Serving Lutz/Odessa Lutz NEWS FREE JULY 27,2011By Zack Petersonzpeterson@cnewspubs.comDon Vanderlaan was just 16 when he walked his way into a recruiting office.A few minutes later,he walked out, turned the corner and forged the necessary paperwork needed to be sworn in to the U.S.Navy. Within 30 minutes,Vanderlaan had volunteered his services to the United States during World War II. "The hardest part was telling my parents,"the Zephyrhills resident chuckled. Now 84,Vanderlaan's services for his country are being honored.Along with 24 other men,Vanderlaan recently visited Washington,D.C.to visit war memorials, all courtesy of the Honor Flight West Central Florida program. The cost? Free. Honor Flight started in 2005 as a national program determined to provide "honor flights"for American veterans. These veterans were given the opportunity to visit war memorials in Washington D.C.in a single day. In 2010,the Honor Flight West Central Florida was established as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization created to provide local veterans this reflective privilege. "We're losing a thousand World War II veterans every day,"Vanderlaan said."They're trying to take everyone they can." The inaugural flight left Tampa International Airport at roughly 6 in the morning, with all 25 veterans aboard accompanied by their "guardians"and medical staff. To accommodate for any critical health conditions, the Honor Flight program assigns a guardian to each veteran,a caretaker for the day,as well as a wheelchair to any veteran who requires its use. Those volunteer caretakers pay their own way, about $400 each. After a full day in Washington,D.C.touring the war memorials, veterans are greeted back in Tampa by a parade of people welcoming them back home.Waving American flags greeted their eyes, grateful cheers rang in their ears and passionate handshakes gripped every veteran returning home fromHonor Flight recognizes WWII veterans Don Vanderlaan stands by the World War II memorial during his trip from Honor Flight, where he had the opportunity to honor deceased veterans. Now, he hopes to bring more recognition to this free experience available to all U.S. veterans. "It doesn't cost a nickel," Vanderlaan said. Martinez Middle Principal earns statewide honorBy B.C.Manionbcmanion@cnewspubs.comThe Florida PTA has named Shaylia McRae,principal at Martinez Middle in Lutz, as its Outstanding Middle School Principal of the Year. The principal's nomination, submitted by the PTSA board at Martinez Middle, praises McRae's leadership and ability to collaborate with others. The principal has introduced many new programs to Martinez Middle since becoming the school's instructional leader, the nomination notes. Karen Cuervo, chairwoman of the board's awards committee last year, was thrilled by McRae's selection. "Ms.McRae is an all-around great principal and deserved this award 100 percent," Cuervo said in an email. The principal strives to bring together the PTSA,the students, the administration, teachers and community to work toward a common goal the welfare and success of the school's students. McRae also knows how to connect with people, says Cuervo, who is the incoming president of the school's PTSA board. "She has a lot of personality and makes being on the PTSA fun,"Cuervo notes."I look forward to working with the Martinez administration every year." The school has taken great pride in having a cohesive team of administrators, staff, parents and students since the day it opened, according to the nomination letter. McRae,who is the school's second prinMonique Montoute was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame for the Caribbean last summer as an assistant instructor. Nominated for her leadership, Montoute is the youngest American female to be inducted.By Zack Petersonzpeterson@cnewspubs.comMonique Montoute has always been known for trying as many sports as possible. As a freshman at Academy of the Holy Lakes,Montoute alone was involved in cross-country,played on the softball team and was part of the first all girls soccer team. "I'm one of those people who tried everything,"Montoute said."In middle school,I tried every sport." But since age 2,Montoute has been involved in karate, and her passion and dedication for the sport has led her to achievements that she will forever be remembered for. Just last summer,Montoute was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame for the Caribbean at the age of 15 as an assistant instructor. As of now,she is the youngest female American to do so. "It's a very big honor,"Montoute said."I couldn't believe it when my name was called because I was so shocked." For Montoute,it all started when someone from her dojo,Purple Dragon's Florida Academy of Don Jitsu Ryu,nominated her to the position. According to Montoute, they admired her leadership, and Montoute greeted the news with jubilation and appreciation. "For the first year I was really happy," Montoute said."People would come up to me and say,Congrats Monique, you deserve this.' I always do my best to encourage everyone to be their best,"she said. However, the sudden success did little to sway Montoute from her precise work ethic. In her environment, she lives, breathes and dreams karate. Everybody in the Montoute family is involved in Don Jitsu Ryu karate, and the morals, ethics and codes that comprise it helps set the tone the Montoute family operates under.Karate Kid'strikes her way into Martial Arts Hall of FameSee PRINCIPAL,page21 See KARATE,page21 Call AttorneyJIM HOLLIDAY813-868-1887 AUTO ACCIDENT?SLIP & FALL? Seney said the goal is to collect two to four tons a month from each container. The community paper recycling program earns money for fire stations, libraries, parks and schools. "This program is a great way for someone to show their support for these community services,"Bryant said. "It's a real win for everyone." The new bins were provided at no charge by U.S. GreenFiber,a paper recycler and re-manufacturer. GreenFiber will service the bins and turns cardboard, newspaper and other