editorscorner Keep yourself informed, register at www.LLPalmas.comHello my friends and neighbors As all of you know these last two months has been all about the rain, rain, and rain. But...we have to be thankful that none of the storms that have come by has really touched us (until the closing of this edition at least). But in spite of the rain and the storm alerts, as always, there has been plenty of action during the last two months. First I have to mention our rst PAC Member & Guest Tournament -outstanding, full house! But not only that, it rained until two days before it started and Irene came the last day of the tournament, right after the awards ceremony. Incredible!! The photos speak for themselves. Another highlight of these last two months was the Chez Daniel and Tapas Bar Jazz Weekend. Much like the rest of the month, it rained the week before and after but the jazz weekend was absolutely exquisite. Daniel you have to repeat it! Listening to good music under those trees was magical. Then, the two full moon parties at the Yacht Club during the past two months were a big success. During the last one, there was no moon and it was raining and windy but there was the basketball game between Argentina and Puerto Rico and the party was fantastic. Too bad for the moon that missed us! And nally, C Bar Kitchen in Style nally opened its doors. Its a beautiful place with lots of space and very well designed modern yet warm and cozy. The food is very good and the ambiance very chic. A good addition to our Palmas menu! On the other hand, PAC is very active realizing periodic activities in the Club House and the Beach Club for the members like the Italian nights, the sushi nights and the pasta nights. If you have missed them make sure you dont miss it next time. If you are a member be sure you receive the weekly electronic newsletter. Call PAC and notify it. Dont miss the action. We are really so blessed to have such a dynamic community. There so much always happening, all of them opportunities to share with our friends and family. 8 www.LLPalmas.com /OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 This hand written letter was found in the beach next to Solarea. Its a beautiful letter from Paul to his friend David who is about to get married (ctitious names have been used to protect their privacy). Unfortunately, David never received this letter. I am hopping that this publication will help to nd Paul, who could recognize his writing, and David (who is probably married by now) can nally receive his friends best wishes. If Paul reads this note, please contact Live & Life in Palmas to let us know who you are and, if possible interview you both and nally nd out...Who wrote the letter? By the way... I still have the original letter. Lets see if some day David receives it! Dear David I think that Irving uses Owen to be an instrument of God. I always thought that you would nd Gods spirit in others human beings and in the natural beauty of the world. My father once told me that all that matters is the man that you are and the lives that you touch. In your case, on the eve of your marriage to beautiful Anne, you now have the opportunity to touch lives as a father and as a husband. I know you will be a special father to those point guards and that your touch will echo through eternity. You have been a good friend to me. I wish you the most joyous journey throughout your life. The love you and Anne share will glow, and your children will carry that special love forever, just like Rose and I. So enjoy your trip to Vegas and beyond. Remember I will always be your friend and thanks for being a friend. Best Regards, Paul PS. I think Butler is going to win!

10 www.LLPalmas.com /OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 As summer came to an end, I came across one of my soccer coaches I hadnt seen in a while. When he saw me, he became overjoyed and told me he had been trying to contact me for a while. He said the team was getting ready for a tournament in Mexico, and he told me he wanted me to go. After talking to my dad, he decided to go with me and we were on our way. When we got there, we were taken to our hotel, and we had no time to rest or practice. We had a game the very next morning and that wasnt all. We were told that we were going to play the inaugural game in the Hidalgo stadium where the professional team plays. We were all very excited. As we were warming up, everybody wanted to take pictures and watch us play since we were from another country. We played that game against last years champions. We played with everything we had, but lost 5-0. After the game we were all pretty sad, but the coaches said the game was one of the best games they have ever seen from us. After that, we lost 2 more games. Then we made history. We tied our fourth game 2-2. Everybody was very happy, but bummed as well since we couldve won that game. Then came our nal game. It was our last chance to be the rst Puerto Rican team to win a game in that tournament. At the beginning of the game we were struggling to get a steady game going. After many plays, we got our rst goal and after that, the game just went our way completely. We ended up winning 4-0. After the nal whistle, we bursted with joy and started celebrating. In the bus, the calls were coming in like crazy. The news spread very quickly. Everybody wanted to know how we did and it was a very loud and crazy night. We didnt pass to the next round, but we made history. We then got to relax and socialize. We even got to see the professional team play in the stadium. It was a wonderful experience, and we had a blast. I realized the level of game play in Mexico is much higher than in Puerto Rico, and they focus much more in the sport than we do. Thats why a senator from Humacao, Jorge Suarez, went with us so he could study the soccer life in Mexico in order to make bet ter and bigger facilities in Puerto Rico so kids can get out of the streets and go play. I would denitely return, and I hope another