Central Pasco Chamber

forecasts bright future
The economic downturn has been
challenging, but there are bright spots,
said Kathy Dunkley, executive director of
the Central Pasco Chamber of
Commerce.
The East Pasco campus of Rasmussen
College, a 25,000-square-foot building
now under construction near Sunlake
Boulevard, will bolster area businesses,
she said.
Those attending classes or working at
the college will frequent the nearby busi-
nesses, Dunkley said. "That's going to
give them an economic boost."
College officials chose the location
purposefully because of its proximity to
Interstate 75 and the Suncoast Parkway.
And, it is directly across the street from a
72-acre site that T Rowe Price eventually
expects to use for an office complex for
up to 1,600 employees.
When it comes to turning the econo-
my around, small businesses will lead the
way, said Dunkley, who has been at the
helm of the Central Pasco Chamber of
Commerce for 12 years.
The chamber works with small busi-
nesses to encourage them to share
ideas and learn from each other,
Dunkley said.

Editions meant to help

you remember and reflect

By Diane Kortus
Publisher
Don't worry.
This New Year's
column isn't an-
other preamble
about setting
goals and declar-
ing resolutions.
Most of us
have been around
long enough to
know we'll be looking at the same reso-
lutions next year and will be substituting
our unrealistic goals with simpler ones
by March.
Instead of putting away extra money
every month, we'll be happy if we can
tack an extra $50 to a credit card pay-
ment. And we'll happily enjoy that slice
of cheesecake when we celebrate a spe-
cial occasion without giving a single
thought to those 20 pounds we prom-
ised to lose.
Although I no longer do the resolu-
tion thing, I do look at January
differently. It stands apart from other
months, which seem to blur together
and slide into each other until suddenly
it's January again.
January is like the beginning of a new
book. The first week is the table of con-
tents - time to look at what's ahead.
And that's what this week's paper is all
about.
We call this issue 2011 Ahead. It's the
sister publication to the edition we pub-
lished last week, 2010Again. Last week
we gave you updates on our most telling
stories of the year and this week we're
taking a look at issues and projects our
communities will most likely face in
2011.
These ambitious year-end editions are
a first for our company and quite an

achievement for our small staff. There are
only 15 of us putting out these papers
every week - from selling and design-
ing ads, to writing and editing stories, to
putting ads and stories together on the
page and sending them to our printer.
I'm proud of what we've accom-
plished. We've given you a good selection
of stories written to entertain, educate or
make your life a tad bit easier.Work on
2010 Again and 2011 Ahead started in
early November when we began to
sneak into our normal week the year-end
interviews, extra stories and the selling
and creating ads weeks in advance.
Compounding our challenge was the
busy holiday season when folks did not
have time to return calls and e-mails to
reporters and sales reps. But, my staff's
perseverance and hard work got the job
done.
Every employee was instrumental in
the success of these issues, but a few
stand out.
Leading the editorial staff was
Associate Editor Joe Humphrey, who
early on saw how 2010Again and 2011
Ahead could complement each other.
Customer Service Reps Carolyn Bennett
and Gena Crowder sweet talked cus-
tomers into getting their Christmas and
NewYears ad copy into them even be-
fore their Thanksgiving leftovers were
gone. Our art team of Stefanie
Burlingame and Matt Mistretta deserve
kudos for working late many evenings so
that ads were ready to proof the next
day and pages designed in advance.
I want to thank my staff for their
commitment to a job well done. And to
our readers, we hope you find 2010
Again and 2011 Ahead, an enjoyable way
to remember life in your neighborhood
and to reflect on what's ahead in the
new year.

Region readies for

economic recovery

By B.C. Manion

Coming on the heels of a year that's been
dominated by news of double-digit unemploy-
ment and high foreclosure rates, leaders in
Hillsborough and Pasco counties want to change
the narrative.
Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken
Hagan led the push to have a ballot measure
placed on November's ballot that allows commis-
sioners to grant a property tax exemption to
companies locating or expanding in the county.
In pushing the measure, Hagan argued the
county needed another tool to help it spur the
economy to create more jobs.
In Pasco County, numerous efforts are under
way to lay the groundwork for companies to lo-
cate there and to help existing companies
flourish and grow.
Pasco is paying attention to both the big pic-
ture and the small details, said John Hagen,
president and CEO of the Pasco Economic
Development Council.
Big things - like tax advantages and good ac-
cessibility - help make a community attractive
to new businesses, Hagen said. But so do less ob-
vious things like clear development codes and an
efficient development process.
Pasco is rewriting its code to make it easier to

Roads rolling

out in 2011

By Kyle LoJacono
klojacono@cnewspubs.com

Pasco and north Hillshorobgh counties cur-
rently have several major road projects
underway. Here is a look at what drivers
and riders can look forward to on the high-
ways and byways across the area this year

Lutz-Lake Fern Road widening

The project to widen W Lutz-Lake Fern
Road is still on schedule for completion in
May, according to Hillsborough County Public
Works spokesman Steve Valdez.
The job is growing the two-lane highway
to four lanes from just east of the Suncoast
Parkway to the Boulevard of the Roses in Lutz
at a cost of $9.9 million. Hillsborough is pay-
ing for the construction and Pepper
Contracting Services Inc. is doing the job.
The construction site includes the en-
trances to Steinbrenner High, Martinez Middle
and McKitrick Elementary schools.The proj-
ect is mainly needed to handle the daily traffic
to and from the schools.
A future project, still unfunded, will further
widen Lutz-Lake Fern from Boulevard of the
Roses to 300 feet west of Dale Mabry
Highway. That later job is projected to cost
about $58 million, according to Valdez.

