JOB DESCRIPTIONS
The following is a list of jeobs found in the housing and home
furnishings area to be used for general information only. There
are variations in every job and no job listed below has a complete,
precise job description.

1. Appliance demonstrator: a skilled person trained by a store
or firm to demonstrate the use and care of an appliance.
2. Architect: a college-trained person responsible for the
planning, design, and supervision of construction of all
types of facilities.
3. Buyer for home furnishings and equipment: a college graduate
or a trained person with years of experience who works for a
store selecting and purchasing for the store.
4. Building inspector: a technically trained person employed by
a local government who examines building sites insuring the
county that specific rules are maintained during construction.
5. Carpenter: a highly skilled person who builds or rebuilds
with wood or similar materials.
6. Cabinet Maker: a carpenter trained in one process of building
doors, drawers, and storage spaces.
7. City planner: a college educated person who assists in
planning the location of new buildings or facilities in the
development or redevelopment of a city or living area.
8. Color consultant: a design-oriented person with trained or
inborn decorating abilities working with a building supply
company or department store. He/she is useful in helping the
customer select appropriate supplies and materials for home
decorating.
9. Commercial machine operator: a skilled person working in an
industrial situation who has been trained to work within one
particular process on an assembly line.
10. Consumer consultant: a professionally trained person employed
by the government or private organizations who investigates
and maintains records for consumer information.
11. Custom home furnishings seamstress: a highly skilled person
who sews draperies, slipcovers, pillows, etc. used in a home.
12. Decorator's aide: an apprentice to a decorator who helps and
learns the trade of decorator.
13. Department head in home furnishings department: an experienced
salesman who has earned his way to the top. He has much to
do with organizing, buying, displaying, and administration
department activities.
14. Drapery Assistant: a partially trained person who is learning
correct drapery-making procedures.

15. Drapery Estimator: a person employed by a store who assists
the customer in selecting and ordering draperies. He estimates
the price of the material and installation.
16. Drapery maker: a skilled person working privately or employed
by a firm who makes draperies and other items for room
decoration.
17. Extension home economist: a college graduate employed by the
state to work in a county. She serves as a resource person
for local organizations, schools and people in the home
economics area.
18. Floor covering consultant: an informed salesman who works for
a floor supply company counseling with a customer in helping
him make a selection.
19. Florist: a highly skilled person with artistic abilities who
buys, arranges, and sells floral decorations.
20. Florist's assistant: a person who helps a florist while
learning the work.
21. Furniture assembler: a skilled member of an assembly line who
has been trained to work on a specific process in furniture-
making for mass production.
22. Furniture designer: a college graduate trained in design who
is able to draw and construct pieces of furniture for the home.
23. Furniture refinishing specialist: a highly skilled person
who strips old finishes from furniture and refinishes it for
a customer.
24. Gardener: a skilled person who cares for lawns, flowers,
shrubs, and trees for a private home owner or a commercial
establishment.
25. Gift wrapper: a person who wraps purchases for the customer.
26. Glazier: a skilled person who cuts and installs glass and
mirrors.
27. Handyman: a skilled or semi-skilled person hired to repair
or maintain a household.
28. Home furnishings aide: a person who assists in selecting
and planning decorations for the home.
29. Homemaker: a person who supervises the buying, management,
cleaning, decorating and care of a household.
30. Household products technician: a technically trained person
who works for a commercial or industrial organization testing,
modifying or improving home products.
31. Housekeeper (institutional): an upper level skilled job
concerned with janitorial supervision and orderliness of
hospitals, hotels, motels, or transportation vehicles.
32. Housemother: a skilled person or college graduate who councils,
advises, coordinates activities and supervises young adults
living in households, dormitories, or apartments.

35. Interior decorator: a college trained person hired by
corporations, businesses, or private homeowners to decorate
interiors of living quarters.
34. Interior designer: a college trained person hired by corpo-
rations, businesses, or private homeowners to design interiors
of living quarters.
55. Kitchen planner: a technically-oriented person hired by home
designers, mobile home builders, home construction firms,
appliance companies, to provide information and requirements
for necessary kitchen requirements.
36. Land developer: a college trained person who plans land use
for land-owning corporations.
57. Landlord: a person who is responsible for upkeep and repair
of rented or leased homes.
38. Landscape architect: a college trained professional hired
by corporations, businesses, or private homeowners to design
and supervise attractive land scenery.
59. Management aide in public housing: a person, usually a college
graduate, hired to provide necessary information and guidance
in planning housing units for maximum working space for the
individual family with minimum costs.
40. Merchandising specialist: a person highly skilled in selling
and buying; many years experience and seniority promotes a
hard worker into this administrative position.
41. Mobile home dealer: salesman and buyer from large companies
who helps families select "homes on wheels" meeting their
specific needs.
42. Mobile home designer: a college graduate who designs, plans,
and supervises mobile home construction.
43. Movie set designer: an interior designer hired by theatrical
or picture firms to design sets for use in production.
44. Moving company consultant: a person hired by local moving
companies to visit the home and advise and give estimates
to a prospective client.
45. Nursery man: a skilled person who grows, sells, and advises
people on care and use of plants around a home or business.
46. Painter: a skilled person hired to paint inside or outside,
large areas or trims.
47. Paneling installer: a carpenter who installs wall or ceiling
panels.
48. Paper hanger: a skilled person who decorates the home with
wallpaper, vinyl coverings, etc. to cover the walls.
49. Picture framer: a person hired to skillfully mat, glass, and
build a frame for a picture, making it a decorator's item.
50. Plasterer: skilled persons who apply coats of plaster to walls,
ceilings, and partitions.