experience like this one comes by soon. Doris THE BIG REVELATION A new Palmeo was born. Obed Bo rrero and Beatriz Archilla just had a new baby boy, Lorenzo Obed Borre ro Archilla. What a beautiful family! Now Maria Fernanda (who I call Reina Soa because she is like a little princes to me) has a brother to play with. Its good to see our community growing with this new generation of couples that share the joy of being a parent and assume their roles very seriously. As many of you know Obed is in our technology guru who is in charge of our web page www.llpalmas.com and of our local PHA TV channel 77 among others. Beatriz, Bea as many know her, is WALLO Radios general manager. She is an authentic Humacaea, daughter of Efrain Archilla, one of Puerto Ricos pioneers of radio. For me they are already a family and I have adopted Reina Soa as my niece (really as my granddaughter). Now I have a nephew. Her name is Doris Muoz Aponte and she has worked in the Members Lounge with Carlos Chinea for six years and I never knew of her beautiful voice and talent. What a surprise! Doris started studying communication and audiovisual at the UPR Humcao but soon her real vocation surfaced and currently she is studying Technical voice at the UPR, Rio Piedras. Her artistic name is Volumina Emmanuelle, which means subliminal sound. Since I was in high school, I used to write songs and have Reg gae bands such as Jamaican Station, Djav and Voluminal, this last one only plays my songs or the groups originals songs, she said. Music and art is in her genes. Her mother sings and writes songs; her brother has a doctoral degree from Kansas; her niece plays the cello and loves to sing; her sister, on the other hand, is photographer with whom she also collaborates. How would you describe your voice? I asked her. My voice is sweet and strong at the same time. It s a pretty voice, she said with condence. And it is true, Doris has a beautiful voice that surprised a lot of us the rst night at the Member & Guest Bodegar activity. More recently Doris created Trio Lounge. The band is made up of: Miguel Rive ra, a percussionist with a masters degree from Kansas University, and Jose Rivera, who happens to be a music teacher at Palmas Academy and a musician from the Arturo Somohano Philharmonic Orchestra. Both of them also play with the As Somos group. If you havent heard Doris, dont worry she will be singing at the Club House from now on until the rst Saturday of the month. If you cant wait you can always access YouTube and search for Volumina Emmanuelle. The Trio Lounge will be at the Main Club House from October on. Doris also belongs to the Orfen San Juan Bautista Choir, a very elite Choir in Puerto Rico. By: Lissette R osado

OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 / www.LLPalmas.com 17 the architect and creative mind who developed the Palmas conceptEsteban Padilla, author of Palmas rst master plan. He established the different densities of the areas, what was going to be built and how, the construction guidelines, the color palette and the ARB original bylaws among others. esteban PADILLAGOING BACK IN HISTORYPalmas lands were owned by a company called C Brewer Co., a legendary owner of many lands in Hawaii and other parts of the world dedicated manly to the sugar cane indus try. C Brewer Co. bought the land where Palmas sits today to develop a sugar cane industry and bring the Hawaiian techniques of the sugar cane industry to Puerto Rico but for some reason it never worked out. Time went by and one day Mr. Charles Fraiser, developer of the famous Hilton Head resort, visited Hawaii in search of a piece of land to develop a similar concept to Hilton Head in Hawaii. Being at the C Brewer Co. facilities, in Hawaii, Mr. Fraiser saw a photo of Palmas land on an ofce wall and asked the C Brewer executives why he wasnt shown that piece of land. They explained to Mr. Fraiser that the piece of land he liked so much was not in Hawaii but in Puerto Rico. Mr. Fraiser fell in love with what he saw in that picture and ew to Puerto Rico to see the land for himself. This was 1972. At that point, C Brewer executives called Esteban Padilla to receive Mr. Fraiser because at that time Padilla was working for C Brewer on a concept to develop Palmas. Charles Fraiser arrived to Palmas with an entourage giving orders everywhere. He was an emperor/dictatorial kind of guy, he even asked his employees to plunge into the beach to see how good it was. Charles bought the land and contracted Esteban Padilla to de sign and develop the concept of Palmas. WHEN EVERYTHING STARTED They contracted Esteban and he started working on the concept. Charles Fraiser was ahead of his time. He wanted an Eco friendly development, he was a visionary, Esteban said. But Esteban Padilla, himself was a visionary and a man of great ideas and vast education. He studied in Harvard, Duke, then the war came and when the war ended he lived in Italy and France. Later he worked with Muoz Marn and Teodoro Moscoso, Director of Puerto Industrial Company, who sent him to open a Puerto Rico ofce in Paris in order to attract industries to the island. During those years Esteban absorbed many of the European concepts he was going to apply later during his professional life. Among them the concept of Port Grimaud, a totally new concept at that time a small town completely dedicated and focused on tourism. I cant believe it has been two years since I interviewed Gaby Espasas and Maryjo. We talked about the impor tance of interviewing Esteban Padilla. Finally we made it and the three of us went for lunch with Esteban try ing to nd out how our community was conceived. For those of you that havent heard about Esteban Padilla, Este ban was the architect that worked on the conceptualization and development of Palmas del Mar; a man with great vision and culture. He was contracted by Charles Fraiser, creator and developer of Hilton Head, a resort town located on an island bearing the same name in Beaufort County, South Carolina.

