Crystal McDaniel holds a wooden plank thats destined to become part of a new home. (Photos courtesy of Crystal McDaniel) By B.C. Manion email@example.com Its that time of year again, when families start gearing up for a new academic year by shopping for new school clothes, shoes, supplies and backpacks. Just in time for those back-to-school purchases, Florida is having its sales tax holiday. This time for the first time personal computers and accessories, valued up to $750, are also exempt from sales taxes during the sales tax holiday, which begins at 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 2 and goes through 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 4.Retailers are staffing up as families take advantage of tax savings and markdowns, Rick McAllister, president and CEO of the Florida Retail Federation, said in a news release.Retailers expect the introduction of the computer sales exemption to give the popular tax holiday a significant boost, McAllister said. Clothing items and shoes priced at up to $75 are exempt, and so are school supply items, sold at no more than $15. McAllister thinks the new computer exemption will drive purchases. See TAX, page12Sales tax breaks await shoppersCollecting memories to preserve historyBy B.C. Manion firstname.lastname@example.org The interviewing techniques used by National Public Radios StoryCorps project will be used locally to create a special collection tracing the history of African-American life in Hillsborough County. Millions of NPR listeners are familiar with stories collected through StoryCorps.org and broadcast on NPRs Morning Edition program. StoryCorps mission is to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share and preserve the stories of our lives, according to the organizations website. Some of the recorded stories are played on the radio. The taped interviews are also archived in the Library of Congress. Since 2003, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 45,000 interviews, involving approximately 90,000 participants. With the special grant it received, the Tampa-Hillsborough library system plans to invite people to share their recollections about the history of the African-American community in Hillsborough County, said Renelda Sellf, chief librarian for the TampaHillsborough County Public Library Cooperative. Specifically, the library system wants to hear from people who can share their insights, memories and knowledge about Central Avenue, the former center of commerce for the African-American community; Robert W. Saunders Sr., a civil rights activist; the history of local black nurses; the Jackson House, a boarding house where many high-profile African-Americans stayed in the days before blacks could stay in hotels; and, Negro League baseball players. There is a lot of rich history that we want to collect, Sellf said. Saunders played a key role in the civil rights movement in Florida and served as the Florida NAACP field secretary. He endured death threats from the Ku Klux Klan; worked statewide to desegregate public schools, beaches and housing; won raises for black teachers; brought affirmative action to government contracting and college By Marie Abramov Special to The Laker/Lutz News Since the buses and trucks couldnt carry them up the goat path on the mountainous outskirts of Tegucigalpa, Crystal McDaniel and 55 other volunteers trudged up the clifflike slope lugging hammers, chainsaws, belts and other construction tools. They were on a mission to build three wooden houses on the hill, but first had to negotiate large rocks to get there. One home was for a disabled woman who had never been off the mountain.Dark clouds formed over the building site and the nearby lush terrain, and heavy showers soaked the volunteers. But the downpour didnt dampen their enthusiasm. They donned ponchos and worked through the wet weather working in three teams and finishing three houses by the end of the day. Its the hardest I ever worked in my life, McDaniel said of her stay in Honduras. Besides making it more difficult to build, the rainstorm caused water to stream down the goat path making the rocks slippery as the construction crew headed down the mountain at the end of the day. McDaniel and her teenage son Matthew made the trip as part of an outreach organized by Northwest Tampa Church of Christ. The Lutz residents are parishioners of the church and spent two weeks toward the end of June building houses for the poor in Honduras. The volunteers built 37 one-room homes, which measure 14-by-14. But thats just touching the surface. Charlene Ierna helps service and sell airconditioning units during the day, but her off time is filled with a much different passion: gator hunting. While it might not be the most common form of game hunting in Florida, alligator hunting attracts many adventure-seekers looking to come face-to-face with the states largest native reptile. And these hunters dont use guns. Instead, they stalk their prey with weapons like spear guns or crossbows. A lot of people still do consider it a little dangerous, said Ierna, who is vice president of Iernas Heating & Cooling in Lutz. Having been around them my whole life when I would hunt them with my dad as a kid, Im still not going to say that Im comfortable with them. You can never be comfortable with something that is more powerful than you are. Ierna captured her first gator this past Easter during a professionally guided hunt just south of Bartow. Her gator measured 13 feet and 4 inches, and weighed 800 pounds. She lured it close to her with an alligator call, and then while it was still in the water, hit it with her crossbow. A giant bobber, that was part of the