Facts about

alcohol

poisoning

Excessive drinking can
be hazardous to every-
one's health! It can be
particularly stressful if you are
the sober one taking care of
your drunk roommate, who is
vomiting while you are trying
to study for a rating exam.
Some people laugh at the
behavior of others who are
drunk. Some think it's even
funnier when they pass out.
But there is nothing funny
about the aspiration of vomit
leading to asphyxiation or the
poisoning of the respiratory
center in the brain, both of
which can result in death.
Do you know about the
dangers of alcohol poisoning?
When should you seek profes-
sional help for a friend? Sadly
enough, too many Sailors say
they wish they would have
sought medical treatment for
a friend. Many end up feeling
responsible for alcohol-related
tragedies that could have eas-
ily been prevented.
Common myths about
sobering up include drinking
black coffee, taking a cold bath
or shower, sleeping it off, or
walking it off. But these are just
myths, and they don't work.
The only thing that reverses
the effects of alcohol is time -
something you may not have if
you are suffering from alcohol
poisoning. And many differ-
ent factors affect the level of
intoxication of an individual,
so it's difficult to gauge exactly
how much is too much.

What Happens to Your
Body When You Get
Alcohol Poisoning?
Alcohol depresses nerves that
control involuntary actions
such as breathing and the gag
reflex (which prevents chok-
ing). A fatal dose of alcohol will
eventually stop these func-
tions.
It is common for someone

who drank excessive alcohol
to vomit since alcohol is an
irritant to the stomach. There
is then the danger of choking
on vomit, which could cause
death by asphyxiation in a
person who is not conscious
because of intoxication.
You should also know that a
person's blood alcohol concen-

Communication is the buzz-
word at BBC, and we strive
to improve our communica-
tion skills with our residents.
One way we plan to do this
is by hosting a Neighborhood
Huddle in your community
soon.
At the Huddle you can pro-
vide BBC with feedback on
what you like and dislike about
your current home, neighbor-
hood and our service. Children
will be entertained during the
event with a planned activity,
providing you the opportunity
to relax, and us as a company
to learn more about you and
how we can better serve those
who serve us daily.
Please watch your
doors for flyers on the next
Neighborhood Huddle.

What's going on at BBC

One topic frequently discussed
is the renovation of homes
targeted to military families.
Balfour Beatty is in the process
of adding 15 renovated units
back into its inventory and
transferring 50 vacant homes
into the renovation stage. Over
the next three to six months,
renovated homes will be com-
pleted and ready for new resi-
dents just in time for the big
summer rotation period.
New home construction is
in full swing at Trumbo Point.
Contractors are on schedule
and occupancy is on target for
mid-year 2010, with some new
homes coming back possibly
later this year.
Storage units need some
attention. If you are active duty

military, your unit is covered
by the renter's insurance you
have with your lease. Please
be aware that some units have
been broken into over the past
months, so take the time to
go by and check your units.
If you have any questions
please contact the Community
Management Office at Balfour
Beatty.
Summertime is coming
up and with that we have to
remind all of our residents of
some tips on proper outdoor
grilling. Grilling under your
carports is a hazard; you are
risking fire and the safety and
security of your family. So
please practice proper grill-
ing and do not cook under
your carports and refrain from
grilling right next to your unit.
If you have questions please
contact your Community
Management Office or the
base fire department both
will be glad to discuss and
answer your questions.

Maintenance Tip

Did you know that you can
submit your work orders
online? You can! You need
your resident ID number if
you have lost this contact the
Community Management

this invaluable tool can be
helpful in making your resi-
dence as comfortable as possi-
ble. Reminder the work order
will be considered a routine;

Navy, Coast Guard service chiefs sign Safe Harbor agreement

BY MC2 (SW) REBEKAH
BLOWERS
Chief of Naval Operations Public Affairs

C hief of Naval
Operations (CNO)
Adm. Gary Roughead
and Commandant of the
Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen
signed a memorandum of
agreement (MOA) April 1 for
the Safe Harbor program.
The Safe Harbor program
is the Navy's lead organiza-
tion for coordinating the non-
medical care of wounded,
ill and injured Sailors, Coast
Guardsmen and their family
members.
In the fall of 2008, the

Coast Guard approached Safe
Harbor to gain an understand-
ing of the non-medical care
management support provid-
ed to seriously wounded, ill,
and injured Sailors and their
families. Coast Guard units
are often located proximal to
Navy, and Coast Guard mem-
bers receive medical care at
Navy military treatment facili-
ties, where Safe Harbor non-
medical care managers are
currently located.
The signing of the MOA
between the CNO and com-
mandant reflects their com-
mitment to providing the best
care possible for Sailors, Coast
Guardsmen and their families.

"I think that this really gets
to the essence of our services
and how we as services care
for our Sailors. Through the
great work of our people at
Safe Harbor, we have devel-
oped ways to address those
who are seriously wounded,
ill and injured in order to bet-
ter provide for them and their
families," Roughead said. "We
are just really privileged and
honored that we can bring this
dimension of the Navy and the
Coast Guard together in a way
that benefits our Sailors and
their families."
Through proactive leader-
ship, the Safe Harbor program
provides seriously wounded,

ill and injured service mem-
bers a lifetime of individually
tailored assistance designed to
optimize the success of their
recovery, rehabilitation and
reintegration activities and to

give their families the support 3
they need to get through that
sometimes life-long process.

TIES gives back

who give to them

Tangela Edwards, a Transition to Independence, Employment and Success (TIES) student,
poses for a photo at the TIES 4th Annual Appreciation Luncheon April 3 at Sunset Lounge on
Naval Air Station Key West's Sigsbee Park.

NAS Key West Commanding Officer Capt. Steve Holmes accepts a
TIES Supporter Award from a TIES student.

Luncheon attend-
ees enjoy a ban-
quet-style lunch
at Sunset Lounge
as TIES students
honor individuals
and departments
whose efforts
allow TIES to
provide services
to students, orga-
nizations who
develop training
opportunities
for students,
businesses
who employ the
students and
"Unsung Heroes,"
who lend a help-
ing hand.

TIES Instructor Ruth Holland and Ben Black, a TIES student, read the name of an awardee at the luncheon. TIES' mission is to provide community-based training and
coaching, promoting full independence in competitive employment and/or supported employment, along with independence in daily living skills and recreational activities
of students with disabilities ages 18-22.

Holland leads a round of applause for TIES Star Award Winner Marty Jacquette, TIES transition spe-
cialist. The award is given to recognize an individual who has gone above and beyond to ensure the
success of the TIES students. Jacquette also received a rocking chair the group had refurbished.

Luncheon attendees gather and talk around pictures of TIES
projects, training and recreation.
