering, he said. Its electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering and a lot of geometry, all at once. Theyre not focused on the learning. Theyre focused on the goal. They learn along the way. I think that kind of opens up their minds a bit. Seeing things run around like that (robot), after you wrote the software, its fun, he added. Sean Carr said its been fun for him, too.We work together really well. We have the same common interest in mechanical and software, Sean Carr said. We bonded a lot.It makes it even more fun when youre competing against other people, said Walters, who was at Ray Carrs office five hours a day for at least five days a week. The robot, I believe, took about 42 hours of work, Sean Carr said. Ross took the lead role in designing the robot. Hes a Lego genius, Sean Carr said. That robot would be nowhere near what it is now without him. Walters did the lions share of painting and spackling to create Nova Prime and worked on developing the software to make the rover robot work. They struggled through a lot of issues, Ray Carr said. They struggled through a lot of things to come to the end solution. It didnt just show up by any means. The compass sensor kept messing up, Walters said. The tires were too big and wobbly. But they worked through those problems and produced a robot that would follow computer commands. They also used music to help move their video along, after discovering that none of them particularly excelled at talking directly into the camera. For making it to the final round, the team received a Lego Mindstorms robotic kit and a Sony Handycam video camera. If they win the competition, theyll be highlighted in a special feature about the X Prize After Earth Challenge on the U.S. Bluray disc of After Earth. Theyll also receive a signed Blu-ray, an After Earth poster and other prizes.ROBOT, from page 1 Origins of the SteelpanThe steelpan might appear as something not much more than a metal pan on a stand, but its a percussion instrument that originated from The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in the 19th century. The World Steelband Music Festival has been a staple of Trinidad society since 1964. Panorama, where Bickley Rivera hopes to compete next year, dates back to about the same time. By Jeff Odom firstname.lastname@example.org Danny Fernandez arrived at Steinbrenner High as a sophomore in 2009 without knowing what to expect from the brand new school. The field had never been played on. The weights had never been lifted. To him, it was a clean slate, the chance to prove his value to a budding program. Fast forward five years later and Fernandez is at it again building a program from scratch. This time, however, more than 100 other players are helping do the same at a much higher level. They are laying the foundation to mold first-year Florida Institute of Technology, a Division II program, into a future college football powerhouse. * Former Steinbrenner coach Floyd Graham can remember the first time he saw Fernandez during summer workouts prior to the schools inaugural year. His overall size wasnt all that impressive, but one thing about Fernandez stuck out to Graham above all 71 other players on the roster his passion for the game. With Danny, what we had is a kid who came in what I call the Napoleon syndrome, Graham said with a laugh. He was undersized, but he had a huge heart, and he won over the players the first year. Fernandez soon began to take a leadership role among his teammates, and when Graham and his assistants allowed the players to pick the squads first team captains, there was no hesitation at who should get a nod. He was a great leader, never missed workouts, was always in the weight room, and he always fought to get bigger, faster and stronger, Graham said of Fernandez. He was a utility player for us, and at one time, we actually had him as a backup quarterback. He played that, running back and corner, and he did everything we asked. Fernandez, who came to Steinbrenner after playing at Sickles his freshman year, said he always felt from Day 1 that he needed to prove his worth and show how badly he wanted to make Steinbrenner into a successful program. Coach Graham didnt really know who we were, he didnt know a lot of guys skill levels either, so once we suited up and got on the field, we just had this open opportunity to truly show how we can play, Fernandez said. When I got to Steinbrenner, I was one of only a few guys who had played varsity football, so I knew from the start that I had to step up. I had to try and be a vocal leader. Fernandezs leadership paid off for the Warriors as they steadily improved from 0-6 in 2009 to 5-5 in 2010 and 7-3 in 2011, one win away from a playoff berth. But one thing hadnt improved by his senior year a chance to play at the college level for a major university. However, a late season recruiting fair changed everything for Fernandez when he was offered to play for Florida Tech, which had just made the decision to expand its athletic department to include football beginning