Walk 'pumps' mammogram funding

Heroes 'N Heels needs a few
good men to fight breast cancer
By Kyle LoJacono
klojacono@cnewspubs.com
Without a mammogram, Vivian Noland
probably would not be alive today.
"In December of 2009,1 noticed that my
right breast had some redness, so I decided
to go for a mammogram," Noland said."The
mammogram report informed me that I
needed to have a biopsy. I had no insurance
and didn't know what I was going to do.A
dear friend told me about the Breast Care
Center at (University Community Hospital),
and I went there not knowing what was
going to happen."
When she got to University Community
Hospital (UCH) she met breast center clini-
cal navigator TheresaWinsey
"She was embarrassed because she
couldn't pay for her treatment," saidWinsey
of Lutz."With the economy being the way it
is and people losing their jobs, we're finding
more and more people without insurance.
That's why Heroes 'N Heels is so important
to us because we don't want to tell people
we can't help them."
The event started three years ago and
has raised nearly $150,000 to give free mam-
mograms to women without health
insurance, according to UCH spokesman
Will Darnall. He said every $100 raised by is
another free manunmogram.

dent of ancillary services Jeff Oskin, UCH director of risk management George Foley and

Winsey said other services also are provid-
ed with the money for those women. She said
neither she nor anyone in her family has had
the disease, but she faces it on a daily basis.

Foreclosures hit Pasco County hardest in bay area

By B.C. Manion
bcmanion@cnewspubs.com

Lake Front Drive,in the Pine Ridge subdi-
vision of Wesley Chapel, offers a microcosm
of what's happening in today's local housing
market.
There's a house in foreclosure that's up
for sale, and another being sold in a short
sale. There's a for sale sign stuck in the lawn
in front of one house and a for lease sign
planted in front of another.
In neighborhoods scattered throughout
Pasco County, the story is much the same.
There are houses being offered for sale or
for rent. And overgrown weeds in front of
houses - on blocks of otherwise neatly
manicured lawns - announce that whoev-
er once lived there no longer does.
RealtyTrac, a California-based company
that tracks foreclosures recently reported
that Pasco had a 60 percent increase in fore-
closures, compared with August 2009.The
number of foreclosures increased from July
to August of this year by 43 percent, accord-
ing to company figures.
By comparison, Hillsborough County
fared better - with a 30 percent increase in
foreclosures inAugust, compared to the pre-
vious year's figure for that month, and an
increase of less than 9 percent from July to
August.
In actual figures, Hillsborough had one
foreclosure in every 171 homes, while Pasco
had one in every 136. Florida had one in
every 155, a rate of 2.5 times the national av-
erage, according to RealtyTrac.
RealtyTrac's report incorporates docu-
ments filed during all three phases of
foreclosure, default notices, scheduled auc-
tions and bank repossessions.
Local real estate agents said there are a
lot of dynamics at play in the rising foreclo-
sure rates.
"It's complicated," said Carl Stratton, of
Dennis Realty & Investment, 1022 Land 0'

story of today's housing market. (Photos

Lakes Blvd. in Lutz.
"We have people from all around the
country who bought here," Stratton said, but
many of those investors are letting the hous-
es go through strategic foreclosures.
"In this market, it has become almost
common place that people aren't paying,"
Stratton said.
Russell Adams, of Russell Adams Realty,
2502 Land O' Lakes Blvd.,in Land O' Lakes,
has noticed the same trend.
"These are people who have the ability
to pay. It's a business decision,"Adams said.
"It's going to mess up their credit for
awhile," he said, but that doesn't seem to
bother them.
Unemployment is also playing a role,

Overgrown weeds may be a telltale sign that the owner of a home no longer lives there.

Stratton said. Families with two wage earn-
ers may be down to one, or none - making
it impossible for them to meet their previ-
ous mortgage payments.
Tougher credit requirements are also
making it harder for people to get into the
market, Stratton said.
While the economy continues to strug-
gle, Stratton said his office has seen sales
improving slowly.
Both he and Adams think it is an excel-
lent time to invest.
"The best time to buy real estate is right
now - this very second,"Adams said.The
price of real estate and excellent interest
rates make for great deals, he said.
"The interest rates are at historical lows.

In the 4s. It's phenomenal. It's unspeakable,"
Adams said. He also noted that the quality of
home construction is better than it has ever
been because of strict hurricane standards.
Both Stratton and Adams said the de-
mand for rental housing is hot.
Home ownership is decreasing and
rental demand is up, Stratton said. Part of the
demand is because poverty - at its highest
rate since 1994 - qualifies more people for
government subsidized housing, he said.
Adams said that people are wary about
the real estate market, but said that prices
are stable to improving, based on the multi-
ple listing services for 2008.Adams predicts
there will be even more improvement after
the November election.