US 41 widening
The $14.8 million project to widen US 41
will be completed by the spring as originally
planned, according to Florida Department of
Transportation (FDOT) spokeswoman Kris
Carson.

Currently, US 41 is two lanes fromTower
Road to Connerton Road in Land O' Lakes, a
distance of about three miles. The construc-
tion is growing that to four lanes while adding
center turning lanes and a grassy median.
Additionally, a concrete sidewalk on the east
side of the highway has already been finished,
according to Carson. Places along the project
include Land O' Lakes High, Connerton
Elementary and Pasco County School
District's administrative office.
The job is managed by FDOT and being
completed by R.E. Purcell Construction.The
project began inAugust 2009 and was needed
to help ease traffic flow from the increasing
population in central Pasco.

Collier Parkway extension

The much delayed Collier Parkway exten-
sion will be finished by the end of February,
according to Pasco County Chief Project
Manager Robert Shepherd.
The project was originally planned for
completion last April, but the original contrac-
tor,WDG Construction, was released from its
contract with Pasco for falling behind sched-
ule. Ripa &Associates took over the job last
September.
The project includes the first two of three
phases to take Collier north to Ehren Cutoff.
The first two portions of the job take the
street from where it stops at Hale Road north
to connect with Parkway Boulevard in Land
O' Lakes, a stretch of 1.8 miles.The last seg-
ment will not happen until 2015 or 2016,
according to program administrator for Pasco
County Engineering Services Deborah Bolduc.
The original contract was for $4.3 million
and about $2.5 million remained when Ripa
took control, according to Shepherd. The proj-

ect is needed to take drivers off of US 41 and
Parkway and onto Collier.

More than half the construction is finished
on the most expensive project in Pasco
County history, the widening of SR 54.
The job was projected to take 21 months,
but is more than half finished through the first
eight months, according to Pasco County
Chief Project Manager Robert Shepherd. He
said the project is still scheduled for comple-
tion March 2012.
"I'd hate to say a date sooner just yet, but
we are way ahead of schedule," Shepherd said.
"We could have a very cold winter or rainy
period and that would slow us down again."
The project costs $105.2 million, but only
$28 million is for construction. The job is
widening SR 54 to six lanes from 1-75 to
Curley Road in Wesley Chapel, a distance of
about 3.2 miles. Pepper Contracting Services
Inc. is doing the construction.
The job also included the temporary clos-
ing of portions of Boyette Road and Curley,
but those intersections with SR 54 are fin-
ished.

Bruce B. Downs widening
MW&.df. - . I IS

The widening project of Bruce B. Downs
Boulevard, also known as either CR 581 or SR

581 depending on the location, is still pro-
gressing on schedule.
Pasco County Chief Project Manager
Robert Shepherd said the new lanes between
SR 56 and just south of SR 54 should open by
the end of JanuaryThat last section to the in-
tersection of SR 54 will then be reduced from
three to one lane to improve the old road,
which will take about four months to finish.
The total length of the road from SR 56 to SR
54 is just less than four miles.
The widening project is being paid for by
a developer, Crown Development, at a cost of
$17 million. Once finished, Bruce B. Downs
will be three lanes from SR 54 to the county
line. The project is needed to keep up with
the growing population ofWesley Chapel.

Light at Mansfield
The intersection of SR 56 and Mansfield
Boulevard inWesley Chapel remains
without a traffic signal months
after the opening of the extension
of the state road.
Both Wiregrass Ranch High
and Dr.John Long Middle are on
Mansfield, and many school buses
and vehicles leaving the schools
each day have to turn across several lanes of
traffic to leave the school since the extension
opened. Parents of students at the schools
have complained to the county commission
to get a light put in at the intersection to
make turning safer, but fixing the problem is
not as easy as it seems.
SR 56 is a six-lane divided road where it
meets with Mansfield; too wide for a tempo-
rary traffic signal strung from wooden or
concrete poles.The metal poles commonly
used at wide crossings were unavailable until
recently, but have been ordered and should
be up and operational by the end ofJanuary.
"We need to get a signal there;" said Pasco
County Commissioner Pat Mulieri."It is dan-
gerous to turn left out of Mansfield. Once we
get the poles it shouldn't take very long to
put in place. We've already got the spots
marked off."

Agriculture industry hopes for abundant year

By Tammy Sue Struble
tstruble@cnewspubs.com

Hans Geissler, founder of Morning Star
Fishermen, an aquaponics training and re-
search center located on 10 acres off Old
Saint Joe Road, lost a lot of fish last year.
Earlier in the year temperatures in the area
took a nose dive and the agriculture indus-
try was literally frozen.

"I'm not going to let it happen" again,
Geissler exclaimed.
Now he has his greenhouse covered
with plastic and has made preventative
measures with more insulation and filling
cracks.
The nonprofit has more than 110,000
gallons of tank space and a solar-heated
greenhouse where tilapia are bred to feed
a variety of plant species.

