Manion bcmanion@cnewspubs.com Mike Olson, Pasco County’s tax collector since 1981, died on June 26, three days after suffering a massive stroke. Gov. Rick Scott will name a successor to fill Olson’s post until 2014 when voters choose a successor to complete his unexpired term. They will vote again in 2016 to fill the seat for a four-year term. John Tupps of Scott’s press office said last week that a timetable had not been set for naming Olson’s successor.Olson served as the county’s tax collector since 1981 — holding the office longer than any other tax collector in Florida. He was also the sole Democrat to hold a county office in Pasco, and he assumed that office after a sixyear stint on the Pasco County Commission. Attorney Clyde Hobby, a longtime friend of Olson, described him as a meticulous man who cared deeply about public service.During Olson’s tenure on the county commission, the county introduced zoning laws and began providing water, sewer, fire and rescue services, Hobby said. As tax collector, Olson was ahead of the curve in adopting efficient standards for his office, Hobby added.“He implemented computer services before most tax collectors in the state knew what a computer was,” Hobby said. He began selling driver’s licenses long before the state began requiring tax collectors to do so, Hobby said. And, in the days before he died, he told Hobby that Supervisor of Elections Brian Corley had informed him that 65 percent of the new voters in Pasco County came through the tax collector’s office. Olson took customer service seriously and routinely read all of the hundreds of comment cards that came into his office. On more than one occasion, he disciplined employees based on information he developed after first learning about an incident through a comment card, Hobby said. Shortly before his death, Olson was actively seeking new locations in Central Pasco and East Pasco to improve services for customers. Pasco County Commissioner Pat Mulieri said, via email, that she knew Olson since about 1990. “He was all about tending to residents’ needs,” Mulieri said, noting she or her assistant called him frequently, and he was always helpful. One of the biggest issues came up when identification requirements changed for driver’s licenses, Mulieri said. She recalled an instance when a 92-year-old veteran had a problem because his first name didn’t match on his documents. One call to Olson resolved the problem, the county commissioner said. Olson came from a family with deep roots in service to others, Hobby said. His grandfather was a school board member and his late mother, Mitttye P. Locke, was a longtime principal who has an elementary school named for her in New Port Richey.Tax collector leaves lasting legacy Mike Olson Rain puts a damper on other area festivitiesBy B.C. Manion bcmanion@cnewspubs.com While other area events battled downpours, it didn’t rain on the parade at the Fourth of July celebration in Lutz. The festivities, marking the 100th birthday of the community north of Tampa, were steeped in tradition. People lined up along the parade route, with children and adults clamoring for beads, candy and other loot tossed to the crowd by those riding on floats or walking in the parade. Lutz resident Barbara Hall got there early to stake out a spot near the community center. She came with her daughter and son-in-law, Jamie and Kyle Alderman, and their children, Kate and Kyle II. The kids brought along some friends, Sydney and Cole Van Pelt. The children planted themselves in chairs at the edge of the parade route. “I wouldn’t miss it,” said Jamie Alderman, also of Lutz. “It’s a nice family atmosphere for the kids. We get the same spot every year.” Before the parade began, 8-yearold Jake Gemmill was up on an antique tractor, pretending to drive the hulking machine. The boy’s family, also of Lutz, come to the festivities each year, said Jake’s mom, Jen Gemmill. “It’s a nice community event. It just feels like it’s a great way to start the Fourth.” This year’s parade featured 66 units, with a large number of military vehicles and antique fire trucks. Scout troops, churches and area businesses also made a strong showing. It was one of those parades where people on the sidelines called out to family and friends who were riding on floats or walking down the route – and they answered back. Quite often, people in the parade would break ranks to go give someSarah Robison (left) poses with her prize-winning cake with Mark Carnes (right) who bought it during the cake auction at the Lutz Fourth of July celebration. The event doubled as Lutz’s 100th birthday party. (Photo by B.C. Manion)By Marie Abramov Laker correspondent Cassidy McDaniel’s pale blue-green eyes lit up merrily when she first found out she would embark on an adventure of poise, elegance, natural beauty and talent. Loving the spotlight, performing and being in front of the camera, the bubbly 9year-old from Lutz has become a finalist in the National American Miss Florida Pageant in Orlando this week. This is McDaniel’s first pageant, and she couldn’t wait to start all the preparations, including her talent portion. To Esther Dean’s “Let it Grow,” McDaniel began her two-minute dance routine, a combination of ballet and jazz. She moves fluidly from a cartwheel, to a number of different standing and sitting turns, to a few pointed kicks and splits to show her grace and flexibility. The up-tempo song sets a fast pace for the rather complex routine McDaniel’s dance instructor, Kathleen Dunas, choreographed for her. McDaniel has been one of Dunas’ pupils at Contempo School of Dance in Lutz. “She’s a hard worker,” Dunas said. “At the beginning of the year, she got added into my jazz class and her flexibility – she really needed to work on. I can tell throughout the year that she would go home and practice on what I would tell her every single week – I’d tell her to point her Cassidy McDaniel Spotlight falls on pageant contestantLutz celebrates 100 yearsSee LUTZ, page12 See PAGEANT, page12

