TheLAKER SEPTEMBER 21,2011 FREE Zephyrhills/Dade City EditionBookshop benefits Zephyrhills hospice By B.C.Manionbcmanion@cnewspubs.comVisitors to this Wesley Chapel home might feel a tad bit disoriented if they've never been there before. From outside,it appears to be like any other well-kept suburban home in the Country Crossing subdivision. But step inside and you'll find thousands of books and VHS tapes, all neatly arranged on shelves in the hallway, living room and dining room. Welcome to Barbara Todaro's book sale,an event she holds to raise money for Gulfside Regional Hospice Inc. It began small,as these things often do. She enjoys reading and wanted to buy some books, but found that the prices in bookstores were a bit steeper than she wanted to pay.An idea popped into her head. What about collecting books and selling them to help Gulfside Hospice? It began as a sale on her front yard. Then it moved into the garage. Now,it takes her entire hallway and two full rooms which she has devoted exclusively to the cause. She and her mom, Jeanette Tatro, who is a volunteer for Gulfside, work together to sell the books. They hold the sale about every 6-8 weeks, and all of the proceeds go to Gulfside Center for Hospice Care in Zephyrhills, which is one of the places where Tatro works as a volunteer. So far, they've raised about $1,000. The two-day sale is on Fridays and Saturdays, from 8 a.m.to 2 p.m.each day. Both women said they owe a debt of gratitude for the kindness There is a wide selection of books available at Barbara Todaro's book sales. See BOOKS,page13 By Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comIn the Florida Shuffleboard Association's (FSA) 83-year history, only one woman has ever scored 1,000 career points.Zephyrhills resident Joan Cook plans to soon make it two. Cook has amassed 895 points since she started playing 16 years ago.Players earn points for finishing near the top of statesanctioned events and Cook is likely to crack the 1,000-point mark in two years, especially considering how dedicated she is to the game. "Other than shuffleboard,I don't do a whole lot,"Cook sad."It's my life." The Betmar Acres resident takes a break from the sport each summer, but is a regular sight at the RV park's shuffleboard courts. There is something about the strategy, clanging of the discuses and spirited nature of the game that keeps her coming back. "I started because I thought I'd be good at it,"Cook said."As it's turned out,I have been.I've always been competitive,so I want to play something that I can win at.I love sports, and it's a good way to stay active." Cook grew up playing baseball and bowling. She was born in Ontario,Canada and first came to Zephyrhills 25 years ago. Zephyrhills resident Joan Cook is 105 points away from being the second woman shuffleboarder to reach 1,000. This year's Medicare annual enrollment dates are from Oct.15 through Dec.7.That means the enrollment period is beginning a full month earlier than it did last year and ending three weeks earlier. Volunteers who help people navigate the bureaucratic maze of Medicare say they're concerned that people who are not paying attention will try to enroll too late. That's why they're putting an emphasis on outreach programs to get the word out and to provide assistance, said Randy Caldwell of Land O' Lakes, who volunteers for the Serving Health Insurance Needs for the Elderly (SHINE) program. "People just don't understand the bureaucracy. It can be intimidating and confusing,"Caldwell said."The need is so great,"he said, and they don't always realize that help is available. That's where SHINE volunteers come in. "We're available. We have outreach programs with churches, social organizations,"Caldwell said. They also can provide one-on-one assistance. SHINE volunteers realize it can be difficult and confusing to enroll in Medicare plans,to keep up with changes and to compare plans that are available, said Jan Rauer of Lutz,a volunteer who trains SHINE volunteers. When helping people navigate the system,SHINE volunteers focus on helping people find plans that are suitable for their needs by presenting various options and explaining the differences. The idea is to present information, not to advocate particular plans, Caldwell said. To prepare for the enrollment period, individuals should ask themselves: Have your health needs changed? Are your drugs covered by the plan you are considering? Does your doctor accept the plan you are considering? Does your plan fit your budget? Be sure to compare all costs, including premiums, copays, deductibles and coinsurance. Those who are approaching age 65 should also be aware that enrollment in Medicare is not automatic, Rauer said. There is a seven-month period for initial enrollment into Medicare, she said. That includes