Healthcare continues to boom in Pasco, north Hillsborough

By Kyle LoJacono
klojacono@cnewspubs.com

While growth in other industries stalled,
healthcare across the region continues to
expand.
In 2010, Lutz saw the opening of the
first new full-service hospital in
Hillsborough County in 30 years. In east
Pasco County, Florida Hospital Zephyrhills
opened a sleep center, while Pasco
Regional Medical Center saw the comple-
tion of its wound center.
This year's development trumps 2010's,
with construction of one new hospital in
Wesley Chapel and the opening of another
in Trinity, the expansion of an emergency
room in Dade City, Florida Medical Clinic's
continued growth in east Pasco and the
opening of new services in Lutz.

Wesley Chapel Medical Center
While it will not open until the end of
2012, the Wesley Chapel Medical Center's
construction illustrates the growth still
present in healthcare in the region.
The facility, which will be located about
one-half mile north of SR 56 on Bruce B.
Downs Boulevard, broke ground Dec. 14. It
will take 18-24 months to build and will be
the first full-service hospital in Wesley

Ihe future Wesley Chapel Medical Center will
be built throughout 2011.

Adventist Health System's (AHS)
Tampa Bay Region.AHS is building
the new hospital.
The project was originally a
joint venture between AHS and
University Community Health, but
the two companies merged last
September. It will open with three
floors and 80 beds, but is built to
easily expand to 300. Harding said
he projects more floors will be
added to make room shortly after Pasco
its opening. agency d
The project comes at a price of
$121 million, according to AHS spokes-
woman Christine Stewart. It will offer
obstetrics, pediatrics, women's and men's
services, general surgery, an emergency de-
partment with helicopter pad, a
comprehensive medical fitness program, or-
thopedics and sports medicine.

Pasco Regional Medical Center
Dade City will see another healthcare
expansion next year when Pasco Regional
Medical Center begins work to double
square footage of its emergency depart-
ment.
Pasco Regional spokeswoman Katie
Bryant said the hospital had planned to
start work on the expansion last year,
but permitting was delayed.A date for
the start of the project is not yet set, but
will likely be either at the end of
January or the start of February.
"It's just part of offering our patients
faster access to care," Bryant said."We've
already have a way for people to check
the wait times at
www.PascoRegionalmc.com to see a
healthcare professional in our emer-
gency department so people can
decide when to get nonurgent treat-
ment. That helps reduce wait times and

obviously having a larger department will
go even farther to cut wait times."
Bryant said the emergency department
at Pasco Regional is currently working at ca-
pacity most of the time. She did not have
exact details because the design can change
during permitting.
Pasco Regional will also renovate its
waiting rooms and main lobby in 2011 after
the emergency department project is start-
ed. The renovation will make those areas
look less like a sterile hospital and more
like a home, including the addition of art-
work and a fresh coat of paint in soft colors
such as mint green.

Florida Medical Clinic
Florida Medical Clinic will see at least
three major additions to its healthcare offer-
ings in Zephyrhills this year - expansions
to its same-day surgery, clinical rheumatol-
ogy and urgent care facilities.
"We need more space to meet the
healthcare needs of our patients in east
Pasco County," said Florida Medical CEO Joe
Delatorre.
Florida Medical's same-day surgery facili-
ty will grow by 12,000 square foot. That
project is set to start in the first half of
2011. The rheumatology facilities will in-

crease by 7,500 square feet, plus a tentative
plan to make a 7,000-square-foot addition to
urgent care.
Additionally, Delatorre said the company
plans to add an 18,000-square-foot addition
to its medical facility in Land O' Lakes at
some point.
"We can't add any more physicians in
Land O' Lakes right now, but the demand
for more healthcare services continues to
grow," Delatorre said."We've got more plans
for the future in Pasco and northern
Hillsborough."

St. Joseph's Hospital-North
Last year, the opening of St. Joseph's
Hospital-North in Lutz was one of the
healthcare highlights, and the new facility is
still making additions.
Besides adding many more doctors, sev-
eral from Florida Medical Clinic, the Lutz
facility just opened its own imaging center
right next door - BayCare Outpatient
Imaging Center, a full-service outpatient im-
aging center. It is located at 4211 Van Dyke
Road in Lutz in front of Kohl's.
"It has already starting seeing patients,"
said hospital spokeswoman Jacqueline
Farruggio."It will cut down on patient diag-
nostic time."
It offers services such as high-field MRI,
multi-slice CT scans, digital mammography,
digital X-rays and bone density scanning, ac-
cording to Farruggio.

Medical Center of Trinity
In the west, the Medical Center of Trinity
is set to open its doors in the fall.
The project, which comes with a $210
million price tag, has been delayed several
times. It was originally planned to be fin-
ished in 2010, but issues with construction
and permitting pushed the opening back.
The new hospital will replace

Port Richey.

Changes in

store for

area schools

By B.C. Manion
bcmanion@cnewspubs.com

Boundary changes are in store for some
Pasco County public schools, while trans-
portation adjustments could affect some
northern Hillsborough County public
schools.
Those are just two of the issues school
boards in those districts will face during
2011.
The Pasco County school district is shift-
ing school boundaries to relieve
overcrowding at Dr.John Long Middle School
and Wiregrass Ranch High. Some of the pro-
posed changes have drawn opposition by
parents. The Pasco School Board is scheduled
to take a final vote on the issue Jan. 18.
The Hillsborough County school district
is preparing to reorganize its transportation
plan forArea 3,which includes Gaither and
Freedom high schools, Buchanan Middle
School, Learning Gate Community Middle
and Elementary schools and Lutz and
Maniscalco elementary schools.