in 2013. There was no hesitation from Fernandez. He was going to play at Florida Tech. I think its definitely just awesome this kind of scenario to be put into, because nothing was established, Fernandez said. A lot of guys go to college for the first time and theyre kind of nervous, and they start looking at sitting the bench for three years or having a few All-Americans ahead of them or a solidified starter or team captain. But getting to Florida Tech, nobody knew anybody. The coaches, when it came down to it, didnt really know who could play and who couldnt, because they were kind of just basing us off of film and some players were watched live. So, it was just so up in the air, which everyone was able to just make a statement, and thats how Steinbrenner was as well. Graham, who left Steinbrenner in 2012 following the teams best season in program history, said he felt like the decision was a perfect match for Fernandez. I think they go hand in hand, except (Florida Tech) is probably a much larger scale than high school, Graham said. Hell know the obstacles that we had to get through like, for example, equipment not being there, to taking care of new facilities, to being a part of just the team that plays the very first game at this school. This is one of the things he used to talk about to his teammates. I remember he used to say were not following anybody, everybody is going to follow us, so weve got to set the standard right now. He took a lot of pride in that. * With Florida Techs program not starting for another year when he enrolled for classes last fall, Fernandez had to essentially take a year off from football. During that time, Fernandez worked with Florida Tech coach Steve Englehart to develop his game to a higher level and began developing chemistry with his teammates through practices and scrimmages. Away from the field, Fernandez took a part-time job at the school and made sure to focus on his academics as he pursues a degree in biomedical engineering. It was really easy for me to sink in and focus on what I need to do, because I dont have to take on any burdens, Fernandez said. At Steinbrenner, I knew I was one of those guys that had to come in right away and say something, but it was much easier at Florida Tech, because Ive had a whole year to build up to it. * Fernandez has had Sept. 7 circled on his calendar for more than a year. Thats when Florida Tech will host, under the lights, Stetson University, which will restart its football program this season after a 57-year hiatus. While he cant describe how he will feel walking out onto the field for the first time in a college uniform, Fernandez said he knows it will be a memory to last a lifetime. The fact that were going to be in the history books and just have that excitement and build up this program is making us work that much harder, Fernandez said. We want to accomplish that goal of winning that game and being able to say to a team thats only an hour north that we beat them is incredible. Graham echoed his former player and added that he believes this entire experience stretches far beyond the gridiron and into life itself. I think that is a tremendous asset for Danny, Graham said. Imagine what thats going to be like for him in life. You think about it, youre only a father for the first time, youre married for the first time, and you buy your first house. He took so much pride in doing something for the first time (at Steinbrenner), that he wanted to see that moment and make the best of that moment. I think (starting the program at Florida Tech) is just going to be a tremendous, tremendous asset for him in life, because hes a great young man. Allen is faced with the task of rebuilding going into the teams fifth season. For the past two seasons, Steinbrenner has been one of the most successful programs in the county, from their first Class 7ADistrict 9 title in 2011, to its first playoff win against St. Petersburg last year, with back-to-back 20-plus win seasons. But gone is 1,000-point scorer Bailey Hooker. Gone is all-time assists leader Justice Thigpen. And gone is Lauren Shedd, along with four other seniors, who departed after graduation in May. But the biggest thing missing from this years squad is strong leadership and on-court team chemistry, which may be deeper than the loss of statistics. One thing that I will say is, as a head coach, our assistants and even to an extent some of our kids, have been very spoiled by consistency in terms of the people that were here, said Allen, the only coach in program history. When we opened five years ago, we were brand new and it was a majority of freshmen and sophomores. So, it was something at the beginning where we knew we were going to eventually take some lumps and hits, but thats all part of character building and going through things where you want to struggle in the beginning. So they understand what it takes to be successful. One of the ways Allen is trying to keep his team on the same page prior to the start of the season in November is through summer youth camps. The