BY RISIE HOWARD
Region Legal Service Office Southeast

since Sept. 10, 2001, edu-
cational benefits for
you and your immedi-
ate family have increased. On
June 30, 2008, President Bush
signed into law a newVeterans
Education Assistance Act
called the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
The new bill is transferrable.
Transferability is a retention
tool and is based on time in the
armed forces, whether active
duty or selected reserves.
Members on active duty who
separate or are discharged
prior to Sept. 10, 2001 and
subsequently affiliate with the
selected reserves may qualify
for transferability if all other
criteria are met.

Read on for more details.
* What are the minimum
requirements for eligibility?
Service members must have
served 90 aggregate days or
more of active duty, beginning
on or after Sept. 10, 2001.
* Are there exceptions to the
minimum requirements for
eligibility?
Yes. Individuals honorably
discharged for a service-con-
nected disability who served
30 continuous days after Sept.
10, 2001, may also establish
eligibility.
* So what exactly do Iqualifyfor
under the Post 9/11 GIBill?

sive instate undergraduate
tuition in your chosen state

Bachelor housing

manager retires after

30 years of service

BY JAMES E. BROOKS
NAS Key West Public Affairs Officer

he spent a career
making homes for
military person-
nel and their families.
Now she's heading back
to South Carolina and a
home of her own.
During a lunchtime
ceremony on Monday,
Naval Air Station Key
West Commanding
Officer Capt. Steven
Holmes, co-workers and
other invited guests bid
farewell to the air sta-
tion's Bachelor Housing

Manager Pam Huff, who
retired after 30 years of
federal service.
"You made abig differ-
ence here," said Holmes
about Huff's three year
assignment here.
Perhaps Huff's biggest
accomplishment while
assigned here was tran-
sitioning bachelor and
geographic bachelor

ventional and aging

of study (active duty indi-
viduals may receive the total
amount of tuition and fees);
(2) A monthly stipend paid
based on the BAH of an E-
5 with dependants, in same
zip code as the school (edu-
cation online or by corre-
spondence may not qualify);
(3) Up to $1,000/year for
books and supplies;
(4) Up to $2,000 toward
licensure or certification
tests; and
(5) Up to $1,200/yr. for tuto-
rial assistance.
Individuals will generally
receive 36 months of full-time
educational benefits. The
benefits are only payable for
approved training and educa-
tion programs offered at col-
leges and universities.

* Okay, so I qualify for all of
these benefits if I served at
least 90 days of active duty
after Sept. 10, 2001?
Not exactly, the maximum basic
benefit is earned after serving
36 months of active duty or
after 30 days with a service-
connected disability discharge.
Benefits are pro-rated to a min-
imum of 40 percent of the basic
benefits based on time served,
from 90 days to 36 months.
Service Academy commit-
ments, ROTC scholarship grad-
uate commitments, and active
duty served as a requirement
for student loan repayment
does not count toward the
minimum eligibility require-
ments.

They misunderstood God's

uses the word "like" because
as much as we want to know
what's under the hood...it's not

Now I know there are a lot of
people who say they can point

Youngsters from the Key West Boys & Girls Club share lunch Monday with their peers from Naval Air Station Key West's

with the community.

The Naval Air Station Key West
Morale, Welfare and Recreation
(MWR) Youth Center on Sigsbee
Park played host to youngsters from the
Key West Boys & Girls Club in a "Together
We Play" event Monday.
"We decided to get together and have
fun," said Child and Youth Programs
Director Brian Pauly. "We are a proud
affiliate of the Boys & Girls Club organiza-
tion, and this is the second event we've
done together this year."
The first shared event was the circus in
early March.
About 200 youths converged on Sigsbee
Field to compete in friendly competi-
tions, eat cotton candy and chow down
on hamburgers. In addition to the chil-
dren, Boys &Girls Club junior counselors,
Youth Center teens and MWR's Summer
Teen Hires worked side-by-side to man
the games booths.
Boys & Girls Club Executive Director
Dan Dombroski said these shared pro-
grams, "are good for everyone. It's a spe-
cial day for the children."
The B&GC event is part of a continuing
effort to promote community partner-
ship, Pauly added.
"We are one of the few youth centers
in the Navy that is partnering with the
local Boys & Girls Club in shared events,"
he said.
In May the NAS Key West Youth Center
and staff received the Boys & Girls Club
Community Partnership Award dur-
ing ceremonies at the Boys & Girls Club
National Convention.
Youth Center Director Barry Greenfield
said this is one of many events to come
in the future to strengthen our ties to the
community.
