www.panachejamagazine.com| panache jamaica|April 201015 PERISCOPE what is your muse? Ali Lue shares her thoughts on her inspiration for her designs worn by queen ifrica in concert F irst of all, I have to say I get all my inspiration from the Lord, thats how my designs get started. With prayer and then it all comes to life. For the design Queen Ifrica wore for the Shaggy and Friends show I wanted the design to have an international appeal more European but keeping to Ifrica’s roots. For Rebel Salute, Ifrica wanted something militant. The design was created with the audience in mind, more hardcore roots. I wanted to give her a design that represented her authority as the “Fyah Muma” but yet shows Queen Ifrica’s femininity. The Sud Bar’s mantra is keeping it clean – naturally" Your skin will not only be cleansed, but also nourished in the most appealing way.Gillespie’s view is that we don’t need to expose our skin to more chemicals than it needs. “A simple beauty regimen is essential, allowing nature to do the work for you,” she says. Trained and employed as a chemist, and with # ve years’ experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Gillespie has made a career testing innumerable consumer products, as well as researching and evaluating beauty, health, and environmental products for Good Housekeeping Magazine. “There was always a nagging urge to create something of my own,” she says. “So when the idea of soaps came to mind, I knew this was it.”In early 2006, The Sud Bar produced its # rst batch of soaps, followed later on by the conception of the company, which is operated by Gillespie and her business partner. Since then, ten signature avours have also been created, all with a “natural island” quality, which comes as no surprise, since she is Jamaican.Gillespie, who also has an M.S. in Environmental Studies, hopes to signi# cantly contribute to keeping our planet healthy. Consequently, her vision for The Sud Bar is to further research and use nature’s resources to create soap bars and skin care products of excellent quality. With a surname made famous in the racing fraternity by his late uncle, Alfred “Uji” Chen, who built the Dover raceway facilities in St. Ann, young Alan was always expected to yield to his racing heritage and follow in both his father (“Foji” Chen) and uncle’s footsteps. A construction contractor by day, Alan spends his nights and weekends in pursuit of speed: building, repairing and tuning a race machine that in 2009 went far beyond what any other car has achieved so far in Jamaica. To immediately enlighten you on what we are dealing with here, take a look at the fact sheet below: Car: 1987 AE86 Toyota Corolla GTS, rear wheel drive with limited slip differential. Engine: Toyota 4A GE turbocharged 1600cc 16 valve twin cam. Driven and built by Alan Chen from shell up with help from Xavia Murray of Murray’s Auto Development and consultation from Bill Lewis. Originally built to compete in the Spot Valley Sports Complex million dollar championship as part of the Autosource team, and placed first in the championship. Car was improved to compete in other events based on its success. Circuit racing @ DOVER raceway : Two 1st places in IP33 & MP2, three 2nd places in MP2 including meet champion for the 2009 Caribbean Invasion meet and a best lap time of 1 minute 26.1 seconds. Having what is likely to be the closest finish in the history of Dover Raceway crossing the line just inches behind Peter Jaggon’s Honda CRX. Rallysport: Rally Jamaica 2008 : three 1st places for legs 1, 2 and New Kingston SS in Class JA4 and 2nd fastest 2wd overall. 2 nd place Class JA4 JMMC/Spot Valley Sprint #6. Drag Racing @ Jamwest Speedway : best elapsed time of 11.526 seconds. Sponsors Allied Concrete & Equipment Brokerage, A1 Jamaica's All Rounder Race Car and Driver. Alan is planning to make more improvements to the car in an effort to compete in a full season of Dover and then Jamaica Rally in 2010. Look out for him as a force to be reckoned with on the track, as besides his racing exploits where timing is crucial, his driving skills as an entertainer in the drifting discipline have possibly gained him even more recognition. With skills honed over the years in the dexterity series put on by both the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club and the Montego Bay Motoring Club where he has won numerous trophies and awards…too many to mention here, and perfected at various locations in and around Mandeville, Alan is one of the most talented proponents of one of the world’s fastest growing forms of motorsports…drifting. Unable to keep all that talent bundled up, he has put on the first real, tire shredding, “on your feet” drifting display at Dover Raceway at the end of several of his circuit races, and it is a toss-up as to who enjoys them more: the fans or the driver. havaianas havaianas Authorized Retailers in Kingston, JamaicaAmmar’sThe Village & Mall Plazas24 Constant Spring Road, Kingston 10Shop 3 Sovereign Centre, Kingston 6876-926-4667 / 876-926-7399The Craft CottageThe Village Plaza24 Constant Spring Road, Kingston 10876-926-0719 / 876-960-6978Lee’s Fifth AvenueManor Park Plaza, Kingston 8876-925-1628Sovereign Centre876-978-3851Lee’s Family Pharmacy86B Red Hills Road, Kingston 10876-931-1560Boulevard Supercentre, Kingston 20876-934-0077Kerry ManWomanHome18 South Avenue, Kingston 10876-929-2096Manor Park PharmacyShop 1, Manor Park Plaza,Kingston 8876-924-1424876-924-1425Liguanea Drug and Garden Store134 Old Hope Road,Kingston 6876-977-0066