18 www.LLPalmas.com /OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 THE KNOWLEDGE APPLIED TO P ALMAS Esteban worked hard and developed a complete concept of what Palmas is today, although some of his ideas were not put into practice. Palmas was conceived as a car-free living community where you would leave your car outside of the living area and be transported via trolley or golf cart. When I presented the concept to Mr. Fraiser he asked me how I knew that this concept was going to work. I answered: Because it already exists in Port Grimaud. The only thing you need to do is go see it rst hand, he said and added that two days later he re ceived a phone call from Charles Fraisers secretary to meet him, his wife and several members of his staff. He had rented a plane and went to visit Port Grimaud and other small towns in Europe. He approved the concept and construction began around 1973. There was construction everywhere: The Palmas Inn, the Sun Fun Hut, Beach Villa, Club Vila and Montesol. Charles Fraiser wanted to do something big and per fect. It was an investment of 850 million dollars at that time. Those were the days! Palmas was in the dance of the millions. Sea Pine brought in afuent people in charter planes to see the development and sell them villas. In 1973 the Palmas Inn opened with 23 suites. In this hotel, Charles Fraiser lodged his guests from Hilton Head who he ew to Puerto Rico and brought them to Palmas to sell them villas. But one day (around 1973-74) a guest registered in the hotel with his computer and a couple of assis tants. The man couldnt leave his room, not even for food (his assistant would order his food). He worked for days and days with his computer. Their assistant asked me one day to nd him a date as to get him out of the room for a night. I asked Esmeralda, Gloria Di, other of employees and even a woman from Palmas but nobody wanted to go on a date with him. The man stayed in his room working with his computer. Guess who was that man? BILL G ATES!!! recalled Esteban Padilla and laughed. Given that the Microsoft trademark was registered in the year 1975 -76, one has to conclude that Bill Gates was working on the development of Microsoft here at Palmas del Mar at the Palmas Inn!! Isnt that fascinating? I tried to reach Bill Gates to obtain a statement but it was impossible. Another anecdote Esteban recalled was the bread equipment. Palmas Inn had the most sophisticated bread maker in the world, it was imported from Paris but nobody wanted to use itever. Not a single baguette was baked in that oven, remembered Esteban. We believe that was so because, most likely, the instructions were in French!an incredible story... P ort Grimaud, France

OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 / www.LLPalmas.com 19 the Sun Fun Hut THEN CAME THE 80S AND THE BANKRUPTCYThen the early 1980s recession hit Sea Pine. Sea Pine had a debt of 500 million dollars and the development wasnt ready to produce income. The interest rate went all the way up to 20-21%. Sea Pine had approximately 10 projects go ing on at the same time. It was sad because they had to re all their employees. But Palmas has a spell, because the Chase Manhattan Executives also fell in love with Palmas and gave up other projects to save Palmas. During the process, Chase went bankrupt with Palmas as one of their assets. A t that time Esteban moved to San Juan and Palmas was eventually sold to Simplicity Patterns and later on to Maxam. But the roots, the foundations were already there and most of them still rule Palmas develop ment. Lets pay tribute to Esteban Padilla, a man with vision and dreams. The man responsible for this Paradise we call home... Palmas del Mar. He should be proud to see that his seed has ourished and his inuence still remains. Palmas Del Mar is a dream come true for any teenager. There are so many things to do, that it is impossible to get bored. My friends and I countdown the seconds for school to nish and the weekend to start to enjoy all of our amazing facilities. In a normal, sunny Saturday everyone will start texting each other to meet at the beach. Us girls will start working on our tan while the guys would be in the water fooling around. After the beach, our faces will be bright red instead of the golden tan we were going for. We then will nd a pool to get all of the sand out of our system. During our dive to the pool, the guys would be complaining about how hungry they are. Of all the options of food we could eat, we always end up eating pizza. That is the main food that our teenager bodies are lled with, but we never get enough of it. After stufng our faces, we need a way to burn all of the calories that weve consumed. So, we nd a court were we all can play basketball or volleyball. Us girls sometimes join in basketball and show the guys our skills. Finally the moon raises and Palmas nightlife begins. We all drive to Palmanova in our golf carts and hang around the golf cart parking lot. Here we meet new people or reunite with long, lost friends. Its amazing how a simple parking lot can be lled with teenagers socializing and having a good time. During the night we might go around Palmas wasting gas, but we always end up in that special parking lot. There you have it. A normal Saturday here in the resort paradise we call home. As we face the new challenges that lie ahead I want to encourage each of you to be an active participant in their solutions. Palmas is ours and is up to each member of the community to help guiding and carving its bright future. Be active in your regimes and in your condominium helping your community leaders in develop ing programs, improving your neighborhoods and protecting our homes. Please join your neighbors in maintaining our momentum and ef forts to keep our community as the most enjoyable place to live and play. There is nothing like Palmas and we want to keep it that way. Lets not forget: WE ARE PALMAS AND PALMAS IS OURS! Sincerely, Servando Our electrical situation: what, why and how... During the passage of the recent tropical storms Emily, Irene and Mara, the Palmas del Mar community as well as the rest of Puerto Rico, experienced serious power outages. In some areas of Palmas, power outages lasted anywhere from twelve (12) to (36) hours and outside of Palmas (for example in neighboring Junquito and Punta Santiago areas) outages lasted better than a week. As you may recall, power