A new building at Land O' Lakes High School will house a culinary arts academy that features three kitchens, commercial equipment, a
theater-style classroom, a demonstration station and other high-tech features. (Photo by Glenn Gefers of www.photosby3g.com)

George Gaffney, general director of the
county's Area 3 schools, said that generally
students who are entitled to public trans-
portation to school will not be affected,
except that some bus stops may be moved
for efficient operations.
If history is any indication, however, the
relocation of any bus stop could become a
source of objections by parents who typical-
ly do not wish to lose a bus stop their child
has been using unless it is a change that will
make the bus stop more convenient for the
child, which usually upsets someone else.
In Pasco County, district employees will
have a new option for some healthcare serv-
ices.
The district is opening three Health
Wellness Clinics, including one at the district
office in Land O' Lakes.

The clinics will offer a number of
healthcare services at no cost to employ-
ees. Use of the clinic is voluntary and
employees will be able to continue to see
their own physicians.
However, any employee enrolled in a dis-
trict health plan can use the clinics to get
free blood work, free women wellness exams
and some free medications as long as they
are prescribed by their doctors and they are
seen by a HealthWellness Clinic physician.
Pasco Superintendent Heather Fiorentino
said the district expects the clinics to lead to
$3 million in district savings.
Pasco also has a $6 million construction
project underway to build the CulinaryArts
Academy at Land O' Lakes High.
The 18,000-square-foot center includes
three kitchens, commercial equipment, a

theater-style classroom, a demonstration
station and other high technology features.
It is expected to open in fall 2011.
Meanwhile, the Hillsborough school dis-
trict will launch a massive renovation at
Gaither High in January. The $17.3 million
makeover, which will take about 18
months to complete, will be done in five
phases.
The school's mechanical systems will be
replaced, which means removing the big
chillers and air handlers. The work also will
require removing the ceiling and lighting.
The school will get a new roof.
The project calls for adding a stairwell
at the front of the building to meet current
safety codes. The restrooms will be updated
to adhere to the requirements of the
Americans with Disabilities Act.

RECOVERY, from page 1
understand, Hagen said."It's a process that's
kind of tedious," he said.
But it goes to the heart of eliminating a
complaint by developers, who frequently
object to getting mired in a bureaucracy.
"I think they've made some real
progress," he said."It makes us more com-
petitive."
Several other initiatives also are under
way in Pasco County.
The PEDC plans to launch a website
soon that will help both new and existing
businesses.The website, which will known
as the Pasco Economic Network, will pull
together the chambers of commerce,
SCORE, the PEDC and other economic de-
velopment groups to help businesses
seeking guidance.
The idea is to have a "virtual" place
where someone can go to open any door
and find someone on the other side that can
help them find the resources they need,
Hagen said.
Another initiative involves work to devel-
op a strategic economic development plan,

John Hagen
an effort being led by Bob Gray, Strategic
Planning Group Inc., a consultant hired by
the county.
Gray predicts that over the next 20-25
years everything in Pasco County will dou-
ble, and the Pasco of the future will more
closely mirror Hillsborough and Pinellas
counties.
Meanwhile, the city of Zephyrhills also
hopes to improve its economic climate in
the coming year. The city is considering an
expansion of its community redevelopment
areas, in an effort to fortify the city's identity
and to entice more businesses to set up
shop near downtown.

Market, new store among additions to Wiregrass mall

By B.C. Manion
bcmanion@cnewspubs.com

The Shops atWiregrass -
a community gathering spot
for area residents - recently
added Fresh Market at
Wiregrass, a farmer's market
offered once a month at the
mall.
If the fresh market seems
reminiscent of the one in
downtown Tampa and in
Seminole Heights, it may be
because it has the same mar-
ket manager as those other
markets.
Those who enjoy fresh
fruits and vegetables will like-

ly enjoy the selection offered
by more than 50 vendors who offer certi-
fied organic, hydroponic and conventional
produce, as well as plants, herbs, flowers,
organic garden food,locally-made jams, jel-
lies, salsa, dips, seasonings, sauces and oils.
The market is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on
the first Saturday of each month.
That's not the only new draw enticing
patrons to drop in during 2011. Charming
Charlie - at 8,586 square feet - is expect-
ed to open in the spring.
The store caters to women who like to
accessorize, or for men who like to please
women who like to accessorize. The stores
are stocked with thousands of items, said
Patty Fadhouli, the chain's marketing direc-

tor. Selections include handbags, hair ac-
cessories, purses, scarves, bracelets,
earrings and other items.
Beyond shopping, there are lots of
other things to do at The Shops at
Wiregrass.A Battle of the Bands is set for
Feb. 19 and the mall has scheduled its first
parade for March 12.
The open-air retail and entertainment
spot is at the corner of Bruce B. Downs
and SR 56 inWesley Chapel. It encompass-
es 642,000 square feet of retail, restaurants
and entertainment. For additional informa-
tion about The Shops at Wiregrass call

