TheLAKER Zephyrhills/Dade City EditionZephyrhills reviews budget, creates economic task forceThe Zephyrhills City council had its first reading of the budget for the 201112 fiscal year on Monday,Sept.12. According to city manager James Drumm, the citys budget that would go into effect on Oct.1 is $47.5 million. Because it was the first reading, changes could happen to the total budget.Drumm said any changes brought up to the budgetwhich is the same as last fiscal years budget would most likely apply to the division of funds versus the total sum. In all,15 positions were eliminated. Twelve of those jobs were full time and the remaining three were part time. The budget did allow for the creation of two new jobs, one full time and one part time. The full-time position is for a third airport maintenance worker, whereas the part-time job, which was vacant, was for a police department records clerk. This was originally a full-time job, but was scaled down to part time. Also noteworthy was the creation of an economic development task force. The task force, which would tentatively be comprised of nine members with two alternates, would be active for six months, set to end on April 4. Drumm said the task force is a temporary board that comes together to study an issue. Its like a problem-solving board,he said.If we have a problem,we want you to work together, and were going to bring it in to the Chamber of Commerce, the city, business owners in the city.We try to bring them all together to say what can we do to bring in economic development and make it easier for the businesses, existing ones and for new ones. In April, the task force will bring a plan to the council to propose how to bring about that economic development. The task force has yet to assign its members, but membership will be comprised of local citizens with Zephyrhills Mayor Cliff McDuffie being the chair of the force. Its proposed all other members be appointed at the Sept.26 council meeting. The task force will make recommendations to the city council on how to identify needed businesses and industries and how to recruit them. You dont want the board to continue on and on,because they could study the issues to death,Drumm said. The board was something the city council had anticipated. Its something thats already kind of existed, but we were concerned about some of the discussions that were occurring, said council president Jodi Wilkeson. This task force is to come together to help us define what are going to be the goals of the city.We already kind of know, but we want them to have stakeholders, city, business owners, and people like that to give us their input. The council also continued its plans to annex approximately 42 acres of property to be included within the cityPasco sheriff asks for help in war on drugsWhen Chris Nocco became the Pasco sheriff in May he stressed a desire to stamp out illegal prescription drug use within the county. Nocco took his fight to the county commission, asking for $1.6 million in next years budget to hire 23 new employees, including 12 to create two new squads to battle prescription drug abuse and eight nurses for the Land OLake Detention Center to help with inmate drug issues. The remaining three new staffers would be analysts for a new program Nocco calls intelligence-led policing. Its a whole new way of looking at police work,Nocco said of the new program.Itll be a team that works to find potential problem areas so we can concentrate our efforts in those areas. That way we are making the best use of our resources. Noccos request comes less than a month after the Florida Medical Examiners Commission revealed that the Pasco/Pinellas area led the state in deaths caused by prescription drugs. Of the 2,710 deaths attributed to prescription drug abuse in 2010,750 were from Pasco/Pinellas,or about 28 percent of the total fatalities. The examiners commission does not separate the deaths between the two Tampa Bay area counties. Hillsborough County also had a high number of prescription drug deaths at 400.Hillsborough has 1.2 million residents, according to U.S.Census data, just 200,000 fewer than the 1.4 million people combined in Pasco and Pinellas. Pasco/Pinellas also led the state in deaths related to the six most lethal prescription drugs, which include alprazolam or Xanax, diazepam or Valium, hydrocodone or Vicodin, methadone, morphine and oxycodone, according to the examiners commissions report. Nocco said the new employees are needed because Pasco is in a war right now with prescription pills. We needed something to attack this war. Nocco received support at the commissioners meeting from state Sen.Mike Fasano,R-New Port Richey, who has been outspoken in his support of stepping up the fight against prescription drug use.He has sponsored anti-pill mill laws in the state Legislature. Weve taken baby steps in Tallahassee,Fasano said. But you can take a giant leap right now in approving what hes requesting. The commissioners agreed to explore giving Nocco the increase to help fight that war. We probably all know somebody who has been affected by these drugs, said Commission Chairwoman Ann Hildebrand. However,Commissioner Ted Schrader M.J.Price was getting ready to go on a morning bike ride with a girlfriend on Sept. 11,2001.While her friend was making a protein shake,Price cocked her head to see what was on TV. It was like a Lifetime movie, she said. She couldnt believe the image of the plumes of smoke billowing from the World Trade Center. To this day,she cant remember if she went on that bike ride. Price is the creator and organizer of the 9/11 memorial event at Zephyr Park. She said there has been an event every single year starting in 2002. The event is about memorializing those who passed away and those who protect our