outages of this nature had not occurred in our community in the last four to ve years. Following this recent experience, PHA met with representatives from the Electrical Power Authority (PREPA) to have a clear understanding of the reasons for the recent major power outages, to obtain information about PREPAs plan to prevent future similar situations and to enter into collaborative assis tance in establishing, where possible, a maintenance preventive program for our community. We would like to share with you the knowledge obtained from these meetings so that you may pass it along to your neighbors and others being affected by such occurrences.What happened...Just as it happened in many other areas in Puerto Rico, the amount of rain during the passage of the recent tropical storms reached unprecedent ed levels. These heavy rains were accompanied by uncommon severe electrical storms and triggered major failures in the principal power supply systems in the Humacao region. High voltage feeder lines coming into Palmas were affected and the internal distribution system within Palmas consisting of multiple high voltage switching units ooded and shorted out bringing about complete power outages. Another major contributing factor to this situation was the humidity, dirt, and corrosion built up inside of the switching units breaking down its insulation and triggering their failure during power uctuations resulting from the storms and electrical discharges. Due to the prolonged period of bad weather and the inher ent dangers of repairs for PREPA personnel under those conditions, the recovery operations took much longer than normal. Worst off, often after repairs were completed in one sector, but Bt T ony Maldonado

OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 / www.LLPalmas.com 25 Our electrical situation: what, why and how... the continuing rain triggered failures in others further complicating such recovery actions. It is important to mention that during the handling of the power outage, Engineer Rafael Machin, PREPA Regional Director, was personally supervising the recovery operations at Palmas del Mar spending countless hours in this task. This reects PREPA commitment and level of interest in solving electrical problems at Palmas del Mar. PREPA has a power sub-station dedicated to feed electrical power to Palmas del Mar. However, two months ago an accident in PREPA main power station in Humacao knocked off El Miradero residential area and parts of the Mariana ward. The repairs of the damage in the main station may take close to ve months. In the meantime, PREPA had to connect the two areas temporarily to the substation dedicated to Palmas. This does not affect the supply capacity of the substation; however, an electrical failure problem in the feeder lines to those wards, affects the sub-station and as a consequence its distribution to Palmas Del Mar. This was a factor during the recent tropical storms. Again, this is a temporary situation which PREPA expects to overcome within the next three months and restore the dedicated sub-station to Palmas.What is being done.A PREPA maintenance and repairs brigade specialized in underground distribution systems has been assigned to Palmas del Mar. This brigade has been working daily for the past three weeks repairing faulty systems and bringing the distribution system to an optimum level. Switching units are being cleaned and repaired and all systems should be up to speed within the next 30 days. This brigade will remain primarily assigned to Palmas as this community has the largest under ground electrical distribution system in the Humacao region. A new pilot project is being introduced in the region and will include Palmas del Mar. This project will allow other than Palmas primary feeder lines, supply electricity to our community during power outages caused by failure of Palmas primary feeder lines. An investment of approximately $500,000 is being allocated by PREPA to include Palmas in this project. This project should be completed within the next six to twelve months. Also, as part of on-going PREPA major capital improvements program, old underground sys tems within Palmas are being replaced which will increase the reliability of the distribution system. Recently, PREPA began to replace the underground cabling system of Villa Franca at a cost of nearly $1.5 million. This project should be completed within the next sixty (60) days. Other areas such as portions of Harborside and the South District are being included in this capital improvement program.. PHA/PREPA collaborationAs a result of this evaluation, it is obvious that, in addition to the immediate repair actions being taken and the capital programs being executed, an aggressive preventive maintenance program needs to be instituted on a permanent basis. Such a program existed until almost twelve months ago. PREPA representatives made a commitment to reestab lish an aggressive preventive maintenance program in Palmas del Mar. Palmas del Mar Homeowners Association (PHA) agreed to collaborate in this preventive maintenance program by pruning trees near aerial power lines coming into Palmas and providing clean-up maintenance of areas surrounding the switching units and padmounted transformers. Also PDMU will collaborate with the tree pruning and providing ushing trucks to clean and vacuum switching units. PHA is the focal point monitoring PREPA actions during power outages and works very closely with PREPA in coordinating their construction and repair activity within Palmas. However, although PHA and PDMU support PREPA in their efforts, it is important to clarify that PHA nor Palmas del Mar Development Company or PDMU have any direct responsibility with the electrical distribution system of Palmas del Mar. Only PREPA qualied employees are allowed to go near the high voltage switching units and transformers which is where most internal problems take place. PHA does maintain the illumination poles and replaces light bulbs, with PREPA per mission, throughout Palmas but that is the extend of its direct involvement with the electrical system. PHA and PREPA will continue to meet periodically to insure the Palmas del Mar electrical distribution system is kept in the best possible conditions and that all programs and commitments are timely met. Please contact PHA at 787285-6425 should you have any questions or require additional information.