the three months before an individual turns 65,the month of the individual's birthday and the three months following it. Pasco High graduate struck while evacuating othersBy Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comHours after celebrating his 21st birthday, Pasco High graduate and Dade City resident Justin Inversso was fatally struck by lightning while at Adventure Island water park on Sept.10.Justin was working as a lifeguard supervisor and was trying to clear guests off the Key West Rapids water slide in anticipation of severe weather coming through the area.He was standing in 2-3 feet of water when the strike happened at about 11:45 a.m.,according to a Tampa Fire Rescue incident report. The report states other employees pulled Justin out of the water and tried to perform CPR.He was taken to University Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Justin's father is Sgt. Frank Inversso,a bailiff supervisor with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office. "He was a strong young man, conscientious of living his life according to the ways of the Lord,"Frank said."He was a true lifeguard. He was committed to being a true life preserver and soul preserver. "He is at peace," Frank continued."He would be celebrating his life as a victory."Justin graduated from Pasco in 2009 and from PascoHernando Community College this spring. He had just started his junior year at the University of South Florida as an engineering student.Frank said Justin had hoped to be part of an engineering program at Busch Gardens, which would help pay for his tuition while giving him experience in the field.Frank said Justin was an honors student while at Pasco, where he also was a captain of the Pirates swimming and diving team. He also played on the Dade City school's basketball team as a sophomore. The park was in the process of closing the ride and other attractions because of the approaching storm when Justin was hit, according to the fire rescue incident report. It added that rain had not yet begun to fall when the strike happened. Jim Dean, president of Busch Gardens and Adventure Island, said it is the first time anyone has been hit by lightning at the park since it opened in 1980. "Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our employees and guests," Dean said.He added the park is constantly monitoring the weather in case of any approaching threat.Dean said their investigation has shown the lightning hit the tower that helps hold up the 700-foot-tallwater slide. The electricity traveled through the metal and the water surrounding Justin before entering his body.Ray Yeakley, spokesman for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, said it is "amazing no one else was hurt"because of the lightning strike that killed Justin. "Because there is so much water, anyone else standing in the water would have likely been badly hurt or killed too,"Yeakley said. "Everyone else must have been able to get out before it happened." Yeakley said people need to be extra cautious when severe weather is approaching, because it doesn't have to be raining for a deadly bolt to strike. "The best thing to do is get out of any water as soon as you hear any thunder or see lightning or dark storm clouds,"Yeakley said."The lightning can pass all the way through even the biggest pools. You also need to stay away until a storm has completely passed over." Yeakley added people should come down from any high elevations and avoid metal objects during a storm. As for Justin, his family laid him to rest last week. "He's in heaven now,"Frank said."He got to go to heaven for his birthday, and there is no better place to be." Trivedi, M.D.Stress is an unavoidable fact of life, especially in a school setting.Parents feel it,kids feel it and so does school staff. Here are five effective tips to help tackle the stresses in YOUR student's life.1.PLAN AHEADMark off on a calendar important dates such as major exams and report-cards and include fun days like holidays, vacations and school trips.Preparing a calendar will allow for timely and thorough preparations that go a long way in eliminating stress before it happens.2.DON'T PANIC IN STRESSFUL SITUATIONSExperience breeds confidence.A child can easily feel frustrated and overwhelmed in a challenging situation. You can help your child evaluate the problem in its proper perspective by breaking it down into smaller more achievable goals.3.LISTEN TO THE CHILDTalking it out"is the oldest remedy to stress. There is a tremendous diffusion of mental tension in just'venting.Often times, just having an adult say,"tell me more"or "I felt that way when I was your age,"will help.Having stressful feelings validated by an adult gives children a great sense of comfort and improves their odds at