en-USHistoric Downtown Fort Myers, Then And Now: en-USHotel Transitions en-USby Gerri Reaves, PhDen-USIen-USn 1907, Frank Graham of Brooklyn, New York, bought land en-US across from the Lee County Courthouse on Oak Street en-US (todays Main Street). en-US The parcel stretched along the north side from Monroe to en-US todays Broadway (created in the mid-1920s). en-US He had big plans a 50-room hotel but the property en-US didnt take off, indeed, doesnt seem to have been developed, en-US until after it changed hands several times and came into Alice en-US Tonneliers ownership in January 1913. en-US She was the wife of Peter Tonnelier, who, after arriving in en-US Fort Myers in 1912, became one of the towns biggest propen-US -en-US erty owners and developers. en-US The Tonneliers, and, to some extent, Tonnelier brothers Edward and Henry, en-US were major players in the towns 19-teens boom. en-US Alice went on to become a significant property owner in her own right, both en-US during her husbands life time and after she was widowed in 1932. en-US The hotel location was a promising one, for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroads en-US passenger depot was a stones throw away just across Monroe on the northwest en-US corner. en-US The railroads arrival in Fort Myers in 1904 boosted tourism and the economy en-US in general, particularly agriculture and the citrus industry, for goods could be en-US shipped up north. en-US In addition, the town needed good accommodations for the increasing flow of en-US visitors. en-US In the early 20th century, only a handful of real hotels existed in Fort Myers en-US the Royal Palm, Bradford, River View and Hill House were the main ones supen-US -en-US plemented by boarding house hotels, such as the Florida House and Thorp House. en-US The Hammon was one of several hotels the Tonneliers owned over the years, en-US including the Graystone, the Leon and Grand Central. en-US Late in 1914, the Hammon advertised a single meal for 35 cents and a en-US 21-meal ticket for $7. en-US Within a year or so, it was renamed the Kenmore and greatly expanded and en-US renovated.en-US A two-story addition was designed around a rotunda, and nine additional en-US rooms were built. en-US From the second-floor balcony, guests could enjoy the view of the new county en-US courthouse, completed in 1915. en-US The new rooms were booked prior to opening, suggesting a successful business. en-US It was otherwise a convenient location, with a caf on the corner at Monroe and en-US various stores and businesses within a block and at the hotels ground level. en-US Nevertheless, the hotel was gone by the mid-1940s. Decades ago, a Goodyear en-US store occupied part of the parcel and then was vacant for a time. en-US In 2009, the seven-story Hotel Indigo opened. en-US Walk over to the site of an early 20th century hotel that lay just a hop, skip and en-US a jump from the railroad depot. en-US Then visit the following two research centers to learn more about the many en-US hotels that awaited visitors in Fort Myers through the decades. en-US The Southwest Florida Historical Society is an all-volunteer, non-profit organizaen-US -en-US tion open Wednesday and Saturday between 9 a.m. and noon and Wednesday 4 en-US to 7 p.m. en-US It is located at 10091 McGregor Boulevard on the campus of the Lee County en-US Alliance for the Arts. American Virtuosi Gala photo by Jesi Cason PhotographyAllen Fiske will speak about his journey as a disabled boat captain at the Mound House on Tuesday, March 27. The event, which is part of the Friends of the Mound House speaker series, begins at 5:30 p.m. with refreshments. The talk begins at 6 p.m. Admission is free. Fiske grew up on the water. Born in central Massachusetts, he spent summers on Cape Cod and on Rhode Island beaches. His fascination with sailing took hold early and continued through college and beyond. He owned three sailboats and became a regular sight as a captain on Long Island Sound. Then, at age 36, he was involved in a car accident that left him with paraplegia. He believed his life as a sailor was over. Ironically, at about the same time, a sailor from Newport, Rhode Island, by the name of Harry Horgan became a paraplegic and started Shake-A-Leg, Fiske explained. Horgan developed an accessible sailboat called the Freedom Independence 20. That would become the ticket to Fiskes independence as well. He sailed for a couple of years with Shake-A-Leg in Newport before moving to south Florida. In 1990, Shake-A-Leg opened a branch in Miami. For 12 years, Fiske was outreach director for Shake-A-Leg. Then last year, he was invited to crew for a month-long sail from Boston to Quebec City aboard the Impossible Dream, a 58-foot wheelchair-accessible catamaran, the only boat like it in the United States. We had been invited to join 40 tall ships from around the world and take part in RDV2017, the 150th anniversary celebration of Canada, Fiske said. Today, he still teaches sailing on Miamis Biscayne Bay. We use 10 of the specially designed sailboats and 10 disabled assistant instructors to teach graduate students at the University of Miami who are getting a PhD in physical therapy how to sail, Fiske said. The Mound House is located at 451 Connecticut Street on Fort Myers Beach. For more information, call 765-0865 or visit www.moundhouse. org. THE RIVER MARCH 23, 20186 Fort Myers Art: Company To End Season With Guerilla Theater by Tom HallGhostbird Theatre Company will end its sixth season by producing Samuel Becketts Catastrophe as a free piece of guerilla theater on Friday, May 4. The exact location and time, however, will not be disclosed until the last minute. So be alert lest you miss this extraordinary theatrical event. The play involves a limited cast consisting of an actor (the protagonist), who stands motionless on a plinth, and a director, his female assistant and a lighting tech, who mold the abject thespians stance, posture and costume to fit their own personal vision and predilections. Ghostbird describes Catastrophe as a comedy about directing, or more accurately, a play about directorial hell. One of Samuel Becketts more overtly political works, the play can also be viewed as an allegory on the power of totalitarianism and the struggle to oppose it with the protagonist metaphorically representing oppressed people worldwide who are ruled by dictators and autocrats and used as mere pawns in the advancement of their personal, socio-economic and political agendas. In fact, Beckett dedicated Catastrophe to a Czech playwright by the name of Vaclev Havel, who was imprisoned several times for his dissident political views (with the longest occurring from May of 1979 to February of 1983). Another popular interpretation postulates a simile between theater and divine creation, with Catastrophe functioning as a satire of the creator/ artist/directors right, power and prerogative to control the work thus have created. Becketts version of the play contemplates the actor as an elderly man, but a number of theater companies have raised variations on these themes by recasting the protagonist as a beautiful young woman [think, #metoo or #timesup] or a black actor, who the director and his assistant attempt to make as white as possible. Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) is widely recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. He is most renowned for his play Waiting for Godot, which launched his career in theatre. He then went on to write numerous successful full-length plays, including Endgame in 1957, Krapps Last Tape in 1958 and Happy Days in 1960. Beckett received his first commission for radio from the BBC in 1956 for All That Fall This was followed by a further five plays for radio including Embers, Words and Music and Cascando Like no other dramatist before him, Becketts works capture the pathos and ironies of modern life yet still maintain his faith in mans capacity for compassion and survival no matter how absurd his environment may have become. Ghostbird has not given any intimation of what, if any, interpretations, modifications or surprises it may have in store relative to their guerilla theater performance of the four-page, one-act play. However, it is likely that the site it chooses for Catastrophe will bear on the interpretation Ghostbird brings to bear. Ghostbird is the only theater company in the American South devoted to site-specific work. And its precisely because Ghostbird works hard to partner with just the right venue for each of its productions that it has been recognized as one of the 10 best companies in Florida for live theater. With shows such as ORBS! and The Perfect Island of Dr Teed (held at Koreshan State Historic Site in Estero), Writing Shadows (staged at the historic Langford-Kingston Home in the downtown Fort Myers River District) Antigonick (staged at artist Marcus Jansens warehouse-based art studio in Fort Myers), No. 27 (performed at Bonita Springs historic Shangri-La Springs) and The Chicken Play (performed outdoors under the super moon and inside the screened pavilion at the Happehatchee Center in Estero), Ghostbird has taken tremendous strides in just the past two seasons in developing performances in which the play and setting converse with one another. The experimental theatre company takes its name from a swamp-dwelling ivory-billed woodpecker once thought to be extinct, but which has been spotted sporadically over the past two decades. Drawing upon the elusiveness, mystery and magic of its namesake, Ghostbird Theatre seeks to draw its audiences into those deep spiritual woods where they can discover loss, beauty, communion, reconciliation and hope. en-USby Gerri Reavesen-USPen-USeregrina (en-US Jatropha intergerrimaen-US ) is en-US an ornamental tree or shrub native en-US to Cuba and the West Indies. en-US Despite its non-native status, even en-US native-plant and butterfly enthusiasts en-US appreciate it as a nectar plant. This en-US member of the spurge family can en-US grow up to 15 feet tall with a wide en-US spread, developing a slender trunk and en-US branches. However, it usually reaches en-US only about eight or nine feet. en-US The large evergreen leaves are about en-US six inches long and vary widely in en-US shape. Some are shaped like a fiddle, en-US and others are irregularly lobed or even en-US have three pointed lobes. en-US The bright red clusters of flowers en-US bloom throughout the year. Five-petaled en-US and about an inch across, they attract en-US hummingbirds and butterflies such en-US as monarchs, swallowtails and zebra en-US longwings. en-US The flowers vivid color gives en-US the plant another common name, en-US firecracker. It is also called simply en-US jatropha. en-US The six-lobed fruit is round or oval en-US and less than an inch long. When dry, en-US it explodes and disperses the speckled en-US seeds that are very toxic to humans. en-US The milky sap is toxic too and can en-US irritate the skin, so be careful when en-US handling the plant. en-US Avoid planting peregrine in an area en-US where children or pets have access. en-US Give it a well-drained spot in full sun en-US or partial shade. It adapts to a range of en-US soil conditions and is drought tolerant en-US but not salt tolerant. en-US It can be trained to grow on a wall or en-US lattice or used as a container plant. en-US Sources: 500 Plants of South Florida en-US by Julia F. CROW Case Of The Week: Limpkin by Bob PetcherThe limpkin ( Aramus guarauna) is an odd-looking bird that also goes by the name crying bird, most likely for its unmistakable piercing wails. It is also called carrao or courlan. While a full-sized limpin looks more like a heron or ibis, its skeletal makeup more closely resembles a crane. It has tall, long legs with a long beak. It is distinguishable by its mostly brown body that sports white spots throughout. One can usually see this type of bird in marshes and swampy forests. What makes the limpkin unique is its diet. It feeds almost exclusively on apple snails, which are regularly found in the aquarium trade but are also wild in Florida ditches and ponds. The limpkins long and heavy bill helps pry shells of apple snails apart then cuts through the muscle to pull the snail out in a quick process that generally takes less than half a minute. While apple snails are the limpkins preferred primary source of food, they can also dine on frogs, lizards, worms, insects and other crustaceans if needed. While the limpkin is not on the countrys birds watch list, it is regarded as a species of high concern. It was hunted to near extinction some 100 years ago, but legal protection aided in its species revival. At CROW, an adult limpkin was admitted with a limp. The bird was initially brought to one of the clinics drop-off locations. The finder noted that the bird was found caught in fishing line, but no location of where the bird was found was provided. Upon examination at intake, the limpkins left foot was noted to have swelling over the metatarsophalangeal joint. X-rays showed the left foot had no fractures and no obvious joint involvement. The metatarsophalangeal joint is the joint just above the foot, which looks like an ankle on people, but actually correlates to the joints between the foot and the toes, said Dr. Malka Spektor, CROW veterinary intern. The joint is