Palmas resilienceOnce more Palmas del Mar ability to recover from major disasters was amply demonstrated during and in the aftermath of tropical storms Emily, Irene, Mara and the heavy rains that dumped several inches of rain in our area. Floods, mudslides, power outages, fallen trees and an inordinate amount of debris in roads, beach and common areas were prevalent throughout the community. An emergency action team with PHA, PAC, PDMU, PDMPI, ARB, DCI Ranger American, Pennock, Yacht Club, the Mayor of Humacao and the State Emergency Response Agency under the leadership of PHA got quickly in high gear coordinating the emergency preparatory steps and implementing immediate recovery actions. Except for power outages in certain areas, within 24 hours after the emergency the community appeared nearly normal following clean-up operations and restoring services back to full operations. A special word of gratitude and recognition goes to the P almas Emergency Action T eam for their outstanding performance. The team composition included T ony Maldonado, T eam Leader (PHA), Rey Encarnacin (PD MU), Edd Siler (PDMPI), Alex De Jess (PHA), Juan Velzquez (PAC), Miguel Santiago (ARB), Chris Pennock (Pennock Plants & Design), Capt. Trash-collection servicesThe community-wide maintenance standards and architectural guidance require that trash be deposited in containers kept in underground receptacles or in areas not visible from public view. Trash collection services will pick-up the containers from your underground receptacles or from your storage areas outside of your home. If your storage area is inside your garage, service people are restricted from going into your property; therefore, you must bring out your containers on the same pick-up morning. There is no need for you to pull trash-bags out of your containers. Once your trash is taken away, it is your responsibility to clean up any items left behind and to place the containers back in their respective storage areas or underground receptacles. Please be mindful to advise other users of your property of this require ment and to ask them not to leave trash by the curb-side or outside of containers as animals may break into them and spread its contents. The restoration and preservation of this gift from Mother Nature is the most important legacy we can leave behind for generations to come. Please join our neighbors and friends who have already stepped forward to be counted in this noble and magnicent effort. Forest Fund ProjectThe community of Palmas del Mar is one that takes care of its responsibilities with proactive action. This has been amply demonstrated throughout its existence with outstanding results in every major undertaking it has approached. The restoration and the conservation of the Ptero carpus Forest at Palmas del Mar, Humacao, Puerto Rico, is a community initiative that, once more, gives proof of a social commitment by the Palmas community that extends well beyond its boundaries. The Forest is a patrimony that belongs to all of us and so its the responsibility of preserving this mag nicent natures gift. Through an aggressive, well-structured and planned green effort, the Palmas del Mar Homeowners Association (PHA), now responsible for maintaining this natural resource in optimum conditions, has initiated the restoration and conservation efforts required to protect the Pterocarpus Forest for gener ations to come. This initiative requires the decisive support of many people and organizations beyond the Homeowners Association. The Palmas del Mar Homeowners Association is not a stranger to this type of initiative as it has already successfully established several other collaborative conservation programs. The Palmas del Mar Habitat Conservation Plan and the Palmas del Mar Reforestation programs, joint efforts being conducted with state and federal agencies, are prime ex amples of the Associations track record in this type of endeavor. The integration of citizens, the private business sector and the government is essential to insure the needed resources are gathered to carry out this initiative. Immediate benets that will result from this initiative will be the establishment of a study and re search preserve, a new eco-tourism attraction and a boost to the local economy. Together we can preserve our natural resources a legacy for future generations!

