The city council agreed on Nov. 14 to increase the size of the library once an architect and engineer are found. Vicki Elkins, director of library and museum services at the Zephyrhills Public Library, said the majority of the $1.5 million cap allotted for the expansion project is coming from the Penny for Pasco sales tax. She added that the goal is to have an architect and engineer chosen by the end of January. It will mean a lot to the community, Elkins said. More room will mean more programs such as those to bolster literacy more books, a larger reading area and a larger childrens area. Kathleen Burnside, who spent 33 years working at the Zephyrhills library and was director from 1997-2009, knows all too well how cramped the library is. It just needs to be expanded. Every aspect in the library is crowded, Burnside said. The bigger workspace will allow more room for computers, which will reduce wait time. Theres a lot of people in town or around any town that do not have access to computers, and this fills the need for them because you have the haves and the have-nots, Burnside said. We need to help people get jobs, look up things on the Internet. Technology is here and its not going to go away. With the advent of iPads, Kindles, Nooks and technologys pace quickening by the day, Burnside said libraries are still vital institutions. Theres a lot of people who just like to turn the pages and read a book, too, Burnside said. Its endless what libraries can offer. Tom and Joan Stephenson, who flock to Tropical Acres from Nova Scotia, Canada during the winter, said they dont have a television or computer in their Zephyrhills residence, so they take advantage of the computersZephyrhills library getting makeover The Zephyrhills Public Library was last renovated in 1981. On Nov. 14, the city council went ahead with a plan to expand, and perhaps double, the size of the library. See LIBRARY, page15

A Thanksgiving theme was used to decorate the tables, etc. Before the activities, the ladies colored some Christmas bags that will be filled and presented to the first-graders at the December meeting. The ladies donated crayons and color books for these bags. The day began with a demonstration by the weekly exercise club. It was presented to us some chair-exercises and standing exercises as well. This is a good example in senior parks as some cannot do the more strenuous types of exercising. The business meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag led by President Sara Lawson. The usual business meeting continued with Secretary Deb Cross reading last months minutes as well as Bev Fick reading the treasurers report. The meeting consisted of discussing the upcoming bazaar that will be held on Sunday, Dec. 4 along with discussions about future events for the upcoming season. Some of the events include a health fair for January, a master gardener presentation at the February meeting and a fashion show in March. We, as always, welcome any of the Sundance ladies to come and enjoy the monthly meetings of the Womens Club. And also a reminder to bring imperishable food items for the Neighborhood Care Center.Deb Cross, left, and Bev Fick spent time coloring Christmas bags that will be filled and presented to the first-grade kids from West Zephyrhills Elementary in December. His wife, Barbara, is getting her red and white dress ready along with accompanying wig and flowers to look the part of Mrs. Santa. They are preparing for the annual big event on the first week in December when children from a local elementary school come to Betmar Coffee Hour to present their Christmas program to all their adopted grandmas and grandpas. Many, many of our residents start as soon as Christmas is over to begin to knit, sew and crochet mittens, caps, scarves and afghans for the next year. Other items collected for the children to take home are school supplies, cookies and candy. Santa, Mrs. Santa and all the elves are getting everything ready for the big day. Pictures from last year show some of the grandmas making their list and checking it twice while Santa is getting a big Christmas kiss from Mrs. Santa. Its a wonderful time to share a wonderful season with both the youngest child and the eldest senior.Santa and his helpers Luman Rockhill sports his Santa Clause garb, while his wife, Barbara, plays the role of Mrs. Clause. CnewsPubs.com / 813-909-2800 THE LAKER/PARK NEWS November 30, 2011 7 GEM ESTATES Lee HeffelfingerGem EstatesLike everyone else here in the parks of the Zephyrhills area, it is so nice to be back with family and friends, the weather has been terrific and every one is catching up with the news. Every week our coffee hour social has grown in members, had a lot of new faces (people who bought in the park recently). But so many people are sick or in hospitals. We certainly wish a speedy recovery for all. November has several park residents birthday celebrations: Dea-Ann Burgess, Marilyn Singletary, Gary Gibson and Otto Reinbold. Several anniversaries were also celebrated Lee and Randall Smith-64 years, Deanne and Lynn Harrington-53 years, and J.B. and Marilyn Singletary-46 years.Congratulations to these folks and best wishes for many more. President Joe Casey acknowledged all the veterans in attendance and welcomed new residents, Rita and Walter Kissel from New York. A large number of people attended the Memorial Service for Don Fetting held at Community of Christ Church, on Saturday, Nov. 5. It