Keeping your head above water

BY APRIL PHILLIPS
Naval Safety Center Public Affairs

A ether you're plan-
ning to surf the
ocean waves, jump
in a lake, float down a lazy
stream, or just cool off in a
kiddie pool, chances are good
your off-duty activities will
lead you to a body of water
sometime this summer.
Swimming is good exercise
and a great way to cool off on
a hot afternoon.
Last year during the period
between Memorial Day and
Labor Day, only one per-
son assigned to the Navy or
Marines died in a drowning
accident, and that was an Air
Force 2nd Lieutenant assigned
to a Navy command. This was
down from summer 2007,
when two Sailors and one
Marine drowned.
Most people assume Sailors
and Marines knowhowto swim
- after all, they have to pass
rudimentary swimming tests
in boot camp. However, often
it's not their swimming ability,
or lack thereof, that leads to
water mishaps. Swimmers who
aren't aware of the water depth
or underwater hazards are at
added risk. Naturally, alcohol

bers is required to have an
appointed CFS. This training is
offered in KeyWest once a year.
Participants will receive the

works against any abilities the
swimmer might have. While all
the hazards of swimming can't
be eliminated, there are smart
decisions Sailors, Marines and
family members can make
to minimize the danger. One
of the most important is to
always swim with a buddy.
"Don't ever go to the beach
by yourself and always be
familiarized with the area
you're going to," said John
Williams, a recreation safety
specialist at the Naval Safety
Center.
He also recommended tak-
ing advantage of the infor-
mation Morale, Welfare and
Recreation (MWR) has to
offer.
"MWR has specifics on the
beaches within a base com-
plex and within the local area.
They'll also know any beaches
that are off-limits due to exces-
sive dangers."
If, in spite of planning and
precaution, you find yourself
in a dangerous rip current,
keeping a cool head can save
the day.
"Stop struggling!" Williams
said. "Swim parallel to the
shore until the tug dissipates.
If you try to swim against the
rip tide, you are swimming

against nature. You will get
tired and drown."
Another important rule
is never to swim under the
influence of alcohol. Given the
fact that many beach parties
include alcohol, it's important
to make a plan to stay sober
if you're going to be going
in the water. Many of those
Sailors and Marines who've
died in the water over the last
few summers didn't take this
advice.
"Most of the time, alcohol is
a contributing factor in those
drowning mishaps," Williams
said.
A trip to the ocean, lake or
community pool is meant to
be a good time and there are
many resources available to
help swimmers stay safe in the
water.

SBlue defeats Gold 29-16 in softball all-star game

C BY MC3 MICHAEL MCNABB
Southernmost Flyer

T aval Air Station Key
S West's Morale, Welfare
L and Recreation (MWR)
o Department held the Blue vs.
5 Gold Captain's Cup All-Star
- game at Sigsbee Park June 12.
The two teams were made
= up of the top two to three
players from each of the nine
teams that play in MW\R's
Captain's Cup Softball League.
Each player selected was voted
into the game by the players
on their team, respectively.
MA1 Shane Folendore (Gold)
and ASCS James Elswick (Blue)
were selected as the teams'
coach/captain based on their
departmental team's first and

second place standings going
into the all-star game.
After some brief warmups
the players took the field. At
the end of the first inning it
looked as though it was going
to be a pitching duel with both
pitchers tossing a scoreless
inning. The defensive battle
was short-lived, and Blue
jumped out to a 10-3 lead in
the third.
Gold responded valiantly
and tied the game. Seaman
James Gibbons led the way,
hitting a two-run homerun.
Not to be outdone, Blue hit
two homeruns in the fourth,
including a two-run, inside-
the-park homerun by AMI
Miguel Ortega, bringing the
score to 22-10. This time Blue

didn't give Gold any more
chances, holding them to just
three runs in the next three
innings.
With the score 29-13, Gold
had one more chance to make
a miracle happen. It looked
like that just might happen
when Gibbons hit another
homer, bringing in three runs,
but that was all the team could
muster and they fell to Blue
with a final score of 29-16.
Elswick named Miguel
Ortega the Blue team's MVP
who, on top of hitting an inside
the park homerun, was also
the team's pitcher.