succeeding.4.RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS OF STRESSSome of the most common signs observed in stressed children and teens are irritability, aloofness, appearing preoccupied, doing things without thinking of the outcome, changes in sleeping or eating habits, nightmares, and a sudden decline in grades or not wanting to go to school. Some of these signs are also indicative of deeper emotional problems that may require medical treatment. If you recognize any such signs in your child, seek input from the school or teacher, guidance counselor or a school psychologist.A pediatrician can arrange for a professional consultation with a mental health professional.5.EAT RIGHT,DRINK PLENTY OF WATER,SLEEP WELL, EXERCISE AND HAVE LOTS OF FUNThere's no better or stronger protection from stress than proper nutrition, adequate rest and living a balanced, joyful life. Remember, you've never really had fun when you were stressed and you've never been stressed while you were truly having fun. Dr.Trivedi is the newest psychiatrist at Florida Medical Clinic. Ask the Doctor What is the flu? Ahighly contagious respiratory illness that occurs at any age. How is the flu spread? Through coughing, sneezing and touching surfaces. Peaks when school is in session because of close student contact. What are the symptoms? Fever temperature over 100F Headache and muscle aches Fatigue Cough and sore throat When should call my doctor? Shortness of breathe trouble breathing Pain or pressure in the chest or stomach Dehydration, such as dizziness when standing or not urinating Feelings of confusion Cannot stop vomiting Bluish or purplish skin color Fever with a rash Child who is so irritable that he does not want to be held Baby who cries with no tears Child who does not wake up easily Should I take flu medicines? Over-the-counter flu medicine treats flu symptoms and can help you feel better. But they do not make the flu go away faster. How is the flu prevented? The flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu. People who get the vaccine have a reduced likelihood of getting the flu compared to people who are not vaccinated. When should I get the flu shot? Because the flu virus changes from year to year, a new flu shot is needed every year. People should get the vaccine as soon as it becomes available to get maximum benefit.More questions? Call Dr. Burton's office at (813) 994-1286. Who's whoWhen Allison Burton was in high school, she had the opportunity to volunteer in Patient Services at University Community Hospital in Tampa. That experience and exposure to patient care was the catalyst that led to her interest and commitment to become the first medical doctor in her family and a family practitioner. Dr. Burton earned her medical degree at Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, West Indies. She completed her residency in family practice at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Newport News, Virginia. Dr. Burton moved from Maine to the Tampa Bay area with her father when she was 13 years old. She met her husband, Rob, after completing medical school and they are proud "parents" of George, a one-year-old sheltie. Dr. Burton enjoys going to the beach, snorkeling and traveling. She is a loyal Gator fan, having received her undergraduate degree at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. Burton is compassionate and always takes time to listen to her patients and their families. She believes preventative care for all ages, from infants to seniors, is one of the most important areas of medicine. Other areas of special interest for Dr. Burton are weight loss, skin cancer screenings and women's health. "He was a respected law enforcement officer, but he died of an overdose,"said Mulieri almost overcome with emotion."He was a drinker and he was taking Valium at the same time.A doctor kept writing him prescriptions for 100 pills at a time."Wilson lost a teenage nephew to the same addiction just days after hearing Nocco's request. He said he knew prescription drug abuse was a big problem, but the loss struck the first-term commissioner. "It just hit home for me,"Wilson said. The problem has also hit home for hundreds of families in Pasco during the last year. The Florida Medical Examiners Commission reports that the Pasco/Pinellas area led the state in deaths caused by prescription drugs last year. The two counties combined for 750 deaths related to prescription drug abuse,28 percent of the total fatalities in Florida. The examiners commission does not separate the deaths between the two Tampa Bay area counties."It's in our own back yards,it's in our schools,it's in the neighborhoods where we least expect it to be,"said Commissioner Ted Schrader.Mulieri and Wilson, along with the other three commssioners, unanamiously approved