was an inspiring service and enlisted people in attendance to relate their relationship with Don. He was a very helpful and giving person here in our park and will be missed. A second celebration of the life of Althea Parsons was held in our clubhouse Nov. 12, by her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Brian Craig. Several members of the immediate family related special memories they had of Allie. Our Thanksgiving dinner will be at the clubhouse on Thanksgiving Day with Russ Heffelfinger at the helm. We have many volunteers to help and that way it will be a success. The deadline for ticket reservation was the 20th and everyone is asked to bring their own table service. Our bus trips for the season are planned and getting a lot of response. The first trip is going to the Seminole Casino in Immokalee, Nov. 22. The cost is $30 and we welcome any one to join us. The Early Bird Dinner theater, Saturday, Dec. 10, to enjoy the Sensuous Senator will be $62. These shows are always comedies and hilarious. Again this year we are running a bus to Tampa to see the Gasparilla Parade on Saturday, Jan. 28. Call me about getting a prime reserved seat right on the parade route. You can always join us here at Gem Estates. We are so glad to see the residents coming back and for those not here yet, we wish them a safe journey.Gem Estates eyes first trip of the season

By Helene RubensteinGrand HorizonsAfter we spent the final week in Connecticut where power lines were down and power was out everywhere, we arrived in Florida to warmer weather and warm greetings from our friends and neighbors. On Tuesday night, I went to bingo and it was just super. It was everything that I had mentioned in the last letter and more. The prizes were huge and there were so many bingo players. It almost seemed like the entire community attended. I realize they didnt, but the crowd was so large that it seemed that way. When the actual games got underway, the crowd became serious. The next morning we all attended coffee and doughnut hour and met others that I hadnt seen previously. People were nice enough to explain about things we missed. We sat and talked and even had our blood pressures taken. We now have a blood pressure clinic and this is an added plus as we seem to forget about these things when we are away for the winter. This was a gentle reminder and we each got a card to record our readings. On Thursday we had mahjong at Marilyn Webbs home and there were 11 of us so we had three tables. Mahjong is a unique game that has been around for a long time. You can hear a pin drop when people were thinking of their next moves. This is one game where you really have to have your thinking cap on. There also was card making going on at the same time. Here they do wonderful things for different organizations. One thing that they had on Thursday that Marty and I planned to attend (but didnt) was a jam session. I do not know exactly what this entails but the people that attended said they had a good time. Maybe by the next jam session, well be there. On Friday, 49 of us converged at Spaghetti Warehouse and had a delicious meal. The sauce was as good as the last time I went here. I must say that when the 49 of us were in our own little corner of the restaurant, the chatter from all was unreal but when the food came, it was relatively quiet. In other words, see what food does, especially their food. This event was hosted by Chris Buckley, Chris Fulton and Linda Tutin and they all did a terrific job. On Saturday they had egg n bag, which I spoke about previously, and which Marty and I both enjoy, but we had to miss this particular one as we had a previous engagement. Hopefully we will attend next months. I can say this: that egg n bag is a lovely event where you get your omelet with only the ingredients that you desire. There are also potatoes and juice. At the end of a delightful meal, people can either go home or sit and talk. This does create a pleasant atmosphere. Something new has been added on the third Saturday of the month. It is an all-American breakfast and will be hosted by Andy Castonguay. This also looks promising and will tell you about it in the future. We also have a pancake breakfast on the first Saturday (but we were not in Florida) and this is hosted by Joyce and Dave Billig. Jerry and Chris Buckley are planning something new for Nov. 26 called the Mayberry RFD Ho-Down Potluck. I simply cant wait for this event and am looking forward to it. They promise to have a good ol country ho-down and they say that the chuck wagon special for the event will be hot dogs and other goodies. Chris and Jerry also say, Yall come and have a great time. With a new community center, we are getting more and more activities. The appreciation by the early arrivals of changes to date during the offseason has been very supportive. The plan to bring sunshine back to Happy Days is obvious as you approach our park, with the rec hall a cheerful yellow, the white fences and the upgraded entrance. The pool has been resurfaced and finished in aqua blue and white. This enthusiasm has been picked up by some of our early arrivals, who have volunteered to complete a few smaller freshening up projects. Dick Johnson took on the repainting of the shuffleboard shelters a clean white, and quickly added John Sweet and Ian Marwick to his crew. The crew, with the addition of Ray Henderson and a bevy of safety/traffic supervisors, Marg Jay, Sharon