Mobility forum projects

a more connected region

Tampa mayor urges passage
of transportation tax

By Molly McGowan
Laker Correspondent

A mobility forum last week at Wharton
High began with the ironic announcement
that Tampa Mayor Pam lorio would show up
late because she was stuck in traffic .When
she did arrive, however, Iorio referenced her
experience as a perfect example of the im-
portance of establishing proposed
transportation improvements for the region.
She reminded the public that an upcom-
ing referendum that would help fund these
plans - a 1 percent addition to the current
sales tax - will be on the ballot Nov. 2, and
to consider the fact that the Tampa Bay area
is playing catch-up to other metropolitan re-
gions.
Though the vote only involves
Hillsborough County, Iorio said that Pasco
and Pinellas counties will be looking to
Hillsborough to see how the plans play out,
and may eventually have the chance to vote
on similar referendums.
lorio cited Charlotte, N.C.; Phoenix,Ariz.;
and Atlanta, Ga. as similar regions that had
successfully used sales tax referenda to im-
prove and create bus and light rail systems,
and said that following suit is important for
Tampa and surrounding areas.
"This is the issue of the 21st century for
our community," Ilorio said. She said Tampa is
a sprawling, successful metropolitan area,
"but the one thing we don't have is an invest-
ment in a modern transportation system."
The overall 2035 Regional Long Range
Transportation Plan, as it is collectively re-
ferred to, would not only establish light rail
connecting the University of South Florida

(USF), downtown Tampa, New Tampa, the
Westshore area and Brandon, but would also
work with the Aviation Authority to provide
rails that led directly into the Tampa
International Airport for the ease of airport
personnel and passengers.
Existing bus systems would also be im-
proved. Instead of buses that ran once every
hour, the system would be expanded to
buses arriving at stops every 10-15 minutes,
with express bus systems running in man-
aged lanes solely for the express buses, as
well as in mixed traffic.
For an hour before the Sept. 22 meeting,
information displays were set up by the plan-
ning partners, where the public could assess
visuals of the future plans and ask questions
of the representatives.The planning partners
consisted of the Tampa Bay Area Regional
Transportation Authority (TBARTA), the
Federal Department of Transportation
(FDOT), the Hillsborough Area Regional
Transit Authority (HART) and Hillsborough
and Pasco counties Metropolitan Planning
Organizations (MPOs).
The TBARTA projects most likely to af-
fect the Pasco area are plans for a short
distance light rail from USF to Wesley
Chapel and an express bus service in mixed
traffic and managed lanes along the SR
54/SR 56 corridor from New Port Richey to
Wesley Chapel.
The FDOT's plan for widening 1-275
from four lanes to six, from north of
Livingston Avenue to CR 54, easing conges-
tion in the Pasco area, would begin
construction in the spring of 2011. In addi-
tion to the interstate's widening, the apex
where 1-275 and 1-75 intersect is already
under construction to help eliminate weav-
ing caused by struggles to merge lanes. In
regards to these specific improvements,
Interstate Program Manager Adam Perez

said,"It's definitely going to ease congestion
- that's for sure."
Pasco County Commissioner Pat Mulieri
commented that the current widening of SR
54 would favorably impact the Pasco area.
Mulieri explained that the idea behind the
Pasco MPO plans is"connecting density and
growth with multi-modal transportation,"
creating an urban service area.
"We had a few hiccups along the way,"
Mulieri said, but the additions to SR 54 are
successfully underway.
At the end of the meetings the floor was
open to the public so they could ask ques-
tions of the representatives assembled.
Several people stepped up to the micro-

phone to speak, representing mostly the
Tampa and Hillsborough areas, and making
statements about the projected transporta-
tion plans, rather than asking questions.
Regardless of the fact that not one per-
son actually asked a question, both sides of
the issue were represented, with some in
full support of the plans and others ex-
tremely wary of the 1 percent tax increase
and the fact that the improvements would
take so long to complete. The final determi-
nation of whether the tax increase and
transportation plans will pass depends on
citizens of Hillsborough County, who will
cast their votes on Nov. 2, either for or
against the referendum.

HALO Academy provides hope for special needs students

By B.C. Manion
bcmanion@cnewspubs.com

Christy Raile didn't like the educational
options available for her 3-year-old son,
Austin: He could either go to the Florida
School for the Deaf & the Blind in St.
Augustine for five days a week or he could
ride a school bus two hours each way for
special education.
Neither seemed like a good idea to her.
Sending her 3-year-old away was not
going to happen, and Raile was not willing
to force him to ride 20 hours a week, either.
"They're these little teeny-tiny kids and