used in birds to stand and move the feet. CROW medical staff also noticed one of the patients toes on its right foot had a P3 amputation. While the toe amputation was questioned as a causal effect of the monofilament line, Dr. Spektor stated that was not the case. The amputation appears to be an old injury that is fully healed, she said. It is just missing a portion of one toe, which should not hinder the patient. An infection may cause a delay in the limpkins recovery process. The next step for the patient is to reduce the swelling in the foot, and to ensure it does not affect the joint. A major concern is an infection present in the area, even though one was not present on initial testing, said Dr. Spektor. The limpkin is on antibiotics and pain medication to target the swelling and hopefully improve it. The patient was provided with fluids, pain medications and soft footing in its enclosure. It was also provided with apple snails. The foot is still swollen this weekend, said Dr. Spektor on March 18. A regional limb perfusion (to treat the infection) is planned to focus the antibiotics directly to the area. Once the swelling is controlled, the patient will be moved outside to regain strength prior to release. en-USBack To A Winter en-US Fishing Pattern en-US Yet Again en-USby Capt.en-US en-US Matt Mitchellen-USYen-USet again, en-US plunging water en-US temperatures en-US brought on by en-US another cold front en-US totally switched en-US our fishing back to en-US a winter pattern en-US even though the en-US calendar says its en-US spring. Just as water temperatures had en-US begun to rebound, a few really cold days en-US quickly dropped it back to a chilly winter-en-US like 62 degrees in the sound. Although en-US this cold weather brings the snook bite to en-US a complete stop, other species turned on en-US and kept the action going. en-US Sheepshead and black drum became en-US our target species again while hiding from en-US the wind and trying to stay warm and en-US comfortable. Fishing with chunks of shrimp en-US in areas around the passes and docks en-US caught lots of keeper-sized sheepshead. en-US One surprise this week was finding a new en-US dock that produced lots of black drum of en-US all sizes. One cold blustery day, we manage en-US to catch four legal-sized black drum ranging en-US from 16 inches to 24 inches while fishing en-US this dock. The smaller black drum are great en-US to eat and put up a good battle on light en-US tackle. We caught these black drum for en-US three days in a row when returning back to en-US this same dock.en-US With a colder than average March en-US playing out for us, shrimp fishing will en-US remain the daily go-to until our water en-US temperatures rebound. During the few en-US days that we experience south winds and en-US warmer weather just before the passing en-US of a cold front, its worth giving shiners or en-US pinfish a try. Until our water temperature en-US creeps back into the high 60s, shrimp are en-US going to give you the best action. Both live en-US shrimp and shrimp chunks are giving my en-US anglers the best opportunity to not only en-US catch a wide variety of species but to go en-US home with dinner too. Every species of fish en-US that swims in our waters will eat shrimp en-US and, during these cold water periods, a en-US small profile bait like a shrimp will get a en-US bite when simply nothing else will.en-US Some of the weeks best action came en-US while fishing with chunks of fresh shrimp. en-US Breaking of the tail of the shrimp and en-US threading it on the hook backwards before en-US pinching off the head not only makes a en-US very small compact offering but also puts en-US scent in the water. Although Im seeing lots en-US of bigger sheepshead in the clearer water en-US areas, the better bite has come in the more en-US churned-up water closer to the passes. en-US Look for some of the better sheepshead en-US fishing around the docks within close en-US proximity of the passes. While fishing en-US these docks, you may get surprised with en-US a variety of other species including drum, en-US redfish and pompano. en-US Capt. en-USRed Sox-Yankee Rivalry Shoulden-US en-US Be A Headline Attraction In 2018en-USby Ed Franken-USTen-UShere is probably no other exciting and historic rivalry in all en-US of sports as the one between the Boston Red Sox and the en-US New York Yankees.en-US And as Spring Training moves into its final days, there are en-US strong indications that the battle between these two teams may en-US once again stir strong, even bitter emotions, between Red Sox en-US and Yankee fans throughout the 2018 season and possibly en-US beyond.en-US There are several facts for this reasoning:en-US The Yankees added slugger Giancarlo Stanton and his $325 en-US million contract (largest in sports) to their roster. And teamed en-US with All-Star Aaron Judge (56 home runs in 2017), they form an outfield tandem en-US unmatched in baseball.en-US As for the Red Sox, who have won back-to-back American League Eastern Division en-US Championships, the addition of outfielder J.D. Martinez (45 home runs in 119 games en-US last season), provides Boston with the prestigious power they lacked last season upon en-US the retirement of David Ortiz. en-US In addition, all of Bostons starting lineup returns this year.en-US Adding to the pending excitement of the new baseball season is the fact that both en-US teams have new managers. Boston lured Alex Cora away from the World Champion en-US Houston Astros after John Farrell was fired when his division champions were en-US eliminated in the first round of postseason play two years in a row.en-US The new Yankee skipper is Aaron Boone who returns to New York after an eight-en-US year career in broadcasting. He replaced Joe Girardi, who had managed the Yankees en-US to a World Series title in 2009.en-US It is the first time in more than 25 years that both teams start the new season with en-US rookie managers.en-US Boone holds a special place in Yankee history as the result of his Game Seven, en-US 11th inning walk-off home run in the 2003 American League Championship Series en-US against Boston. Despite his heroics, the Yankees lost to the Florida Marlins in the en-US World Series.en-US Boston and New York had played 19 regular season games and seven post-season en-US games that season before Boones bottom of the 11th inning home run.en-US The Red Sox did go on to win the 2004 World Series, their first since 1918.en-US There are many great rivalries in sports, but few will argue that the Red Sox-Yankee en-US battles will be on the top of most any list.en-US And the 2018 baseball season could be another