During our time of tragedy, it was the artistes who boosted the morale of the victims and who rallied together to uplift the spirits of the people. The impact that the creative industry had on an ailing nation was profound and we can understand the overwhelming importance of the Haiti Art and Fashion Project and how necessary it is to restore and develop this sector”. The Ambassador further noted that Cuba had worked systematically with Haiti for the past several years, in an effort to aid development there. In addition to the Ambassador’s endorsement of the Haiti Art and Fashion Project, he also indicated that Cuba would be facilitating the participation of a delegation of designers, models and performing artists from that country to participate in CFW. Pulse will also support the delegation’s presence at CFW. Pulse CEO Kingsley Cooper noted that it will be Cuba’s rst time participating in the event, “...for a good purpose, to raise funds and awareness for Haiti’s restoration and development of its creative industries.” Cuba endorses Haiti Art & Fashion Project I n a bid to strengthen cultural exchanges and cooperation between the countries in the Caribbean, executives of Pulse Investments Limited, organizers of Caribbean Fashionweek, met with Cuban of" cials this week to discuss that islands participation and representation at the annual regional event.Cuban Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Yuri Gala Lopez, expressed a keen interest in the event and also pledged Cuba’s support for Pulse’s newest creative industry initiative, ‘The Haiti Art and Fashion Project’. |panache jamaica |www.panachejamagazine.com APRIL 201040 Lately I’ve been ge* ng more and more ques# ons and queries from women about their founda# on. This seems to be an area that befuddles many women and seemingly in# midates them. I’ve got you covered. In this feature I’ll try to shed some light on this basic but very crucial area of your makeup applica# on. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to apply founda# on all over the face; it is okay to apply on a ‘where needed’ basis. The trick to it is to blend properly and to ‘set’ or dust the whole face with translucent powder a" erwards. Foundation types $$$Liquid:$ Gives the sheerest coverage. It might separate if its oil based so you’ll need to shake (not s# r) before use, wa-ter based is best to prevent clogging of the pores. Doling out amounts can be tricky if the product doesn’t come with a pump. Whipped$or$Mousse$founda0$on:$$ Gives light to medium coverage. Has a light or ‘puddingy’ texture that makes spreading a cinch. Cream$to$powder : This gives medium to heavy coverage. It’s creamy and usually dries to a sa# ny nish. It is very good for giving skin a dewy look. I nd that some formulas s# ll require a li$ le powder to ma$ e the skin especially in those per-sons with oiler skin types. Cream$1s0$ck2$founda0$on: Gives the heaviest coverage which makes it excellent for print work. It is usually emollient which makes it easy to spread but can make you shiny a" er a while. Spray$Founda0$on : This is s# ll fairly new and is likened to airbrushing. The results are not typi-cal though and use is somewhat tricky as there is very li$ le control and consistency is hard to maintain, hence coverage can range from anywhere between light to heavy all in one go depending on how heavy handed you are. It can do a real number too on your hairline, eyebrows, clothes and other areas you weren’t really trying to cover because of the nozzle.Selecting your shadeWhen selec# ng your founda# on, the color should be tested on the jaw line as it is truest in color to the rest of your body. Never apply it to the hand or the inside of the wrist+ If so, you’ll end up with founda# on that is too light and it will give a ghostly cast to the skin. Selec# ng the perfect shade and formula (liquid, cream to powder etc) takes # me; don’t be discouraged if the pillars of your foundation BY LATOYA JONES