arrow she shot, kept the alligator afloat. She finished it off later with a second arrow. Theyre dinosaurs essentially, Ierna said. One bow and arrow is not going to do the job, unless its a perfect shot hit in the perfect place. But hunting an alligator is not just for the trophy head. Fully processed gator hides can run for as much as $100 a foot, according to Shane Smith, a Lutz resident who owns The Hungry Gator Meat Market in Plant City. Alligator meat, while not quite ready to replace beef or chicken in most peoples diets, is still quite popular with various eateries, including Hungry Harrys on US 41, which serves a popular gator sausage sandwich. Alligators, especially wild alligators, are found only in the Southeast, and there are few other alligator farms outside of there, Smith said. The alligator meat industry as a whole has grown 500 percent in the past year alone, Smith said. Thats due in large part to cable television shows like Swamp People and Gator Boys that have whet the nations taste buds to alligator steaks and alligator sausage. Trappers in Florida used to only sell to local restaurants. Now theyre shipping to restaurants all over the country, Smith said. His meat processing company, open only a year, already is distributing more than 450 pounds of gator meat a week to restaurants, including Charleys Steak House and Market Fresh Fish in Tampa. For the uninitiated, gator meat tastes a bit like chicken, believe it or not, and has a texture probably best described as those found in certain types of fish. But it does have some significant health benefits. Its a very lean meat, low in cholesterol and high in protein, Smith said. It has a higher protein count than in chicken or tuna. Ierna, in the meantime, is already gearing up for her next alligator hunt. Shes heading to St. Johns River in September with the hopes of picking up two more gators to add to her collection. This time, Ierna will be without a professional guide. Shell be hunting an animal with heightened senses of smell and sight that could turn the tables on a hunter in an instant. My personal opinion, and I even tell my kids this, Ierna said. They are far more intimidated by you than what you think. They dont want anything to do with us. But still: You have to be wise and be alert, and you certainly cant be relaxed. You cant just sit and look and just hope everything goes well. You have to be attentive to whats going on. Charlene Ierna and Larry DeLucenay show off their gator-hunting prowess during last weeks Central Pasco Chamber of Commerces regular mixer at the Land O Lakes Beef O Bradys. The trophy table is lined with heads and skins of what were once fierce reptiles in Floridas waters. The gators are hunted, but are then used for not only their hides, but for food as well. Tiffany smiled as she explained, I always start with, Gelato has much less fat content than Ice Cream, that makes everybody feel better. The churning process is slower and more milk than cream produces a denser product with less air that can be enjoyed at a temperature where you can savor the unique flavor options. Our Gelato is produced daily here in Tampa and delivered to us by Roberto Mori, owner of DUOMO GELATO. Robertos has operated his retail store at the International Plaza since 2004. You can meet Roberto at the Wilderness Caf Saturday afternoon August 3rd. from 4:00 6:00 pm. The nonprofit organization, which began operations in 2009, offers a free array of services, including pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and information on topics including fetal development, childbirth, lactation and baby care. The organization grew faster than expected, said Peter Castellani, executive director of the center, which has locations in Land O Lakes and Wesley Chapel. The organization opened a second location in Wesley Chapel because the demand was growing so quickly, Castellani said. The Wesley Chapel center now has 18 clients, and the Land O Lakes center averages more than 100 client visits per month. Castellani began the pregnancy center after being laid off from his job at IBM and feeling called by God to pursue this work. The centers Land O Lakes location is at 3632 Land O Lakes Blvd., Suite 108, and its Wesley Chapel location is at 5854 Argerian Drive, Suite 101. The center is partnering with Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, Castellani said. Theyre actually doing the sonograms. Oasis helps women ranging from teens to women in their 40s, with most being in their 20s and 30s. There are a lot of people who need help, Castellani said. Jack Buttafuoco sits behind just some of the groceries he collected in a personal food drive to feed the hungry. (Photo by B.C. Manion)By B.C. Manion firstname.lastname@example.org Nine-year-old Jack Buttafuoco and his mom, Melissa, recently were at a Dunkin Donuts when they saw an advertisement in The Laker/Lutz News for a summer food drive to help fight hunger locally. The Seven Oaks youngster was inspired to get involved to help stock the pantry at Feeding America Tampa Bay-Suncoast Branch. The elementary school student collected canned foods, pasta, peanut butter and other items from friends, neighbors and family members. He even pitched in $26 of his allowance to buy soup and other items to help stock the food bank, which provides items for various food pantries. He said he feels sad when he thinks about the hungry people who need the food, but is glad that he can help. He encourages others to do the same. Anyone else who would like to help can bring their contributions to The Laker/Lutz News, 3632 Land O Lakes Blvd., Suite 102, in Land O Lakes. Closer Look AN ADVERTISER PROFILE By Melanie CaseyIts