State Rep.WillWeatherford (R-Wesley
Chapel) has been named the redistricting
committee chairman.The committee is re-
sponsible for redrawing the boundaries for
the state's legislative and congressional dis-
tricts.
Weatherford was named to the position
by House Speaker-Designate Dean Cannon
(R-Winter Park).
"It's a tremen-
dous honor," said I s oin
Weatherford, who ' go
just won re-elec- very inter
tion for House
District 61. "I'm - Will Weatberfo/
happy Speaker-
Designate Cannon
put his faith in me. It's a long process that
is very complicated, but I'm up for it."
Weatherford said he understands how
important redistricting is to all of Florida's
elections and will make the process some-
thing its citizens can be proud of. Florida
voters this year approved a pair of consti-

tutional amendments that require districts
to be drawn without favoring any particu-
lar candidate or party.
"My goal is to have the most open and
transparent redistricting process ever,"
Weatherford said."We are looking for a lot
of our citizens' input while obviously fol-
lowing the law and constitution."
The redistricting job recently got a lit-
tle more complicated with the release of
U.S. Census numbers that pushed
Florida's U.S. House
seats to 27,the same
Sto be number as NewYork.
The Sunshine State
"active." now how 29 elec-
toral votes.
d Weatherford, who
will become the next
Speaker-Designate at
a ceremony in March, is in the process of
creating a website where people can get
information on the redistricting, give
opinions and even create their own dis-
trict maps.

"It's going to be very inter-
active,"Weatherford said."We
may get some very interesting
looking maps by the end, but
it will allow us to really see
what the people are looking
for and where their concerns
are."
District 61 currently covers
Land O' Lakes, Odessa,Wesley Will W
Chapel, Zephyrhills, Dade City,
SanAntonio and the rest of east
Pasco County along with portions of
northern Hillsborough County.
Every 10 years after the federal census,
the Florida Legislature redraws the state's
legislative and congressional districts.This
redistricting will happen during the 2012
session after two years of hearing public
testimony about the district lines.

'eatherford

"In addition to passing
the budget, redistricting is
the only other constitutional
mandate the members of the
Legislature must pass,"
Cannon said."Representative
Weatherford's hard work
and proven leadership abili-
ties make him a perfect fit
for this important, but very
challenging assignment."

Along with redistricting,
one ofWeatherford's main focuses in the
future is to create an environment for jobs
to come to Florida.
"We're doing a lot of prep work for the
coming months," Weatherford said.
"Creating jobs is going to be the key to
making Florida more prosperous and we'll
be doing everything we can to do that."

Florida colleges full of Pasco, north Hillsborough talent

Local athletes continue
excellence at next level

By Kyle LoJacono
klojacono@cnewspubs.com

Each year, the best prep athletes sign let-
ters of intent to show off their skills in
college and Florida's largest schools are ben-
efiting from the talent of Pasco and north
Hillsborough County high schools.
The Laker and Lutz News checked with
the sports information departments from
the four most populated public colleges in
Florida. Currently, 18 students from Land O'
Lakes, Lutz, Odessa, Wesley Chapel,
Zephyrhills and Dade City are on athletic
teams at Florida State University (FSU), the
University of Central Florida (UCF), the
University of Florida (UF) or University of
South Florida (USF).
Gaither High leads the way with five ath-
letes on teams from the four biggest Florida
institutions, followed by Land O' Lakes with
four and Zephyrhills and Freedom with two
apiece.
Basketball player Kayli Keough, a forward
and guard, knows what it is like to be on
not one, but two teams of major Florida uni-
versities. She graduated from Land O' Lakes
High and started her college career playing
at FSU.
"I was really excited," Keough said of
signing with FSU."It was a great opportuni-
ty. It opens doors to things a lot of people
don't get a chance to do and you get to
meet a lot of new people."
Keough, a junior, moved to UCF this sea-
son and has to sit out the year because of
NCAA transfer rules, but still has two years
of eligibility left with the Knights. She has
yet to take the floor with her new team in a
game, but Keough has already seen the big
differences between high school and col-
lege athletics.
"The speed is the biggest thing," Keough
said. "There isn't time to think in college.
You just have to go and react. High school
has a much more relaxed nature.A lot of the
girls in high school just play basketball for
fun, but in college you have a group of girls
who were all the best players in high school
and are very into the game. Everyone is con-
stantly working to get better."
Keough helped the Gators go 25-4 and

reach the second round of
the playoffs in her senior
year, the 2007-08 season. She
averaged 18.9 points, 8.9 re-
bounds, 3.9 blocks, 3.3 steals
and 1.9 assists per game her
last campaign in high school.
"I loved it," Keough said
of playing at Land O' Lakes."I
have a lot of close friends
from playing there. ... You
want to go out and represent
your town well in college.
I'm still really close with a
lot of my teammates from
Land O' Lakes and you want
to show that we know how
to play ball."
Moving to the gridiron of
the football field,Tyler Guy
also has experience at two
schools, but on the high
school level. He played foot-
ball at Zephyrhills High for
three years before transfer-
ring to Freedom High for his
senior year.
Guy, a high school quar-
terback, helped lead the
Patriots to a program record
seven wins in 2009 and
reach its second playoff ap-
pearance ever. He had 1,640
passing yards and 11 touch-
downs and added another

"I loved playing high school football,"
Guy said."Moving to Freedom was one of
the best decisions I've ever made. I loved
playing there."
Guy, who is the older brother of current
Pasco High quarterback Jacob Guy, took a
redshirt year this season after walking on at
USE He has switched to tight end and
worked on the Bulls practice squad a lot
this season.
The Patriots ran a version of the spread
offense during Guy's senior season. The
Bulls also use a spread system, which was
one of the reasons Guy picked USE

