Whiting Field News 6 Gopher Tortoise -Cont. from page 3 craft. The gopher tortoise gets its name for the ability to dig large bur rows, similar to a gopher. Their burrows are critical to the ecosys tem, providing protection for over 360 other species from heat and predators. Pictured is an unearthed gopher tortoise from a 2015 relocation initiative on NAS Whiting Field property.