paper products into insulation at its plant in Ybor City. The insulation is marketed at local retailers such as Home Depot and Lowe's. Seney cautioned users to follow the rules for recycling paper so unusable items do not contaminate the entire bin. "You can recycle anything that's paper fiber that's not contaminated by human or food waste, which means no paper towels, napkins, paper plates, pizza boxes,"Seney said."And no plasticized paper like menus."The paper recycling bins'bright-green color and frog logos make them easy to find, according to Seney. The flattened cardboard boxes should go through the top of the containers and there are openings on the side to deposit the other paper products.Seney said the new bins are in part due to increased demand from residents wanting ways to recycle paper easier. In Pasco's 2010 resident survey, nearly 75 percent of responders said they wanted easier ways to recycle. Specifically, the more than 1,800 people who participated indicated they wanted the county to have small plastic bins for curbside pick as Hillsborough County and Dade City do.Currently,Pasco residents must buy blue bags from area grocery stores if they want to recycle materials such as plastics, glass and metals. However, the county program does not include paper or cardboard pick-up.Seney said there are no immediate plans to add paper to curbside pickup,or small bins to replace the blue bag system. By Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comPasco residents still cannot recycle paper from their driveway, but the county's recycling department is working to make it easier to save trees. Pasco Recycling and the Pasco District School Board's Conservation Department are joining up to put 25 new large paper bins at various locations throughout the county. The effort is called Bring It from Home, which emphasizes the initiative needed by citizens to save natural resources. "A person can reduce their curbside garbage by as much as 50 percent by recycling all paper products in their home,"said Jennifer Seney,Pasco Recycling coordinator. "This includes corrugated cardboard, thin cardboard like cereal boxes, newspaper, magazines, phone books, junk mail, office paper, paper bags and paper packaging." There are now 100 bins throughout the county, plus facilities to recycle at all of Pasco's public schools. "With close to 90 school campuses and Pasco County adding another 25 sites,we've achieved an amazing depth of coverage for paper recycling drop off,"said Karen Bryant, the Pasco School District's recycling coordinator."It is exciting that any citizen should be able to find a recycling drop-off site within a few miles of their home." By Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comPasco County government will have to lay off 14 workers to make its budget for next year, but the total will not likely add to the area's unemployment numbers. County Administrator John Gallagher's spending plan for the 2011-12 fiscal year is roughly the same as the current budget;just more than $1 billion. The proposal cuts 31 jobs,of which only 14 are currently filled. Fortunately for those affected, the county will add 14 new positions in other departments with similar job descriptions. Those affect will be given first priority for those new jobs, according to Gallagher. "Most of the jobs would be cut from departments that are paid for with property taxes, like the parks department,"Gallagher said."The new jobs will be in utilities and stormwater departments. Those are paid for with fees." The proposed budget Gallagher presented is based on the assumption the county commissioners will not raise the property tax rate. Pasco property appraiser Mike Wells said the value of property dropped 2.5 percent this year, but predicts the prices have bottomed out. "I think we might be at or very near the bottom,"Wells said. Also, for the fourth straight year, county workers will not receive a raise. The proposal also calls for closing the remaining two public swimming pools, located in Land O'Lakes and Hudson,to save $290,000 in annual operating costs and $100,000 in repairs.County Commissioner Jack Mariano said he will not vote for a budget that includes drying up the facilities. "It's vital that we have these pools open," Mariano said."I think we could work a deal to keep them open with private companies running them. That will keep the cost down." County parks director Rick Buckman said he has a tentative agreement with the Land O'Lakes Lightning swimming club to operate the pool at the Land O'Lakes Recreation Complex on Collier Parkway. He did not elaborate on any details, except the plan would include some public use. Buckman said no club has stepped up to help run the pool in Hudson. The swimming and diving teams from Land O'Lakes,Sunlake,River Ridge and Hudson high schools use the public pools for home meets and practices.Buckman said he will be meeting with the coaches from the schools to discuss further options. While raises and pools may be on the chopping block,Pasco's budget situation could have been a lot worse if the county hadn't saved $4.2 million from the current fiscal year.Additionally, the state Legislature's new requirement for government workers to contribute 3 percent toward their own pension plan saved another $5.6 million. The proposed budget will continue to be discussed at various workshops and commission meetings before being adopted in September. It will need to be approved to go in place by Oct.1. Children have fun in the sun at field dayBy B.C.Manionbcmanion@cnewspubs.comThey glided down water slides, jumped around in a bounce house and ran through sprinklers, laughing and screaming with joy.Other kids were singing songs or doing crafts or cooling off under two shade tents that were equipped with soaker hoses. No matter what they were doing, hundreds of kids appeared to be having a blast last week at a Camp Wow! Field Day at Withlacoochee River Park. The event was just one of many summer activities provided to children who are taking part in the Pasco Learning and Activity Centers