Living Well St. Josephs Hospital is the First in Florida to Offer Non-invasive Test to Predict Stroke RiskHospital using three-dimensional technology to scan brain and neck to prevent stroke St. Josephs Hospital Interventional Neuroradiologist Matthew Berlet, M.D., is on the vanguard of stroke prevention, using Noninvasive Optimal Vessel Analysis (NOVA) to quantify the volume of blood flow through tiny blood vessels in the brain using three dimensional imaging. St. Josephs Hospital in Tampa is the first hospital in the Southeast United States to offer NOVA, which provides doctors with precise identification of each vessel for blood flow calculation in order to pinpoint specific areas of concerns, giving physicians a quantifiable idea of a patients risk for stroke. Its very difficult to image vessels that small,Ž said Berlet. This software provides a three dimensional view of the vascular system of the neck and gives physicians a numerical evaluation of blood flow in the brain without an invasive test.Ž For patients like Sam Hachem, who had a 99 percent stenosis in critical artery of the brain, NOVA is truly a lifesaver. He sought treatment at St. Josephs for his intracranial narrowing when medical therapies were not working. A stent was placed to open his artery but it was difficult to make sure there was no reoccurrence of his vessel narrowing without doing dangerous, invasive cerebral angiography. Mr. Hachems antiplatelet medication was not working to keep his stent open. After inserting the stent, I knew I needed a clear, accurate view of the blockages in his brain,Ž says Berlet. I knew about the NOVA technology and knew there were few places in the country with it. So I sent him to see Fady T. Charbel, MD, FACS, head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It helped make sure the stent was staying open and that his antiplatelet therapy was working.Ž Mr. Hachem returned the favor by donating the technology to St. Josephs. Mr. Hachem specifically wanted St. Josephs Hospital to have this software for the Tampa community,Ž says Berlet. We now have such a rare commodity … and the community needs to know about the importance and availability of NOVA.Ž The software is designed for patients currently diagnosed as being at-risk for stroke who are taking medication to prevent stroke. NOVA takes preventative care one step forward by being able to tell if a patient is improving with their current medical therapy, or if their prescriptions need to be adjusted. There is no direct alternative to the NOVA MRA system, but a cerebral angiogram can give the degree of narrowing. Unfortunately it is an invasive and expensive test that does not give the quantitative blood flow. It can only provide the degree of narrowing of the blood vessel. Not to mention, the patient is exposed to ionizing radiation and there is a chance of stroke during the procedure itself. Stroke is the third leading cause of death,Ž he continued. We now have the best technology to tell you how close you are to having a fatal stroke. Scott signs school safety legislation By Ed P i erce ep i erce@cnewspu b s.co m Sectional titles and berths in Little League state championship tournaments are up for grabs as local All-Star baseball and softball squads look to extend their seasons. Some District 25 Little League champions have already been crowned, but others have had to work around rainy and soggy fields in an attempt to complete tournament brackets. Four local teams were spared rainouts by sweeping to District 25 crowns early in their respective tournaments. In the 9/10 baseball division, New Tampa National claimed the district title and advances to this weekend’s sectional tourney at Lakewood Ranch. The winner earns a berth in the state championships. Lutz Red powered to the district crown in 10/11 baseball and qualified for the sectionals at Lakewood Ranch on Saturday. New Tampa American captured the District 25 Intermediate baseball title and advances to the sectionals at Lakewood Ranch this week. In Junior division softball, Dade City won the district championship and locked up a berth in the sectional tourney Saturday at Lakewood Ranch.Rain forced postponements of District 25 tournament games in 11/12 baseball, Junior baseball, Senior baseball, 9/10 softball and Senior softball. District champions will be decided in those divisions this week.All-Star teams participating in Florida Little League’s District 25 tournaments included Antioch