clinics, which drew more than 200 total kids during the two-week-long sessions, give his players the unique opportunity of working with children from around the community, teaching them the fundamentals of basketball. A lot of times when kids get time off, a lot of things can happen, Allen said. It keeps our girls out of trouble, gives them something to do and it keeps them around basketball, which is what we want. We want them to be thinking about it and staying in basketball shape, but most importantly to pick up other life skills, communication and develop a relationship with the local community. Junior power forward Rachel Briere, who was Steinbrenners second-leading scorer last season with 9.3 points per game, said the teams chances of maintaining its success in the district will all rest on how they react to stressful situations. Its going to depend all on our mental toughness, Briere said. Coach has already been so specific and clear that thats exactly what were going need, because weve played in tournaments this summer and it shows that if we get tired then our mentality is not there, and we let the refs get inside their head or other teams, so its all about staying focused on exactly where we want to be.Away from the court, the team has its own time for bonding. Whether its going out to eat, weekend slumber parties or huddling around the television to watch their favorite show, the players enjoy each others company and, as senior Morgan Gonzalez puts it, theyre all best friends. When we went to Gainesville last season for a tournament, we had a team night where we all got in one of the rooms and all watched Pitch Perfect and stuff like that, Gonzalez said. We are a family, and we just go so much further out than any other team that I know. Were inseparable. Senior point guard Taylor Thigpen added it will take that attitude toward each other in order to get past opponents like Sickles, Wiregrass Ranch and last seasons 7A region champs, Freedom. Were just trying to incorporate every new player that we have and just trying to play Steinbrenner basketball, Thigpen said. Weve just got to learn how to play with each other, because were all great friends, but its different from being friends outside the court to on the court. Weve got to build chemistry, and I think if we do that, we should have another good season. Follow Jeff Odom on Twitter @JOdomLakerSteinbrenner working to keep team chemistry intact Junior power forward Rachel Briere said the team needs to stay mentally strong in order to get through tough situations on the court this season. Our third installment in the series takes a look at Class 6A-District 6:GATORS DYNAMIC DUOLand O Lakes success in 6A-6 this season may rest on the arms of quarterbacks James Pensyl and Ethan Weilant. Pensyl looked impressive during the Gators spring game loss against Pasco on May 23 finishing 8-of-17 with one touchdown and one interception. He also added 30 rushing yards. And Weilant, who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, turned plenty of heads with his performance in the North Suncoast 7-on-7 summer league. He even lined up at wide receiver at times. While Pensyl looks to be the favorite to land the starting job in Week 1 after he passed for 946 yards last season, the battle could end up going down to the wire for Land O Lakes, which is looking to end its two-year playoff drought and get past the dark cloud of recruiting violation penalties handed down by the FHSAA in 2011. The Gators have the offensive weapons to do just that, but their final place in the standings will depend on how they use them against the slate of tough district opponents.SEAHAWKS HOPE TO KEEP SOARINGSunlake has been one of the most dominant teams in Pasco County during the past three seasons, racking up back-to-back wins over rival Land O Lakes and 26 total wins. However, the Seahawks didnt have the best spring jamboree by losing to Wiregrass Ranch 7-0, but fared better in their 21-0 win against a young Wesley Chapel squad. As coach Bill Browning put it after the game: We got our feet wet. At times we swam, at times we treaded water, and at times we drowned. Growing pains early in the season are to be expected and projected starting quarterback Esteban LeWallen, who is Sunlakes fourth starter in as many seasons, did not even step onto the field in the spring games due to personal reasons. But the loss of quarterback Josh Zifer, 1,000-yard rusher Eddie Burgos and linebacker Ray Busbee to graduation might be too much to overcome, especially after the Seahawks missed the playoffs with an 8-2 record last season. And with the way the district is shaping up again, they may have to repeat that performance to earn a shot at postseason berth. Land O Lakes quarterback James Pensyl looked impressive in the spring game and has plenty of offensive weapons to get the Gators back into the postseason for the first time in two years. Sunlake coach Bill Browning and the Seahawks may have to repeat last seasons successful run if they are going to be a playoff contender.