of Enrichment (PLACE) program this summer. The program is part of Pasco County Schools. Last week's camp involved about 700 kids from Seven Oaks,New River,Double Branch,Watergrass,Wesley Chapel, Woodland,Sand Pine,Veterans,Quail Hollow,Chester Taylor and Pasco elementary schools. "We're bringing vacation to the kids. These kids don't always get to go on vacations,"said Karla Graziano,PLACE program coordinator. In addition to the field days, the kids have also had a chance to go swimming and skating and to try their hand at gemstone mining. Before the summer ends, they'll also get to go to a Tampa Bay Rays'baseball game. At last week's field day,the dunk tank was one of the most popular attractions. Kids took turns tossing softballs at a target, trying to soak Mary Grey, the supervisor of the PLACE program. Grey egged them on,good-naturedly. Apparently, lots of the kids were good shots. By mid-morning,Grey estimated she'd been dunked more than 50 times. The kids seemed to love the water slide each gliding down in his or her unique fashion. And,Rebekah Barragan,8 and Bailey Bessette,7,giggled as they made their way around a course chock full of water-related challenges. Jesyriam Garcia, who works at the PLACE Program at Seven Oaks Elementary, said the kids had been looking forward to the day and it appeared to be living up to their expectations. "They're really having fun.I think it's wonderful,"she said.CnewsPubs.com / 813-909-2800 THE LAKER / LUTZ NEWS July 27,2011 3 Splish-splash and having a blast Conner Villa, 5, already has a sense of style as he glides down the water slide. By B.J.JarvisPasco Extension Horticulture Agent and DirectorSo many times beautiful trees are crammed into small spaces on a residential lot or narrow commercial property.Stately live oaks that grow 100-feet tall and wide are often planted in communities ill equipped to handle such a large tree. What is a gardener with a small space to do? No garden is complete without the grace and beauty of trees.Relying on pruning to keep a large plant in bounds is not a sound approach.Don't even think about living without beautiful trees.Instead focus on one that thrive in a small space. Choose plants that are perfectly suited to smaller gardening spaces and those that will naturally mature into a height and width that fits your garden space. Outstanding small trees well suited for this region's conditions include: Butterfly cassia Chaste-tree Crape myrtle Fringe-tree Hong Kong orchid tree Hornbeam Loquat Loropetalum Magnolias Redbud Sweet acacia Taiwan flowering cherryEach of these grows no more than 25 feet tall or so and no more than 25 feet wide. Residents can be assured that plantings won't be out of scale with the home and that the tree doesn't take over the whole block. Here are few extra tree-planting pointers: Don't plant anything too close to the foundation.Use a garden hose to create a circle the size of the full tree width to get a better feel for future dimension. Stay 20 feet from house. For safety sake, position trees so they do not obstruct view of street or driveway. Often smaller trees have a more compact root system, but they generally don't perform well in that skinny slice of green between the sidewalk and road. Groundcovers or perennials may be better suited so trees aren't blamed for lifting the concrete later. When planting, make the hole two to three times wider than the tree's container.Don't go any deeper. The bigger the tree at planting, the longer it takes to properly establish in the ground.Water is key.Without rainfall, water daily for the first one to two months, then three times per week for another one to two months and finally, weekly until established. No fertilizer is needed for at least four to six weeks after planting because growers typically apply a slow-release fertilizer before plants leave the nursery. 813-909-2800 / CnewsPubs.com THE LAKER / LUTZ NEWS July 27,2011 6 By Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comFor the second consecutive time,Pasco County Commissioner Ted Schrader will face a long-time supporter in the Republican primary. In 2008 it was San Antonio developer John Nicolette, and now it is Zephyrhills citrus grower and cattle rancher Ronald Oakley. Oakley,65,said he supported Schrader's conservative leadership he brought to county District 1,which covers most of east Pasco, but now wants the commissioner's job.He filed the paperwork at the end of June for next year's primary. Oakley said the decision to run was not because of anything he specifically disagreed with Schrader on. "It's nothing like that,"Oakley said. "There isn't a grudge or anything like that.I decided I needed to run and this would likely be my last chance to do so.I just happen to live in the same district as Ted." Pasco's five commissioners must live in the district they represent, but are elected by all county voters for a four-year term. Oakley said his main goal,if elected, will be to decrease the size of government to help streamline things like permitting to help business flourish. Oakley also served on the Southwest Florida Water Management District, commonly called Swiftmud, since 2007 and was the organization's chairman last year, but resigned in May in part because of the political run.He said his other main goal will be to ensure Pasco will have a sustainable water supply. "I do find that strange and ironic," Schrader,55,said."I don't understand why he would bring up the size of government. I've had a history of lowering property taxes.Swiftmud hasn't." Oakley grew up in Dade City, graduated from Pasco High and has a bachelor's degree in accounting from Carson-Newman College in Tennessee. He owns several citrus groves with the name Oakley Groves Inc., raises cattle and owns a trucking company. Oakley was appointed to Swiftmud by former Gov.Charlie Crist and said,"Being on the board was one of the most humbling things I've done. It's a big responsibility because we make sure everyone in the district has water for farming and daily living." Swiftmud covers all or parts of 16 counties