FOREWORD

This is the first statistical yearbook for the Turks and Caicos
Islands, the beginning of a series which will be updated annually
in future years.

As the development of our islands continues we will increasingly
need facts and figures to inform our debate and decisions it is
difficult to talk meaningfully of the direction our development
should take when we have no clear idea of where we are starting
from. This yearbook is a start in contributing the factual
information that we need. It is not totally comprehensive, it
would be unrealistic to expect that given our current resources,
but it is a start that can be built upon in the future. I trust
that you will find it useful.

If you have any comments or enquiries about the contents please
contact the Government Statistician (Financial Secretary's Office,
South Base, tel: 2372).

Notes:
1.Adult is defined as 14 years and over.
2.1989 data include 'belongers', 1104 work permit holders (all of whom
are assumed to be working) and 69 residence permit holders (all of whom
are assumed to be unemployed.
3.The data for 1989 are not fully compatible with data for earlier
years. As no count can be made of illegal immigrants the work force is
to low as is the total adult population. The figures for economically
inactive also appears low.