Invest in a good foun-da# on and buy one that is commen-surate with your skin’s needs. This is not the area or the product on which you skimp.Remember … Founda# on goes on best a" er you’ve applied moisturizer…it helps it to glide on easier A li$ le founda# on goes a long way, see that you don’t pile it on+ A few drops of your liquid founda# on mixed in with equal amounts of moisturizer creates a great # nted moisturizer. It goes on sheer and is perfect for day# me wear. When applying founda# on, don’t pull on the skin, use short, quick strokes (called s# ppling)…start in the centre of the face and work your way out. Dampening your wedge before applying foun-da# on helps to thin it and spreads it more evenly. |panache jamaica |www.panachejamagazine.com APRIL 201050 A utism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. These signs all begin before a child is three years old. Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize; how this occurs is not well understood. The two other autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are Asperger syndrome, which lacks delays in cognitive development and language, and PDD-NOS, diagnosed when full criteria for the other two disorders are not met.CharacteristicsAutism is a highly variable neurodevelopment disorder that rst appears during infancy or childhood, and generally follows a steady course without remission. Overt symptoms gradually begin after the age of six months, become established by age two or three years, and tend to continue through adulthood, although often in more muted form. It is distinguished not by a single symptom, but by a characteristic triad of symptoms: impairments in social interaction; impairments in communication; and restricted interests and repetitive behavior. Other aspects, such as atypical eating, are also common but are not essential for diagnosis. April$is$World$Au0$sm$Month Autism’s individual symptoms occur in the general population and appear not to associate highly, without a sharp line separating pathologically severe from common traits.Social BehaviourUnusual social development becomes apparent early in childhood. Autistic infants show less attention to social stimuli, smile and look at others less often, and respond less to their own name. Autistic toddlers differ more strikingly from social norms; for example, they have less eye contact and turn taking, and are more likely to communicate by manipulating another person’s hand. Threeto ve-year-old autistic children are less likely to exhibit social understanding, approach others spontaneously, imitate and respond to emotions, communicate nonverbally, and take turns with others. However, they do form attachments to their primary caregivers. Most autistic children display moderately less attachment security than non-autistic children, although this difference disappears in children with higher mental development or less severe ASD. Older children and adults with ASD perform worse on tests of face and emotion recognition.Contrary to a common belief, autistic children do not prefer being alone. Making and maintaining friendships often proves to be dif! cult for those with autism. For them, the quality of friendships, not the number of friends, predicts how lonely they feel. Functional friendships, such as those resulting in invitations to parties, may affect the quality of life more deeply.Repetitive behaviorAutistic individuals display many forms of repetitive or restricted behavior, which the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R) categorizes as follows. Stereotypy is repetitive movement, such as hand apping, making sounds, head rolling, or body rocking. Compulsive behavior is intended and appears to follow rules, such as arranging objects in stacks or lines. Sameness is resistance to change; for example, insisting that the furniture not be moved or refusing to be interrupted. Ritualistic behavior involves an unvarying pattern of daily activities, such as an unchanging menu or a dressing ritual. This is closely associated with sameness and an independent validation has suggested combining the two factors. Restricted behavior is limited in focus, interest, or activity, such as preoccupation with a single television program, toy, or game. Self-injury includes movements that injure or can injure the person, such as eye poking, skin picking, hand biting, and head banging. A 2007 study reported that self-injury

PAGE 51