from Levy and Marion in the north to Charlotte in the south, including all of Hillsborough and Pasco.Members of the board are unpaid. Oakley said if elected he will seek a spot on the board of directors for Tampa Bay Water, the regional suppler of water for unincorporated Pasco,Hillsborough and Pinellas counties and the cities of New Port Richey,Tampa and St.Petersburg.Schrader is currently on that board serving as one of Pasco's representatives.Schrader filed to run for his fourth and, he says, final term early in June.He said he has counted on Oakley and his family as supporters since he first successfully ran for the commission in 2000.Schrader received more than $928 in contributions from the Oakleys in 2008,according to county records.Schrader's family has a long history in Pasco's politics as his grandfather,Arthur Schrader, served as the District 1 commissioner for more than 20 years. Bill Bunting,Pasco's GOP state committeeman, said it will be an "interesting race" that could divide the east Pasco political establishment. "They both have political experience," Bunting said."Ted as a county commissioner and Ron as the head of Swiftmud. They've both got good credentials and having competition is a good thing." The Republican primary for the spot is in August 2012.So far,no Democrat has filed to run.The Pasco Commission currently has no Democrats.Oakley files for Pasco District 1 seat 4710 Land O' Lakes Blvd. Land O' Lakes/ TuesFri 9am-6pm Sat 8am2pmPRECISION CUTSby Theresa813.995.2884 GET A FREE RAFFLE TICKETWITH YOUR HAIRCUTWeekly Drawings Every Friday STIHL has you coveredwith protective apparel and accessories. 813-909-2800 / CnewsPubs.com THE LAKER / LUTZ NEWS July 27,2011 8 By B.C.Manionbcmanion@cnewspubs.comMartinez Middle School will serve as a model site for schools throughout the nation that are implementing the College Board's SpringBoard curriculum. The school was notified of its selection in a June 24 letter to Principal Shaylia McRae from Pamela L.Nelson, vice president of SpringBoard. The middle school is among the inaugural group of schools to be designated for the distinction.Strawberry Crest High, located in Dover, received the designation for high schools. The two Hillsborough County public schools were the only schools in the Tampa Bay region to be among the 14 finalists considered for the distinction. The award carries $10,000 worth of SpringBoard professional development services and also may include opportunities to pilot new and innovative products and services. McRae is delighted by her school's honor and she gives considerable credit for the achievement to her staff for the collaborative work it has done. "It's the teachers that are doing the work, day in and day out. They're doing the planning, they're monitoring the progress of students. They're putting together all of the work that needs to be done,"McRae said. "They work together in professional learning communities, every grade, every subject." The essence of SpringBoard is to deliver a rigorous curriculum in a student-centered learning environment,McRae said. Teachers do "backward planning"which involves looking at what they want students to know and figuring out how to get there, she said. "We definitely have a very collaborative culture at the school. That's what makes it work,"the principal said. "You're not on an island by yourself as a teacher. You're working together,on a team of professionals to help the kids. "They recognize each other strengths and they really build on that. They're not afraid to help each other. They're not afraid to share. They're not afraid to get help,"said McRae,giving her staff 90 percent of the credit for the school's accomplishment and granting 10 percent of the credit to herself for her leadership and support. SpringBoard's Nelson commended Martinez Middle in her letter:"The integration of SpringBoard into your school's professional learning communities received high marks from our site selection team, and is representative of the quality of your implementation." SpringBoard aims to prepare students to perform well in Advanced Placement courses,in college and in other postsecondary experiences. "The focal point is student learning, with high levels of student engagement with a rigorous curriculum. It starts right with sixth grade,"McRae said.SpringBoard's curriculum is the foundation for the Hillsborough County's middle school and high school language arts program and serves as a supplement to the mathematics curriculum for those grades. The curriculum includes numerous strategies that are intended to help students become more effective learners. For instance,in language arts, one strategy involves making predictions about what information will be presented next.Another strategy calls for summarizing or paraphrasing material, and a third strategy calls for conducting timed writing exercises. The "predicting"strategy "helps the reader to be actively involved, interested and mentally prepared to understand ideas,"according to SpringBoard materials. The "summarizing or paraphrasing"strategy "helps students to comprehend or recall text." SpringBoard is the foundational instructional component of the College Board's College Readiness System and is used by more than 1 million students in more than 1,000 schools nationwide.Martinez Middle named model for SpringBoard curriculum 7924 Melogold Circle Land O'Lakes, FL34637 813.996.0161 Golf & Country Club Not Valid For Twilight Or With Any Other Special Offer Must Present Ad18 Holes of Golf Including Cart Expires 8/10/11* SAVE 80% The Canadian Drugstore38176 Medical Center Ave. Zephyrhills between Florida Hospital & the old PublixIt's safe,it's simple and it makes sense Abilify 15mg30 tabs $67.43 Actos 30mg30 tabs $66.46 Advair 250mg60 doses $95.48 Aricept 5mg30 tabs $71.80 Celebrex 200mg30 tabs $51.74 Cialis 20mg20 tabs $99.07 Januvia 100mg30 tabs $95.72 Lavitra 20mg30 tabs $99.52 Lexapro 10mg 30 tabs $55.45 Lipitor 20mg30 tabs $62.16 Nexium 40mg30 tabs $59.95 Plavix 75mg30 tabs $57.05 Spiriva 18mg30 caps $66.06 Viagra 100mg20 tabs $96.06 UP TOOn Generic Medications! The foundation will support the hospital's efforts to provide healthcare by working with the surrounding communities. For example, the foundation at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills, which is owned by Adventist Health System that will run the Wesley Chapel facility,is currently raising money for its hospital's new Breast Health Center. Carolyn Sentelik,Florida Hospital Zephyrhills Foundation executive director, said the decision to support the new breast center was reached after a lot of communication with the public.Sentelik, who has been with the Zephyrhills foundation for about a year, said the organization also does community outreach and support projects throughout the year. For example, the group organized a fishing tournament in May that raised $11,000 for the future breast center. It also puts together the annual Sister Stroll each October, where those affected by breast cancer can learn about the disease and walk the hospital's fitness trail as a mini Relay For Life-style event."The foundation is small, but mighty," Sentelik said."We have two employees and a lot of volunteers." Bladon said there are no specifics about the direction the Wesley Chapel foundation will take, but predicts it will do the same general work as its sister organization in Zephyrhills. "We are putting together our board of directors right now,"Bladon said. She then added,"After the hospital is built and up and running, what's going to happen is our focus will shift to finding what the community needs.Giving the community the best healthcare possible. That might be technology;that might be new services. It will be whatever the community needs in healthcare." While the hospital is still more than a year from opening,Blandon said the foundation is already "up and running now." Bladon comes to the foundation after spending most of her career in the financial services. She was most recently a vice president of the business banking division with Synovus Bank for just less than four years, where she served both Hillsborough and Pasco counties. "Connie brings a strong breadth of business experience and leadership to our new organization,"said Brian Adams,Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel CEO."Her involvement in the community and ability to draw people to a common cause will help to establish our new hospital as the healthcare facility of choice throughout the Wesley Chapel and New Tampa communities." While Bladon is new to healthcare, she is not a stranger to the volunteering and community support role she will have with the foundation. She said her parents,Connie and Vern, taught her and her brother John to always help others. Some of the volunteer and civic positions she has served in include president of the Rotary Club of New Tampa and its foundation,on the board of the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce and was a part of the Friends of the Library at the New Tampa Branch Library. She has also been on the executive committee for Relay For Life of New Tampa and on the board of Outreach Assisting Students in Schools (OASIS)."I grew up with a family that believed in giving back to the community,"Bladon said. She then added,"My father was always in public service. He was a state representative for five terms and then was in an appointed position. We did a lot of not-for-profit work because of that.My mother was a (Springfield College) professor and did a lot of the same things."Bladon said she is currently looking for anyone who wants to volunteer with the foundation. Those interested should either email her at Connie.Bladon@ahss.org,or visit www.fhwesleychapel.org and click the foundation tab.True volunteer now works to give back Connie Bladon(Includes pre-anesthetic exam, anesthesia, pain & antibiotic pre-medication) Dogs & cats must be healthy and current on vaccines & at least 3 months old but not more than 5 years old.Dogs should be at least 5 lbs.,Cats,3 lbs. 813-909-2800 / CnewsPubs.com THE LAKER / LUTZ NEWS July 27,2011 12 Killeen to coach academy baseballMatt Killeen has been hired to coach the Academy at the Lakes baseball team, according to Wildcats athletic director Tom Haslam. "Matt has the desire to coach these kids," Haslam said."He has been an assistant with me on the boys basketball team, but has experience with baseball too. We're lucky to have him." Killeen will also be a physical education instructor at the academy. The coaching position opened when Ben Drawdy left the post during last season, his second year with the program. The Wildcats went 4-9-1 in 2011.DeHaas to guide Gators girlsKaren DeHaas was recently named the girls cross country coach at Land O' Lakes High, according to Gators athletic director Karen Coss. "Karen has been around the sport for years and assisting as a volunteer with Land O' Lakes High for the last couple of years," Coss wrote in an email."She has a great rapport with the girls and is very enthusiastic about taking over as the girls' coach this year." DeHaas said she has been at every practice and meet as a volunteer assistant since her granddaughter,Ashley Ford, joined the GatorsYour Neighborhood Sports Source Community SportsCommunity Sports Wildcats athletics scores big across the boardBy Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comAcademy at the Lakes is still a relative newcomer to interscholastic athletics, but the Wildcats are showing they are ready for district championships and deep postseason runs. The academy became a member of the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) five years ago, according to Wildcats athletic director Tom Haslam. "From the beginning,we wanted to be competitive in every sport we have,"said Haslam, who became the academy's athletic director two years ago."We've worked to get the right coaches in place and build the interest for the kids so they want to go out and represent their school on the field." The Wildcats fielded their first girls golf team in the 2010-11 school year. The new squad set the tone for all other