The fact that somebody in our community is really committed to preserve that area in its natural state and the response of many residents that are donatenjoyed, not just from the outside, but by being able to walk deep into it, is very rewarding. By experience, we know how challenging and expensive is to maintain wild areas since weve been protecting and maintaining the small green buffer zone behind our yard plus the trees that border our property. It takes periodic visits of an agronomist to asses the trees and make recommendations to keep them healthy, plus constant maintenance against weeds. People like Servando are making it possible that Palmas join the worldwide effort to preserve nature and enhance the quality of life by keeping the beauty that the trees in their natural state bring. Trees and greenery makeour community a really special one. They also enhance the value of our properties, which is something practical to think about. Id like to share with you an old poem that was sent to me by a longtime friend, a true lover of trees, Gladys Hau, from Ponce. It talks better than a million words. If you havent, there is some thing you should know. You are missing so much! You are miss ing being part of a wonderful group of people that loves Palmas and works hard for our community. Its interesting to point out that Abraham Maslow, a prominent American psychologist, stated that the need to belong was a major source of motivation in human beings. He said that belonging was one of the basic needs along with safety, self-esteem and self-actualization. At Palmas we surely have an enviable community environment that we dont want to loose but we may risk it if the Club doesnt move along. Our strength has been recognized by the Government Development Bank (GDB), the press and other up-scale communities that have looked to us as an ex ample of what an empowered community can achieve. The other day at a gathering a good friend of mine, who lives in the community of Rio Mar, told me that in Rio Mar people continuously mention Palmas as an example of a community that has taken the bull by its horns. PAC has achieved, up to now, what many people thought was impossible with limited resources and just counting on its membership. PAC will succeed in their future negotiations with the bank. Be part of it.!! PROTECT OUR PARADISE We have to make it possible. We have come a long way but still have a long ways to go. We are all part of this. FIT NESS C EN TER Dear Friends and Property Owners: Last year, the recreational and sports facilities of Palmas del Mar as well as the restaurants associated with them were closed during several months. The impact on our community, the town of Humacao and the southeastern part of Puerto Rico was severe. Jobs were lost, commercial initia tives were closed, the income base of governmental entities was dislocated and property values were eroded. At that time, Palmas Athletic Club, Inc. (PAC), a not for prot corporation, was incorporated based on two premises. First, that the community of Palmas del mar would be the force and beneciary of that effort and secondly, that it would be a long term solution. On October 2010, PAC acquired the Golf, Tennis and Beach Club facilities. Since that time, PAC has been establishing its business plan and administrating the facilities. To date, we have recruited 1,150 members of which 1,000 are Palmas property owners. There are approximately 3,000 property owners in Palmas del Mar. Palmas recreational facilities and clubs are an integral part of the community concept, as vital as secu rity, maintenance, repairs and orderly conduct. We have a vested interest in its future continuity since it has a direct relationship with our property values. We encourage all property owners to become members of PAC. That would make it a vibrant organization, granting it the resources to provide several other activities and programs to all members with distinct opportunities for enhanced enjoyment of our com munity life. Our good friend and neighbor Dr. Lissette Bouret, is back, renovated and with the latest in beauty technology to make us look young and beautiful. Talking to her about this new technology reminded me of the words a doctor and good friend of mine told me years ago when I asked him about the possibility of me having plastic surgery done: Wait. You will see how technology will make beautifying and rejuvenating treatments less and less invasive. He was right. What Dr. Bouret brings to Palmas and Puerto Rico is really impressive: controlled heat therapy, laser, radio frequency, intense pulsed light (IPL) and other new technology technologies to make us look younger and fresher. Dont you want to look better? I do! (I think next year I will be celebrating my new fties). For those of you who dont know Dr. Bouret, she is a board-certied family physician, a former Miss Puerto Rico (1991), and a beautiful and brilliant woman who graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Puerto Rico, School of Medicine. Dr. Bouret is a caring and sensitive person that has always treated her patients as her friends and neighbors. Her new practice, Beauty by Bouret, is a medical spa focused on providing the lat est technologies and treatments in the eld. Her services include: weight loss, skin tightening, body contouring, skin rejuvenation, acne scar removal, hair removal, facials, and body wraps, among others. Her new and renovated facilities are at Palmanova Plaza # 135.SKIN TIGHTENING TECHNIQUESIn this edition we are going to focus on the Skin Tightening techniques. Something that, I am sure, interests many of us (women and men). As we all know as we age, the skin of our face and body becomes lax, particularly in the jowl and jaw line area, the nose to mouth lines and the skin around our eyes. Our aspect changes and we look tired and sometimes even sad. In my case, Ive been irting with the idea of having a lift or a mini lift, but I tend to be reluctant because in a surgery there is always a risk. How safe is the Heat Therapy and skin tightening technology, I asked Dr. Bouret. This is a very safe and effective treatment with extraordinary re sults. The Accent radio-frequency skin tightening is a painless treat ment that can be performed performed during your lunch hour. Radiofrequency is an innovative option to treat an ageing face and body that improves sagging skin, cellulite and stubborn fatty areas (like the hated double chin). This technology provides controlled heat therapy to deliver heat below the surface of the skin. This heat promotes new collagen production resulting in a smoother tighter contour of the face and neck. Stimulating enhanced blood circulation, the procedure also helps Dr.in fatty deposits and toxins. Its thermal activity serves to shrink fat cells and it is this heating action that causes the deep structures under the skin to tighten, and the results are visible shortly after treatment, explained Dr. Bouret and added that the procedure could be applied on the face, in your tummy area, buttock, arms or any other part of your body you want to tighten. This treatment helps smooth and contour any loose, wrinkled or dimpled skin anywhere on the body. The treatment can help atten your stomach, slim your hips and thighs, your face and neck and tone your upper arms. Many patients consider it after surgery or having a baby, explained Dr. Bouret. Dr. Lise Bouet is back...with new and revolutionary beauty technology!

OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 / www.LLPalmas.com 43 After nishing this interview, I was convinced. I wanted that tightening treatment for my face and neck. After loosing around 25 pounds and feeling good with myself, thats all I needed. Ok, lets do it. And I did, that same day! The results after one treatment are here for you to see for yourself. Dr. Bouret warned me that I was going to feel a heat sensation and that at some point it could be a little too much to tolerate but the realty was that I talked to her during the whole procedure and I hardly had any burning sensation. She did one side of my face rst and I could clearly see the difference. Im really impressed with the change in only one treatment. I have four more to go. I cant wait, but I need to, because you should wait around three weeks to let the new collagen develop. For the next edition you will see the nal results and we will report on the other big break through technology Dr. Bouret is bringing to Puerto Rico, like the Intense Pulse Light (IPL technology) that delivers high intensity pulses of light (not lasers) that can enhance the results of skin rejuvenation or hair removal therapy. We are bring ing also a new pain-free and permanent hair removal, laser treatment for acne scars, ne lines, sun damage spots, blood vessels and skin resurfacing among others. Dr. Lise Bouet is back... LISSETTE ROSADO: After one treatment, I can notice how my double chin has been reducde and the contour of my jaw is more dened. My face lines were softened. V ALERIE ARNOULD I have very delicate skin and its my fault for loving the Puerto Rican sun. My skin has become very abby and with spots. Thats why when I found out that Dr. Lissette Bouret was back with all this modern equipment I decided to visit her and began receiv ing the treatments immediately. 48 www.LLPalmas.com /OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 From California... to Palmas Palmas is perfect! We have it all: tennis, golf, horses and so many good friends in such a short time! If you didnt know Adriana & Jim Cur lands story you would think they have been in Palmas forever. Adriana belongs to one of the PACs tennis leagues, they have two horses ( well...three, Taina and her baby Azucar, just born) at our Buena Vista Ranch, they play golf, they go to the gym and have many good friends. Adriana grew up in Los Angeles, from a Cuban descendant family; Jim is from Orange County, California. They retired young and they were looking for a place to live but they didnt want a retired passive community living. We looked in a lot of upscale communi ties resorts like Coto de Caza and Laguna Beach in California, among other but nothing convince us, we wanted more of a change, some of them offer beach and golf, others tennis and equestrian or golf, tennis and equestrian but no beach. None of them had beach, tennis, golf, equestrian center, tness center-all in one place, said Adriana. After visit ing all this places Jim decided to look through the Internet. He searched for golf, tennis, equestrian and beach and... bingo! What came out of the search? Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico. I didnt re ally know were exactly was Puerto Rico, we had never been even close to PR, said Jim. This was May of last year. On June 3rd they were on a plane on their way to Puerto Rico. During the trip Jim asked Adriana that if Palmas were half as good at it looked on the Internet would she move? She said Yes! And sure they did. They came for ten days and looked for house for sale but, since the Club was closed, they decided to rent for a year until the Club situation was solved. Two days before leaving they found a house, signed a leasing agreement and went to California for their things. On August 10th they were moving to Palmas and, once the PAC was created, 7 to 8 months later, they bought their house. The rest is history. Even our dogs are happy. We brought two Siberian Huskies from Cali fornia and they love it here. They forgot they are from cold weather! said Adri ana and laughed. But... the story doesnt end here. The mother of their grandson, Tanita, and their grandson, Skyler came to visit them for three weeks and fell in love with Puerto Rico and the people. She likes the fact that in Puerto Rico kids dont stay at home with babysitters. Instead they Adriana belongs to the Ladies 3.5 Tennis Team"and couldn't be happier"Azucar, just like any toddler jumping around her mother, Taina. Adriana with her beloved Taina Jim with Bacard at Rancho Buena Viista

From California... to Palmas share with their parents and the commu nity. You can see them at Las Tapas, at the Tennis Court, at Palmanova running around everywhere while their parents eat and drink with family and friends. Tanita then decided to stay and raise her son in Palmas. She already has a job, found an apartment and is happy. Skyler is already enrolled at school and also happy. All the family and friends that have visited us love it here, said Adriana. What about belonging to the PAC? I asked. Wow, they said in unison, the Club has helped us, not only to know a lot of people and make good friends, but also to keep us active and in good shape. We do tennis, golf, we go to the Gym, do horseback riding and enjoy the activities and events. I never though I was going to be able to ride a horse because of my back prob lems, said Jim and added then we came to Palmas and discovered the Paso Fino Horses, now I could be four hours on a horse and with no problem. Its been a God given gift, stated Adriana who complained that Jim stole from her Ba cardi (her horse). We bought Bacardi thinking that it was going to be my horse. I fell in love with him. But when we brought it to Palmas, Jim told me: I think you need to nd a horse because Bacardi is mine. But now she doesnt only have a beautiful horse named Taina but also a little one--Azucar. May God give them lots of health to continue enjoying life with such energy and good spirit! Our formal welcome to Palmas del Mar! Its wonderful to have good people like you as part of our com munity. SEVERE WEATHER SAFE SITE at the Yacht Club... without the moon! There was supposed to be a Full Moon Party at the Yacht Club. It was cancelled because of Tropical Storm Maria. But then... Maria left. Why not then have a Basket Ball-Full Moon (even though the moon was no where to be see). To make a long story short, the party took place without the moon, without Maria but with a lot of enthusiasm from the people who congregated at the Yacht Club to see the Puerto Rico vs. Argentina game and end with dancing and partying until late at night. There was also a birthday celebration. Any excuse is good to have a party and share with friends and neighbors.