Making the pros
While many area kids have managed to
sign on with Florida's biggest schools, a few
have made it even a step farther. The most

tenured professional athlete is Kevin Cash,
who graduated from Gaither High. The
catcher went on to FSU and then signed
with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1999 as a rook-
ie free agent.
Cash, who is currently a member of the
Texas Rangers, has played eight MLB sea-
sons as a member of six organizations. He
has a .183 career batting average, 38 RBI and
eight home runs in 246 MLB games.
Also from Gaither, Carlton Mitchell was a
wide receiver with the Cowboys and then
played at the University of South Florida
(USF) from 2007-2009 after redshirting in
2006. He had 105 catches for 1,648 yards in
three seasons as a Bull, including nine touch-
downs. He also set the USF record for
receiving yards in a season with 706 in
2009.
Mitchell was drafted by the Cleveland
Browns in the sixth round in 2010 and
made the club's final roster this season. He

has no catches and only
one rush attempt for
nine yards through the
Browns first 14 games,
but is still in the NFL.
A new professional is
former Pasco High stu-
dent Dominic Brown, an
outfielder. He was called
up by the Philadelphia
Phillies halfway through
last season and batted
.210 in 62 at bats with
13 RBI, eight runs
scored and a pair of
steals and homers.
Staying on the base-
ball field, Zephyrhills
graduate Geoff Parker
played at Florida State
University the last three
seasons, helping the
Seminoles reach two
College World Series
(CWS) tournaments. He
went 4-1 with three
saves while posting a
4.69 earned run average
in 32 appearances, 10 of
them starts, his junior
season in Tallahassee.
Parker signed with
the Colorado Rockies
last August after being

drafted. He will likely spend the 2011 sea-
son rehabbing from Tommy John surgery he
had last September after tearing an elbow
ligament pitching in the CWS.
Also representing east Pasco in the pros
is 10-year NFL veteran defensive lineman
Ryan Pickett. He graduated from Zephyrhills
and was a first-round draft pick by the St.
Louis Rams in 2001, playing in the Super
Bowl as a rookie. He has spent the last five
years with the Green Bay Packers. During
his NFL playing career, he has compiled 447
tackles and 9.5 sacks.
NASCAR racer David Reutimann also
graduated from Zephyrhills and is amazed at
the number of east Pasco County people in
professional athletics.
"I didn't know about all those guys. I
guess that shows the whole country where
the best athletes are from," Reutimann with
a laugh."We can really churn out those stud
players out in east Pasco."

Steinbrenner wide receiver Tobi Antigha has
the football program's first scholarship offer.
Warriors football's first offer
Steinbrenner High senior wide receiver
Tobi Antigha was offered the first scholarship
for the Warriors football program Dec. 19 -
a full-ride from Presbyterian College in South
Carolina.
"It's really exciting," said Steinbrenner
coach Floyd Graham. "The school has had
other kids get scholarships for athletics, but
this is our first. I think I was more excited than
he was when he told me."
Antigha helped lead Steinbrenner to a 5-5
record in the school's second year in 2010.
Presbyterian went 2-9 last season. The college
is interested in the 6-foot-2Antigha because
of his height and sure hands.

Weatherford will not attend USF
Land O' Lakes High senior Stephen
Weatherford is no longer committed to play
at the University of South Florida (USF).The
senior made the decision Dec. 22.
Weatherford picked USF last July, but also had
offers from other Division I schools, including
Boston College.
Weatherford's 30 passing touchdowns last
season was tied for third most of any quarter-
back in Florida despite missing the Gators last
two games for undisclosed reasons. He added
a team-high 476 rushing yards and eight
touchdowns on 62 carries. For his accomplish-
ments, he was named the All-Laker/All-Lutz
News Offensive Player of theYear.

Harrell picksWake Forest
Jesuit High senior linebacker Anthony
Harrell, of Lutz, verbally committed toWake
Forest University.
Jesuit head coach James Harrell,Anthony's
father, said his son picked Wake Forest because
the defense there is similar to what he has
been in his whole life.Anthony led theTigers
with 98 tackles last season.James added the
Demon Deacons have a strong academic repu-
tation, which factored into the decision.
Anthony had more than 20 offers from

Division I schools, including the University of
Connecticut,Vanderbilt University and Atlantic
Coast Conference rival North Carolina State
University.

Tampa Bay Inferno tryouts
Wesley Chapel resident Harold Givens is
organizing open tryouts for the Tampa Bay
Inferno, a travel basketball club. Boys and girls
interested in the competitive program from
around Tampa Bay in sixth through I Ith grade
should go to the Central CityYMCA, I 10 East
Oak Ave. in Tampa for the tryout. The girls
workout is from 2-3:30 p.m., and the boys is
from 3:30-5 p.m. Games will start in March
and go through July with practices in Land O'
Lakes."We're looking for young players pas-
sionate about basketball," Givens said. For
more information, call (813) 997-9933.