academy teams by winning the first district championship in school history. Senior-to-be Ellen Crowley, who made the All-Laker/All-Lutz News girls golf team, shot a team-low 86 at the Class 1A-District 9 tournament. "It was really fun to have a team," Crowley said."I'd been playing on the boys team since I was in sixth-grade because there weren't enough girls to have a girls team.We kept getting better and better each week and ended up on top of the district." Also doing new things for the Wildcats this year was graduating senior Mike Davidson. He became the first boys golfer at the academy to advance individually to regionals by shooting a 98 in districts. The six-man football team also had a season to remember in 2010,the first for Pasco County coaching veteran John Castelamare at the academy. Castelamare has coached for 38 years in Pasco public schools, including 10 seasons at Wesley Chapel. "It's a little different from where I was, but the kids worked really hard all season," Castelamare said."They just had to get used to a new system and the workouts. They've come a long way from last spring."The football team lost only two seniors from the 2010 squad that went 7-5 and reached the Florida Christian Association of Private and Parochial Schools (FCAPPS) playoffs.Castelamare said the ranks have swelled from eight players last spring to 21 now.The football program also had a spring game for the first time;an intrasquad contest in May. "There were a lot of people there," Castelamare said."It was like a regular season game. The support is pretty good. Everybody supports everybody. The basketball program supports football, and we go to the soccer games. It's a nice family atmosphere here. Most of the athletes play a lot of sports. Our quarterback plays four sports,so the camaraderie is good at the school." The Wildcats girls basketball program picked up where the fall sports left off, going 19-5 en route to winning the 1A-9 district championship and reaching the first regional finals in school history. Academy first-year coach Karim Nohra took over a team that was 0-15 the season before and got them believing they could play with anyone. "We had to start from the very bottom," Nohra said."They put in the work and became a very good team, especially defensively. Not a great team, but good and we're hoping for more improving this year." The program returns most of its players for 2011-12,including junior-to-be forward Andrea Mauger. Mauger averaged 20 points per game last year and was named to the All-Laker/All-Lutz News second team for her efforts. She also qualified for the regional track and field event in the shot put by placing third in the 1A-9 district meet with a toss of 29-11.75. The Wildcats softball team made the regional tournament in 2011,but it wasn't the program's first appearance. The academy has made the postseason every season since 2008,including winning the first playoff game in school history in 2010. "We exceeded my expectations,"said second-year Wildcats softball coach Jack Shirling."The first few weeks was touch and go with the number of kids.We had a lot of players in the basketball program,so we made general announcements to get people to come and play. It's such a small school, but we exceeded all expectations to get into regionals." Shirling said he was most impressed with how the student-athletes manage to juggle their schedules. "The kids themselves have shown they are good athletes,"Shirling said."You have some kids playing two and three sports, and to do that and hold their academics up, which is far more important than sports, just says an awful lot about the students here.I give those kids a ton of kudos because they're doing everything and anything to help that school." By Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comNewly named Saint Leo University men's basketball coach Lance Randall has made his first coaching hire, naming J.R.Blount as his second-in-command. Blount played NCAA Division I basketball as a four-year starter while at Loyola University in Chicago, where he was coached by Randall. "J.R.is an extremely bright young coach," Randall said."His mental toughness and determination as a player were unmatched. He has a keen understanding of the game of basketball and a great attention to detail." It is the second time Blount and Randall have coached together, following a stint at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point when both were assistants.Together, the tandem helped the Pointers win the Division II national championship. "I couldn't be more excited for this opportunity,"Blount said."I've loved working with coach Randall and we're ready to make Saint Leo into a winner." Blount earned two team MVP awards while in college, was named to the Preseason Horizon League second team twice and was picked as the league's Player of the Week twice. He set the Ramblers program record for most points in a single game with 42. He was also named the Loyola Male Athlete of the Year twice and is the programs all-time leading score and is 10th all time in assists. The Milwaukee native also played professionally in Europe, earning British Basketball League all star status and was named to the all-league third team in 2010-11.He finished fourth in the league in scoring and second in assists that same year. Blount graduated with a double major in psychology and sociology from Loyola. He is now attending UW-Stevens Point's graduate school of education and will join the Lions after he completes his degree.CnewsPubs.com / 813-909-2800 THE LAKER / LUTZ NEWS July 27,2011 13 SPORTS By Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comWesley Chapel will need to find a new starting quarterback as sophomore-to-be Alex McGough has transferred to Gaither. Both Gaither coach Jason Stokes and Wesley Chapel coach Ben Alford confirmed McGough is now a Cowboy.Stokes said the 6-foot-2,150 pound McGough is already participating in 7-on-7 competitions and other team activities. "He's a good kid who is still learning the offense,"Stokes said."We're going to find a