freedom, said Price, who started the afternoon dressed as the Statue of Liberty. Over the last decade,Price has helped organize more than 120 free community events in Zephyrhills. This one was no different.Price said the first few memorial events following the Sept. 11,2001 attacks were more serious. This year she designed it for a more family friendly atmosphere with outdoor games, music and indoor expos. If you dont improve the quality of your community, then no one will,Price said. The event also featured speeches from state Legislature member Rep.Will Weatherford,R-Wesley Chapel, and Congressman Rep.Rich Nugent,R-Brooksville.Doc Riley,a Vietnam War veteran and current member of the Shriners, had his custom 1998 Honda Valkyrie motorcycle on display at the event.Originally named The Red Dragon because dragonwas one of the conceptual names tossed around when the bike was making its debut, the motorcycle is full of custom-made parts, including a gattling-gun exhaust and Cadillac taillights and turn signals. Its truly one of a kind,he said. Riley, who had 15 flags on display including flags from various military branches and two U.S.flags specifically for the 9/11 event, said the attacks 10 years ago had a great significance. A former GTE and Verizon employee,he was working at a cell tower in the middle of a cow pasture when he heard on the radio the World Trade Center had been struck. He feels people have become too consumed with their personal lives to fully appreciate their neighbors. Every year since then, its been downgraded,he said.People think were secure,it could happen today. Also at the event was the Pasco Sheriffs Mounted Posse police officers and volunteers on horseback. Kim Alexander had recently graduated from high school when the attacks happened. Now she is 29 and is a member of the mounted posse, along with Jake, her 7-year-old Percheron draft Zephyr Park hosts 9/11 remembrance

One way to reduce this chore is to minimize turf areas down to what is practical for the occasional game of tag or crochet. Once established, groundcovers require little-to-no additional fertilizer and are typically drought tolerant.Weeds have a very hard time competing when groundcovers connect.Groundcovers cover a lot of territory with a minimum of plants,so select hardy ones to minimize the number that need to be replaced from year to year. Perennial peanut is a colorful favorite. Grown by farmers as a forage crop, homeowners will enjoy the bright yellow flowers.Quite adaptable in a large bed with little organic matter, hot afternoon sun and no supplemental irrigation, perennial peanut will out-compete turf. Perennial peanut are somewhat aggressive and are best grown in beds that are bounded by a hardscape such as a sidewalk. There is a stand of perennial peanut along US 301 in downtown Dade City. This ever-blooming display will cause any good gardener to want to locate the nearest retail source. Powderpuff mimosa is another adaptable groundcover. In addition to being a Florida native, mimosa will completely cover an area in short order.Pink puffball flowers sit atop the foliage in a showy display from summer through fall. While winter may nip it back a bit, mimosa comes on strong when temperatures warm in the spring. You cant beat ajuga in partial sun sites. Once established, this purple-leaved groundcover is very drought tolerant and will produce a nice small blue/purple flower held above the foliage.Although landscapes irrigated with reclaimed water will want to make another selection due to low salt tolerance. For those living in a deed-restricted community that specifies the amount of traditional lawn you must maintain, check with your rules to assure compliance or learn of an appeals process. Replacing a portion of the lawn will save time from maintenance and will add interest to most any landscape.Consider the many attractive low maintenance ground covers that will continue to add curb appeal while reducing the lawnmowing burden. CnewsPubs.com / 813-909-2800 The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is revising nutritional labels to help people more easily make decisions about what they eat. FDA Deputy Commissioner Michael Taylor said the new labeling system will not only change the information presented to be more useful for consumers, but it will also create more realistic serving sizes. The FDAs new labeling system will also put a bigger emphasis on calories, while reducing the prominence of the daily percent value numbers for elements like carbohydrates, fats and sodium. Taylor said the department has been working with doctors, nutritionists and every-day people since 2003 to find the best way to present information about food. The goal is to help stem the tide of obesity in this country. Theres no question obesity is a central public health concern that the nutrition facts panel can play a role in,Taylor said. Its obviously not a magic wand, but it can be an informative tool. Taylor said the new labeling system could be put in place as early as the years end,but more likely will be unveiled sometime in the first half of 2012.Emily Mark, one of three dietitians with Pasco County Schools Food and Nutrition Services Department, said the changes will help children make better choices as well. I think the best change would be the serving size,Mark said. Some of the time serving sizes of food are nowhere near the amount the average person eats. Two popular sweet treats that will see their serving sizes change are soda and ice cream.Currently, the serving size for ice cream is a half cup, while 20-ounce soda bottles contain 2.5 servings of the carbonated drink.Id say that most people drink those soda bottles by themselves and people who eat ice cream have a lot more than a half cup of ice cream,Mark said. The problem is they look at the label and see the number of calories and assume thats how many calories theyve eaten. It gets people into trouble.Taylor said other servings for food commonly eaten in one sitting by a single person, such as a can of soup, will also be altered. The current food labels were designed about 20 years ago as a way to give a glance at what nutritional information is in food. Taylor said they were not meant to help people manage their weight, but the FDA has learned that is exactly what many people use them for. Taylor said the new labels will allow people to better determine if food is healthy for them based on their own health situation. For more information on the FDAs food labeling system, visit www.fda.gov.FDA revamps food labeling