Middle school tennis team
Dean Colosimo is having open registration
until Jan. 13 for his Jr.Team Tennis league for
middle school students from Academy at the

Tentative new districts to reshape area football

By Kyle LoJacono
klojacono@cnewspubs.com

The Florida High School Athletic
Association (FHSAA) has released preliminary
new football districts for the next two sea-
sons.
The FHSAA redistricts all prep sports
every two years to account for new schools
opening and changing population. Seth
Polansky, FHSAA spokesman, said schools
with a similar amount of students are
grouped together by location.
"It isn't very fair for a school with 2,500
kids to play against one with 50," Polansky
said."Also, this year we've added a classifica-
tion for rural schools to level the playing field.
Instead of the old classes, now it's 1A through
8A.There isn't a 1B or 2B anymore to simplify
the numbering."
The larger the number of the class, the
more students at the school. In Pasco and
north Hillsborough counties, the new align-
ments if upheld will in some cases keep
traditional rivalries, split others up and create
new ones.
One of the biggest changes from the redis-
tricting would be the splitting up of Pasco's
longest running rivalry - the 9-Mile War be-
tween Zephyrhills and Pasco. Despite both
being in Class 5A, Zephyrhills has been
grouped with three Polk County schools in
District 9. Pasco is in 5A-6 with Wesley
Chapel.
"I did submit a letter for appeal," said
Zephyrhills principal Steve Van Gorden."We
asked to be moved into 5A-6 as our first
choice with Pasco andWesley Chapel and the
other county schools, or into 6A-6 as our sec-
ond choice. We've played Pasco for a long
time and it's a very important match-up for
our community here."
Zephyrhills and Pasco have played each
other 53 times.Van Gorden also said the travel

Steinbrenner defensive back Tyler McClain
sends Gaither quarterback Shug Oyegunle
flying last year. When the two teams play this
season, it will likely be as a district match-up.

for road district games would be another bur-
den that would be alleviated if the Bulldogs
were put in 5A-6.
Polansky said all appeals have been sub-
mitted and will be addressed in the coming
weeks. Finalized districts will be released the
last week of January
Central Pasco rivals Sunlake and Land O'
Lakes will remain district opponents in 6A-6.
The two squads were also in 3A-7 last year
with Mitchell, who will move into the new dis-
trict with River Ridge, Central and Springstead.
The Gators reached the playoffs last sea-
son as the district runner-up, the 14th straight
appearance for the program. The Seahawks
finished 8-2 and just missed out on a postsea-
son berth after losing to Land O' Lakes.
The Seahawks and Gators will likely have
an easier time making the regional tournament
in the new district alignment as Pasco, which
as four straight district championships includ-
ing 3A-7 last year, is now in 5A.Additionally, the
only other new 6A-6 school to make the post-
season last year was Springstead as the district
runner-up with a 5-5 record.
Moving to the new 7A-7,four area schools
have been grouped together - Freedom,

Gaither, Steinbrenner andWiregrass Ranch.
The Patriots and Cowboys were in the
same district last year, but this alignment
moves fellow north Hillsborough newcomer
Ntcinlrcil[cr with them.
"It's nice to be moving up," said Warriors
coach Floyd Graham. "That 2A district we
were in with Jesuit and Robinson was a tough
one.We think we'll be able to compete in the
new district."
Jesuit finished 10-0 in the regular season
last year, while Robinson was 8-2.
Gaither and Steinbrenner played last year, a
20-7 win for the Cowboys, and Graham said
the two programs wanted to continue to play
even before learning they would be district ri-
vals. He did say his team still wants to play
Strawberry Crest, which had been a district
opponent the last two years.
"I don't really know why, but that's the team
we think of as our main rival," Graham said.
"Maybe it's because we started the same time
two years ago, maybe because that was the first
game we played, maybe it's because we played
them two times that first year. I don't know, but
we want to keep playing them.
Wiregrass is the only Pasco school in the
tentative 7A-7, but that does not phase the
Bulls.
"My philosophy is we'll play anyone," said
Wiregrass Ranch coach Jeremy Shobe."We'll
prepare for anyone on our schedule."
Carrollwood Day has also joined a district
for the first time in school history. Last year it
was an independent, but will move into 2A-5.
Patriots coach Lane McLaughlin said the team
wanted to move into a district to have a
chance and an FHSAA state championship.
Six-man football teams like Academy at the
Lakes and Zephyrhills Christian play in a
league not affiliated with FHSAA, so redistrict-
ing does not affect those programs.
All the new districts can be viewed at

Gardening

through

the year

By B.J. Jarvis
Pasco Extension Director
When you have a few minutes to spend
in the garden, it helps to be prepared with
a month-by-month calendar of gardening
to-dos. Here are a few tips to make 2011 a
little more organized.

JANUARY: Cold protection is critical
for plants not well suited to our occasional
freezes.Apply horticultural oil while plants
are dormant that have insect problems.
Adjust irrigation to run no more than
every other week.Too much water while
plants are dormant can be harmful.
FEBRUARY: Start warm season vegeta-
bles like tomatoes, peppers and melons
indoors this month, giving you a head start
on March planting. While grass is dormant,
give the mower a general overhaul.
Especially sharpen blades for a healthy cut.
Prune azaleas as soon as they finish bloom-
ing to avoid cutting off next year's
blossoms.
MARCH: As plants start to grow, con-
trol weeds before they control the garden.
Reapply mulch to maintain a two to three-
inch layer. With warmer weather, grass
should be cut at 3.5 to four inches for
Bahia and St. Augustine. Watch for hum-
mingbird activity this month.
APRIL: Patience is a virtue and finally
it's time to prune. Winter weary plants
should be showing signs of life. Prune
back to living tissue.Watch for oleander
caterpillars and treat with Bt or remove
and destroy.
MAY: Lawn grasses often need fertilizer
during fast growing periods. Use a turf fer-
tilizer with 50 percent nitrogen in a
slow-release form. Mow no more than 1/3
of grass blade off at a time for optimal
health. Keep blades sharp.
JUNE: Black spot is a fungus that is
prevalent in hot, rainy weather. With the