one.en-US Twins Lose Shortstop Jorge Polanco In Drug Suspensionen-US Earlier this week, the Minnesota Twins announced that starting shortstop Jorge en-US Polanco had been suspended for 80 games by Major League Baseball for the use of en-US performance enhancing drugs.en-US Polanco, 24, said he took a tainted combination of vitamin B12 and an iron en-US supplement from his trainer in the Dominican Republic .en-US In 2017, Polanco hit .256 with 13 home runs and 74 RBIs. He is not eligible to en-US return to the Twins lineup until June 30, and isnt eligible for postseason play. He also en-US will lose several hundred thousand dollars in pay. en-USTHE RIVER MARCH 23, 2018en-US26 en-USSuperior Interiorsen-USStripesen-USby Linda Coinen-USSen-UStripes are en-US one of the en-US most versatile en-US decorating tools en-US available. They can en-US make a room look en-US bigger or wider, en-US more serene or en-US bolder.en-US But, as with en-US everything in en-US life, too much of a good thing can en-US sometimes be a bad thing. So here are en-US a few helpful hints for your striping en-US considerations:en-US 1. Watch out for wide stripes with en-US dark or bright colors. They tend to en-US be overpowering. Use them in small en-US quantities, where they can still be an en-US attention getter, but the room wont be en-US overpowered.en-US 2. Keep in mind that the larger the en-US room, the wider the stripe can be. Too en-US small a stripe in a large living room en-US could possibly get lost within the rest of en-US your design plan.en-US 3. A narrow vertical stripe works en-US well in smaller rooms, particularly those en-US with low ceilings they will make your en-US room appear taller by drawing your eye en-US upward.en-US Stripes are truly the great mixer. en-US They are fantastic when coordinated en-US with other patterns such as florals and en-US plaids. If you want to create your own en-US combinations, dont be afraid of the en-US possibilities. en-US Just remember when mixing stripes en-US with other patterns, be sure to find a en-US common element which will in most en-US cases be color. en-US Linda Coin is an interior designer en-US on Sanibel/Captiva Islands and can be en-US reached at linda@coindecden.com. en-USFinancial Focusen-USTalk To Your en-US Spouse About en-US Retirement Visionen-USby Jennifer Baseyen-USIen-USf youre single, en-US your retirement en-US goals are your en-US own you dont en-US really have to en-US consult with en-US anybody, and you en-US can change your en-US plans whenever en-US you like. However, en-US if youre married, en-US you and your spouse should develop a en-US joint vision encompassing all the key en-US areas of your retirement lifestyle.en-US These are a few questions you may en-US want to address first:en-US Where should we live? Once you en-US retire, you may need to consider two en-US key aspects of your living situation: en-US the size and location of your home. en-US Regarding size, you may look around en-US one day and realize you have more en-US living space than you actually need. en-US This is especially true, of course, if en-US you have children who have set out en-US on their own. So, if you have a large en-US single-family house, you may want to en-US consider whether you should move into en-US a condominium or even an apartment, en-US either of which might be more cost en-US effective for you.en-US As for location, you may decide en-US that retirement is the perfect time to en-US move, either to seek a more favorable en-US climate or to be near grown children en-US and grandchildren. In any case, moving en-US to a different area is a major financial en-US decision, so you and your spouse will en-US certainly want to discuss all the aspects en-US of relocation.en-US Will either of us work? Retirement en-US no longer means the cessation of all en-US work. You or your spouse or perhaps en-US you and your spouse may want to use en-US your skills and experience to do some en-US consulting or even open your own en-US business. Adding a source of earned en-US income will almost certainly help your en-US financial picture during retirement, but en-US if either you or your spouse is planning en-US to do some work, you will want to be en-US sure this activity doesnt disrupt other en-US plans that may be important to you, en-US such as traveling. Also, any source of en-US earned income during your retirement en-US years may well affect important en-US financial decisions, such as when to en-US take Social Security and how much en-US to withdraw each year from your en-US retirement accounts, such as your IRA en-US and 401(k). Again, its essential that you en-US and your spouse be on the same page en-US about any type of employment during en-US retirement.en-US How will we spend our time? Aside en-US from possibly doing some type of work en-US during your retirement years, how else en-US might you spend your time? Would you en-US like to travel extensively? Or would you en-US rather stick close to home and pursue en-US your hobbies or volunteer? These en-US dont have to be either-or decisions en-US hopefully, youll be able to explore en-US many pursuits during your retirement. en-US Keep in mind, though, that there will en-US be different costs for these various en-US activities, so you and your spouse may en-US need to prioritize your choices to ensure en-US they fit into your overall financial en-US strategies.en-US As you can see, you and your spouse en-US will have some key decisions about the en-US financial aspects of your retirement. en-US However, with some careful planning, en-US you can make the moves that can en-US help you work toward your common en-US retirement vision.en-US This article was written by Edward en-US Jones for use by your local Edward en-US Jones financial advisor. 