813-909-2800 / CnewsPubs.com The Pasco football team defeated Land OLakes for the fifth consecutive season, the longest winning streak in the 36-year rivalry. The Pirates (2-0) took a 7-6 halftime lead against Land OLakes (1-1),but the Dade City squad put up 32 points in the second half to win 39-6 as the injury depleted Gators seemed to wear down. Land OLakes has always been a good team, said Pasco coach Tom McHugh.Ive been doing this for a long time and theyve always been a very good team. The Gators were without five starters to begin the home contest on Sept.9;four because of injury and defensive back Jordan Michelson was out for off-the-field reasons. Tight end Kent Taylor broke his left hand in Land OLakeskickoff classic against Anclote, and linebacker Shadow Williams broke his left hand against Zephyrhills on Sept.2.Center John Kranendonk and safety Darin Patmon were also hurt against the Bulldogs, with a cracked sternum and injured knee respectively. The injury bug continued to bite the Gators against Pasco, as wide receiver Ricky Boyles left the game after halftime with a concussion. Gators coach Brian Wachtel did not use losing six starters as an excuse. Pascos a good football team,Wachtel said.In the second half of the game they made some big plays. Our kids fought hard. Im so proud of our kids for everything that they did out there tonight, and man it was exciting at half 7-6.Were just going to have to go back and evaluate the film and move forward. The game started promising for the Gators,as they forced a fumble on the Pirates second play from scrimmage, but Land OLakes was unable to come away with any points. Pasco got on the board first when quarterback Jacob Guy hit running back Janarion Grant for a 61-yard touchdown pass with 10:29 left in the second quarter. The Gators answered with 1:15 left before halftime when quarterback Ryan Bird found wide receiver Nico Watts for a 59-yard strike. The Pirates came out from halftime on fire, scoring touchdowns on their first four drives to take a commanding 32-6 lead.Coach had a good speech at halftime, said Pasco running back David Emmanuel. We were a little bit down because it was a very close game. Normally we would be ahead by a mile, but he told us the right things and we came out and did what we had to do.Pasco started running the ball more with the 6-foot,175-pound Emmanuel in the second half to take advantage of the short-handed Gators. Our offensive coordinator found a weakness in their line, and we capitalized on it and made big plays,Emmanuel said. Emmanuel finished with 221 rushing yards and three touchdowns.Grant had three scores of his own,all receiving. Emmanuel said of sharing a backfield with Grant,Hes like my brother.Theres competition between us every game.He normally comes out on top first, but I guess I tied it up in the end tonight. Emmanuel had to miss the Piratesfirst regular season game with a shoulder injury, but the junior showed no lingering effects against the Gators. David runs the ball hard,McHugh said. If you dont bring everything you have to tackle David, then it doesnt work. Guy finished 14-of-23 for 232 yards and three touchdowns.Wide receiver Trey Dudley-Giles had four catches for 84 yards and added another 28 on kick returns. The Land OLakes defense did cause some problems for the Pirates, recording six sacks for -29 yards. Bird went 12-for-23 for 192 yards with one touchdown and an interception. The Gators signal caller added another 40 rushing yards. The victory increased Pascos lead in the all-time series against Land OLakes to 2016.The Pirates host Wiregrass Ranch on Friday,Sept.16 at 7:30 p.m.The Gators have a bye next week, and then host district rival Hernando on Friday,Sept.23 at 7:30 p.m. 2011 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL STANDINGSClass 7A-District 7 Gaither 1-1 (0-0) Steinbrenner 1-1 (0-0) Tampa Bay Tech 1-1 (0-0) Chamberlain 0-1 (0-0) Freedom 0-2 (0-0) Wiregrass Ranch 0-2 (0-0) Class 6A-District 6 Mitchell 2-0 (0-0) River Ridge 2-0 (0-0) Sunlake 2-0 (0-0) Hernando 1-1 (0-0) Land O Lakes 1-1 (0-0) Nature Coast 1-1 (0-0) Springstead 1-1 (0-0) Central 0-2 (0-0) Class 5A-District 6 Pasco 2-0 (0-0) Wesley Chapel 2-0 (0-0) Fivay 1-1 (0-0) Hudson 0-1 (0-0) Anclote 0-2 (0-0) Gulf 0-2 (0-0) Ridgewood 0-2 (0-0) Zephyrhills 0-2 (0-0) Pasco makes it five straight against Land O LakesThunder win Labor Day tournamentThe West Florida Thunder baseball team won the USSSA 5-Tool Showcase Tournament in Oldsmar during the Labor Day weekend. The majority of those players from that Florida Christian Association of Private and Parochial Schools (FCAPPS) championship team graduated, while others choose to play on public school squads like Zephyrhills or Pasco. However, the 2011 Warriors season will go on,but as a middle school squad. Zephyrhills Christian will compete in the FCAPPS middle school division. The goal is to build the program back up to the high school level as the Warriors get older, stronger and more experienced. Its fun because we get to teach football