51. Real estate agent: a person who handles sales, or rentals
of land, homes, or apartments.
52. Research specialist for fiber, fabric, or equipment company:
a technically trained person who experiments with various
products on industrial levels.

piece of furniture, reconstructing the inside and covering
it with fabric.
54. Reupholsterer's aide: entry level job helping a reupholstered.
55. Slipcoverer: a person skilled at sewing furniture covers that

works under an experienced slipcoverer.

FAMILY SITUATIONS AND METHODS OF SECURING HOUSING
SITUATION A:
Mr. and Mrs. Smith have three children and live in a rented
apartment in the city. They have saved a considerable amount
of money, planning to use it as a large down payment on a house.
They had always planned to build a house in the country but their
children do not want to be isolated by distance from possible
playmates. The nearest doctor and hospital is thirty miles away.
However, a school is located six miles away to which the children
could ride a bus. The Smith's have only one car, so Mrs. Smith
would have to wait until Mr. Smith returned from his job in the
city to do shopping and socializing. They are now considering
a house in a quiet suburban area with police and fire protection
and adequate public transportation. The children could walk the
five blocks to school. The Smith's have three choices:
1) Stay where they are.
2) Build in the country.
5) Buy a house in the suburbs.
SITUATION B:
Mr. and Mrs. Black are in their thirties and have a small child.
Mr. Black has a good job with a national firm, which occasionally
involves moving from one section of the country to another. Mrs.
Black would like to buy a house and settle down, but they both
know that if Mr. Black continues his present position for another
five years, he will probably be promoted to a managerial position.
Should they buy now or wait?
SITUATION C:
Mr. and Mrs. Jones' family of five children has outgrown its
three-bedroom home. They would have to borrow about $10,000 to
add to the selling price of their home to buy a larger house of
sufficient size. In addition to another bedroom, they need a
family room, extra bathroom, and utility room. Even though they
would still have to borrow money to remodel and build a small
extension to their house, Mr. Jones thinks he could do most of
the labor himself. Since he holds a job, he would have to work
evenings and on weekends. He likes to work with his hands. If
they chose remodeling, it would probably be a year before the
new addition was completed. What should they do?

SITUATION D:
Mr. and Mrs. Hill are young, both work, and they have no children.
Other than a car, they have no major debts. They have planned to
work for a while and then get other jobs in a different section of
the country. They do not plan on children for several years.

APPENDIX # 17
PLANNING AND PLANTING A TERRARIUM


Terrariums are miniature gardens enclosed in clear glass or plastic
containers. The container may be round glass globe, mayonnaise
jar, apothecary jars, fish acquarium, brandy snifter or others.
Choose your container according to the room where it will be used.
Terrariums provide almost ideal conditions for many plants.


Terrarium plantings are easy to construct.

1. Place a 1-inch layer of gravel, pebbles, broken crock or
charcoal under the soil to handle excess water.
2. Cover the gravel with three to four inches of good organic
soil (one part peat to one part sand). Mound the soil higher
on one side to provide a naturalistic setting.
3. Select a plant or plants that basically have the same cultural

ADVERTISEMENT ANALYSIS

A local company advertised, with big headlines, that it is
cheaper to own a house than to rent. The statement was allegedly
made on the basis of a survey aF owners, and the advertisement
included the income of a typical couple, their previous monthly
rental, monthly payment on house purchased, taxes and insurance,
income tax deduction For taxes and interest, etc. The advertiser's
figures "showed" that this family saved $1800 a year by buying a
house in his development.
In analyzing the advertisement, we asked questiones
(1) Can we really say we have saved the money allotted
to average annual appreelation based on past ten-year
experience?
12) Is this appreciation taxable if the property is sold
at a profit?
(3) What does appreciation here mean?
(4) Is the tax deduction for taxes and interest really
savings?
(5) How much equity did the couple acquire in the house the
first year? On the average per year for the life of
the mortgage?
(8) What do we mean by equity?
(7) Is this equity savings?
(8) Are there other advantages to home ownership beside
case consideration?
(9) Are there disadvantagee?
(10) Why did this advertisement praeant a different ploture
from the one we might draw?
An income tax analyst who was used as a resource person
concluded that the only real savings may be the equity acquired;
some savings (not to exceed $125 per year) may be realized from tax
deductions.
