EDITORS CORNER Lissette Rosado, Editor live.lifeinpalmas@gmail.com Send us your email to: live.lifeinpalmas@gmail. TAKE OUT & DELIVERY AVAILABLE FROM 5 PM TO 9 PMAsian Cuisine Every night! Buy 2 Rolls, get 1 California Roll FREE Dear friends and neighboors. We cant complainthese past Christmas festivities were outstanding, not to mention the good weather we have had for the last two months. Here you will nd a vast coverage of our communitys holiday festivities that were many. I have to highlight the Lechn Classic Golf Tournament, a very unique tournament that has become a true tradition in Palmas. Another of Palmas traditions is our annual Golf Cart Parade that never ceases to surprise me with the inventive and creativity found in the decorations! I think this is one of our funniest activities of the year, because it is not only about the day of the parade but rather the planning and preparation of the golf carts. Some are even very secretive about their theme and decorations. This year, as you can see in the photos, people went overboard! Fun, fun, fun! On the other hand the Three Kings Day Cabalgata was beautiful, a real show! Its a pleasure to see those wonderful paso no horses from our Palmas Hacienda and the amazons with their beautiful dresses throughout all Palmas. The New Years Eves parties were also splendid. This year, even when I had promised myself to spend the night in only one place--at our beautiful Yacht Club, I couldnt help but visit my good friends from Chez Daniel after twelve and later C Bars Aponte clan at Palmanova. C Bar once again went all out and treated us with a magnicent display of reworks that were seen from all points in Palmas. Thanks again for the reworks show, they were magnicent! On the other hand, during the holidays we had the visit of our beloved Chayanne. It was so nice to see him! I know Chayanne since he was a kid in the all boy singing group, Los Chicos. I used to work as the Public Relations Ofcer for Channel 4 and he used to act in the local soap operas lmed in our studios. You know what? I used to sit him in my lap and tell him he was my favorite little boyfriend!! Then he would tell me that I was his favorite OLD girlfriend! (This was 30 years ago, and I was already old) What a tragedy! But... it is good to see that he is as sweet and noble as he was before his now successful success. Its nice to see that not everything is lost. Chayanne has been able to survive in the entertainment business without ever having a personal scandal and has kept his family protected and safe. God bless him! I hope you enjoy this issue and may you have a wonderful St. Valentines Day and Easter Holiday. S tay connected!

18 www.LLPalmas.com PRESIDENT THE We are off to a new year full of hopes and aspirations. The government leader ship in the mainland USA has revalidated and in Puerto Rico it has changed and with the change there is a new dawn full of exciting optimism in our beloved island. Let us begin the year trusting that better days are just ahead and that the future is bright and clear. Do not let the doom-criers dampen your spirit and hope for a better tomorrow. There may be sacrices to make along the way, but ours remains the greatest nation on earth and we should trust that there is nothing ahead but goodness and prosperity for our country and for each of us individually. We at Palmas del Mar begin the year on a positive note. Behind us are the troublesome issues that were dividing us as a community and we are all pulling in the same direction. Property sales continue to improve in all categories and we nished 2012 with a better record in sales of new properties that in 2011. This bodes well for the community and for the nancial health of the Association. At PHA we will remain focused on well dened strategies that will sustain the growth of the community, enhance our property values, improve our quality of life and make our living environment more safe and secure. This will be my last column as your President as my term draws to a conclusion at the upcoming Annual Meeting on April 7, 2013. I want to thank you for your steadfast sup port and for your vote of condence and trust to guide your Association through the challenges, opportunities and dif culties we have faced together in the past couple of years. It has been very exciting and very rewarding. Palmas is ours and is now better than ever because you have taken the stock of ownership to your heart and you have made your voices heard. Let us continue marching together united in purpose toward the common goal of making our community the dream community we all want and richly deserve. My best wishes and blessings on the months and years ahead. Servando Golf Cart owners are reminded that carts must be registered with PHA to obtain the 2013 registration stickers. The grace period for obtaining the 2013 sticker was extended until February 15th. After this date, Palmas security will issue a $60 ne to carts driven without the 2013 registration. To