to a lot of kids who are new to the game, said Zephyrhills Christian coach and principal Mike Smith. Here its a lot more about fundamentals. We cant do a lot of things like we did last year, but well get to build on this new foundation. Mike has found a few more differences teaching sixth and seventh graders from the juniors and seniors. The first day I had four kids crying because they didnt want to run because it was hot, which is very different from the high school kids, but that has changed and by the fourth practice they were all ready to go, Mike said. The Warriors will have a familiar name at quarterback to start the year sixthgrader Javan Smith.Javan is Mikes youngest son and the brother of Mikey Smith, who was Zephyrhills Christians signal caller in 2010.Javan had a front-row seat to the Warriors 2010 perfect season. I saw every game,Javan said.I was the announcer. It was a great experience. We have the talent to do a lot here, but were still working on some things. One of the biggest players on the squad is ninth-grader Devon Grannis,an offensive lineman. He relishes the chance to build the program to that championship level. I feel honored to help build the program back,Grannis said.Maybe next year we can get back to that state final. Another player who Mike predicts will help return the Warriors to greatness is seventh-grader Nevada Taylor,a linebacker and running back. I really wanted to play, and this team has great potential,Taylor said.Weve got a great coach who has helped us come a long way in a short time. Taylor said he looks up to Josh Roberts, who was the Warriors running back last year. The story is similar with seventh-grade linebacker Josh Wilcox, who looks up to Dale Smith Jr.,last years starting linebacker. Watching (Dale) taught me how to be a linebacker,Wilcox said.Hes a great player. Dale graduated last year, while Roberts and Mikey decided to be home schooled and play on the Zephyrhills football team this season. Mikey and Josh both thought it was the right time to try and play with the public school,Mike said. They both want to play in college and wanted a chance to get a little more attention. Mikey is still around the program on a daily basis. He helps coach the offense during the teams practices, held during the students normal physical education class in the afternoon. The timing allows the former Warriors quarterback to help the program before leaving for Zephyrhills practice. It seems coaching runs in the Smith family. I love the sport, but I love helping the kids and impacting their life,Mike said.I believe with all my heart that football kept me in school.I believe it kept me away from drugs and alcohol. Those things were there, but I knew if I did those things I wouldnt be able to play on Friday night.I try and translate everything we do into life for these kids,Mike continued. When things are difficult,I tell them lots of things in life will be difficult. But at the end of the day you dont quit because things are difficult. You get up on your feet and keep fighting.I want to it be an impact on their life spiritually and mentally for years after they take off the pads for the last time. The Warriors play at Hernando Christian on Thursday,Sept.15 at 4 p.m.They will close the season at home against Jacksonville Eastland Christian on Thursday, Oct.20 at 7 p.m. Warriors football rosterNo.2 Johnny Casarez No.3 Josh Wilcox No.4 Javan Smith No.7 Deshawn White No.8 Austin Arrington No.25 Robert Keldie No.40 Josh Kinney No.48 Nevada Taylor No.53 Caleb Wilcox No.60 Zechariah Mitchell No.65 Devon Grannis No.77 Jarod Clemons No.80 Mike Sheffler No.99 P.J.SeekinsZephyrhills Christian football builds anew

Dr. Baker is accepting new patients at 6748 Gall Blvd, Zephyrhills To make an appointment, please call 813-782-1200 pointed out that the new workerssalaries would be funded on the back of a lot of the employees. The arguments for and against adding new workers to the Pasco Sheriffs Office have been a constant during the last year. Bob White, who was Noccos predecessor before he retired in April, asked for a $4 million increase in the current budget for the sheriffs office to in part hire 28 new deputies.White fought for months before eventually settling on an additional $945,000 to pay for increasing benefits costs. No new workers were hired. Nocco jokingly said he was looking for an olive branchon his way to the commissioners meeting. There may have been contention in thepast, but I hope to start a new day,Nocco said. Nocco said the new workers he is requesting for intelligence-led policing differs from what White wanted. He said the new team would be like a special operations group. Whites request was meant to simply beef up the number of deputies in areas of west Pasco.Nocco is asking for the increase to come from the $4.7 million his office saved from the current fiscal budget. The reductions came mainly because the Legislature passed a new requirement that all state workers must contribute 3 percent of their salaries to their pension plans. Commissioners are scheduled to have two more public meetings before voting on the budget on Sept.20,including if they will officially agree to Noccos request. The new budget year begins Oct.1. boundaries. The land is needed for expansion of the airport runway.Currently, the property consists of vacant pasture and borrow pits. The city had always had in their big-picture plan to purchase this property,Wilkeson said.Acme Development Corporation owned the land, but Zephyrhills bought the northern 17.5 acres of the property. We all knew this was coming and supported it,Wilkeson said. The other piece, estimated to be 24.5 acres, will be annexed and purchased at a later date. The other one we didnt purchase but we made a plan to do that in the future to extend