way to work him into the offense this year because he is very talented." McGough completed 42 of 102 passes for 418 yards and one touchdown as a freshman in 2010,guiding Wesley Chapel to a 3-7 record. He was also running the Wildcats first-team offense in the spring and at the start of the Pasco County 7-on-7 league. McGough said he was looking forward to playing another season with a year of experience at Wesley Chapel, but he said he had to move.He declined to comment on what forced the change in address into Hillsborough County.Alford said he first learned McGough was leaving the Wildcats program on June 14.He said there is no true leader for who will take over as the starting quarterback, but did say Troy Cothan had been running the second team offense during the summer."Troy was out of town when we found out last week Alex was leaving, and Angel Locicero stepped up and filled in for a week," Alford said."He stepped up big yesterday in 7-on-7 and he really impressed me with how the guys rally around him and how he is such a leader out there. You will find nobody that loves the game as much as Angel."Locicero has never taken a snap at quarterback in a high school game.Alford said he is likely to see time on both offense and defense in 2011. "Losing Alex is going to hurt us,there is no doubt about that,"Alford said."I thought he was doing a lot of things better this year and was going to take a major step forward. We'll just need to regroup and find out who will be our starting quarterback in the fall." McGough's transfer will also affect two other Wildcats programs. He was a goalkeeper for the Wesley Chapel boy soccer team as a freshman and recorded four shutouts. McGough also played in five games for the baseball team as an outfielder, where he posted a .400 batting average with three RBI and one steal in 2011. The Cowboys have openings at both spots,as starting goalkeeper John Nardozzi and outfielder Zach Jackson both graduated. However,Gaither has an established starter under center for the football team.Junior-to-be Shug Oyegunle has been the Cowboys starting quarterback since halfway through his freshman season. He completed 97 of 227 passes for 1,412 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2010.He also posted 287 rushing yards on 94 carries and four more scores to help Gaither finish with a 3-7 record.Gaither plays its kickoff classic contest at home against Sickles on Friday,Aug.26 at 7 p.m. The Cowboys first regular season game is also at home against Alonso on Sept.2 at 7:30 p.m.Wesley Chapel's kickoff classic is at South Sumter on Friday,Aug.26 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats first game is against cross-town rival Wiregrass Ranch at home on Sept.2 at 7:30 p.m.McGough leaves Wesley Chapel for Gaither Alex McGough was Wesley Chapel's starting quarterback last season, but the sophomore-to-be has transferred to Gaither. CnewsPubs.com / 813-909-2800 THE LAKER / LUTZ NEWS July 27,2011 19 By Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comThis week will look into how Ten Cent Road,Tommytown,Trilcoochee,Trilby and Wesley Chapel got their names. (1) TEN CENT ROAD dates back to the Great Depression. At the time,Work Projects Administration (WPA) workers built a road about 5 miles long that stretched from Ehren Cutoff to connect with Pump Station Road in Land O'Lakes. Those workers where paid 10 cents per hour, which is where the name comes from.(2) TOMMYTOWN was named after Tommy Barfield, who owned much of the area in Dade City after World War II. Barfield bought the land with Dorothy Lock, which was just next to what was then called the Pasco Packing Association and was later named Lykes Pasco.Barfield worked in the plant and also helped build many of the block duplex apartments in the area. The land also included what would eventually become Lock Street, also known as Calle De Milagros, which is named after Dorothy Lock.Today,Tommytown is generally associated with the area along Lock between 14th and 21st streets. (3) TRILCOOCHEE is the area between Trilby and Lacoochee north of Dade City along CR 575,also known as Trilby Road. The center of the community is along US 301.It is sometimes spelled Trilacoochee locally, but appears as Trilcoochee on most maps. (4) TRILBY was named for George du Maurier's Trilby, which was published serially in Harper's Monthly in 1894.It was released as a book for the first time in 1895 and sold 200,000 copies in the United States,a large number at the time. The popularity of the book is what caused the community's naming.Today, the area is normally associated with the area north of Dade City along CR 575,also called Trilby Road, around US 98. (5) WESLEY CHAPEL is the area between Land O'Lakes and Zephyrhills/Dade City in east Pasco County. The community was originally called Double Branch after the twin creeks that flowed across the area. Its named was changed after the opening of the Methodist chapel on the corner of SR 54 and Boyette Road. That church was named for John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement. The name Wesley Chapel first appeared in Hernando County school board records from 1877-1878,before Pasco separated from the county to its north.A post office operated in the area from 1897-1902.The post office was called Wesley on maps during that period. The area was considered part of Zephyrhills for most of the 1900s,until the current Wesley Chapel post office opened in 1997.Today the town has nearly 45,000 residents. If it was an incorporated city,it would be the largest municipality in Pasco. For additional information on these areas and how they got their names, visit www.fivay.org. The Laker and the Lutz News series on how historic places were named will continue throughout the summer.Information is provided by interviews with Pasco County historian Jeff Miller of Fivay.org and the West Pasco Historical Society.See how Lutz got its name next week.WHAT'S IN A NAMETracking history from Ten Cent to Wesley Chapel HOMES FOR SALEWILDERNESS LAKE PRESERVEshort sale. 5/3/3 with Media room, Large