obtain the new registration you must provide PHA with evidence of an inspection and a certicate of insurance reecting PHA as an additional insured. Service inspections are offered by the following companies located at Palmas for a minimum fee: Carts Pro (787-285-7081), Target (787-405-1248) and Best Golf (787-850-3260). Golf carts are authorized to travel exclusively on desig nated cart paths and are required to be driven responsibly taking the safety and security of others using the pathway into consideration. In addition to golf carts, paths are used for bicycles, walking and jogging. The Palmas Security De partment has the responsibility of enforcing the security norms and the rules for driving golf carts. Fines will be issued for the violation of the following restrictions: GOLF CART REGISTRATION & RULES

Mission AccomplishedGabriela is a Mechanical Engineer and most importantly, a good and well-balanced human being. This page started as a social coverage of my daughters graduation party. I was going to write a small paragraph on how much I love her, that I was so proud of her, etc, etc. But thenI looked back on her up-bringing process and decided to share with our young parents some of my experience as a parent. I hope I could be of some help to young parents on this difcult path. I received some good help and advice, in Gabrielas early years, I feel now it is my time to pay it forward. As any parent, seeing your daughters achievements is a great satisfaction. You feel that all the growing pains (even though I never had serious problems with her) have been worth it. Because, as anybody that has kids knows, that it is not an easy task. But now, in retrospect, I will try to summarize what I feel we did well as parents in several aspects: First, Dont pretend to be your kids friends. They will try to manipulate you with that story, dont buy it! Before anything you are his/her mother/father. Later on, like right now with my daughter, that I am more of a friend, but not quite, I still her am mother, and she knows it. Second and equally important, I always told my daughter that as long as I support her, I was the boss. You have to act as the boss. Start that from the very beginning. Once that is established, the rest runs relatively smoothly (with some bumps here and there, when you have to give them a friendly reminder of this hierarchal principle). BE A My fathers daughter, Ricardo Collazo and I divorced when she was around eight years old, but nevertheless we kept a united front (many times better than married couples that undermine each others authority). If you dont do that they learn very fast to manipulate you and the only one that looses is your kid. You have to be on top of everything, their friends, where they go, what they see, what they read and what the write. I remember when, after Gabriela was asleep, I turned on the reggaeton channel with a notebook to copy some of the lyrics to discuss with her the next day why I was opposed to them (mainly because of the way they refer to women and the promotion of violence and indiscriminated sex). Its important to talk to them and make them understand that your concerns are not based on caprice but on facts. Even if they seem not to hear, they do. (Go to the Internet and look for information on the matter you want to discuss). Remember that in love, war and the raising of children, everything counts. when raising children. I always say that both when upbringing kids and advertising harping on your goals works! How many times have you caught yourself repeating what your parents told you? If it worked for you it will work with your kids. It doesnt matter if they tell you: Yes, mom/dad, you already told me that how many times you are going to tell me the same thing? Thousand more if I need to, I used to tell Gabriela. Keep repeating it, eventually they will internalize and it will be part of their nature. SHOW THEM THAT HIS/ Make them understand that in life one has to face the consequences of ones actions. If they do wrong, let them suffer the consequences. If you impose a punishment to your kid, stick with it. Dont yield to the pressure they and other people will try to Gabriela and her cousins, Cristina, Laura and Oriana. My sister Glenda with her husband, Michael Schulevits and my niece Oriana, a Brown University student. My sister Ginnette with her husband, Ren Chinea and my two nieces, Laura (with her husband Joe akdja), and Cristina. Gabriela with her cousin Cristina, also a Mechanical Engeneer student from Georgia T ech.My beloved father, Luis M. Rosado, Civil Engineer and the family patriarch. My brother, Luis M. Rosado, the only boy in the family and his wife and almost a sister, Aimee Hernndez. Nanda Frontera, a good friend who has seen Gabriela grow up and with whom I share many of my concerns and worries in the process of education. Nathan and Fabian, my brothers sons. Fabian studied with Gabriela in the same classroom from pre-school to twelfth grade.