27 THE RIVER MARCH 23, 2018 RIVER Book ReviewEnd Game by Di SaggauEnd Game David Baldaccis explosive new thriller brings back two of his best characters, Will Robie and Jessica Reel. Reel is sarcastic and is not afraid to get into someones face. Robie is quiet, sensitive and will hold back. Sometimes her abrasive behavior has adverse effects but they seem to feed off one another in a cohesive partnership. Its obvious that they care a lot for each other. As the book begins, Robie is on a mission in London where he has to single-handedly take out a Jihadist terrorist cell, and Reel is in Iraq doing sniper duty for the military. Once these missions are completed, the two are asked to find their handler, The Blue Man, Roger Walton, who has gone missing in Grand, Colorado. Robie and Reel are two of the most lethal people alive. Theyre the ones the government calls in when the utmost secrecy is required to take out those who plot violence and mass destruction against the United States. Finding Blue Man is their highest priority. With no communications since he took a rare vacation to go fly fishing in his hometown, they cant help but fear the worst. As Robie and Reel arrive in the small town of Grand, they discover that it has its own share of problems. The local economy is stagnant, the police force is understaffed and the small community has become a magnet for crime, drugs and a growing number of militant fringe groups. Lying in wait is a bigger threat, one that could shake the very foundation of America. Investigating hideaways for the super wealthy, in case the world implodes, pits the duo against an adversary with superior firepower and a home-court advantage. He was inspired by the TV show Breaking Bad so you get the picture. End Game is a novel with a fastaction story. Fans will not be disappointed in this thriller. The good news is, you know theres going to be another Robie and Reel book in the near future. School Smartby Shelley M. Greggs, NCSPDear Readers, Kids with learning and attention issues need a great deal of support, sometimes more than a parent has the time and energy to give. Some recent research indicates that assistive technology (AT) may provide extra support at home for struggling students and their parents. Remember AT is generally defined as any device, piece of equipment or system that helps a person with around his/her challenges for better functioning. Jaime Martin, an assistive technology consultant, who specializes in finding AT solutions for students and adults with dyslexia, has identified numerous ways that a home assistant device, like the Amazon Echo or Google Home can make everyday tasks easier for kids who struggle with learning and attention. Once you understand how these voiceactivated and hands-free home assistant devices operate, you can ask them questions or give them commands to help with reading, writing, math and executive functioning skills. Here are some great tips from Mr. Martin. Home assistants can help with spelling. When kids are writing, they can ask how to spell a word they have trouble with. If its a word that has more than one spelling like deer vs. dear, its a bit trickier, but kids can clarify which spelling they want. For example, they can say, How do you spell the animal deer? Home assistants can give definitions and synonyms. Kids with reading issues can also ask home assistants for the meaning of words they dont recognize. Kids can ask for synonyms if they want to change words in their writing. Home assistants can help sound out words. Kids who struggle with decoding can ask how to pronounce a word by spelling it out. With Google Home, they can say, OK Google, how do you pronounce p-h-o-n-e? With Amazon Echo, they can use a skill called Pronunciations and say, Alexa, ask Pronunciations how to say r-o-u-g-h. Home assistants can read books aloud. For hands-free listening to books, Amazon Echo has two options. If you have an Audible account, your child can listen to Packed with facts and employing an engaging storytelling style, [Female Pioneers of Fort Myers] both teaches and entertains. Local history buffs and newcomers to history will value Tuthill and Halls research and appreciate the accessible format, too.Gerri Reaves, PhD, author of Legendary Locals of Fort Myers and Fort Myers, Then & Now Available atWWW.AMAZON.COM WWW.EDITORIALRXPRESS.COM an audiobook just by saying, Alexa, read Alice in Wonderland. Alexa can also read aloud Kindle books that are text-tospeech compatible. Kids just have to say something like, Alexa, read Fish in a Tree in Kindle Books. Right now, Google Home does not read books aloud. Home assistants can help students who struggle with math. Kids can ask for basic calculations by saying, What is the square root of 25? or What is 32 percent of 500 dollars? If kids need help with unit conversions, they can say something like, OK how many degrees Fahrenheit is 25 degrees Celsius? If kids forget math formulas, they can get a reminder by saying, How do you find the area of a circle? Kids can even practice math by using an interactive tool called 1-2-3 Math. It asks various math problems in a quiz format. Its available as an Echo skill and as a Home action. Home assistants can set timers, alarms and create to-do lists. Kids who have trouble staying on task for a certain amount of time can ask for a timer to be set for a certain number of minutes and then take a break and start again. Kids can ask for a reminder to start their homework at a specific time as well. Kids who have trouble keeping track of school assignments and chores can use a home assistant to create a to-do list. With Echo, kids can add tasks to their list with a command like, Alexa, put practice trumpet on my to-do list. To access the list, they can say, Alexa, whats on my to-do list? With Google Home, kids can use third-party apps to create and keep track of a to-do list. Home assistants can manage calendar events. Keeping track of due dates and events can be tricky for kids with executive functioning issues. Home assistants let kids manage calendars by voice. They can add events with the command, Add calendar event. To hear whats coming up, kids can simply say, Whats on my calendar for Sunday? The potential of home assistants is just emerging but its clear that these devices will soon become an important tool for kids and adults to get extra support for learning. As always parental guidance and supervision is required. Shelley Greggs is adjunct faculty at Florida SouthWestern State College, where she teaches psychology and education courses. The hospital en-US delivers over 1,500 babies a year.en-US The Baby-Friendly Hospital project en-US uses hospital policy as a strategy to en-US reduce obesity and other chronic en-US diseases by improving optimal infant en-US feeding practices through implementing en-US evidence-based maternity care. en-US According to the Centers for Disease en-US Control (CDC), for women who intend en-US to breastfeed, the hospital experience is en-US critical, and to give infants the best start en-US in achieving a healthy life, including en-US reduced obesity, mothers must be en-US supported immediately after birth to en-US establish breastfeeding.en-US More mothers in Florida are en-US choosing to breastfeed their newborns en-US but few breastfeed long enough to en-US gain the maximum benefits for both en-US mother and infant. According to the en-US CDC National Immunization Survey, 77 en-US percent of mothers in Florida choose en-US to breastfeed their babies but less than en-US 13 percent