they're strapped into these harnesses.As a
parent you just think, there's got to be some-
thing better," Raile said.
So, she set about finding out what it
would take to set up her own school, and
after 3 1/2 years, HALOAcademy, at 15102
Amberly Drive at Grace Episcopal Church,
opened its doors this fall. The nonprofit
school's acronym stands for Hope,Achieve,
Learn, Overcome.
So far, the school, which is for children
with special needs as well as typical chil-
dren, has just three students. Two of them
are Raile's children, Austin, who is now 6
and has a hearing impairment and global
dyspraxia; and Aubrey, 5, who is a typical
child.
The other student is 5-year-old Hailey
Ferrara, of Wesley Chapel, who has chiari
malformation type one and apraxia. The lit-
tle girl is speech delayed and needs
occupational, speech and physical therapy..
The three children are taught by Jessie
Wamsley, a teacher who is certified in deaf
education and special education.
Raile said she has a waiting list of nine 3-
and 4-year-old children for pre-school.
She hadn't planned to open a pre-school,
but those are the students who showed up.
So, she plans to meet those needs, but first she
must meet some requirements of her own.
She hopes to open the pre-school
around December. She's already lined up the
teacher.
Raile said she wants her school to in-
clude children of different ability levels
because she thinks it benefits all children.

Children with special needs get to see
other children doing things that may inspire
them to want to try, while typical children
are given an opportunity to develop a deep-
er sense of compassion, she said.
"My heart breaks for the little Haileys of
the world, the little Austins, who are put into
a secluded classroom and all they get is
other children that are just like themselves.
They need to see that component of typical
kids.
"It goes both ways. I have two typical
girls (her daughters) who are better chil-
dren and better people because they have a
little brother like they do. It brings a loving,
nurturing spirit to that typical child that you
just don't get.
"They learn an aspect of humanity that

you really don't get anywhere else," Raile
said.
Parents of special needs kids are looking
for a place where their child's needs can be
met, Raile said.
"Every parent who has a child who has a
need like that - they don't feel like their
child is cared for, loved or understood.
"I want the moms to come in here and
to be able to talk to me.A lot of these chil-
dren have medical issues that teachers just
don't understand.
"There are reasons that our children are
behaving and acting like they do. But unfor-
tunately, the pediatricians and the
neurologists and the geneticists don't talk to
the school system. I would love to bridge

that gap," said Raile, who has a medical back-
ground as a nurse anesthetist.
She understands what the parents are
going through. "I can fill in their sentences."
"I've had more parents cry at my table in
the last four weeks, just because somebody
gets it," Raile said.
Jasmine Ferrara, of Wesley Chapel, is one
of those parents who tears up at the
thought of her child's difficulties.
The little girl had begun classes in public
school, but Ferrara said,"deep down, I knew
it was not the right place for her."
Hailey was riding the bus 45 minutes
each way, and when she got home, she
would lash out at anyone within striking dis-
tance.
"She was absolutely miserable being
strapped for 45 minutes at a time," Ferrara
said.
When the little girl arrived home, she
would hit, punch, kick, bite and scratch.
"And now, I have none of that,"Jasmine
Ferrara said."She was mad. She didn't know
how to express it."
Even in just a short time, the school has
made a difference, said the youngster's

grandmother, Deb Natale. "She's back to
being little Hailey again."
"We're making sure she gets that sign lan-
guage component, so she has an outlet,"
Raile said. "Children who can't communi-
cate are frustrated."
Tuition at HALO Academy is $8,000 a
year, but the school meets the requirements
for its special needs students to qualify for a
McKay Scholarship from the state.
Typical children who attend the school
can qualify for anAmbassador Scholarship,
which results in a tuition of $500 a month
for them.
Raile said parents need to feel like there
is hope for their children.
"If a parent gives up hope, then the child
has no chance. We don't know what our
children are capable of. So, we have to pres-
ent and make it available to them," Raile said.
The school is very small at the moment,
but Raile has big dreams.
"What would I like? I would like our
own facility and I would like to start from
six weeks all of the way up to 12th grade."

Students have new tool

to make campus safer

By B.C. Manion
bcmanion@cnewspubs.com

When students hear a rumor about a
weapon on campus, or know that there are
bullies running wild - they may want to tell
someone, but may be afraid of potential con-
sequences.
Now, there's a new tool in Pasco
County's public schools that aims to help
school officials and law enforcement pre-
vent and prosecute crime on school
campuses.
Pasco County Sheriff Bob White and
Pasco schools Superintendent Heather
Fiorentino announced the Campus Crime
Stoppers program at a joint news confer-
ence last week.
The initiative, which began the first day
of school, gives students three ways to
anonymously report criminal activity or a
suspect, by calling a 24-hour, toll-free hot-
line, by going to a website, or by texting it
in.
The student provides the name and loca-
tion of the school, along with a description
of the criminal activity or the suspect and
the program's coordinator pass-
es that information along to the
school resource officer.
Like the traditional crime To sha
stopper program, rewards are Campu
provided for tips that lead to ar- Web tip
rests. Text tip
At the time of the news con-