Noccos'request for a $1.6 million increase in the Pasco Sheriff's Office budget,up to $83.3 million, for the new fiscal year to hire 23 new empoyees. It took just 30 minutes of deliberating to come to the agreement. The new staffers will incude 10 detectives and two sergeants to create two new squads to battle drug abuse, eight nurses for the Land O'Lake Detention Center to help with inmate drug issues and three to form a new intelligenceled policing unit. Intelligence-led policing is a new concept introduced by Nocco, where the team identifies places where crimes are more likely to happen to better allocate the office's resources. The only person who advised against the increase was county budget director Michael Nurrenbrock, who questioned the long-term fiscal feasibility of adding 23 new employees to Pasco's payroll.Nurrenbrock said the only reason the county can afford to hire the new workers this year is the state manadated all government workers to contribute 3 percent of their salaries toward their own pension plans, saving Pasco $7.7 million."The reason you have this flexibility is because those pension rates have changed, and there's no guarantee of what will happen next year,"Nurrenbrock said.He added the county's revenue problems are not getting better as property values continue to drop.Nocco assured Nurrenbrock he would look into the finacial future of the sheriff's office at the start of the new year when he creates its five-year strategic plan. Pasco's new $1.1 billion budget goes into effect on Oct.1. In fact, the benefits that parks produce far outweigh their costs. And yet, parks are typically the first and easiest target of budget cutters. Creating and maintaining public parks stimulates the economy. By offering free or inexpensive recreation, parks improve public health and the quality of life for all, regardless of socioeconomic status. Parks also provide measurable environmental benefits:Trees and vegetation absorb pollutants and leave both air and water cleaner. Parks are a public trust. They belong to taxpayers, and taxpayers should have a voice in their management. As a taxpayer,I say that's wrong and it needs to stop. Our parks represent the best of our community and our traditions, and they must be protected. Tutoring programs in: Reading Math Writing Study Skills SAT/ACT Prep Homework EdgeBy Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comThose who take advantage of Pasco County's public transportation will soon see advertising as they board their buses. Pasco County Public Transportation (PCPT) recently started selling advertising space on the sides of its bus fleet. The first companies to buy a spot are Farrell Roofing and also Greg Henry Restoration, both Pasco-based firms. Both companies bought yearlong contracts for ads that fully wrap around the outside of one bus, which comes with a $5,000 per month price tag.Of that, the county will get $650 each month, according to PCPT director Mike Carroll. Steve Farrell, owner of Farrell Roofing, said the chance to advertise on PCPT buses was one his company couldn't pass up. "Most of our advertising is our vehicles," Farrell said."The bus is a little bit larger than our vehicles, and I think that will work well." Those are just the first two ads that have been installed.County commissioners have already reached agreements that will result in about $1 million in extra revenue generated from the ads during the next five years. The ads will be put on the buses by Black Jack Media,a Pasco-based company, which will pay for instillation and any maintenance. The group is also helping sell the spots for the county.Black Jack sales manager Regan Weiss said it takes about eight hours to finish adding ads to one bus. The deal calls for Black Jack to sell ads on all 36 of Pasco's buses by the end of 2012.By that time the county will start collecting more money for each wrap sold on the buses,up to $850 per vehicle per month. Weiss said his company has already gotten interest from such businesses as the Tampa Bay Storm and Nike. The county will not accept certain ads, such as those for lawyers and politicians, alcohol, tobacco, adult entertainment, pawn shops and tattoo parlors among others. Carroll said he plans on using the newly wrapped buses on some of PCPT's busiest routes to "put them in front of the most eyes possible,"such as those that travel along US 301 and US 19. Carroll said companies can also advertise on the inside of the buses,or with smaller ones on the outside. PCPT joins the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART),which already sells advertising spots on its bus fleet. For additional information on PCPT,visit portal.pascocountyfl.net. Pasco County Public Transportation buses will likely all have advertisements by the end of next year. Todaro