continue to breastfeed en-US exclusively to the recommended six en-US months.en-US Studies published by the Agency en-US for Healthcare Research and Quality en-US (AHRQ) indicate that hospitals en-US practicing evidence-based maternity en-US care, as outlined by the United Nations en-US Childrens Fund (UNICEF) Ten Steps en-US have more patients breastfeeding in the en-US hospital with longer durations outside of en-US the hospital.en-US The designation is maintained by en-US continuing to practice the Ten Steps en-US as demonstrated by quality processes, en-US and successful completion of an onsite en-US survey. en-USCharity Grants en-US Program Expands, en-US Applicants Soughten-USSen-USWFL Childrens Charities, Inc., a en-US local nonprofit dedicated to saving en-US childrens lives by supporting en-US organizations committed to pediatric en-US health care services and education, is en-US accepting proposals from additional en-US nonprofit organizations seeking funding. en-US For those interested in becoming a en-US beneficiary of the 2019 Southwest en-US Florida Wine & Food Fest, applications en-US are available at www.swflwinefest.org/en-US grants-program-for-new-beneficiaries. en-US To be considered, applicants must en-US download, complete and submit an en-US online application by Thursday, April 5.en-US To qualify for funding, initiatives en-US must strive to improve the health and en-US well-being of children in Southwest en-US Florida. Music has en-US a power that can en-US be utilized to fit en-US into absolutely everything you do, and en-US it will make all the noise of life go away en-US in just a split second. I play music to get en-US everyone going early in the morning, en-US for motoring through my workout en-US routine, plowing through the workday, en-US and then for enjoying my preparation of en-US the evening dinner routine. en-US There is a song or melody for en-US absolutely everything we do that will en-US inspire, motivate and lift our spirits en-US as well as calm, relax and soothe our en-US souls. I am such a huge fan of music en-US that I can still sing almost every lyric of en-US every song that I loved as I grew up. I en-US remember enjoying everything from en-US rock, disco, R&B to Christian, pop, jazz en-US and country. All the various kinds of en-US music have a place, and a time to enjoy en-US and appreciate. en-US I still listen to large variety of en-US music depending on what I am doing en-US throughout the day, and how I want en-US to set the mood. My family has grown en-US to also love and appreciate the many en-US various kinds of music, and they know en-US which ones to turn on when we are all en-US together, without me even having to en-US ask. en-US I have a few suggestions for music en-US that just might enhance your day and en-US help you continue to live your most en-US balanced and beautiful life.en-US Morning Start your day out fresh en-US with music that motivates and inspires en-US you. Contemporary Christian, gospel or en-US pop music that has positive messages en-US should keep you in good spirits and will en-US ensure that you begin a new day with a en-US smile, happiness and a great outlook.en-US Workout In my opinion, there en-US is nothing better to workout to than en-US a blast from the past, but make sure en-US it has an upbeat tempo to keep you en-US moving fast and forward. I have many en-US fun flashbacks from the 80s so I get en-US a good jolt from that era, but I also en-US love an upbeat tempo, so the teen and en-US dance beats work well too. Of course, en-US if youre winding down or doing yoga, en-US you will need something motivating yet en-US calming at the same time in order to en-US focus on your routine. en-US Day time I personally have to en-US focus on so many different tasks at en-US hand throughout the day so I tend to en-US gravitate towards a very subtle tone of en-US music with no lyrics, like spa, tranquility en-US or soundscapes of various kinds. Even en-US soft classical music can keep you en-US focused, but the point is that when only en-US instrumentals play in the background, en-US my mind is clear to think and make en-US major decisions without much conflict en-US on words.en-US Evening This is a time that I love en-US to prepare dinner and wrap up my en-US workday so my favorite music to play en-US is a soft jazz that gives a bit of a fun en-US festive feel yet quiet enough for all to en-US enjoy a good conversation over. en-US Regardless of your age and your love en-US of music, I know for sure that picking en-US the right music for the right time will en-US ensure that your moments and moods en-US are everything you want them to be. en-US My affirmation for you this week is:en-US I will appreciate all that music brings en-US my moods and will make the best en-US choices for the right moments in life. en-US Kay Casperson is a beauty and en-US lifestyle expert, founder and CEO en-US of Beautifulife by Kay Casperson. en-US She owns resort spas on Sanibel and en-US Captiva islands and manufactures en-US beauty and lifestyle products sold en-US across the country. RIVER deaRPharmacistDont Ignore Bloating, May Be Ovarian Cancerby Suzy Cohen, RPhDear Readers: Cancer, named by Hippocrates as karkinos, actually refers to a giant red crab in Greek mythology. Eating crab legs (something I havent done in years) will never be the same now that you know this useless fact but anyway cancer means that there is uncontrolled cell growth in a tissue, and its termed proliferation. Cancer strikes fear into the heart of millions of people each year. Once diagnosed, people are often motivated to alter the number of chemicals in their life, change their diet and lifestyle and sometimes end toxic relationships. Hindsight 20/20 occurs, like with my dear brother Danny, who had chronic low back pain and dismissed it. Sadly, it was one of several plaguing symptoms that was connected to colon cancer and he realized this after his diagnosis. My brother was a secret, and he really was. If youd like to read more about us, our relationship and his ultimate passing go to my website and search that phrase. Momentarily, I am going to tell you about a common symptom that you might have which could be tied to ovarian cancer. No one is immune from hearing the word if they live long enough, especially in a day and age where environmental and food pollutants abound. And then theres cosmetic ingredients as well, such as talc. There was a woman who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2015, and her family was awarded $72 million dollars as a result of this talcum powder lawsuit. New clinical trials and scientific articles have been