ference, the district had already received 15
anonymous tips, said Summer Romagnoli,
school district spokeswoman.
"We're hoping it will give our students
peace of mind in knowing they can report
crimes and bullying without any fear of ret-
ribution and retaliation," Romagnoli said.
Besides, students are an excellent source
of information, she added.
"Nobody knows what's going on in their
peer group better than the students them-
selves," Romagnoli said."We want to involve
them (students) in keeping our campuses
safe."
In addition to the news conference, the
district held a poster contest to bring atten-
tion to the program and it printed
information about it on the back page of a
planner it gives to each student to help plan
the year ahead, Romagnoli said.
More than 400 entries were received in
the poster contest. The winners - created by
Rebecca Baer of Zephyrhills High School,
Frances Calderin of Rushe Middle School
and Savannah Hall of Wesley Chapel
Elementary School - now grace walls in
schools throughout the district.

Lutz Market returns Saturday

By Kyle LoJacono
klojacono@cnewspubs.com

Market in the Park was an annual sta-
ple at Bullard Park in Lutz for more than a
decade and the community tradition is re-
turning as Market at the Old Lutz School
on Saturday, Oct. 2.
The GFWC Lutz-Land 0' Lakes
Woman's Club puts on the event, which
started 10 to 12 years ago, according to
event co-chairwomen and club member
Phyllis Hoedt. The event was canceled last
year because of the fees that were imposed
by the Hillsborough County Parks,
Recreation and Conservation Department to
use department property like Bullard Park.
"It was always a good time and I'm
happy we can bring it back," said Christy
Rogers, the club's second vice president.
"We have room for 75 vendors and hopeful-
ly we have a full house."
The event is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on
Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Old Lutz School.
Parking is free.
Some of the things that will be sold at
the market are jewelry, crafts, produce, an-
tiques and other flea market items. The
women's club will also sell hot dogs and
desserts. Those interested in being a vendor,
which costs $20 per booth, should call
(813) 948-2090 or (813) 949-1937 by Friday,
Oct. 1.
"We wanted to bring the event back to
raise some money for good causes," said cur-
rent club president Edwina Kraemer.
"Money raised from selling vendor spots
will go to the club and then to more than
200 groups like the Boy Scouts and Girls

Scouts, veterans groups, Moffitt Center and
others. The money from food we sell will go
to the Old Lutz School."
Rogers said the vendors get to keep all
the money from selling their products. She
added that the money raised for the old
school will probably go to replacing the
windows in the building.
Sandy Sumner, who has lived in Lutz for
11 years, sold Avon products at three of the
markets when it was still at the park and is
pleased the event has returned.
"It's a great event to have," Sumner said.
"There are so many things going on with a
lot of people coming out and having a good
time. I do some business in Land O' Lakes
and a lot of the people from up there I
know used to always come out, so it's more
than just a Lutz event."
Besides Avon makeup and skincare prod-
ucts, Sumner will be selling shirts and
purses.
The women's club will not just be selling
food. They will be selling their cookbook
with all types of recipes.
"You can put your finger in any page and
find something great," Kraemer said."We'll
have samples of some of the
desserts for people to try at
the market."
In addition, some of the
money raised by the women's
club will go to Glenda Wilson's
campaign for Honorary Mayor
for the Central Pasco Chamber
of Commerce.
Kraemer is very happy
with bringing back the Lutz
.... 1, 'tradition after its one-year
-..-.:' hideous mainly because it can
' : help bring the community to-
gether.
"Hopefully people will
come out and have a good
time with their neighbors,"
Kraemer said."You'll be able to
find something nice for your-
b president self and your friends and
nt Edwina family while helping the Old
Lutz School."

Fresco Pizza dishes fresh pies in Pasco

By Shannon Edinger
Laker Correspondent

A popular Wesley Chapel pizza place re-
cently branched out with a similar location
in Lutz.
Fresco Pizza, located at 18853 SR 54 in
Lutz, is an extension of Wesley Chapel's
Pizza Mania, located at 1734 Bruce B. Downs
Blvd., a family-owned business that has been
open for eight years.
Due to the restaurant's success, owner
Anthony Parascandola and his uncle/co-
owner, Lenny Schiano, opened Fresco Pizza to
serve two pizza-hungry areas of Pasco County.
The family moved from Naples, Italy to
New Jersey, then to Florida eight years ago.
Parascandola's father, Ray, has been in the
business for 45 years now, and some of the
recipes date back 56 years.
Fresco Pizza and Pizza Mania share the
same menu. The pizzas are hand-tossed
with fresh ingredients including mozzarella,
ricotta, pepperoni, sausage, bacon, spinach,
garlic, basil, mushrooms, onions, and pep-
pers. Gourmet pizzas such as the pizza
Italiana and the meat lovers are two cus-
tomer favorites. The pizza Italiana is a white
pizza with spinach, tomatoes, and fresh gar-
lic that show off the colors of the Italian
flag. Its crispy crust and fresh toppings
make it a top choice. The meat lovers pizza
has pepperoni, sausage, bacon and extra
cheese piled high atop the crispy crust,

One of Pizza Mania's more popular pies is
topped with pepperoni and meatballs.