Master bed and bath. KANCHAN KAMATH, MD GERALD CURLEY, DO SCOTT SCHEIRER, ARNP CnewsPubs.com / 813-909-2800 LUTZ NEWS July 27,2011 21 Although one might find the discipline challenging,Montoute finds it to be a positive aspect of the family's dynamic. "It helps us be better people,"Montoute said."We're always going to have little conflicts and fights here and there;no one's perfect. But we have a lot of discipline and carry ourselves well. "Having a martial arts background separates you from everybody else in a good way." Montoute's parents have been practicing Don Jitsu Ryu since they were teenagers in Trinidad, and with Montoute's father being the owner of the Purple Dragon dojo in Florida,Montoute and her younger brother, Pierre, were born into the practice as well. Though time consuming, being surrounded by karate her entire life has allowed Montoute to excel in Don Jitsu Ryu at a rapid pace.KARATE,from page 1cipal,came into the role "on the heels of a very organized and beloved principal,"it adds. McRae "made the transition both positive and dynamic. Her willingness to step out of the box and create her own vision, while maintaining the core mission of the school was nothing short of brilliant.Without becoming stagnant in the process, she continues to focus on making clear the vision to provide the best education in the nation." In essence, she lives the mission of the school, which aims to provide all students the knowledge and skills needed to help them reach their highest potential, the letter states. "We believe it is her impeccable leadership that continues to make Martinez Middle School an "A"school in every way." The letter goes on to says that Martinez possesses "unique leadership qualities"that are necessary at the middle school level,a time at which adolescents are goingPRINCIPAL,from page 1the memorable journey. "I don't think there was one veteran who had a dry eye,"Vanderlaan said of the special welcoming. Before any veteran and guardian could participate in the honor flight program, they had to first fill out an application that included questions pertaining to the veterans' branch of service, their present address and any medications that they may take. It was about a year and a half ago that Vanderlaan filled out his application;he almost dismissed the idea when he never heard back from the organization. But when he finally got word from the organization,Vanderlaan knew this was a program he wanted to bring light to."There are so many people who don't know this exists,"Vanderlaan said."It's very well organized, and it's a very emotional trip too."There are so many veterans in this area that should know and experience it.It's too well kept of a secret." Vanderlaan first spread the news to American Legion Post 26,located in Plant City.As the Sergeant-at-Arms of the organization,Vanderlaan encouraged Post 26 to donate to the project and spread the word. Although the Honor Flight West Central Florida program receives most of its significant donations from Southwest Airlines and Bright House Networks, the contributions American Legion Post 26 put forth wereHONOR,from page 1 Family Medicine strives to care for you through all stages of life. Elinor Adler, chairwoman of the Florida PTA's awards program, said in an email that judges take a number of factors into consideration when determining the winners of the annual awards. Those include whether the principal promotes the purposes and mission of the Florida PTA,whether the principal encourages PTA members to get training at the county and state PTA levels, whether the principal attends PTA meetings and activities and what kind of impact the principal has on a school's students, parents and faculty. "Behind every successful PTA,there is a school principal who is supportive, helpful and personally involved in PTA.The judges look for the principal who best fits this description,"Adler said. The winning elementary principal came from a school in Broward County and the winning high school principal came from a school in Seminole County. enough to send two other supporters Pat Vanderlaan,Don's wife;and friend Charlotte Crumb. Pat Vanderlaan and Crumb applied to be guardians for the program at the same time Don did. However, they weren't processed in time to be a part of the inaugural flight. Instead, they were invited to take part in another flight, one that carried 71 veterans, almost three times the number of the first flight. "It was incredibly organized,"Crumb said."They helped with food, with drinks, with anything really." Vanderlaan and Crumb found volunteering to be a "very rewarding"experience. Crumb partnered with Leonard Greenwood,a veteran from Frostproof, while Vanderlaan assumed responsibility for Louis Masi of St.Petersburg. "We didn't actually meet our veterans till the morning of,"Vanderlaan said. But after a day of patriotic sentiments and emotional memories, special friendships were formed that would last a lifetime. There are an estimated 32,000 veterans residing in the Honor Flight West Central Florida coverage area that the organization wishes to include in this memorable experience. To honor each veteran in the manner they deserve,Honor Flight hopes to take up as many veterans as they can. Montoute received her black belt at age 11,and has since been continuing her training in the hopes of testing soon for her second-degree black belt. With her high level of skill,Montoute also plays a large role at the Purple Dragon dojo."I have to check with them first, but I can quickly take over a class normally taught by a third or fourth-degree black belt if they're unavailable,"Montoute said."I think it'd be real cool if one day I could move up to that level and own my own dojo when I'm older."But for now,Montoute continues to embrace her passion for Don Jitsu Ryu that has taken her all this way. "I just hope I can keep up my standards, keep up the training, keep up the good work,"Montoute said."But for now,I'm not training specifically to become an instructor (in the Martial Arts Hall of Fame),I'm just being myself."