not every day that one gets to pet an opossum. But recently, at EastWest Animal Hospital in Lutz, Barley the opossum was in for cold laser therapy to treat the edema in his paws. Barleys doctor, veterinarian Linda Register opened the small animal practice nearly three years ago and strives to combine Eastern medicine and philosophies with traditional Western practices. Dr. Registers interest in alternative therapies began in 1998 when her cat, Butterball, developed bone cancer in the spine. It was a death sentence, Costantino said. However, Dr. Register researched herbs and treated the cat, which lived for an additional year. Since then, the doctor embraced Eastern medicine as an adjunct to Western practices. In fact, she is the only certified veterinary acupuncturist in the Land O Lakes/Lutz area, Costantino noted. We want to treat healthy pets and keep them in balance, said Dennis Costantino, Registers husband and clinic administrator. Finding causes, not treating problems. Its the cause that matters. In keeping with that philosophy, the hospital offers an array of wellness programs that not only help keep pets healthy, but also save their owners money. The plans are geared toward an animals age (pediatric, adult and senior) and are available in basic or enhanced versions with the enhanced version offering a savings of 45 percent (up to $335) per year. The plan is an affordable way to ensure a pets wellness without pet owners worrying about coming up with a lump sum or skipping out on important treatments. Plans for your pets regular care are laid out for you, Costantino said. Its not a surprise. The enhanced pediatric plan, for instance, includes five exam visits, all core vaccinations, deworming treatments, microchip implantation with registration, a years worth of heartworm and flea preventatives along with a spay or neuter surgical procedure (complete with blood work and fluid therapy) and much more. But, its not just puppies and kittens that benefit from East-West Animal Hospitals wellness plans adult and senior pets do too. Senior plans, for example, include x-rays, blood work and urine screenings. Finding and treating health problems early can mean a longer, happier life for your pet. Monthly plan costs start at just $16 a month; all plans require a $99 enrollment fee, and monthly fees are automatically drafted each month. The clinic introduced wellness plans about a month ago. Since then, many clients have taken advantage of these incredible programs. The plans are geared toward preventive wellness; they do not cover emergencies and are not pet insurance. However, pet insurance is a great compliment to the East-West Animal Hospital wellness programs. Dr. Register received her DVM degree from the University of Florida in 1996 and received her acupuncture certification in 2009 from the Chi Institute. Dr. Register is a member of several local veterinary boards and advisory committees. East-West Animal Hospital is located in the Tropical Village Plaza, 1524 Land O Lakes Blvd. in Lutz. Open Mondays and Fridays, 7:30am to 6pm and Tuesdays through Thursdays 7:30am to 8pm. The taped interviews will be kept in a special collection at the Robert W. Saunders Sr. Branch Library, 1505 N. Nebraska Ave. The existing library is slated for demolition and a new one will be built on the same site. Most of the interviews will be conducted at the Saunders branch, but the project will also travel to other locations to collect stories, Sellf said. Those details are not yet final, but will be posted on the library systems website when the information is available.Staff members and volunteers for the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System will receive training to lay the groundwork for collecting the personal stories, Sellf said. After this local effort to create a special collection of recordings involving AfricanAmerican history wraps up, the library system will be allowed to keep the equipment, and its staff will continue to benefit from the training provided through the project, Sellf said. The library system was one of the 10 systems selected nationwide to participate in the StoryCorps @ your library pilot program. The American Library Association Public Programs Office, in partnership with StoryCorps, selected the grant winners. There were more than 200 applications, Sellf said. Theres very little to no public assistance in Honduras, which is the second poorest country in Central America, according to the CIAs website. About one-third of the 8.5 million people living in Honduras are underemployed, and more than half of the residents live in poverty. Impoverished conditions are especially great in rural and indigenous areas, like the three villages where the volunteers helped. The nation also has the highest murder rate in the world. Up in the mountains is where we worked, said Keith Boyer, a leading organizer on this trip. Its just the poorest of the poor. They squat on the land, and then they get ownership. And then well build as many houses as we can. Crystal was motivated by a desire to help those less fortunate. Were here to serve others seriously, she said. I was born and raised with a family that you (live) a life of service. Matthew said he went to Honduras because it was a new and different experience. I do it to grow closer to the youth group that goes down there, he said. And then its nice to go help people who dont have anything. Even though its hard work, building the houses is actually kind of fun, and you get to see another country. The nondenominational Northwest Tampa Church of Christ, located at Sheldon Road in Tampa, gets parishioners from all over the Tampa Bay area. Church organizers have