Steve Cleary, a transplant from Long Island
and now a Wesley Chapel resident, twirls a

order. (Photos by Glenn Gefers of

making it another customer favorite.
"We have a unique pizza at Fresco Pizza
called grandma's pizza," Schiano says. "It's an
upside down pizza with the cheese on the
bottom and fresh tomatoes and onions on
top."
Schiano says some other popular menu
items are the antipasto mania salad and the
chicken Napoli sandwich. The antipasto
mania salad contains crispy green lettuce,
auricchio cheese, salami, black and green
olives, artichoke hearts and sundried toma-
toes. The chicken Napoli sandwich has
grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato, balsamic
vinaigrette, and fresh mozzarella.
Menu items range in price from about
$2.75 to $20.95. Schiano says Fresco Pizza is
busiest on Friday nights. "About 90 percent
of our customers are regulars," Schiano says.
"Creating pizzas and pleasing customers is
what I love most about working here."
Fresco Pizza does not serve alcohol or
deliver orders, but does cater events. Fresco
Pizza is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Tuesday through Saturdays, and noon to 9
p.m. on Sundays.

Eating Healthy at Taco Bell? It's possible
Eating out is a staple of American life, but it is also one reason why we are heavier than
ever before. Samantha Taylor, owner of Pure Health Studios, offers tips on how to make
responsible choices while dining out at area restaurants.

By Samantha Taylor
Pure Health Studios
It's a fact of life:
Most Americans eat
fast food 3 times a
week!
So, it's better to
be wise with what
we eat than to be in
denial, right?
Fast food is obvi-
ously the least healthy restaurant food that
you can consume although
each place has a few healthi-
er options. So, for this article,
I did my review on Taco Bell.
It's unfortunate that they
don't offer any whole wheat
products although I think
that will change in a few
years. i
For now, they have quite a
few options that are on the B E
lower calorie side (just make
sure you don't eat too much).
You may already know that I used to be a
binger - at Taco Bell, I used to get three
tacos, a Nachos Bell Grande and a steak
quesadilla (talk about overeating).
Fortunately, I haven't had that problem
in more than seven years. I still eat fast
food occasionally, but much less than I
used to. The funny thing about fast food is
if you stop eating it for a relatively long
time and then go back to eating it, it be-
gins to taste weird and obviously
processed.
You just don't notice that "processed
taste" if you eat it all the time.
I grew up on fast food and even as a

-'I

health professional, I stopped eating it only
about a year ago. If you are pressed for
time and want to have a quick, tasty fix,
Taco Bell has got some good alternatives
to calorie-loaded burgers and fries.
Your best bet is the chicken soft tacos
even though it comes with a white flour
tortilla. It's not too big a deal if you eat it
once in a while, but it's a whole different
story if you have white flour all the time.
Two chicken soft tacos amount to only
380 calories and are filling.
Or, if you want some
crunch, you can get two
crunchy tacos for only 340
calories. I still stick with
chicken because the quality
of meat in crunchy tacos is
not exactly the best option.
But hey, the reality is that
even if some people hear
* that, they will still eat it, but it
IL KL at least helps to know that
you have lower-calorie op-
tions.
One great thing aboutTaco Bell is they
have a nutrition calculator on the website
that lets you build an entire meal piece by
piece that lets you know and control just
how many calories you are consuming. I
highly recommend you look up the menu
at www.tacobell.com and take advantage
of the calculator, not only withTaco Bell,
but with most fast food restaurants. If
you choose to eat fast food, it pays to
know exactly what you're putting into
your body.

dering, visit Samantha Taylor's blog at

COLLEGE, from page 1
prepare graduates to be ready to enter the
work force, in fields where there is a de-
mand.
The college dlclibcr.ucly selected the SR
54 location because of its convenient loca-
tion. It is easily accessible from 1-75 and
from the Suncoast Parkway,Walker said. It
also will provide a straight shot into
Hillsborough County when the Sunlake
Boulevard extension is completed in future
years.
The college also liked the location be-
cause it is close to a 72-acre site where T.
Rowe Price plans to build an office complex
that may one day employ up to 1,600 work-
ers.
T. Rowe Price bought the site at the
southwest corner of SR 54 and the planned
extension of Sunlake Boulevard on July 1,
2009 for $13.5 million, said Brian Lewbart,
spokesman for the investment management
company based in Baltimore, Md.
"We did purchase the property with an
eye toward having that site for a future ex-
pansion in the Tampa area," Lewbert said.
Economic conditions have put that plan
in a holding pattern for now.
"The timeline for our expansion is not
certain," Lewbert said.The company initially
would construct one or two buildings of
150,000 square feet and would have room