Little League, Dade City Little League, Land O’ Lakes Little League, Lutz Little League, New Tampa Little League, North Seminole Little League, Temple Terrace Little League and Zephyrhills Little League.Lutz Little League will host the Florida State 11/12 Baseball Tournament opening on July 26.Sectionals await Little League All-Star champions The Laker/Lutz News staff report Gov. Rick Scott has signed legislation that requires district school board policies to list emergency response agencies responsible for notifying school districts of emergencies. The policies will also require the same agencies to notify private schools of major incidents such as fires or attempted break-ins.The legislation also includes a provision that enables schools to stock an emergency supply of epinephrine auto injectors to treat severe allergic reactions, according to a news release from Sachs Media Group. The legislation also enables school employees, who have been trained, to recognize the symptoms of anaphylaxis, to administer the shots when necessary, regardless of whether the child has been previously diagnosed. “I applaud Governor Scott and the Florida Legislature for making this bill a reality,” said Brenda Olsen, COO, American Lung Association in Florida. “The prevalence of children suffering from potentially life-threatening food allergies has risen dramatically in recent years and epinephrine injectors are the only thing that can effectively treat a potentially deadly anaphylactic reaction.” Anaphylaxis occurs when the throat swells shut due to an allergic reaction, typically to peanuts, tree-nuts, fish and shellfish. An epinephrine injector delivers medication to the bloodstream that can treat acute allergic reactions and stave off anaphylactic shock. If a child at school goes into anaphylactic shock, there are precious few seconds to intervene before the child suffocates. That’s why having an epinephrine injector close by is so crucial. With incidents involving tragic deaths due to food allergies deaths rising, national movement to have access to emergency treatment available in schools to treat severe allergies is catching on. The legislation is the result of the concerted efforts of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, the Florida Medical Association, the American Lung Association, Florida Association of Family Physicians and the Catholic Conference of Bishops. Mark Carnes of Lutz entertained the crowd by getting into bidding wars on several of the desserts. He drove up the prices and wound up buying quite a few cakes. “This man is going to have one heckuva sugar buzz,” Moore said, after Carnes came out on top of yet another bidding war. The auction raised $850, with Tracy Gaschler’s fivepound apple pie fetching $85, the highest price of the day. Phyllis Hoedt, chairwoman of Lutz’s Fourth of July festivities, was delighted by this year’s event. “I think it was a great day. I think everybody had a good time,” she said. While spectators in Lutz escaped downpours, Mother Nature was not as kind to other area celebrations. Rain was blowing sideways during a portion of the festivities at The Parks Ford of Wesley Chapel Freedom Festival at The Shops at Wiregrass on the evening of July 3. Rain put a damper on many of the planned festivities at Sparklebration, a 4th of July Festival and Fireworks Celebration at the Pasco County Fairgrounds in Dade City. “We fought rain all day long,” said Dicky Brown, vice president of the Pasco Fair Association, which stages Sparklebration. “We had two or three major, half-inch rains.” Organizers had a tremendous entertainment lineup, but many acts couldn’t perform because the stages were outdoors, Brown said.“It’s a one-day event, and you put your heart and soul into it,” Brown said. But he added: “What can you do? You can’t control Mother Nature.” Despite the disappointing weather, some entertainment was staged indoors, the petting zoo was under a tent, various contests went on as scheduled and people displayed a good attitude, Brown said. The 22-minute fireworks show, which began at 9:10 p.m. drew rave reviews from spectators, Brown said. This year, the fireworks were set off electronically, which produced a better result. “That’s the way to go,” Brown said. There were intermittent downpours at Family Night on the 4th at Exciting Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz. About 35 singers from the church’s Worship Choir had prepared special patriotic selections for the event, but were unable to perform because the rain posed problems for their equipment, said Linda Devore, administrative assistant to Pastor Ron Upton. On the plus side, the church’s Worship Orchestra and the event’s guest artist, Steve Amerson, did perform. The event also featured dozens of food trucks, several giant inflatables for the kids and plenty of room for people to sit on the lawn or pitch tents, to listen to music and take in the fireworks show. The wet weather didn’t seem to bother young children, who ran in the rain and splashed in puddles, Devore said. The kids also were able to use the inflatables for quite a while. Some spectators came and left because of the rain. “People with tents managed to tough it out,” Devore said. Others arrived