our runway to the airport,Drumm said. But we made an agreement that we would want them to annex it in now into the citys jurisdiction so when its ready to be bought, well already have put the zoning (on it). Currently the area is in county zoning, but once its bought,it can be changed to city zoning. CnewsPubs.com / 813-909-2800 horse. Its pretty meaningful,Alexander said about the picnic.I didnt know what to expect.I just wanted to show my support. John Bushell, who was a police officer in Tampa for 30 years and has been with the mounted posse for eight years, said he was with current Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi eating breakfast at a Village Inn when they heard about the attacks. It doesnt seem like it was 10 years ago, he said. Congressman Nugent, who according to Price was an unexpected guest, said as much as the victims of the Sept.11,2001 attacks needed to be remembered, recognition also needed to be heaped on first responders, including the firefighters. They ran into a burning building as people were running out,Nugent said.It is a thankless job. Weatherford, who spoke shortly after Nugent, called first responders his heroes. He also praised citizens like Todd Beamer aboard United Airlines flight 93,which crashed near Shanksville,Penn. It seems like Sept.11,2001 is still fresh in our minds,Weatherford said.He noted how it could be hard to remember what you ate for breakfast,or what you did last week. But he said its crystal clear what you were doing when you heard about the attacks. You cant change what happened. You cant change that our lives will never be the same since that day. And he acknowledged that while the country may have its differences over different economic policies or party lines, there are things people dont argue over because they dont have to. TheLAKER SEPTEMBER 14,2011 FREE Zephyrhills/Dade City EditionZephyrhills reviews budget, creates economic task forceBy Eugenio Torrensetorrens@cnewspubs.comThe Zephyrhills City council had its first reading of the budget for the 201112 fiscal year on Monday,Sept.12. According to city manager James Drumm, the city's budget that would go into effect on Oct.1 is $47.5 million. Because it was the first reading, changes could happen to the total budget.Drumm said any changes brought up to the budgetwhich is the same as last fiscal year's budget would most likely apply to the division of funds versus the total sum. "It's like a problem-solving board,"he said."If we have a problem,we want you to work together, and we're going to bring it in to the Chamber of Commerce, the city, business owners in the city.We try to bring them all together to say what can we do to bring in economic development and make it easier for the businesses, existing ones and for new ones." In April, the task force will bring a plan to the council to propose how to bring about that economic development. The task force has yet to assign its members, but membership will be comprised of local citizens with Zephyrhills Mayor Cliff McDuffie being the chair of the force. It's proposed all other members be appointed at the Sept.26 council meeting. The task force will make recommendations to the city council on how to identify needed businesses and industries and how to recruit them. "You don't want the board to continue on and on,because they could study the issues to death,"Drumm said. The board was something the city council had anticipated. "It's something that's already kind of existed, but we were concerned about some of the discussions that were occurring,"said council president Jodi Wilkeson."This task force is to come together to help us define what are going to be the goals of the city.We already kind of know, but we want them to have stakeholders, city, business owners, and people like that to give us their input." The council also continued its plans to annex approximately 42 acres of property to be included within the cityPasco sheriff asks for help in war on drugsBy Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comWhen Chris Nocco became the Pasco sheriff in May he stressed a desire to stamp out illegal prescription drug use within the county. Nocco took his fight to the county commission, asking for $1.6 million in next year's budget to hire 23 new employees, including 12 to create two new squads to battle prescription drug abuse and eight nurses for the Land O'Lake Detention Center to help with inmate drug issues. The remaining three new staffers would be analysts for a new program Nocco calls intelligence-led policing. "It's a whole new way of looking at police work,"Nocco said of the new program."It'll be a team that works to find potential problem areas so we can concentrate our efforts in those areas. That way we are making the best use of our resources." Nocco's request comes less than a month after the Florida Medical Examiners Commission revealed that the Pasco/Pinellas area led the state in deaths caused by prescription drugs. Pasco/Pinellas also led the state in deaths related to the six most lethal prescription drugs, which include alprazolam or Xanax, diazepam or Valium, hydrocodone or Vicodin, methadone, morphine and oxycodone, according to the examiners commission's report. Nocco said the new employees are needed because Pasco is "in a war right now with prescription pills. We needed something to attack this war." Nocco received support at the commissioners meeting from state Sen.Mike Fasano,R-New Port Richey, who has been outspoken in his support of stepping up the fight against prescription drug use.He has sponsored anti-pill mill laws in the state Legislature. "We've taken baby steps in Tallahassee,"Fasano said."But you can take a giant leap right now in approving what he's requesting." The commissioners agreed to explore giving Nocco