Roy van Broekhuizen, whose family ed Indonesia when he was 9 years old, and wife, Louise, also of Indonesian decent, started Laga Handbags. In Indonesia, Laga Handbags provides a place of peace, refuge and love for victims of disaster who are rebuilding their lives, one handbag at a time. Their goal is simply to end the suffering; to help the survivors rebuild the many lives torn apart by the tsunami. { }

74 www.LLPalmas.com /OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 CBar opens its doors.

After many months of expectation, CBAR Kitchen In Style opens its door with an elegant and intimate soiree for friends and business partners. The place is chic and elegant; it gives you the feeling of being in a lounge in Miami Beach or New York. C Bar was design by the well-known architect Nestor Paoli, who did a wonderful job. I want this space to resemble the sea, the waves, the light of the sunset, he said. He denitely achieved his goal. Many of the artwork, including the one behind the bar, are Paolis creations. Theyre some Luis Hernndez Cruz paintings also as part of the decoration. CBar is a family business and its going to be run by the four Aponte brothers: Carlos Miguel, Carlos Luis, Carlos Gabriel and Carlos Jos. Yes they are all Carlos. W onder why C BAR? Heres the answer: All are sons of the distinguished layer, Lic. Carlos Aponte and Julia Vega. W e are certain that this new bar and restaurant will contribute to Palmas enhancement and entertainment menu for the residents, the tourist, and us. Our best wishes for many years of success. CBar opens its doors.

76 www.LLPalmas.com /OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 Adamari Lopez absolutely sensational!Adamari Lpez, beautiful and sweet as always, made an astonishing presenta tion in the second season of Mira Quien Baila Univision. With the tango Te quiero pa bailar, Adamari left the judges speechless. One of them only asked her if she was Puerto Rican or Argentinean. The other two were impressed with her histrionic capaci ties and her dance mastery. Some of their adjectives were: impressive, lots of drama, punch, spectacular contour lines you paint the oor beautifuly, lives the charac ter, self-condence. And they run short. She was absolutely superb!! If you missed it check out at the Univision website. Look for Mira quien Baila and search for Adamari. In the mean time at Pura Vida Restaurant a group of her best friends, headed by Alexia Oquendo, got together to see the show and support her from a distance. We all studied together at school since we were little, Alexia told me. At Adamaris broth ers house Adalberto were Doa Idalina and Don Luis (her parents), Adalberto and David and her sister and her husband sitting in front of the TV monitor with pride and a big smile on their faces. They knew she was going to win!! And she did! We all celebrat ed her triumph! Adamari is dancing to support Susan G Komen for the Cure Foundation and all the money she will win from this contest will go to the Founda tion. Chapeau! Palmas is proud of you. For your talent, your sensibility and good heart and because of the born ghter you are. Mira Quien Baila

OCTOBER NOVEMBER 2011 / www.LLPalmas.com 77 Adamari Lopez A new chef in town! Jos Gomez is the new chef of C Bar Kitchen in Style. His cooking career started at six, preparing pancakes and scrambled eggs. But my vocation emerge from my university years in Boston were I was studying Business. I used to cook for all my roommates and at that time I worked as a waiter. Everybody told me I should become a chef and life took me by the hand to it. Working as a waiter in the Giorgio Armani restaurant in Boston I become a sub-chef. Those were my beginnings, working there I decided to study at the Culinary Institute of America were I graduate in 1995, Jos told me. After he graduated his career went in a spiral working in some of the most prestigious restaurants in NYC and San Francisco with renowned chefs such as Charlie Palmer of Aureole Restaurant, a four-star restaurant in New York. After working at Aureole for a year Mr. Palmier asked me where I in the world I wanted to work, that he would send me. My answer was that I wanted to work in San Francisco, California with Michael Mina, at Acqua--at that moment the best seafood restaurant in the city. Today Michael Mina is one of the most prestigious chefs of the nation. In San Francisco he also worked with George Moron and Roland Bas at La Folie Restaurant, the second best French Restaurant of the city and with Servand Porte at the Ritz Carton. I had good schooling, said Jos with evident pride. After he came back to Puerto Rico he had his own business for ten years: Gourmet on Location, a catering business. But his passion for restaurants called him back when he found out that Jean George was at the St.Regis in Puerto Rico to open a restaurant. I worked with him and the Aponte family until the doors opened; its been a blessing. We are doing of C Bar-a good restaurant.. THE SUVI COOKING METHOD One of highlights of this new restaurant is their cooking method call SUVI. We asked Jos to explain this method. SUVI is a very avant-garde cooking method that consist in cooking the meat or sh in their own juices. We receive the meat or the sh, we condiment it, we vacuum seal it and we cook them in a special container that moves the water and keep a constant heat temperature. That way the meat is cooked in its own juices and doesnt loose its nutrients. We use the stove only to sear the meat. The results are truly amazing! The churrasco (ank steak) melts in your mouth and it is simply delicious!