also accepts book donations, but is not in the market right now.A man named Frank Menendez from Tampa recently donated 1,800 books. He told Todaro that he had found out about the book sale online and wanted to help a good cause. To find out the dates for the next book sale call the organization's thrift store in Zephyrhills at (813) 788-5461. She never expected to come anywhere near 1,000 points when she first picked up a shuffleboard cue. "The goal wasn't to get to 1,000 points,"Cook said."It was to get to 200 points to get into the state hall of fame, which I did (in 2003). There is the social part of it,but mostly I love to win.It certainly isn't about the money, because it costs more to travel to the tournaments than you can get if you win." Cook has played in the state masters tournament, for only the top eight men or women in the state,10 times and won it three times. She has also claimed eight national and three international championships. Two of those titles came with Earl Ball, whose 15 national titles are tied for the most all time. "We won two mixed doubles national championships in Hendersonville, N.C.,"said Ball, who lives in Betmar."We also won the only two mixed doubles state tournaments two years in a row,and no other team has ever done that.So that makes four state championships.I'd say we were very successful together. "She's dead serious and a hard worker," Ball added."She expects the very best out of herself. If she isn't playing well, everyone knows about it too.She doesn't accept mediocre." Ball said Cook has benefited from playing in so many mixed doubles events. "She comes and plays with and against men often,so her game is tailored to a man's style of play,"Ball said. Ball explained women shuffleboard players tend to focus on hitting their opponent's discus out of the way.Men usually employ several game plans to win, such as setting up blocks or working to put people in the kitchen, the section of the court that deducts 10 points from their score. "That means she has a lot of different ways to win when she plays against women,"Ball said."They don't know what to do when she has more tricks up her sleeve." Cook is back on the fast track towardJOAN COOK,from page 1 1,000 points, but personal heartbreak almost derailed her chance. Her husband Richard Cook died in 2009. "That was the saddest thing that could have happened to me because he was my biggest supporter,"Cook said."I took a year off after that,or I probably would have already had the 1,000 points." Cook said she and her husband played shuffleboard a lot. "I actually got him into it,"Cook said with a laugh."I had to teach him how to play.We played as a team together in amateurs and never won anything. He was the typical man doing whatever he wanted on the court.I'd get so mad at him sometimes because we'd have a match won,and then he'd do whatever he wanted, and we'd lose it in the end.He drove me nuts, but as soon as we were off the court,we'd love each other again." Once Cook gets to 1,000 points she said her focus will shift toward helping others improve their own shuffleboard game. "Once I get the 1,000 points,I'll help people get into the hall of fame,"Cook said. "I'll team with some of those who are close and try to help them win enough points to make it." Earl Ball, left, and Joan Cook have won two national championships as a mixed doubles team. Both won conference, district and regional championships and entered the Class 3A state meet with high expectations of finishing better than any other Bulls team in the school's history. Both teams had,by their standards, disappointing finishes in the final race of year, with the boys taking 10th and the girls finishing 13th,giving both motivation to improve in 2011.In addition, both programs lost four of their top-seven runners to graduation, creating a need for new leaders to step up. That similar road toward the 2011 season has created a common motto for the Bulls squads. "Both of our teams'shirts say Prove It' because on both sides, the boys and the girls,we lost some of our top runners,"said girls coach Don Howard."My girls say they're going to continue the tradition. Chris'boys say the same thing. They're out to prove it to themselves and everyone else. We use that target as our motivation to continue to do well.I tell the girls there are people training to beat you specifically,so you need to always work to improve." The girls lost Ariel Grey,Marissa Tomei, Kelsey Sturman and Taylor Hixson to graduation. The squad does return Nikita Shah, Chelse Davis and Elise Cedre, and Howard plans on using their experience to help get the team back to a championship level. "Those three girls are going to be our leaders this year, but the key for us is are those other kids going to step up,"Howard said."All three of those