www.panachejamagazine.com| panache jamaica|April 201051 at some point affected about 30% of children with ASD.No single repetitive behavior seems to be speci! c to autism, but only autism appears to have an elevated pattern of occurrence and severity of these behaviors. How is autism diagnosed?ASD varies widely in severity and symptoms and may go unrecognized, especially in mildly affected children or when it is masked by more debilitating handicaps. Very early indicators that require evaluation by an expert include: no babbling or pointing by age 1 no single words by 16 months or two-word phrases by age 2 no response to name loss of language or social skills poor eye contact excessive lining up of toys or objects no smiling or social responsiveness.Later indicators include: impaired ability to make friends with peers impaired ability to initiate or sustain a conversation with others absence or impairment of imaginative and social play stereotyped, repetitive, or unusual use of language restricted patterns of interest that are abnormal in intensity or focus preoccupation with certain objects or subjects in" exible adherence to speci! c routines or rituals. The Jamaica Autism Support Association (J.A.S.A.)JASA’s main goals are to provide support for all parents dealing with the diagnosis of Autism and to raise awareness about Autism in Jamaica. The Jamaica Autism Support Association (J.A.S.A.) has been an active group giving support to parents of children diagnosed with Autism from November 2006. The Association gained NGO status in June 2007.JASA meetings are on the last Saturday every month at the YMCA.Contact information:E-mail: jasa.jm2k9@gmail.com The YMCA can also be contacted for more information 21 Hope Road, Kingston 10. The three disco albums she recordedPortfolio (1977), Fame (1978), and Muse (1979)—generated considerable success in that market. 5. T oward the end of the 1970s, Jones adapted the emerging New Wave music to create a different style for herself. Still with Island, and now working with producers Chris Blackwell, Alex Sadkin and the Compass Point All Stars, she released the acclaimed albums Warm Leatherette (1980) and Nightclubbing (1981). 6. B oth albums however also included a few tracks co-written by Jones herself, such as “A Rolling Stone”, “Feel Up” and, most notably, the post-disco dance track “Pull Up to the Bumper” which went on to spend seven weeks at #2 on the U.S. 7. P arallel to her musical shift was an equally dramatic visual makeover, created in partnership with stylist Jean-Paul Goude, with whom she had a son, Apollo. Jones adopted a severe, androgynous look, with square-cut hair and angular, padded clothes. 8. G race Jones is a contralto vocalist. 9. |panache jamaica |www.panachejamagazine.com APRIL 201056 K eep the faith! That may sound like another of those religious euphemisms and in some ways it probably is but before you switch off completely and go off in search of something more appealing to read, open your mind to the possibility that the ‘faith thing’ if consciously applied, could be a powerful, potent and purposeful mechanism to help you get more out of the life you are living or maybe even help you to get the life you want to live and all without a religious icon in sight (unless you choose otherwise of course).Faith is simply a con" dence, a belief, a conviction, an assur-ance, a trust or reliance in or on someone or something. On that basis and on the pre-sumption that where you are currently is not exactly where you want to be or where you want to remain, faith could be the very tool to help you make that leap and unlike the more expensive resources in the world today faith is completely free and you don’t need anyone else to make it work for you The only thing required is for you to connect with it and to use it purposefully. Keep The Faith! by Carolyn Pyke And the great thing is you don’t even have to learn a new skill be-cause faith is already alive and well in your life; think about when you go to bed at night believing that you will see another day; when you put on that out" t and leave the house and believe other people will think you look good; how about when you plan ahead for that special birthday/holiday/surprise etc. or when you spend money on your credit card or even when you go on your rst date. You approach all of these and more with your faith # ag # ying high.If you purposefully applied faith to each and every situation in your life would it make a difference? Pause for a moment and imagine your life just the way you have always wanted it to be. Would faith help you to get there sooner? Put it to the test, after all the worst that could happen is that you are exactly where you are now.Use the power that faith gives you to: r Just be you. Instead of just writing a daily to do list write a daily to be list as well and give who you are attention. Who do you want to be? r Believe in who you are. We waste a lot of time trying to be someone or something else. Ditch the super" cial stuff and let the real you (warts and all) shine through. r Raise the bar. Aim high, set lofty goals. Associate yourself with people successfully doing what you want to do. Don’t just settle for the scraps that life throws your way. r Be open. Don’t think you know it all or have seen it all, relegate ‘I know’ to the back of your vocabulary cupboard and be open to another perspective, another way of think-ing opportunities are everywhere you just need to be open to see them. Have faith and live life like you mean it!