Huycke, Pat Sweet and Bridget Marwick, then replaced all the in-park road signs. The park activities are all starting up this month, and with the participation so far, are looking forward to an exciting season. To quote Dan and Judy Olson, We have a wonderful residents and its great to see them enjoying their time here and having fun. We really appreciate all of their support and the support of our great staff, Jim and Maggie McKenna, for all of their help the past few months. We are looking forward to a great season and welcome new friends and all our old friends back again! In addition, the first Coffee Hour of the season included a surprise party honoring Bob and Marlene Clark, who retired June 1 after 17 years of service and dedication to Happy Days. We all want to wish them a happy and wonderful retirement! Congratulations Bob and Marlene! (Photo courtesy of Donna J. MacArthur)B y Donna J. M acArthurM orni n g s i de RV EstatesMorningside RV Estates, a 400-unit park in Dade City, is gradually coming back to life as more Northern snowbirds return to their cozy winter nests. As of midNovember, park manager Judy Van Scoyk said about half of the residents were back with more coming in every day. Were happy to see the regulars returning, and excited to welcome some new residents as well as some former Morningside folks whove been elsewhere and are now back, Judy says. The first major event of the new season and also a first for Morningside Park was a Veterans Day/Remembrance Day service with an international flavor. Park residents Susan Cole, of Nova Scotia, and Linda McLaughlin, of Michigan, recognizing the considerably large number of veterans living in Morningside from both Canada and USA, organized the well-attended service which was held on Nov. 11. The solemn ceremony, honoring surviving veterans as well as those who died in service in past wars, began with the national anthems of both countries. Following the traditional two-minute silence at the 11th hour, The Last Post a Reveille military call, which traditionally signaled the start of a soldiers day was followed by a stirring rendition of The Lament. Both pieces of music are synonymous with war-memorial events.A reading of the poem, In Flanders Fields, written by a Canadian field surgeon who served in WWI, was followed by the recognition of all veterans present. Two American and two Canadian veterans placed a wreath between the flags of their respective countries. After the collective reciting of The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States, park resident, Rev. Walter Crosby offered a prayer and the benediction. The ceremony was brought to a close with God Save the Queen and God Bless America. The heartfelt service, which will now become an annual event at Morningside Park, was followed by a lunch of bean soup and cornbread a very basic meal, which was a staple food for soldiers in the trenches during both World Wars. Regular programs are getting underway in Morningside Park. Residents got together, again with thankful hearts, to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. Plans are also in the works for the park to again enter a decorated float in the annual Dade City Christmas Parade on Friday, Dec. 2, and ideas are circulating for the Parks own Christmas Parade, on Sunday, Dec. 18. Two new additional services, which will enhance the already well-equipped park, are the installation of park-wide Wi-Fi and the weekly visit of the Hill-Billy Farm Market every Tuesday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. I recently saw a sign outside a park in Zephyrhills that went something like this: Welcome back! Doesnt it feel good to shake the hand of an old friend again? I think that just about says it all.MORNINGSIDE RV ESTATES Remembering our veterans

And while being linked up will be beneficial to library users like the Stephensons who said they go about three times a week to the library they havent lost sight of what libraries originally stand for. Dont want a big, new building with no new books, Tom said. Mike Walls, 62, goes once a week to the library and said he is all for the expansion. A self-described avid reader, Walls said he would like to see more titles, more authors and a larger selection of large-print choices. He added he would like to see more of an emphasis put on getting young people to read. Theres so many things people can learn from by reading a book, Walls said. Adding to the library wont solely benefit the community. The librarys staff is just as enthused. Our work area and office area is extremely small, Elkins said. Were always bumping into each other, having to go around each other. The last time the librarys size was amended was in 1981. It was originally built in 1964. Elkins said once construction begins to enlarge the library, that it would move to public quarters, but said no selection had been chosen yet. Its just amazing that its finally going to happen, hopefully, Burnside said. LynnSpecial to Park NewsBusiness owners spend time on developing business plans to begin a new business and work hard to build and grow it into a successful enterprise but rarely consider or plan for an exit strategy. An exit strategy is equally essential when the owner wants to quit working full time. There are only three options available: close the business, sell the business, or keep it operating. Having an exit strategy in place gives the owner control over future plans for themselves