later, closer to the time the fireworks were set to go off. “The fireworks finally did happen a little after 9,” Devore said. “I think it was a success after all. The Lord just gives us a spirit of joy, no matter what,” Devore said. Rain was blowing sideways during a portion of the festivities at The Parks Ford of Wesley Chapel Freedom Festival at The Shops at Wiregrass on the evening of July 3. Despite the rain, people appeared to be determined to have a good time. Children chowed down during the watermelon-eating contest and youngsters came dolled up in red, white and blue attire for the Little Miss and Mr. Firecracker contest. Some kids in the pageant showed composure beyond their years while others held tight to their mommies. The Freedom Festival concluded with a fireworks display that had such a flurry of fireworks at one point that many people in the crowd thought the show was over, until a few seconds later when the true finale began. Officials from The Shops At Wiregrass estimated about 10,000 people turned out for the four-hour Freedom Festival. her penchant for stuffed panda bears, her love of dance and her aspiration to become a jazz dance instructor one day. After that, she will showcase her personality and conversational skills by answering interview questions posed by the judges. Each of these categories is worth 30 percent, and the last 10 percent of the overall score is attributed to community service. Cassidy is also active in her local church, where she participates in car washes to help raise money for the poor, acts in plays and goes to a special Sunday mass with other children and attends Sunday school. If Cassidy wins the state pageant in Orlando for her age group, she will advance to nationals in August in San Diego. The state prize includes $1,000 in cash, a trip to Disneyland for two and a modeling scholarship. The national prize awards $5,000 in cash, extensive travel and major event opportunities as National American Miss for the year, a digital camera and a meeting with a Hollywood acting coach. Apart from her stage interests, she loves to play soccer and is part of a couple of local teams in Lutz where she plays mostly defense. She usually has one practice and one game per week. Her favorite color is purple, which is also the color of the curtains and walls in her room. She has a massive collection of stuffed panda bears, elephants, frogs and dogs on her bed and another large set of dolls on the other side of her room. Posters of Justin Bieber, Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush and photographs of Cassidy in various dance poses adorn her walls. one in the crowd a hug. The parade had a little bit of everything. Members of Vida Community Church sang “Happy Birthday” to Lutz, as their float made its way down the road. Belly dancers shimmied and martial arts kids kicked or chopped to break boards, as they made their way down the route. The GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club’s had a huge birthday cake on its float, to honor the community’s centennial. Kids and adults riding on floats got a kick out of spraying high-powered squirt guns at the crowd. Spectators seemed to enjoy it, too. When the parade wrapped up, the next order of business was to announce this year’s winner of the honorary Lutz Guv’na’s race.Four candidates vied for the title. Suzin Carr and Karin D’Amico were aiming to make history by becoming the first guv’na to ever win twice. They faced other contenders Susan Gulash and Lauren Leahey to win a race that is literally all about money. Whoever raises the most, wins. The four women raised a total of $12,596, with Carr winning the race by raising $8,159. “I got the sash back,” a jubilant Carr proclaimed. “This is an honor.” She thanked her husband Jim, her son Chandler and the rest of her supporters, especially the business community. “More than 90 businesses donated to my campaign,” Carr said. After Carr was sworn in, organizers moved on to the annual cake and pie auction. Bob Moore conducted the auction, seeking the highest bidders for 35 cakes and Lutz Little League players, one of the groups with deep roots in the community, took part in the Fourth of July parade.LUTZ, from page 1 foot or put her head down. I can tell she has a very good work ethic.” Unlike dance and a host of other interests like acting and soccer, McDaniel got involved with the National American Miss serendipitously. Cassidy’s father, Richard McDaniel, said she never would have thought to compete if an anonymous source didn’t recommend her to the pageant organization. A subsequent call from pageant officials led to McDaniel’s participation. “Someone submitted my name, and I was just like ‘I want to do it,’ ” McDaniel said. “My mom was like ‘Are you sure?’ and I was like ‘I want to do it.’ ” McDaniel’s eager spirit convinced her parents to bring her to pageant open call auditions. Out of about 200 kids in the junior preteen seven to nine age group, McDaniel was one of three or four who were chosen as finalists to compete in the Orlando state pageant. “She had four interviews,” her father said. “They can’t wear makeup. She just went down there and dressed casually.” The judges asked Cassidy questions about the color of her room, favorite animals, her hobbies and interests and her hopes for the future. Now as a state finalist, McDaniel is actively practicing her ballet and jazz routine for the talent competition and taking special classes to learn how to enunciate and walk with confidant elegance. The pageant is divided into four distinct categories. The first is formalwear, where McDaniel will don her deep pink multi-layered gown and strut across a grand stage escorted by her father. Cassidy will then make a personal introduction in front of the judging panel and a live audience, speaking clearly and loudly into a microphone about where she lives, Cassidy McDaniel of Lutz, 9, will compete as a finalist for the National American Miss Florida Pageant crown later this month in Orlando. Voted Florida’s No. 1 Weekly Sports Section Community SportsCommunity Sports By Jeff Odom jodom@cnewspubs.com Turnout still high The Lutz Independence Day 5K Run has grown to be one of the largest events in the area and this year’s race was no different.A total of 576 male and female runners of all ages competed in the 28th annual Fourth of July tradition, 20 less than the 2012 race record of 596, but more than a hundred more than 2011 when 462 people ran in the event.Technology upgrade For the first time since the race’s inception in 1985, electronic scoring monitors helped officials tally up times in a much easier fashion than in years past. According to race organizer Terry Donovan, each runner competed with an individual chip attached to his or her official number. Each chip recorded the exact time the runner crossed the timing mat to start the race and at the finish line.Because of the record number of runners in 2012, which overwhelmed scorers, Donovan felt the time was right to implement the technology this year. Prior to the event, organizers estimated more than 600 people would compete in not only the 5K, but also the Lutz One-Mile Fun Run, which followed.Defending champ not in attendanceLast year’s winner and Odessa resident, Matt Magee, did not compete in this year’s race, because of scheduling conflicts with Florida State University where he is enrolled as a freshman and competing with the Seminoles’ cross country team, according to his brother, David. Magee, 18, beat 38-year-old Andrew Chandler, a St. Petersburg resident, by a mere footstep at the finish line last year. Both finished with a time of 16 minutes, 15 seconds. It was the first win for Magee in any competitive running event. The victory acted as a springboard for his senior year at Steinbrenner High, where Magee was a consistent top finisher for the Warriors in multiple events in both boys cross country and boys track and field. Chandler, who also finished runner-up at the event in 2011, also did not compete in this year’s event.Lutz Independence Day 5K notebookHouston man takes top spotBy Jeff Odom jodom@cnewspubs.com Tyler Stahl’s red, white and blue running shorts weren’t the only thing standing out from the pack of runners at the 28th annual Lutz Independence Day 5K — his final place in the standings did too. Though Stahl finished in second place overall behind race winner Daniel Gollins of Texas, who won with a final time of 16 minutes, 8 seconds, the Land O’ Lakes High boys cross country and track and field standout took home the top spot in the ages 15 to 19 category, one of the most competitive groups in the event, at 16:22. “I went out a little too slow (at the start), but I’m glad I caught the guy in second place,” said Stahl, who finished fourth overall in last year’s race. Temperatures for the 8 a.m. start were cooler than last year, because of a storm system that brought heavy rains to the Tampa Bay area. Still, the increased humidity played a major role for some competitors, but not for the 17-year-old Stahl, who said he has gotten used to it over the years. “I just wanted to get him; that’s what I was thinking about,” Stahl said. “The heat and humidity was a little bit of a factor, but I’m used to it now, because I’ve been running in Florida for four years now, running cross country. So, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, because I’m sure all the rain we’ve had cooled the air temperature a little bit, so that wasn’t as bad. But I was fine with it.” On top of the podium finish, second place was even sweeter for the senior-to-be, because he beat out all members from Steinbrenner’s infamous “Boss Cross”, one of Land O’ Lakes’ biggest rivals in both track and cross country during the high school season. The Warriors defeated Stahl and the Gators for the Class 3A region track team title back in April. “It’s nice, because it gives us like an early season confidence boost for our whole team,” Stahl said. “Now that we know that all of their seniors pretty much graduated, we pretty much know we can beat them this season and it still feels good.” Other top finishers in the race included Tampa’s Larry Smart, who was third overall and No. 1 in the Master’s Category (16:25); Land O’ Lakes’ Tommy Brown, who was fourth overall and took the top spot in the 35-39 category (16:57); and Chris Cerreta of Lutz who placed fifth at 17:29. Jacki Wachtel of New Port Richey was the top female finisher in this year’s race with a final