girls have it upon them to help pull the next bunch up.To run with them and practice and show them the things to do to get girls who have never run under 22 minutes to get their times down." Howard said Shah,a senior,is their No.1 runner, but the junior never looks at it as if she is separate from her teammates. "Cross country is a team effort and it's fun to be on a team,"said Shah, whose personal record (PR) in a 5-kilometer race is 18:59."I'm excited about this season.I think myself and a lot of the girls are ready to stay at the top.We lost some good runners, but I know our returning runners have been working very hard and have already improved their times.I think we can regain our titles we got last year." The boys lost Josh Reilly,Ryan Pulsifer, Ian Cassette and Logan Selzer to graduation, but coach Chris Loth said he has the right kids to help fill those holes. "We have a good group of kids step up as leaders,"Loth said."As far as talent,we have 38 kids on the team to choose from. There are available slots and everyone is motivated to fill them. They want to live up to the expectations that they've created. That's the goal.Whether or not it happens we'll have to see." One of the kids Loth will lean on for his times is senior Sam Hippely, whose PR in a 5K is 16:21. "Losing four seniors from last year is going to be tough for us,but I think our Nos.4-9 spots are really good and competitive,"Hippely said."They're all trying very hard and it pushes all of us to do better. It'll be interesting to see where those spots go." The boys will also be led by junior Ermias Bireda, whose PR is 16:26.Bireda said he has been working to get his core stronger during the summer, along with regular running with the squad. "I'll do whatever I can to get better at running,"Bireda said."I know that if you have a strong core you can go further at top speed." Loth has also changed his training regime based on what he learned in 2010."We had a disappointing day at states last year and I've adjusted a couple things because of that,"Loth said."We started a little bit later in hopes that we won't peak too early, which I think we did last year.Keep them fresh.I'm going to adjust things later in the year too."Both Bulls programs have become constants at the top of conference, district and regional meet leader boards during the last few years, making them a target for other programs to shoot for. "We're glad that other teams respect our program,"Loth said."After realignment we're in a more competitive district and region than we've ever been in teams like Land O'Lakes,Steinbrenner,Chamberlain and a couple other squads so we're going to have to push ourselves just to get to a state meet.If we have a bad day it could be over." All stats as recorded by the Florida High School Athletic Association.Bulls poised to lead cross country pack Bulls junior cross country runner Ermias Bireda has been putting a bigger emphasis on core training during the summer. (Photos by Kyle LoJacono)Zephyrhills duo claim doubles crownBy Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comZephyrhills residents Gus Bondi and Walt Shine expected to do well at the Eastern National Shuffleboard Doubles Championship, and they went out and showed why their city is known for the game. "I was hoping, but you know with shuffleboard it's a game of mistakes and if someone makes a mistake you can be pretty well eaten up fast,"Shine said."I had a good partner in Gus Bondi, and I knew if we played well we had a pretty good chance." The final match went to a decisive third game, which became a back-and-forth contest.Bondi and Shine took a big lead of nearly 40 points, but the opposition managed to tie things up.The Zephyrhills duo finally broke through to win the championship on Sept.2. The two have played as a team a few times before, but never at a national tournament.Despite the lack of experience together, they managed to go 4-0 in the event en route to winning the title in Hendersonville,N.C. "Gus is very good to play with,"said Shine, who started playing in 1998."He knows if I make a mistake I didn't do it on purpose, and I know that too. We're all trying to play our best and we all make mistakes. That's his attitude, and it's easy to play with someone like that.I would definitely play with him again." Bondi echoed Shine's sentiment. "I made mistakes and he didn't say anything;he made mistakes and I didn't say anything,"said Bondi, who picked up the sport 10 years ago."It takes two to win a tournament.Everybody makes mistakes, but whoever makes the fewest mistakes and comes back from their mistakes wins." Bondi has played in Hendersonville about five times before, but it was Shine's first time on those courts. "I had a wonderful time,"Shine said."I play to have fun,so that makes me more relaxed