and the business. Successful businesses utilize budgeting to effectively grow and protect the enterprises staffing, inventory, operations and emergency planning; but rarely incorporate an exit strategy. Without proper planning and implementation, most entrepreneurs cannot successfully quit work when they wish to and are forced to retire when times are right. Having an active exit strategy enables the business owner to retire on his or her terms at a date and age that he or she can control.Like all workers, business owners cannot enjoy a secure retirement until they have a cash flow to sufficiently replace the income earned during their working years. An exit strategy is the only way to provide for this option and turn the hope into a reality. However, most retirement options do not provide the flexibility necessary due to external governmental rules and regulations that limit contributions or funds accessibility, 401-Ks, SEPs and IRAs limit yearly amounts contributed and when and how funds are distributed. The most effective option available for an exit strategy is the Sec. 7702, which offers the most flexibility to the entrepreneur/business owner. Sec. 7702 is an IRS-approved life insurance which offers tax free growth and income, provides flexibility for contribution amounts in good and bad economic times, allows access to cash prior to age 59 1/2 and does not have to be offered to all employees. Based on fund growth performance, the business owner can elect to retire sooner or later or reduce time managing the business and designate a replacement of their choice. Sec. 7702 can be structured to be self completing if disabled and provide sufficient cash for the owners family in the event of death and give the family the option to maintain the business or sell it. Most importantly, the business owner is in control of the plan and can make necessary changes throughout the years. While not a tax deductible budgeted expense, the funds grow income tax free and are distributed income tax free. The owner can elect who, other than themselves, can participate in the program such as family members or selected key employees. Jon D. Manionb c m ani on@cnewspub s.co mIts a tradition thats been going on for years, but every year as the event approaches the volunteers get excited all over again. The Walk through Bethlehem, an annual outreach by Richland Baptist Church in Zephyrhills, involves dozens of volunteers who tell the story of Jesus by recreating the first-century town where Jesus was born. Transforming the patch of ground into an ancient town is no small feat, said Murrel Dozier, the church secretary. The work begins in October, with dozens of volunteers pitching in to rebuild the ancient city. Others step up to play the roles of the shopkeepers, Mary and Joseph, the Three Wise Men and other characters in the story. Several hundred people typically visit the live Nativity each night, Dozier said. Those taking the walk will be guided through the reconstructed city, where they will see a census taker, city people of all ages, shopkeepers and Roman guards all wearing period costumes. As visitors make their way through the city, theyll hear a conversation between their guide and various shopkeepers, theyll hear the story of the birth of Christ and theyll see a live Nativity scene. The Walk through Bethlethem features a live donkey and sheep, and whenever possible, a live baby, too, Dozier said. This years event is set for 6-10 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9; 6-10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10; and 6-9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11. Parking and admission are free. The church is at 40443 Stewart Road, about halfway between Zephyrhills and Dade City. There were more than 400 people that preregistered for the Bug Jam at the 23rd annual Pasco Bug Jam on Nov. 13. Participants were trying to reclaim the Guinness World Record for most people crammed into a Volkswagen Bug. The Bug Jam set the record on Nov. 10, 2009, but students from Asbury University in Kentucky since broke that record with 20 bug jammers. Despite various forms of body twisting and bone bending, the record was not broken. The Bug used for the record-setting attempt belonged to Jim Roney, who volunteered his car for the jam. Another Bug, Miles was on hand to witness the record-breaking attempt. Miles was the Bug used by students at Asbury University to set the record. Participants have to be at least 5 feet tall and 18 years old. Dozens crowded this Volkswagen Bug to witness a record-setting moment and the physics of jamming 21 people into the two-door vehicle. After the car had emptied on Nov. 13, the record stood untouched. Participants contorted their bodies every which way to try and fit inside the compact car.Cramming a bug, Guinness in sightMinutes earlier, 19 people stuffed into this two-door bug with the doors closed for five seconds. Beware of Medicare Disadvantage PlansIts that time of the year again! Salespeople are hustling to get you to trade your Medicare for a Replacement or an HMO. With traditional Medicare, you can see any eye doctor you want. But with replacements, you may not get choices. Many plans dont even have a local specialists or surgery optionsdespite what the salesmen say. Dont fall for the common sales trick that gets you to replace serious medical and surgical eye care coverage for a cheap eye glasses exam with a non-specialist.