His legendary cult classic The Harder They Come (1972), which introduced Jamaican ghe$ o life and reggae music to global audiences, remains the most acclaimed lms to come out of the region. Last March Henzell was posthumously honoured in Los Angeles by the American Cinematheque. The tribute included screenings of the rst 35-mm print of The Harder They Come and Henzell’s second feature No Place Like Home which was completed in 2006. Rebecca$Robinson and Emiel$ Martens interviewed Henzell in Kingston just a few months before he passed away.Words$by$Rebecca$Robinson$and$Emiel$Martens Photography$by$Emiel$MartensIn$39745$ The Harder They Come $marked$ the$6$rst$feature$6$lm$ever$to$come$out$of$Jamaica8$How$did$you$get$the$idea$of$making$the$movie?“I wanted to make a movie and I wanted it to be very Jamaican. I started o% with the character of Ivan and then casted Jimmy [Cli% ] for the role. Jimmy’s story was his music I realised that the music thing was very, very strong. You could feel the vibe. It was there – you know how you can feel a vibe? The way I shot the lm was much more free. I relied on improvisa# on and wri# ng on the set, wri# ng while in produc# on, wri# ng while edi# ng, and so on. I don’t have anywhere a nished script of The Harder They Come .” Why$do$you$think$that$your$6$lm$became$such$an$interna0$onal$success?“I was concerned about making a li$ le Jamaican crime movie with poli# cal ideas. I had absolutely no idea that it would resonate throughout the world. The Harder They Come was helped considerably by Bob Marley and the Reggae Revolu# on. But the lm’s ini# al success was mainly due to my own e% orts. I discovered that in order to sell The Harder They Come abroad, I had to carry it overseas myself. It took me six years and over 35 countries, going round and round and round with the # n cans, selling. My life was divided between travelling and wri# ng in the bush. How I would do it? I went to a country, di% erent ci# es, go to a hotel, take a taxi, drive around and look at all the cinemas, decide which cinema I wanted it to play, go to nd the owner, and nally sell the picture. That took a long # me, but in the end The Harder They Come grew and grew around the world.”$A;$er$ The Harder They Come $you$ set$out$to$make$your$second$movie5$No Place Like Home 8$What$was$it$ about?$$“ No Place Like Home was the second story in a Jamaican trilogy. This Jamaican trilogy assumed two Jamaicas: Jamaica the City and Jamaica the Countryside. While The Harder They Come was the city seen through the eyes of a country boy, No Place Like Home was the countryside seen through the eyes of a woman from New York, a big city. And then I write Power Game a novel, which dealt with the catch between those two spirits to control the island.”No Place Like Home $was$shot$in$the$

I wanted to break new ground in realism, to put a magical / avor to it. So I evolved a theory that half of the lm would be spontaneous and half of it would be controlled. Various people in Hollywood, like Francis Ford Coppola, loved The Harder They Come and wanted to help me. But the more I explained what I was trying to do, the less enthused they became. I eventually ran out of money, put my own money in it and ran out of that. Then they said the lm had disappeared, while it was virtually complete. I gave up the lm industry altogether, un# l somebody brought me an old edi# ng tape of No Place Like Home That started it all over again. No Place Like Home is the best work I have ever done, a much more interes# ng lm than The Harder They Come It should be out in a few months.” It$must$be$exci0$ng$0$mes$for$you8$Your$second$6$lm$is$coming$out$soon$and$recently$the$stage$musical$version$of$ The Harder They Come $opened$in$London$to$packed$theatres$and$rave$reviews8$The$story$apparently$s0$ll$stands$up$today8$$$$ “The di% erence between the lm and the play is that, thirty years ago, the lm was a warning to the main character Ivan about how dangerous Babylon was. Now the warning is to Babylon about how dangerous Ivan is. Instead of being just a li$ le country boy who they can just step on and kill, he is now an idealist who has fought in the revolt.”What$are$your$plans$for$the$future?“Well, my personal dream is to get a studio, and to turn out some really good stu% that can become interna# onal and travel around the world. There’s all this wri# ng talent out there and young directors are coming up. I am ge* ng old. I don’t want to write, produce or direct anymore. Basically I want to see young talent coming around and doing what we Jamaicans can do. My hope for the industry as a whole is that it will strengthen Jamaica’s sense of freedom. I think that’s the most important aspect of authen# c cinema.”Perry Henzell died on cancer on November 30, 2006 at his home in Treasure Beach, Jamaica, one day before the Jamaican premiere of No Place Like Home at the Flashpoint Film and Music Fes# val in Negril.