onset of the summer rainy season, a week-
ly fungicide spray on hybrid tea roses may
be necessary.
JULY: Watch for black coating on plant
leaves of crape myrtle, gardenia, citrus and
other plants. This is a sign that insects are
over the darkened leaves. Insecticide, not a
fungicide,is the key to controlling.
AUGUST: Insects of all sorts thrive in
the heat of summer. Practice integrated
pest management by regularly scouting
plants for caterpillars, grasshoppers, scale
and other pests that may be munching on
garden plants.
SEPTEMBER: Month's end is the last
chance to fertilize and prune before allow-
ing plants to go dormant for the winter.
OCTOBER: Dig and divide perennials,
such as amaryllis, daylily and ornamental
grasses that have gotten compacted. Plant
strawberries for December through March
munching.
NOVEMBER: Halloween is a good time
to start a cool-season vegetable garden.
Lettuce, spinach, sugar snap peas and broc-
coli work best.
DECEMBER: Christmas trees need to
be kept wet so needles don't drop and
trees won't become a fire hazard.
Poinsettia, pansies, calendula and other col-
orful plants brighten the garden and prefer
the cooler temperatures.

New Year

provides another

chance to begin anew

By Samantha Taylor
Owner, Pure Health Studios
Here we are in 2011 - and doesn't it
seem like it was just the new millennium?
And now, another 11 years. Are you still
struggling with some of the same things
you said you wanted to overcome then? I
am, too.
One of the categories is honestly trying
to keep my closet free of clothes on the
ground. But there are some things I have
overcome and below are some tips for how
to make your goals happen in 2011.
I learned these from personal experi-
ence and from coaching thousands of
people to success with their health. The
first four are the most critical, so if you
want to keep it simple and just focus on
those, it will help you.
Be clear on what you want - to start
on a goal you need to know exactly what
you want. Don't be vague, be very clear.
If your goal is weight loss, get specific.
Don't just say, "I want to lose weight."
Instead, say "I want to lose 30 pounds by
March 31."

1 . Make a decision that the outcome
of the goal is important to you.You need to
have purpose behind that goal to drive you
and propel you when things get challeng-
ing.

2. Write them down. I know, I know.
This seems cliche, but there is some kind of
power in writing it down when you take it
from your mind and put it to ink on paper.

3 . Look at them daily. What good is it
if you write it down but don't look at it? I
don't know how many goal-setting work-
shops I went to, only to find the goals I had
written down in a drawer a year later. I real-
ized then that I was no closer to
accomplishing those priorities because I
keep them in front of me.

mycoastinsurance.com
quickquote@mycoastinsurance.com

4. Break them down into more man-
ageable goals. Having short-term and
long-term goals helps. If you have 100
pounds to lose, start with a long-term goal
of 100 pounds and a short-term goal of los-
ing the first 10 pounds.

5. Set a dc.idllnc It helps to have a
dc.dlluic of when you want to accomplish
something. Make sure you are realistic so
that you do not set yourself up for failure.

. Track your progress. You need to
know if what you are doing is working so
you can change it if it's not.

. Adjust your method if it's not work-
ing. If you notice you are not progressing,
you need to change your method. Why
keep doing something if it's not working?

O. Have accountability.This can be a
huge part of success. Some of the greatest
accomplishments I have had in life are
when I had accountability. Make sure it's
someone that is not going to just let you off
the hook and say,"Awe, forget it, let's go pig
out at the movies!"

S. Focus on the positive, believing
you can do it.You need to have a positive
attitude about your ability to accomplish
the goal. A negative, defeatist attitude can
propel you to not succeed. Believe in your-
self and focus.

1 O. Celebrate your success; reward
yourself. This is the fun part. Set a reward
for yourself when you accomplish your
goals. Have mini rewards for your short-
term goals and big rewards for your
long-term goals. When you lose the first
10 pounds, reward yourself with a massage,
facial or golfing - whatever you would
normally put off for a special occasion.

1 1 . When you actually apply these
tips, you will see results, possibly more than
you ever have before. Then
when 2012 comes, you
won't be looking at the
same obstacles in life but
can conquer new ones.
You can look in the
mirror and say "Oh
YES, I did it!"

Did instant coffee kill coffee?
New technologies change many things. But not
everything. You may tweet, blog, surf, shop, or search
online but you continue to readyour free community
paper. Youjust provedit.
Readership of free community papers is now higher
than paid daily papers, and continues to grow. Rather
than being replaced by "instant" media, your local free
community paper has become an important part of our
neighborhood.
The reason, which sometimes is not heard because of
all the noise about the Internet, is pretty obvious: your
free community paper does what the Internet doesn't.
We promote connections at a locallevel. Free papersjoin
readers and advertisers in ways digital media doesn't.
In fact, the local content and power of your free paper
makes advertising even more effective. We are the number
one medium for driving purchases. That's important in
every product category.
Including coffee.
