Cooperative Agreement between the
Research and Engineering Education Facility (REEF) and the George A. Smathers Libraries,
University of Florida
This document establishes a cooperative program for the integration of REEF holdings into the online UF
Library Catalog. The goal of this effort is to expand access and university awareness of the resources held
in the REEF, in support of the University's mission of research and teaching.
REEF Library Description
In 1994, Judith Shivers, Program Assistant at the REEF (formerly called GERC Graduate Engineering
and Research Center) began the collection for the REEF Library. At that time, faculty, students and staff
were moving to a new building, and "faculty cleaned out for the move." So she began taking the outdated
desk copies of books that the faculty did not want. Donation upon donation poured in from faculty and
students, including one major donation from the estate of one of their Adjunct Faculty about 200 books.
Ms. Shivers continues this effort today and hopes to acquire newer materials to add to the collection.
REEF Director Dr. John Rogacki supports the REEF Library and the effort which Ms. Shivers has put
This unique collection consists of literature focused in aerospace, mathematics, physics, electrical and
computer engineering, chemistry, biology a broad overview of the sciences in relation to work being done
at the REEF.
The collection consists of over 1400 books, periodicals, and conference proceedings, and is consulted by
researchers, both faculty and students, who work at the REEF. It is invaluable to students, who need
textbooks for courses and research, and it is an asset to faculty and researchers who need to find
information for their research areass.
The REEF Library is available to all. Library material can circulate to UF faculty, staff, and students.
REEF staff welcomes any visitors during their opening hours to use the collection on site. The REEF
Library is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5PM; it is closed on University holidays. The REEF will
not participate in Interlibrary Loan activities.
Monies for collection development will come from project grants that are funding the research efforts at the
REEF. Requests for library material purchases will go through the REEF Program Assistant. The budget
for collection development will be handled by the REEF staff and will be determined on a year-to-year
basis. The Engineering Outreach Librarian is available to help with collection development for the REEF,
however, the purchase and shipping of materials will be the REEF's responsibility. REEF will purchase
books and have them sent directly to their facility for cataloging, which will be done by the REEF staff.
REEF will catalog items. Bibliographic records will be derived from the UF Library Catalog and
alternative sources or created via a cataloging template. Article level cataloging will not be done, and those
materials are excluded from this agreement.
REEF will assume full responsibility for maintaining its library collection. When items are withdrawn or
lost, REEF will update the library catalog.
REEF will maintain a separate circulation system.