popping up over the past year about medications and their benefit to ovarian cancer. For example, the medication class of statins (used for cholesterol management) have been investigated for their chemoprotective role, which is good. And recently, a study cleared metformin concluding that it does not raise risk for ovarian cancer, which is also good. Heres more interesting news. You might be able to detect it sooner if you dont ignore this common symptom. Bloating. The bloating is not the typical kind of bloating that you might get now and then with your menstrual cycle, or after eating beans. The type of bloating is chronic. Additionally, other signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer include pelvic pain, frequent urination, quick satiety, feeling queasy and chronic fatigue. There are six natural remedies that Id like to share with you today. I will list them all here for you, so you can research on your own. If by chance, you want me to elaborate on the benefits of all of these, please sign up for my free newsletter at www.suzycohen.com, and Ill email you a longer version of this article that contains that information. In no particular order, here are the six holistic options to consider for healthy reproductive structure and function: 1. Medicinal mushrooms 2. Chia and Flax seeds 3. Turmeric 4. Resveratrol 5. Green Tea Extract 6. Iodine If youre struggling with ovarian problems, do personal research because new compelling treatments, natural remedies and anti-cancer therapies are constantly being evaluated and released. There is always hope. This information is not intended to treat, cure or diagnose your condition. Suzy Cohen is the author of The 24-Hour Pharmacist and is a registered pharmacist. THE RIVER MARCH 23, 201832 Doctor and DieticianExercise And Brain Functionby Ross Hauser, MD and Marion Hauser, MS, RDWe already know that exercise is great for our bodies, but scientific evidence continues to confirm that exercise also strengthens the brain. Moderate exercise nourishes the brain, improves our ability to learn, boosts mental performance, remodels the brain and helps prevent the brain from aging. Scientists used to think the adult brain structure was fixed, and no new cells could be made or the brain altered in any way after adolescence. However, physical activity boosts blood flow all through the body, including the brain, which increases the ability of brain cells to connect with each other. Increased connectivity can occur by simply walking. More vigorous exercise, such as running, leads to faster reaction times and improved learning. Physical activity has been linked to a lower risk of the development of cognitive decline, because it is, in essence, a fertilizer for the brain, nourishing it and improving attention, memory and information processing. A March 2018 article from Mayo Clinic Proceedings, researched all PubMed literature from 2017 regarding exercise and Parkinsons disease, as well as exercise and cognition. The literature showed a direct benefit of exercise on the brain. Dementia is the most feared aspect of Parkinsons, but adults who engage in exercise during midlife, are able to significantly reduce the risks of dementia and cognitive impairment later in life. Exercise reshapes the brain. When we dont use our muscles, they atrophy. The brain is no different. Boost the health of brain cells, stimulate the growth of new blood vessels in the brain and encourage new neuronal connections through exercise. Start your day with exercise. Exercising in the morning prepares you for the day by enhancing brain activity, improving information retention and fine-tuning your ability to react to the situations and stressors that come your way. Exclusion guidelines on how to remove bats from buildings can be found at www.myfwc.com/bats. Materials and methods to exclude bats can affect the success of that process. For more information on how to conduct a bat exclusion, watch the YouTube video: How to Get Bats Out of a Building. Further details on how to conduct a legal bat exclusion can be found at Bat Conservation International. Bats are beneficial to people and are an important part of the ecosystem. The states native bats help keep insect populations under control, with the average bat eating hundreds of insects a night. In addition to the benefit of keeping mosquitoes and other insects at bay for residents appreciating the outdoors, the value of insect suppression by bats to U.S. agriculture has been estimated to be in the billions of dollars. There are several ways that Florida residents and visitors can help bats: Preserve natural roost sites, including trees with cavities and peeling bark. Dead fronds left on palms can also provide roosting spots for bats. Put up a bat house. Report unusual bat behavior to: www. myfwc.com/batmortality. Bats can carry rabies. Although infected bats may not become aggressive, like any other wild animal, they can bite to defend themselves if handled. Dont touch or go near any wild animal, especially one thats not acting normally. For more information about rabies, visit the Florida Department of Health website at www. floridahealth.gov. FWC staff are working to learn more and share information about Floridas bats. For more information on Floridas bats, visit www.myfwc.com/bat. THE RIVER MARCH 23, 2018 37 KING CROSSWORD SUPER CROSSWORD MAGIC MAZE SUDOKU PUZZLE ANSWERS My Stars FOR WEEK OF MARCH 26, 2018ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Congratulations, Lamb. This is the week to finish your project and then bask in your well-earned approval. (And if you like, you also can say bah to all those detractors.) TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The bold Bovine could find a new opportunity too intriguing to be ignored. But dont charge into it. Go slowly so you see how things develop as you get more involved. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might try to soften your stand on that important issue. A little more flexibility actually could get you what youre looking for. A new friend enters the picture midweek. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your inner voice is on the mark when it advises you to tackle that family problem now! The sooner youre able to come to terms with it, the better it will be for everyone. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Someone reveals important news about a longtime associate. But before you decide how to deal with this information, make sure its reliable, and not simply self-serving. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some intensive soul-searching early in the week can help you reach a decision by weeks end that should please both you and the other person involved. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The possibility of a career change is intriguing. Learn more about what it can offer and what it cannot. Weigh everything carefully. And ask questions. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Work is your priority this week as you try to make up for lost time. Expect help from someone who cares about you. Things take a welcome turn by the weekend. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A health problem causes some anxiety early in the week. But prompt medical attention soon eases everyones concerns. Enjoy an arts-filled weekend. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) As much as you might resent it, a changing situation could require you to adjust your plans accordingly. The good news: An associate agrees to cooperate. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) That old problem is finally resolved, just in time for you to take on a new workrelated project. This one could be the super door-opener youve been looking for. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The early part of the week presents some difficult hurdles. But once you get over them, you can start to focus on matters that are more important to you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are respected for your honesty and your dedication to doing the right thing, no matter how difficult that might be. On March 30, 1775, King George III formally endorses the New England Restraining Act, requiring New England colonies to trade exclusively with Great Britain. Another rule banned colonists from fishing in the North Atlantic. On March 28, 1814, the funeral of Guillotin, the inventor and namesake of the infamous execution device, takes place in France. The machine was intended to show the intellectual and social progress of the Revolution: By killing aristocrats and journeymen the same way, equality in death was ensured. On March 31, 1836, the first monthly installment of The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, by 24-year-old writer Charles Dickens, is published under the pseudonym Boz. Only 400 copies were printed, but by the 15th episode, 40,000 copies were printed. On March 27, 1912, two Yoshina cherry trees are planted on the bank of the Potomac River, as part of a gift of 3,020 cherry trees from Japan to the United States. After World War II, cuttings were sent back to Japan to restore the Tokyo collection that was decimated by American bombing attacks during the war. On April 1, 1984, Motown singer Marvin Gaye is shot and killed by his father as a result of a longstanding feud. The father, a preacher, was a hard-drinking cross-dresser who envied his sons success, and Marvin Jr. clearly harbored unresolved feelings toward his abusive father. On March 26, 1997, police in Rancho Santa Fe, California, discover 39 victims of a mass suicide. They were members of the Heavens Gate religious cult, whose leaders preached that suicide would allow them to leave their bodily containers and enter an alien spacecraft hidden behind the Hale-Bopp comet. On March 29, 1999, the Dow Jones industrial average closes above 10,000 for the first time, at 10,006.78. It was French poet, journalist and novelist Anatole France who made the following sage observation: The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread. If youre planning a trip to North Carolina in June, try to make it to the small town of Spiveys Corner for the annual Hollerin Contest. If youd like to participate but are worried about straining your vocal cords, you can always enter the conch-blowing contest instead of one of the ones that involves actual yelling. You might be surprised to learn that famed British author Aldous Huxley, best-known for his dystopian novel Brave New World, was a consultant on Disneys 1951 animated film version of Alice in Wonderland. After the vows have been said in a traditional Korean wedding, the groom formally introduces his new wife to his parents. The brides father-in-law then pelts the bride with red dates, which is supposed to ensure fertility. Jazz musician Glenn Miller was the recipient of the first gold record ever awarded, for the big-band hit Chattanooga Choo-Choo. You might be surprised at some of the seemingly innocuous things that arouse passions in a group of people. Take the venerable 1960s television show Mr. Ed, for example. Evidently an evangelist named Jim Brown took issue with the shows theme song, claiming that when played backward, the tune contains the message the source is Satan and someone sang this song for Satan. His preaching on the subject was so persuasive that members of a church in Ironton, Ohio, made a bonfire of recordings of the song. Men of genius are often dull and inert in society, as a blazing meteor when it descends to earth, is only a stone. -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow THIS WEEK IN HISTORY STRANGE BUT TRUE THOUGHT FOR THE DAY TRIVIA TEST 1. THE RIVER MARCH 23, 2018 39 Top 10 Real Estate SalesCourtesy of Royal Shell Real EstateAdoption Center Holds Grand OpeningThe Animal Refuge Center celebrated its 30th birthday on March 17 by holding a grand opening of the Brighter Beginnings Adoption Center. The brand new, 2,400 square foot building is the first and last place the ARC visits with its guests. The adoption center is home to our reception desk, meet-and-greet room for pets being adopted, offices to fill out the applications and places for our staff to work and take a break. The Brighter Beginnings Adoption Center is such a wonderful addition to our facility, ARC Board President Rob Spicker said. It completely changes the experience our guests have when they come meet and adopt one of our cats or dogs. The Brighter Beginnings Adoption Center was built thanks to the generous donations of the Animal Refuge Centers many sponsors. We hope the opening of this building is just the beginning of the transformation of our 22-acre shelter into something even more special than it already is, said Spicker. We couldnt shelter the animals we do and adopt about 500 cats and dogs every year without the support of our community. Since 1988, the Animal Refuge Center has been fulfilling its mission of sheltering animals in need, adopting as many as possible into good homes and educating Southwest Florida about proper pet care. ARC is Southwest Floridas largest no-kill shelter and vows that that once an animal is accepted for adoption, it will not be destroyed to make room for another. ARC is located at 18011 Old Bayshore Road in North Fort Myers. For more information, visit www. animalrefugecenter.com.