to grow, he said.
The project would represent the first
time the company owned land for an opera-
tion in Tampa, he added. The plan would be
to shift employees working at its leased of-
fice space in Tampa to the Pasco site.
The college would like to establish a rela-
tionship with T Rowe Price, Walker said,
especially for students in its business pro-
grams.
Tuition for Rasmussen College ranges
from $395 to $420 a credit hour, with pro-
grams requiring about 180 hours for
completion,Walker said. Scholarships and fi-
nancial aid are available for students who
qualify, and the college attempts to work
with students to help them arrange a sched-
ule that accommodates work and family
life.
Walker said she expects the new facility
to open with a staff of about 10 people and
to gradually add students and staff. At full ca-
pacity, she expects it to have about 1,000
students and 50 to 60 staff members.
Besides opening the new facility,
Rasmussen is moving its Rasmussen College
West Pasco facility, now located in Holiday,
to a new location in New Port Richey. It ex-
pects the New Port Richey facility to be
open for students in January.

College, go to www.Rasmussen.edu.

Rubio, Romney coming to Land 0' Lakes Friday

By Elizabeth Gwilt

U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio and
former Massachusetts governor and presi-
dential candidate Mitt Romney are planning
a campaign stop at Benedetto's Restaurant
in Land O' Lakes for Friday, Oct 1.
"It's a huge honor for the restaurant," said
owner Ben Pumo. "We need to talk about
the economy and how we can fix it."
The Rubio campaign has tabbed the
event a"ReclaimAmerica Rally."
As a small business owner, Pumo said he

ference in detection," Winsey said."... It's
very important to start getting tested be-
cause younger women are getting it. I have
two women right now who are under the
age of 40 being treated for cancer.Yearly
screenings save lives."
Despite the amount of money raised dur-
ing the last few years, Darnall said "the well
has run dry" and to continue to offer the
free service, they need community support.
To participate, men need to either do-
nate or get people to donate money to
sponsor their walk, which goes around the
campus at UCH and the LifeHope building
that houses the Breast Care Center. The
event starts at 9 a.m. Oct. 2 at 3100 Fletcher
Ave with registration at 8 a.m.
While it is advertised as "walking a mile
in her shoes," the actual trek is much short-
er, but the catch is the men have to do it in
high heels.
"I've noticed over the years the husbands
and partners of women with breast cancer
usually feel very helpless because they think
they can't do anything,"Winsey said."This is
a way to help in the fight. We don't care
how much people want to donate. We'll
take $5 because every little bit helps."
Last year 60 men participated and
Winsey expects about 75 this year. One of

istration, including healthcare reform.
Pumo said people need to talk about
changes and solutions."We are worried be-
cause we know our healthcare rates are
going to go up, and that this reform has hid-
den tax agendas," he said.
Rubio, a Republican, faces Democrat
Kendrick Meek and Gov. Charlie Crist, who
is running with no party affiliation.

there are two main reasons he joined in.
"For one certainly it's the right thing to
do, and two my wife (Terra) is a breast can-
cer survivor," Hackman said. "It's been 12
years. So every opportunity I have to help in
the fight against breast cancer I do it."
It will not be the first time Hackman has
worn high heels, but that is only because he has
participated in the event the last three years.
"I have a whole new respect for women
at this time every year because this is about
the most painful thing that you can do to
your feet," Hackman said.
The pain is worth it to help women like
Noland.
"I am most grateful for the love and at-
tention that I received from the Breast Care
Center, knowing that I did not have any in-
surance or money to pay for my care,"
Noland said.

Lutz Rangers drawing hundreds to soccer league

By Kyle LoJacono
klojacono@cnewspubs.com

FC Tampa Lutz Rangers is less than two
months old, but the first soccer program
ever in Lutz is already drawing hundreds
from around Hillsborough and Pasco coun-
ties.
"It's a great facility we get to use at Oscar
Cooler Sports Complex," said Rangers
founder Mike Connell of Lutz."It's a perfect
location for the people of Lutz and Odessa
who have never had a soccer program and
we're getting kids from Land O' Lakes and
Wesley Chapel too."
The park has been around since 1975,
but until its expansionAug. 14 there was no
room for soccer. Now the Rangers have
plenty of practice and game fields.
Land O' Lakes High boys soccer coach
Mark Pearson, of Lutz, is coaching the boys
U8Academy for the Rangers, which is a pro-
gram for kids just learning the game.
"I've been coaching at Land 0' Lakes
High for 15 years, so it was a no brainer to
start coaching here too," Pearson said."I like
coaching the kids at this level here because
it's a nice break from coaching high school.
It's a different kind of mentality from the
pressure of getting the kids good enough to
make the playoffs to teaching these kids the
basics. It's a nice change."
One of the players in the academy is
Driss Belhassan of Lutz. Belhassan said he
likes playing soccer because he gets to run
around with his friends.
Connell is coaching the Ull and U13
boys teams for the club. Derek Walters of
Land O' Lakes plays on that U13 team and
he cannot get enough soccer.

coach Mark Pearson looks on. (Photos by Kyle LoJacono)

"I've played since I was 6,"Walters, 13,
said."Soccer is like my life. My dream is to
play soccer when I grow up and I love play-
ing here in Lutz."
Walters has also played for Hillsborough
County United. He said he likes playing at
the new Lutz fields because it is closer to
his home and because of the coaches.