been planning annual trips to Honduras for the last 13 years. It costs $1,650 per adult and $400 per teen to go on the trip, and parishioners had to pay the full or partial amount depending on how actively they donated and participated in church fundraisers and other activities. Crystal paid more than $1,000 for herself and $400 for Matthew to go.The mission trip also received funds raised through food sales, car washes and other church events. All of the money went toward food, lodging, plane tickets, lumber and other materials needed to build the homes. The houses built by the volunteers consisted of four wooden walls, a floor and a tin roof. Residents who want smaller rooms can use clotheslines and blankets to create separate spaces. The houses have no plumbing or electricity. Meals are cooked outside with a makeshift stove. Matthew said residents who want electricity have to buy their own wires and connect them from their homes to the main source of electricity set up in these villages by the government. Each home has a family with up to nine people living in it. They have nothing absolutely nothing but the clothes on their back, Crystal said. And theyre the happiest people you ever saw. She observed an abundance of affection, communication and interdependency within families that led to joy and satisfaction in life. The villagers were very friendly with each other and the volunteers, Matthew said. Besides receiving new housing, each family also received an adult and childrens Bible in Spanish from the mission. On their three flights from Miami to Honduras, the church group took 37 large duffel bags full of shoes, small toys, shampoos, 150 dresses and many other small items to give out in Honduras. The volunteers also managed to buy and assemble 300 bags of staple foods like rice, beans, sugar, lard, coffee and pasta. They gave one bag per family that moved into the new houses and their neighbors. McDaniel and her son said they found the trip so rewarding they plan to go back again. Most families in Florida own a computer of one type or another, and we expect that many will take advantage of the tax savings to purchase computers for their kids or upgrade their own, McAllister said. And youll see great deals on clothes, shoes and school supplies. Its a winning proposition for Floridas families and for our retailers, because well see a good boost in commerce over the weekend. Stores are actively competing with each other for customers, and that usually means plenty of markdowns to attract shoppers, he added. Retailers in Florida are expected to boost staffing by about 20 percent during the tax holiday weekend to accommodate shoppers. In general, retailers expect an average increase of between 30 and 40 percent in store traffic over the weekend because of the sales tax holiday, McAllister said. A National Retail Federation survey predicts that families with school-aged children will spend an average of $634.78 on apparel, shoes, supplies and electronics in 2013, down from $688.62 last year. McAllister noted, however, that because of the tax holiday, retail stores generally perform a little better in Florida than in states without a sales tax holiday. The Shops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel historically sees more shoppers at its stores during August because of back-to-school sales and an uptick in activity during the sales tax holiday, said Debbie Detweiler, director of marketing. Its also a fun time, Detweiler said. We enjoy seeing parents shopping with their kids for back-to-school. For more details on items that are exempt under the tax-free holiday, go to the Florida Department of Revenues website at dor.myflorida.com/dor/ and click on Sales Tax Holiday, Aug. 2-4, 2013. By Jeff Odom email@example.com For the first time in the programs nineyear history, the Bishop McLaughlin Hurricanes are in a major district Class 3A-District 4 that will now make them eligible for the postseason for the first time since 2007. That has players excited for what could be coming down the road. Were a private school and still a very young program, senior quarterback R.J. Perciavalle said. Moving into a district was necessary for moving the program forward. District 4, Perciavalle said, is one of the best districts in the state, and thats going to be a challenge for the Hurricanes. Obviously were going to go out and try to win every game, he said. We know were young, but were trying as hard as we can, and we want to go out and prove ourselves. In its first district appearance since the 2007-08 season when it was in the now-defunct Class1B-District 6, Bishop McLaughlin will match up with Berkley Prep, Tampa Catholic, Fort Meade, Frostproof and Lakeland Christian. Three of those teams made the playoffs last season, and none had a losing record. Bishop McLaughlin, however, finished last season at 4-7 as an FHSAA Independent in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. Intimidated? Not at all, Perciavalle said. Weve been picked last in a lot of preseason rankings and stuff like that, and we just want to show that were here to fight and not just some pushover team, Perciavalle said. One of the blueprints to how Bishop McLaughlin plans to reach its success can be found in the schools cross-town rivals Carrollwood Day School. The Hurricanes lost to the Patriots 41-7 in their inaugural spring game back in May. Yet the young program has drawn plenty of comparisons to Carrollwood Day, which went to the Class 2A region finals last season just three years after moving into its first district, 2A-5, because of how they are building their program. Perciavalle threw for 1,319 yards with 15 total touchdowns last season and