PAGE 31

impose on you. I remember a lie Gabriela told me in her senior year of high school. That lie cost her a trip to Miami with her cousins to visit my eldest niece for Thanksgiving. The trip was cancelled and all my other nieces and nephews begged me to forgive her, they even wrote mediation letters. In the end nobody went. Nowadays, they are all adults and we laugh about it but she learned her lesson. And last but not least, TELL THEM HOW MUCH YOU LOVE THEM. Hug them, kiss them and tell them how much you love them every day, many times. My daughter is 23 and when we talk on the phone everyday I tell her how much I love her. And if you feel you are loosing control ASK FOR HELP from a good professional specializing on the matter. Share with other parents their experiences, and communicate with your children friends parents. Your kids will try to make you feel you are the ogre. Oh mom, but Pedritos parents let them go to the party! Boloney! Most of the time, when you talk to your kids friends parents, they dont. INVOLVE THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS in the upbringing. There is nothing in life that gives you more condence than to feel loved and appreciated by your family and close friends. Here I want to openly thank Sandra, my good friend and art director, for the coaching she gave me when Gabriela was a kid, since she had gone through that process before me. Also to Nanda Frontera, my good friend, who also shared with me many of her experiences and to Vivian Bird, who taught me about the violet light to protect Gabriella when she went out! I still use it! And nally I want to thank my three wonderful sisters for being accomplices in many ways during the whole upbringing process. The stories are many!! There are also many books that could help you understand the different stages they go through. I read a lot to the point that my mother-in-law used to tease me: Gabriela is a girl brought by the books. Well yes, I learned a lot from the books I read. Its not easy but it can be done and at the end you will save yourself from many headaches in the future that could last forever. Bottom line, I feel we did a great job as parents and now we are reaping the benets. And it is not over. I am sure it will continue. I guess you are a mother or father until the end! But... I will say the worst part is over. Congratulations Gabriela for your success. You are now a full-edged Mechanical Engineer that has passed your rst certication! Most importantly, you are an excellent human being and a well-balanced person. We are very proud of you and even though you are not going to be very happy about me telling everybody that you lied to me etc, if it helps other parents, its worth it. I am sure you will forgive me. 32 www.LLPalmas.com ENERGY SA VINGS: Case Study#1 AEE bills July 2012-Jan 2013Do you want to know how to reduce your power bill? This article will report on one residents successful effort to do just that by analyzing his energy consumption status, developing an energy plan and implementing upgrades that have reduced his power bill by over 38%. Jose Beauchamp owns a beautiful six-bedroom home in Harbour Lights. Its ten air conditioning (AC) units have typically accounted for more than 65% of his electric bill. As most residents here know, it is difcult to control AC usage in large homes and forgetting to turn them off when rooms are unoccupied can really drive up costs. Joses plan to address the AC problem combined different approaches to reduce cost without compromising comfort. First, the AC system was redesigned to reduce the number of AC units through more optimal location, cooling capacity, and use of fans wherever possible. It was decided to upgrade the older AC units with inverter type ACs, which use from 25 to 40% less power. Inverter ACs are more cost efcient to operate because they can vary the speed of the compressor and fan motors, consuming less power over time. So, ten standard ACs were replaced with 7 inverter ACs and two ceiling fans to cool the same amount of living space at less cost. To eliminate the use of ACs when rooms are unoccupied, Jose decided to install a wireless and programmable AC Control system, consisting of passive infrared motion sensors, door switches and power interrupters. This system, installed in individual AC areas and rooms, takes control of the ACs when space or rooms are unoccupied. It can be programmed to increase room temperature and/or shut down the AC in response to extended periods without occupants, open entry and balcony doors, and other conditions. Dehumidication can be programmed as well, for extended absences. The combination of door switches and motion sensors prevents this type of system from shutting down the AC inappropriately, like when occupants are asleep or in the bathroom or closet. This system is employed in major hotel chains and has produced enormous savings and power conservation. All of the changes described above were implemented over time, which allowed measurement of energy costs as the upgrades were implemented. The results were impressive: average daily energy costs, measured by an installed power meter (eGauge), have been reduced by 38%. The annual savings are 17% of the amount invested in new ACs and controls, which means that they will pay for themselves in about half of their expected service life. Additional savings have been identied in Joses plan, to include additional AC controls and a gas powered clothes dryer to replace the existing electric unit. For more control, Jose can monitor power usage through any web enabled PC or mobile phone, and text alerts can notify him when programmed limits are exceeded. Various businesses collaborated to produce these results for Jose. Rudy Nurse of Rudy Realty (787-123-4567), is the property manager and played a key role in identifying savings opportunities with the AC redesign and inverter upgrade. Juan Pena of Pena Air Conditioning Services (787-456-7890) installed and maintains the new inverter ACs. Lionel Ortiz-Santini and Dave Frazier of Anura Systems Inc. (939475-8000) designed and installed AC controls and power meters. Power bill amounts before (July-September) and after implementation of inverter ACs, AC Controls and Power Sensor. Home was unoccupied in October and implementation began on November 1st.