and makes it more enjoyable. It's a game,so you're going to win and lose, but certainly I want to be the one who wins.If I don't,it's only a game." It is the second national title for each of the east Pasco County residents.Shine won the Summer National Championship Any Doubles title at Betmar in Zephyrhills in June.Bondi claimed his first crown at the Eastern Nationals in 2005. Bondi and Shine were not the only Zephyrhills residents near the top at the event.Buddy Allen came in third in the men's singles tournament.Bondi said that speaks to the level of play in east Pasco. "Zephyrhills in my opinion is the shuffleboard capital of the world,"Bondi said. "There are a lot of good shufflers, and wherever they go there is always a fair representation on the leader board." Bondi and Shine are now in Arizona playing in the East West Goodwill Games.Bondi and Shine bring home Eastern National title Zephyrhills resident Walt Shine won his second career national championship at Hendersonville, N.C. By Eugenio Torrensetorrens@cnewspubs.comPasco showed its opponents it can score in a multitude of ways, even if its offense is on the sidelines. The Pirates (3-0) used a 43-point first half to beat Wiregrass Ranch 53-0 at home on Sept.16.Pasco has outscored the opposition 92-6 during its past two games. "Our whole team had a great game,"said junior running back Janarion Grant, who returned the opening kickoff 84 yards to get the Pirates on the scoreboard before the offense even took the field. "When we get the ball,I'm usually amped to return the punt well the kickoff,"Grant said."Really,I never got it last year because everybody knew if I get it,I'll do something with it." Grant also hauled in five receptions for 144 yards and two touchdowns. The Bulls, who were missing starters quarterback Jake Day and running back Jamie Barone because of concussions sustained in Week 1,were unable to generate much offense.Linebacker and wide receiver Joe Irizarry also sat out because of concussion-like symptoms, though Wiregrass Ranch coach Jeremy Shobe said he was not diagnosed with a concussion. Wiregrass Ranch (0-3) had many young and inexperienced players starting at multiple positions. "We probably have five kids or so that played varsity football (last year) and it shows,"Shobe said."We make a lot of young mistakes. In open field,we haven't seen speed like that, and we can't simulate that in practice.Fortunately, this is probably the type of speed we'll see a few games this year, but not every week."After a quick three and out and a nine-yard punt from the Bulls on their opening position, Pasco took over on offense from the Bulls 24. Pirates quarterback Jacob Guy found wide receiver Trey Dudley-Giles for Pasco's second touchdown. It was the first of three consecutive touchdown receptions for Dudley-Giles, whose four grabs tallied 61 yards.Wiregrass Ranch fumbled the ball after getting a first down on its next drive, and again handed the Pirates prime field position. The Pirates marched down the short field and Guy found Dudley-Giles in the end zone on a lob pass from the 1-yard line.Guy found Dudley-Giles again on Pasco's next possession, this time from 27 yards out.Not to be left out,Grant had two more touchdown catches, one for 53 and another for 45 yards to finish with three scoring grabs."Janarion and Trey are just dynamic,"said Pasco coach Tom McHugh."Whenever they get their hands on the ball,I like to watch it."Wiregrass Ranch's offense continued to stall against the Pirates defense. The Bulls didn't get the ball into opposing territory until 8:31 left in the second quarter, courtesy of a turnover on downs. The Bulls sniffed the end zone thanks to a 32-yard tipped completion by athlete Ryan Shea from quarterback Ricky Weisbrodt, but Wiregrass Ranch lost a fumble from 7 yards out.It was the only series all game the Wesley Chapel squad played in Pirates'territory.Guy and Co.went into half with a 43-0 lead. The senior signal caller was taken out in the second half, but still put up 207 yards and five touchdowns on 10-of-15 passing.Of the 10 completions, nine went to Grant and Dudley-Giles. "Both of them (Grant and Dudley-Giles) catch the ball maybe two yards down the field, and any time they catch it,they can go for 50 (yards),"Guy said."That just makes my job a lot easier." Pasco running back David Emmanuel had a 46-yard run for the Pirates sole touchdown of the second half.Kicker Carson Brock booted a 39-yard field goal, his second of the night, for the game's final points. Pasco travels district rival Gulf on Friday, Sept.23.Wiregrass Ranch will host its first district game against Gaither the same night. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. HOMES FOR SALENO NEIGHBORSin back. 1997 3/2 dble wide on 2.3 wooded acres off SR 54 exit from I75.