time of 17:47. She placed ninth overall. —Follow Jeff Odom on Twitter @JOdomLaker Though it did not break last year’s record of 596 competitors, this year’s 5K still had a high turnout with 576 people running in the race. At Florida State, Winterling served as assistant baseball coach and helped lead the Seminoles to three College World Series appearances and a berth in the national championship game in 1986. Launching the PHCC’s college baseball program in 1991, he has led the Conquistadors to national recognition and three consecutive appearances in the NJCAA Division II regional tournament. He said he believes communication between the athletic department and the college’s administration will be an essential part of his approach to the job. “I have really enjoyed working with our administrators and staff these first few weeks,” Winterling said. “I’m learning a lot of new things, but everyone has been tremendous in helping me.” Over the years he has coached more than 30 Conquistador athletes who have signed to play professionally and helped numerous others go on to play for four-year schools. In addition, Winterling teaches health and physical education at the college and serves as assistant women’s cross country coach. When his career ends, he hopes people will be appreciative of his efforts. “I’d want people to remember that I’ve been a very loyal and dedicated employee to the college and have lived and served the community in a positive manner.” Steve Winterling SPORTS Powder Puff footballThe Zephyrhills Bulldogs are taking registrations for Powder Puff football beginning July 8. CnewsPubs.com / 813-909-2800 COMMUNITY NEWS PUBLICATIONS July 10 2013 17 SPORTS The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report Saint Leo University men’s basketball coach Lance Randall has announced that assistant coach JR Blount has been promoted to associate head coach. Blount brings a lifetime of playing and coaching experience into his new title. He is entering his third season with the Lions and came to Saint Leo after concluding a successful professional playing career and four years at NCAA Division I Loyola University in Chicago. “JR has a great understanding of the game and a tremendous work ethic but more importantly he lives our Saint Leo core values every day,” Randall said. “As a father and a coach I am grateful this young man is such a strong role model for our players as well as my own children. I know that he will be a superstar in this profession someday.” In his first two seasons at Saint Leo, Blount has helped elevate Saint Leo Men’s Basketball into the national spotlight including amassing a 40-20 overall record, two NCAA Tournament appearances and a Sunshine State Conference Regular Season Championship. “First of all I would like to thank Dr. Kirk, Mr. Reidy and Coach Randall for this remarkable opportunity,” Blount said. “Coach Randall has been an outstanding mentor and teacher to me not only through coaching but equally present throughout the facets of my daily life. “It is a privilege to be honored with such a distinguished title under great leadership and guidance. I will strive to bring continued success to Saint Leo University and work in the likeness and image of our strong core values.” Blount is also a talented recruiter, using his knowledge of basketball in the Midwest to help rebuild the Saint Leo men’s basketball program upon the coaching staff’s arrival in 2011. Coach Blount was instrumental in recruiting and developing the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Marcus Ruh, the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Year Shaun Adams, and All-Conference players Trent Thomas and Jerrel Harris. “JR has been instrumental in the turnaround of our basketball program into a conference champion and a national ranking,” Director of Athletics Francis X. Reidy said of the Lions’ new associate head coach. “The promotion is well deserved for his tireless recruiting, game day preparation and leadership within the program.” After concluding his collegiate playing career, the tandem then coached together on the hardwood at Wisconsin-Stevens Point where, ironically, Randall served as the associate head coach and Blount was an assistant. Together, they managed to take the Pointers to the Division II National Championship. At Loyola, Blount was the recipient of the Male Athlete of the Year Award twice and finished his career ninth on the school’s alltime scoring list and finished 10th in career assists. Before attending Loyola, Blount was a standout high school basketball player at Whitefish Bay Dominican. Blount was named to the all-conference first team three times and was named a First Team All-State selection twice. He led his team to four consecutive conference championships and won state championships in 2004 and 2005. In his high school career, Blount was named team MVP three times. With his new role in place, Blount continues to prepare for the 2013-14 season alongside Randall. It will be a year where the Lions look to build on the 2013 Conference Title with more veteran leadership and another impressive recruiting class.Saint Leo promotes Blount to associate men’s basketball coach JR Blount The Laker / Lutz Newswww.cnewspubs.com