the increase to help fight that war. "We probably all know somebody who has been affected by these drugs," said Commission Chairwoman Ann Hildebrand. However,Commissioner Ted Schrader Chris NoccoSee DRUGS,page17 By Eugenio Torrensetorrens@cnewspubs.comM.J.Price was getting ready to go on a morning bike ride with a girlfriend on Sept. 11,2001.While her friend was making a protein shake,Price cocked her head to see what was on TV. "It was like a Lifetime movie,"she said. She couldn't believe the image of the plumes of smoke billowing from the World Trade Center. To this day,she can't remember if she went on that bike ride. Price is the creator and organizer of the 9/11 memorial event at Zephyr Park. She said there has been an event every single year starting in 2002. "The event is about memorializing those who passed away and those who protect our freedom,"said Price, who started the afternoon dressed as the Statue of Liberty. "If you don't improve the quality of your community, then no one will,"Price said. The event also featured speeches from state Legislature member Rep.Will Weatherford,R-Wesley Chapel, and Congressman Rep.Rich Nugent,R-Brooksville.Doc Riley,a Vietnam War veteran and current member of the Shriners, had his custom 1998 Honda Valkyrie motorcycle on display at the event.Originally named The Red Dragon because "dragon"was one of the conceptual names tossed around when the bike was making its debut, the motorcycle is full of custom-made parts, including a gattling-gun exhaust and Cadillac taillights and turn signals. "It's truly one of a kind,"he said. Riley, who had 15 flags on display including flags from various military branches and two U.S.flags specifically for the 9/11 event, said the attacks 10 years ago had a "great significance." A former GTE and Verizon employee,he was working at a cell tower in the middle of a cow pasture when he heard on the radio the World Trade Center had been struck. He feels people have become too consumed with their personal lives to fully appreciate their neighbors. "Every year since then,it's been downgraded,"he said."People think we're secure,it could happen today." Also at the event was the Pasco Sheriff's Mounted Posse police officers and volunteers on horseback. Lutz,FL 33548 813-229-7946 (SWIM) www.sealswimschool.com Items include Holiday Ornaments & Decorations, Name Brand Swimsuits and Unique Gifts.By B.J.JarvisPasco Extension Horticulture AgentThe summer of 2011 has been brutal to area landscapes.High heat alternating with downpours has made it hard to keep up with lawn mowing.Quick-growing lawns need to be cut every 4-5 days, but life's schedule only allows for once-per-week mowing. You can't beat ajuga in partial sun sites. NATURE NOTES BJ Jarvis is Horticulture Agent and Director for Pasco Cooperative Extension,a partnership between the County and the University of Florida / IFAS.For more information about groundcovers or other gardening questions,visit:pasco.ifas.ufl.edu/gardening or email at bjjarvis@ufl.edu. CnewsPubs.com / 813-909-2800 THE LAKER September 14,2011 9 By Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comThe Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is revising nutritional labels to help people more easily make decisions about what they eat. FDA Deputy Commissioner Michael Taylor said the new labeling system will not only change the information presented to be more useful for consumers, but it will also create more realistic serving sizes. The FDA's new labeling system will also put a bigger emphasis on calories, while reducing the prominence of the daily percent value numbers for elements like carbohydrates, fats and sodium. Taylor said the department has been working with doctors, nutritionists and every-day people since 2003 to find the best way to present information about food. The goal is to help stem the tide of obesity in this country. "There's no question obesity is a central public health concern that the nutrition facts panel can play a role in,"Taylor said."It's obviously not a magic wand, but it can be an informative tool." Taylor said the new labeling system could be put in place as early as the year's end,but more likely will be unveiled sometime in the first half of 2012.Emily Mark, one of three dietitians with Pasco County School's Food and Nutrition Services Department, said the changes will help children make better choices as well. "I think the best change would be the serving size,"Mark said."Some of the time serving sizes of food are nowhere near the amount the average person eats." Two popular sweet treats that will see their serving sizes change are soda and ice cream.Currently, the serving size for ice cream is a half cup, while 20-ounce soda bottles contain 2.5 servings of the carbonated drink."I'd say that most people drink those soda bottles by themselves and people who eat ice cream have a lot more than a half cup of ice cream,"Mark said."The problem is they look at the label and see the number of calories and assume that's how many calories they've eaten. It gets people into trouble."Taylor said other servings for food commonly eaten in one sitting by a single person, such as a can of soup, will also be altered. For more information on the FDA's food labeling system, visit www.fda.gov.FDA revamps food labeling Zephyrhills High food nutrition production assistant Tammy Lovings dishes up baked chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy. 813-909-2800 / CnewsPubs.com THE LAKER September 14,2011 12 By Kyle LoJaconoklojacono@cnewspubs.comThe Pasco football team defeated Land O'Lakes for the fifth consecutive season, the longest winning streak in the 36-year rivalry. The Pirates (2-0) took a 7-6 halftime lead against Land O'Lakes (1-1),but the Dade City squad put up 32 points in the second