"The coaches are just so much better,"
Walters said. "They know exactly how to
make us all become much stronger players."
Connell said there are 11 competitive
teams for players ages 8 to 15 and 25 recre-
ational squads for ages 5 to 16. There are
280 children signed up, while another 18
men from around Lutz and Odessa make up
the Rangers men's team. Connell said every-
one on the adult team is at least 40, but that
is not a requirement to join.
"It's special to have so many people inter-

ested in soccer here," Connell said."We have
a lot of families in a 15-mile radius all coming
here to play soccer because we have the
right goals for the kids ... We want them to
be the best while having fun playing soccer.
It's not about how good they are the first
game or after the first year, but when they
leave the program at 15-years-old."
Connell also
runs Unlimited
Motion Soccer
Academy in Wesley
Chapel at Sports +
Field. Biko Claxton
of Wesley Chapel is
one of Unlimited
Motion's coaches
and also helps the
Rangers players get
better at their
speed and agility.
"It's a great way
for me to give back
to another commu-
nity and spread the
love of soccer,"
Claxton said. "If I Coach Biko Claxton
can get more peo- watches some agility
ple playing soccer drills in practice.
here then I'm get-
ting the job done as a coach."
The current season for the Rangers runs
through the end of February. There will be
another season starting inApril. For more in-
formation on the Rangers for interested
players or coaches, visit
www.fctampalutz.com.
"I'm hoping these kids stay in love with
soccer and get to high school to make them
really strong in soccer," Connell said."In a
couple of years I'm hoping our high schools
will each have state championships.That's
when I'll know the program is really work-

Cowboys come up big on Ron Allen's special night

By Kyle LoJacono
klojacono@cnewspubs.com

Gaither High christened Ron Allen Field
with a 17-10 victory over north
Hillsborough County rival Freedom High.
Before the game the Cowboys had a cer-
emony to name the field after the school's
first principal, who led Gaither from 1984-
1993.
"I was ok until they started playing the
school's song," Allen said. "That kind of
brought a tear to my eye. I just want to thank
everyone, especially the original faculty."
Original faculty still at Gaither signed a
football that was presented to Allen during
the ceremony. He said it is one of the most
special gifts he has ever received and he will
put it in his living room so he always sees it.
Allen, of Lutz, was Chamberlain High's
principal before coming to Gaither. Many
graduates from Gaither and Chamberlain
came to see him.
"It's very special," said current Gaither
principal MarieWhelan, who was a student
at the school during Allen's tenure."He really
deserves it for everything he's done for the
school. He's the reason the school is what it
is today."
The game was also special for the
Cowboys as the seven-point win was the

first for Gaither at home in nearly two years.
"It's a great feeling to win in front of
what I feel is the best supporting cast in
Hillsborough County," said Cowboys coach
Mark Kantor."I'm excited for the school, for
the kids and to win for our principal. I love
winning games for that lady because she's a
fantastic principal, and especially on the
night we dedicate the field to Mr. RonAllen."
Both offenses started slowly,
each losing fumbles on their sec-
ond drives.
The Cowboys (2-2) got on
track first when quarterback Shug
Oyegunle ran for a 27-yard touch-
down with 1:34 left in the first
half. Gaither got the ball back with
1:06 remaining and scored again
when Oyegunle hit Josh Bultron
with a 36-yard pass.
Patriots (1-3) quarterback
Dominic Marino got his team on
the board in the fourth quarter
with a 21-yard touchdown pass to
Robert Lohnes. Two drives later
Freedom made a 35-yard field goal
and to get within a touchdown.
all night. The Cowboys gave the Patriots

a chance to tie the game by losing a fumble
with 38 seconds remaining on their own
43, but the visitors were sacked twice on
the drive to end the game.

"We had our opportunities and we just
didn't do anything with them," said Freedom
coach Tchecoy Blount. "We've got to get
back to work and fix all the problems as fast
as we can."
Oyegunle finished 9-of-13 passing for
101 yards and added another 60 yards on
six runs.
The Cowboys defense recorded four
sacks and forced three turnovers, two of
which were interceptions by defensive back
Tyler McCollum.
"I kept seeing them going over the mid-
dle to (Lohnes), so when I saw him doing it
again I just tried to make a tackle and the
ball ended up in my hands," McCollum said.
"The next one it was just an overthrow that
I went and got."
Lohnes had five catches for 120 yards.
Blount called Lohnes the team's ironman for
playing on both sides of the ball while re-
turning punts and kicks.
"That kid is a football player," Kantor said
of Lohnes. "I was scared to death of him
touching the football all night. He deserves
to play somewhere in college."