expects to use those numbers to help lead the team to a stronger upcoming season. Thirdyear coach Derrick Alexander said after the spring game that it will take leadership from players like Perciavalle to set up the program for success. We want to get stronger and in better shape, Alexander said. Just because we dont have the big numbers, our guys have to be in maximum shape, because theyre playing on both sides of the ball. Thats even more important this season with a much tougher schedule ahead of Bishop McLaughlin. Were trying to put in some extra work in the weight room, on the field and just do everything you can do to just better prepare ourselves, Perciavalle said. We know its not going to be easy, but were definitely up for the challenge. LaPace, a right-handed pitcher and 2013 graduate, went 7-2 as a senior last season with a 1.67 ERA, two saves and three complete games for the Warriors. He told The Laker/Lutz News in a text message that he felt good after making an official visit to the school the day his commitment was announced. Its still so surreal to think that Ive been granted an opportunity to play collegiate baseball at its highest level, LaPace said. I cant wait to make the most of it. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound LaPace also earned wins for the Warriors in the Class 7ADistrict 9 finals against Wiregrass Ranch, and in the region quarterfinals over Seminole High. He is the second Steinbrenner player in program history to commit to Eastern Michigan after Chad Witkowski did in 2011. Witkowski, however, later opted to attend junior college. Eastern Michigan is an NCAA Division I program that plays in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles finished with an overall record of 26-28 last season.Former Steinbrenner player transfersFormer Steinbrenner High second baseman and outfielder Christian Diaz has transferred from Jacksonville University to Eastern Florida State College due to personal reasons, he told The Laker/Lutz News.Diaz, who graduated from Steinbrenner in 2012, was set to enter his second season with the Dolphins after redshirting his freshman year. But after the dismissal of coach Terry Alexander and a lack of scholarship funds for him this year, Diaz said it was time to leave the Division I program. Im excited to have a new start, Diaz said in a text message. Hopefully, things will work out a little better this go-around. Diaz batted .343 with 17 RBIs and one home run during his senior year at Steinbrenner. Eastern Florida State College, formerly Brevard Community College, is a National Junior College Athletic Association program located in Brevard County that competes in the Southern Conference. Closer Look AN ADVERTISER PROFILE Trisha Jordan and Shanda Baker, owners of Element 54 Salon in Lutz, have a grand vision for their new business. We want to give our customers a whole new hair care experience, said Shanda. We also want to create an enjoyable atmosphere for our stylists to keep their passion strong for hair care. Trisha has worked 10 years in the beauty industry and Shanda is a Level 5 stylist with nine years of experience. Element 54 is a full-service salon with separate areas set up specifically for each type of service: cuts, colors, highlights, textures, manicures, pedicures and waxing. A blow-dry bar lets customers get their hair styled for special occasions and romantic nights out. For men, barber Ray Johnson gives haircuts, shaves and beard and mustache trims with a steamed towel application. Additional services for men include manicures, pedicures and waxing (eyebrows, chest and back). Our stylists have from one and 10 years of experience, says Trisha. We can accommodate any beauty budget with our range of staff experience. All stylists do color and cuts and some have specializations in extensions and curly hair. New stylists begin as assistants washing hair and mixing colors. This allows them to comfortably grow into their profession while gaining firsthand experience with every aspect of the salon, all under the close supervision of more experienced stylists. Trisha and Shanda provide in-house training and actively encourage their stylists to take advantage of outside education to keep up with new styles, methods and products. Training is so important that we offered in-house training sessions before we even opened our doors, said Trisha. Our system of training makes for an easy transition when new stylists go on the floor to work on their own. Element 54 Salon provides over-thetop service with top-of-the-line products, including Redken, Pureology and Paul Mitchell. Guests enjoy a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and are offered snacks, soft drinks, wine and cold beer. Appointments are encouraged to ensure each customer gets the best stylist for their needs. Williams was hired as the Warriors first coach when the school opened in 2009. Before that, he was an assistant principal and athletic director at Blake High, and was also a drivers education instructor at Steinbrenner. In 1971, Williams made collegiate history by breaking the color barrier as the first African-American mens basketball player at the University of Florida. He finished his fouryear Gator career with 249 total assists while earning a degree in physical education. I guess when you look back at it, you see that youre a pioneer, Williams told the Ocala Star-Banner in 2006. But at the time, I wasnt really thinking about it that way. I was just thinking about it as playing college basketball, winning in the SEC and getting my degree. Williams had an overall record of 30-58 during his tenure with the Warriors, including a program-best 13-11 last season.