half to win 39-6 as the injury depleted Gators seemed to wear down. "Land O'Lakes has always been a good team,"said Pasco coach Tom McHugh."I've been doing this for a long time and they've always been a very good team." The Gators were without five starters to begin the home contest on Sept.9;four because of injury and defensive back Jordan Michelson was out for off-the-field reasons. Tight end Kent Taylor broke his left hand in Land O'Lakes'kickoff classic against Anclote, and linebacker Shadow Williams broke his left hand against Zephyrhills on Sept.2.Center John Kranendonk and safety Darin Patmon were also hurt against the Bulldogs, with a cracked sternum and injured knee respectively. The injury bug continued to bite the Gators against Pasco, as wide receiver Ricky Boyles left the game after halftime with a concussion. Gators coach Brian Wachtel did not use losing six starters as an excuse. "Pasco's a good football team,"Wachtel said."In the second half of the game they made some big plays. Our kids fought hard. I'm so proud of our kids for everything that they did out there tonight, and man it was exciting at half 7-6.We're just going to have to go back and evaluate the film and move forward." The game started promising for the Gators,as they forced a fumble on the Pirates second play from scrimmage, but Land O'Lakes was unable to come away with any points. The Pirates came out from halftime on fire, scoring touchdowns on their first four drives to take a commanding 32-6 lead."Coach had a good speech at halftime,"said Pasco running back David Emmanuel."We were a little bit down because it was a very close game. Normally we would be ahead by a mile, but he told us the right things and we came out and did what we had to do."Pasco started running the ball more with the 6-foot,175-pound Emmanuel in the second half to take advantage of the short-handed Gators. "Our offensive coordinator found a weakness in their line, and we capitalized on it and made big plays,"Emmanuel said. Emmanuel finished with 221 rushing yards and three touchdowns.Grant had three scores of his own,all receiving. Emmanuel said of sharing a backfield with Grant,"He's like my brother. There's competition between us every game.He normally comes out on top first, but I guess I tied it up in the end tonight." Emmanuel had to miss the Pirates'first regular season game with a shoulder injury, but the junior showed no lingering effects against the Gators. "David runs the ball hard,"McHugh said. "If you don't bring everything you have to tackle David, then it doesn't work." Guy finished 14-of-23 for 232 yards and three touchdowns.Wide receiver Trey Dudley-Giles had four catches for 84 yards and added another 28 on kick returns. The Land O'Lakes defense did cause some problems for the Pirates, recording six sacks for -29 yards. Bird went 12-for-23 for 192 yards with one touchdown and an interception. The Gators signal caller added another 40 rushing yards. The victory increased Pasco's lead in the all-time series against Land O'Lakes to 2016.The Pirates host Wiregrass Ranch on Friday,Sept.16 at 7:30 p.m.The Gators have a bye next week, and then host district rival Hernando on Friday,Sept.23 at 7:30 p.m. 2011 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL STANDINGSClass 7A-District 7 Gaither 1-1 (0-0) Steinbrenner 1-1 (0-0) Tampa Bay Tech 1-1 (0-0) Chamberlain 0-1 (0-0) Freedom 0-2 (0-0) Wiregrass Ranch 0-2 (0-0) Class 6A-District 6 Mitchell 2-0 (0-0) River Ridge 2-0 (0-0) Sunlake 2-0 (0-0) Hernando 1-1 (0-0) Land O' Lakes 1-1 (0-0) Nature Coast 1-1 (0-0) Springstead 1-1 (0-0) Central 0-2 (0-0) Class 5A-District 6 Pasco 2-0 (0-0) Wesley Chapel 2-0 (0-0) Fivay 1-1 (0-0) Hudson 0-1 (0-0) Anclote 0-2 (0-0) Gulf 0-2 (0-0) Ridgewood 0-2 (0-0) Zephyrhills 0-2 (0-0) Pirates junior running back David Emmanuel ran for 221 yards and three touchdowns against Land O'Lakes. "It's fun because we get to teach football to a lot of kids who are new to the game," said Zephyrhills Christian coach and principal Mike Smith."Here it's a lot more about fundamentals. We can't do a lot of things like we did last year, but we'll get to build on this new foundation." Mike has found a few more differences teaching sixth and seventh graders from the juniors and seniors. "The first day I had four kids crying because they didn't want to run because it was hot, which is very different from the high school kids, but that has changed and by the fourth practice they were all ready to go," Mike said. The Warriors will have a familiar name at quarterback to start the year sixthgrader Javan Smith.Javan is Mike's youngest son and the brother of Mikey Smith, who was Zephyrhills Christian's signal caller in 2010.Javan had a front-row seat to the Warriors 2010 perfect season. "I saw every game,"Javan said."I was the announcer. It was a great experience. We have the talent to do a lot here, but we're still working on some things." One of the biggest players on the squad is ninth-grader Devon Grannis,an offensive lineman. He relishes the chance to build the program to that championship level. "I feel honored to help build the program back,"Grannis said."Maybe next year we can get back to that state final." Another player who Mike predicts will help return the Warriors to greatness is seventh-grader Nevada Taylor,a linebacker and running back. "I really wanted to play, and this team has great potential,"Taylor said."We've got a great coach who has helped us come a long way in a short time." Taylor said he looks up to Josh Roberts, who was the Warriors running back last year. The story is similar with seventh-grade linebacker Josh Wilcox, who looks up to Dale Smith Jr.,last year's starting linebacker. "Watching (Dale) taught me how to be a linebacker,"Wilcox said."He's a great player." Dale graduated