46 www.LLPalmas.comWe dont use scarves in Puerto Rico because we live in the tropics and the weather is always warm. False! The scarf is the ultimate accessory this season regardless of what part of the hemisphere you live in. It looks great almost on everyone, it brings new life to any outt and it can be worn in innite ways. The best fabrics to look for in our climate are: linen, linen gauze, cotton and silk. Should you have plans for travel during the season, a light weight wool is a good choice as you would also be able to wear it in our winter season. Also, a good choice is a light shawl that you can wear as a scarf and put around your shoulder should the temperature fall during the night or while at a show or restaurant where the air conditioning is usually set on cool temperatures. Shown here are a few exemplary ways of wearing a scarf and the differ ent fabrics available that are appropriate for our climate. You can nd these and lots more at SONIA SANZ at Palmanova Plaza. ...of love celebration! In a beautiful ceremony, Maribelle Muiz and Juanjo Boschetti renewed their vows of love after 15 years of mar riage and two children, Maria Isabelle and Juan Jos. The bride (and the guests) found out about the party the same morning of the wedding from a message Juanjo sent through Facebook. He planned everything by himself without telling anybody. Luckily Maria Isabelle and her cousins had appropriate dresses for the cer emony due to the fact that they had just participated recently in another wedding. Nevertheless, Maribelle and Didi, had to rush to San Juan to get Maribelle a bridal dress. Everybody was so exited in the Muiz house hold! Immediately the creativity emerged and the golf cart was decorated to take the bride to the Yacht Club were Juanjo had installed a huge cross to serve as a background for the ceremony. Didi, Maribelles mother, was concerned about the details but we have to admit that Juanjo took care of everything. He has accumulated many points! All the married men were complaining that they had a problem now with the standards Juanjo has established. Good job Juanjo! May God give them many years of love and good times. years

Chef Frank Arnould strikes again with a superb six course dinner tasting that brought together those food and wine lovers in Palmas. (I saw many familiar faces from the last dinner tasting). The Champagne and wines were also extraordinary. I have to highlight: Champagne Piper Heidsieck Brut/ 93 points Wine Spectator. teau du Cartillon 2006 Haut Medoc, an excellent wine, intense and elegant. Very rounded and well balanced. teau Laroque 2005Saint Emilion Grand Cru. Wine Spectator rating of 91 out of 100. It is certainly rm, a very sophisticated and balanced wine, easy to drink and very enjoyable. Big, rich and elegant, this wine has ne, lifted black fruits layered over dry new wood and fruit tannins. It is certainly rm, and needs at least 4 years aging, but it will develop into a sophisticated, balanced wine. Our Church need your helpFive years ago, a group of ladies of the community de cided to contribute with their work for the construction of the catholic chapel in Palmas del mar. They opened a Flea market ( pulguero ) to sell all those things that many people are willing to give away. This project has been a success. The main idea was to sell at very low prices. You can purchase almost everything you can imagine: clothes, kitchen tools, linen, furniture, and decorative articles. In addition to the contribution to the Chapel, they are serving the needs of the low-income population that waits for Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday to go shopping at the pulguero Many people nd incredible articles for a little amount of money. The major need for this group of volunteers is to nd do nations. They recommend that all those things you have in your closet for more than a year without use could be part of this project. Also, when redecorating your house, donate your old decorations to the pulguero They thank all the people that have contributed to this project in so many ways. The success is dedicated to everyone that is part of the project! So, move on, make some space in your closets and be part of this effort that benets you (that will have more space in your closet), the church and the people that look forward to buying these treasures. P A LMA NOVA PLA Z A P A LMAS DEL MAR We came to Palmas del Mar from our home in New York to spend ten days. My husband was going to participate at the Country Clubs golf tournament and then we were going to spend a few more days enjoying the resorts life. The tournament was spectacular. It was golfers and their families a mini convention on the grounds and facilities of Palmas del Mar. What initiated as a ten-day vacation ended up being a month long We live on Long Island the Long Island Sound is right in our backyard. Hurricane Sandy rushed straight through our beach and town hitting huge old trees, which broke innumerable light lines; leaving New York without power or gasoline for weeks on end. Huntington, where we live, was without power for two weeks. At the end of Sandys visit another hurricane went through the Long Island Sound; this time gentler. Milder but still heavy rain and winds added to the damage already done by Sandy. So we cancelled our return ight home to New York three times the last time cancelled by the airline Our life as New Yorkers stopped now we were faced with our own culture here in Palmas del Mar. We just retired from Corpo rate America in April, so we were able to swiftly extend our Golf Tournament minivacation from the ten days originally intended. In New York we belong to a Country Club where my husband goes to play golf every other day. At Palmas del Mar he played with his old-pals from high school, family and ex-work friends almost every day. At Palmas we swam at our emerald blue Caribbean waters instead of the Long Island Sound. We had lunches at the Beach Club. I exercised every day at the Los Lagos Gym loved my Xco classes and Pilates classes with Betsy, and the spinning classes with Karla and Alexander. Took a three hour hike through our mountains here in Palmas del Mar with a group of friends; at its peak viewing the famous rocks of the Atlantic Ocean that have been painted so many times, with so much love, by Alida, our Palmas painter. We had lunches at the Country Club, dinners at our restaurants and shopped at Sonia Sanz Boutique. While New Yorkers were resolving Sandys outcome, we were stranded here in Paradise. We loved so much our by-chance-extended-vacation that this Christmas, we are going to spend two months maybe plus, depending on how the weather is like in New York. ...And if we get stranded again, who knows, probably, Huntington Bay, New York, will loose two of its beloved citizens to Palmas del Mar Paradise.