Academy at the Lakes locks up playoff spot in 6-man league

By Kyle LoJacono
klojacono@cnewspubs.com

Academy at the Lakes football team has
rebounded from a 0-2 start by winning their
next five in a row.
The Wildcats (5-2) have already clinched
one of the eight playoff spots in the Florida
six-man football league, which has 18 teams.
As of Sept. 23, the academy was in the
fourth-place slot and are one win away from
their 2009 total.
Much of the winning has come as the
Wildcats have become more accustomed to
each other as only two players, Alex
Thompson and Max Osnos, returned from
last year's team. The players are not the only
ones becoming used to six-man football.
"I'm right there learning the game with
them," said academy coach John
Castelamare, who coached 11-man football
at Pasco County schools for 38 years before
coming to the private school."I think we've
picked things up quick. We lost our first

game by a point, which we could
have won, and now we've gotten a
bunch in a row."
Running back Jarrett Harvey, a jun-
ior, is in his first year at the school
and did not expect the team to come
together so fast.
"I thought we'd have a slow year,
but the guys are proving me wrong"
Harvey said.
Junior quarterback A.J. Carlson
said the talent was always there, the
team just needed time together.
"We're coming together as a team
now," said Carlson, of Lutz."When you
have a team with just 16 guys on it
you need to come together more ,
than a big team because you can't r
stay away from people you don't like. Alex
You have to get along. Also having a
fantastic coach doesn't hurt."
Osnos, of Land O' Lakes, said leaders like
Carlson, Harvey and running back Luke
Warner has helped the team gel, but none of

the players could remember a single mo-
ment that brought them together - but
Castelamare can.
"It was that first win," Castelamare said."I
think that gave them confidence they could
win and made things a lot easier for them."
The Wildcats' last three opponents, in-
cluding Zephyrhills ChristianAcademy, are
all undefeated as of Sept. 23.
"I think the team has a chance to get
close to if not win a state title," Carlson said.
"We have to show our last three opponents
that we are ready to play anyone."
The academy already has a six-man
championship from the 2006 season. The
next year the Wildcats expanded to 11-man
football and finished 1-9.Thompson was on
that 2007 team.

"That was a tough year,"Thompson, a sen-
ior, said. "This is my last year, so I'm hoping to
win a state championship before I leave."
Castelamare said after the first two losses
he thought it would be a long year, but now
sees a chance for the team to go deep in the
playoffs. He added that the whole school is
very supportive of the team and in turn he
makes sure the boys do not neglect their
school work.
"If I hear there's a problem in a class
then there is some extra running involved,"
Castelamare said. "We make it clear that
school is important."
The Wildcats next play at Lakeside
Christian High Oct. 1 and then take on
Zephyrhills Christian Oct. 8 for their home-
coming game.

Interest rates are lower than they've been in the last 50 years. That means that right now,
you can buy a home for a smaller monthly payment than ever. This may well be a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Buying your M/I dream home now is a really smart move.

/ was born in New Orleans. My family still lives here. We have to restore the Gulf communities
for the shrimpers, fishermen, hotel and restaurant owners who live and work here.
- Iris Cross, BP Community Outreach

No oil has flowed into the Gulf for weeks. But we know this is just the beginning of our
work. BP has taken full responsibility for the cleanup in the Gulf and that includes
keeping you informed.
Restoring Gulf Communities
We can't undo this tragedy. But we can help people get back on their feet. We have
been working with impacted communities since day one.
Partnering with local governments and community organizations, my job is to listen to
people's needs and frustrations and find ways to help. We have 19 community centers
and teams in four states, listening and helping.
Restoring The Economy
BP is here in Gulf communities with shrimpers, fishermen, hotel and restaurant owners,
helping to make them whole.
More than 120,000 claim payments totaling over $375 million have already gone to people
affected by the spill. We have committed a $20 billion independent fund to pay all legitimate
claims, including lost incomes until people impacted can go back to work. And none of this
will be paid by taxpayers.
BP has also given grants of $87 million to the states to help tourism recover and bring
people back to the Gulf beaches.
Restoring The Environment
We're going to keep looking for oil and cleaning it up if we find it. Teams will remain in
place for as long as it takes to restore the Gulf Coast.
And we've dedicated $500 million to work with local and national scientific experts on the
impact of the spill and to restore environmental damage.
Thousands of BP employees have their roots in the Gulf. We support over 10,000 jobs in
the region and people here are our neighbors. We know we haven't always been perfect,
but we will be here until the oil is gone and the people and businesses are back to normal.
We will do everything we can to make this right.