last year, while Roberts and Mikey decided to be home schooled and play on the Zephyrhills football team this season. "Mikey and Josh both thought it was the right time to try and play with the public school,"Mike said."They both want to play in college and wanted a chance to get a little more attention." Mikey is still around the program on a daily basis. He helps coach the offense during the team's practices, held during the student's normal physical education class in the afternoon. The timing allows the former Warriors quarterback to help the program before leaving for Zephyrhills practice. It seems coaching runs in the Smith family. "I love the sport, but I love helping the kids and impacting their life,"Mike said."I believe with all my heart that football kept me in school.I believe it kept me away from drugs and alcohol. Those things were there, but I knew if I did those things I wouldn't be able to play on Friday night."I try and translate everything we do into life for these kids,"Mike continued. "When things are difficult,I tell them lots of things in life will be difficult. But at the end of the day you don't quit because things are difficult. You get up on your feet and keep fighting.I want to it be an impact on their life spiritually and mentally for years after they take off the pads for the last time."The Warriors play at Hernando Christian on Thursday,Sept.15 at 4 p.m.They will close the season at home against Jacksonville Eastland Christian on Thursday, Oct.20 at 7 p.m. Warriors football rosterNo.2 Johnny Casarez No.3 Josh Wilcox No.4 Javan Smith No.7 Deshawn White No.8 Austin Arrington No.25 Robert Keldie No.40 Josh Kinney No.48 Nevada Taylor No.53 Caleb Wilcox No.60 Zechariah Mitchell No.65 Devon Grannis No.77 Jarod Clemons No.80 Mike Sheffler No.99 P.J.SeekinsZephyrhills Christian football builds anew Sixth-grader Javan Smith carries the ball during one of Zephyrhills Christians six-man football practices. Bob White, who was Nocco's predecessor before he retired in April, asked for a $4 million increase in the current budget for the sheriff's office to in part hire 28 new deputies.White fought for months before eventually settling on an additional $945,000 to pay for increasing benefits costs. No new workers were hired. Nocco jokingly said he was "looking for an olive branch"on his way to the commissioners meeting."There may have been contention in theDRUGS,from page 1past,but I hope to start a new day,"Nocco said. Nocco said the new workers he is requesting for intelligence-led policing differs from what White wanted. He said the new team would be like a "special operations group." White's request was meant to simply beef up the number of deputies in areas of west Pasco.Nocco is asking for the increase to come from the $4.7 million his office saved from the current fiscal budget. The reductions came mainly because the Legislature passed a new requirement that all state workers must contribute 3 percent of their salaries to their pension plans. Commissioners are scheduled to have two more public meetings before voting on the budget on Sept.20,including if they will officially agree to Nocco's request. The new budget year begins Oct.1. boundaries. The land is needed for expansion of the airport runway.Currently, the property consists of vacant pasture and borrow pits."The city had always had in their big-picture plan to purchase this property,"Wilkeson said.Acme Development Corporation owned the land, but Zephyrhills bought the northern 17.5 acres of the property."We all knew this was coming and supported it,"Wilkeson said. The other piece, estimated to be 24.5 acres, will be annexed and purchased at a later date. "The other one we didn't purchase but we made a plan to do that in the future to extend our runway to the airport,"Drumm said."But we made an agreement that we would want them to annex it in now into the city's jurisdiction so when it's ready to be bought,we'll already have put the zoning (on it)." Currently the area is in county zoning, but once its bought,it can be changed to city zoning. "It's pretty meaningful,"Alexander said about the picnic."I didn't know what to expect.I just wanted to show my support." John Bushell, who was a police officer in Tampa for 30 years and has been with the mounted posse for eight years, said he was with current Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi eating breakfast at a Village Inn when they heard about the attacks. "It doesn't seem like it was 10 years ago," he said. Congressman Nugent, who according to Price was an "unexpected guest,"said as much as the victims of the Sept.11,2001 attacks needed to be remembered, recognition also needed to be heaped on first responders, including the firefighters. "They ran into a burning building as people were running out,"Nugent said."It is a thankless job." Weatherford, who spoke shortly after Nugent, called first responders his heroes. He also praised citizens like Todd Beamer aboard United Airlines flight 93,which crashed near Shanksville,Penn. "It seems like Sept.11,2001 is still fresh in our minds,"Weatherford said.He noted how it could be hard to remember what you ate for breakfast,or what you did last week. But he said it's crystal clear what you were doing when you heard about the attacks. "You can't change what happened. You can't change that our lives will never be the same since that day." And he acknowledged that while the country may have its differences over different economic policies or party lines, there are things people don't argue over because they don't have to. "We're arguing over how we're going to spend money. We're not arguing over free speech,"he said. ZEPHYR PARK,from page 1 Rep. Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, speaks in the afternoon part of the event.
