Fight Air Pollution

Plant Trees

By JUI.GAIDDY
Third la A Series
Imagine hearing at the end ol Ihe evening's televi-
sion weather forecast the day's 'smog count* and a
-smog forecast.' with advice on whether or not to wear
a gas mnak lo work the next morning.
Sound fantastic?
Luckily lor the area s resi
still is fantasy and not fact.
Yet the sources nor the same kind of air
found in larger cities in the rest ofl the count
exists here in south Palm Beacn County.
Sulphur-laden smoke, which comes principally Irom
industry's coal and oil lires reacts with atmospheric
moisture to produce sulphuric acid. Because tourists
arc the industry for the Boynlon Beach. Delray Beach
and Uoca taton area. pollution from this source cannot
be counted as a major, immediate air pollutant.
Particulates. or particles In the air such as dust.
smoke, or ash often carry pollutants that are breathed
into the lungs and cause health problems. This results
Irom open fires burning,. and although not done on a
large scale here. south county residents had a chance to
see and smell the results of open sugar cane burning
and grass fires west of the coast last Iall.
The third type of air pollution. which accounts for
over hall of all the poisons In the air. results from the
action of the sun on the emissions from the automobile.
The resulting fumes of ozone. PAN iperoxyacetyli.
nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde. not to mention lead
and carbon monoxide. In strong enough concentrations
present a real health hazard to humans. animals and
crops alike.
These chemicals can cause Impairment of muscle
coordination,. dizuiness. nausea. headaches, bronchitis.
upper respiratory. eye and nose Irritation. Impairment
of mental processes and has recently been linked to
cancer. The elderly and those already III are hardest
hit.
Mrs. Ioy Chenault. a member of the pollution-
consclous League of Women Voters has been studying
the air pollution problem in Palm Beach County for
several years.
"The air In south Palm Beach County is better than
the average in the United States- now." she lays.
"But with the population growth and the number of
automobiles the added people bring and the industries
these new people will require. I hesitate to say the air
will remain this clean for long." Mrs. Chenault pre.
dicts.
Governmental pressures resulting from the 1967
and 1870 Clean Air Acts are beginning to show some
effects for Industrial pollution control.
But the automobile will not be compelled to have
any major pollutant control devices until 1975. and even
then. with the mushrooming number of cars on the
roads. experts have warned the pollution controls will
not make up for the additional cars on the highways.
Mass transportation seems to be one part of the
solution to this complex problem.
The cities In the area are beginning to respond to
the pressures they see coming. Boynton Beach is Inves.
tigating the possibility of combining forces with other
small municipalities along the Gold Coast tor a mini-
bus line.
Delray Beach ias accepted the application of a
private firm to operate a small bus line.
And a tri-counly transportation system working
between Palm Beach. Broward and Dade counties is in
the planning stage.
Private citizens have another. more immediate
weapon at hand- planting green plants and trees.
An Individual Inhales 35 pounds of oxygen a day. all
of which Is produced by plant life. on the land or in the
sea.
The tree s an especially good friend of man. It
absorbs harmful carbon monoxide from the air and
releases fresh oxygen into the atmosphere.
Trees trap polluted particles and hold them until
they are washed Into the ground. Trees In Los Angeles.
in fact. are such effective dust catchers that they need
to be periodically washed to relieve them of the dirt
they catch.
In another city. the dust count on the sheltered side
of the tree was 75 per cent lower than a similar count
an the windward side.

There are more folks with visiting relatives and

way.too.

TALENTED Lorralne luber at her wheel-clir to-

At long last the big annual Delray Afalir has come
and gone! Great weather for It as the resulting crowds
showed. and wasn't it a great chance, among the
mus. to see folks one hasn't seen In a while!
Helen Exner looked especially radiant maybe be-
cause she ust returned from a six-day stay at Waikiki
Beach. Hlonolulu with her gunnery sergeant husband.
Bob. The marine was on a short "rest and recreation"
trip to Hawalii rom Red Beach. outside Da Nang. This
was his second time around for Vietnam. having been
stationed there In 1965 before coming to West Palm to
be with the Inspector-Instructor team a unit to train
recruits for four years. The re-unit couple had a
wonderful lime. we hear, and took in all the things
-"hat tourists usually do:" the Don IHo show at the Reef
Towers. a luau, etc. lelen claimed they were the
"nicest people" she ever saw. ler aunt had come down
from Mllsouri toastc with the boys.
Another roalerviceman with ime off Is Seacres
alumnus Dennis Devenport. S.R.. home on a two week
leave after completing II weeks o basic naval trading
at Orlando. Before Dennis go to his next assignment.
Communication Traning School In Pensacola. he plans
to fill his vacation, alternating such activities as golf.
speargunnlng., sklrn-dlivlng, drItboang. and sleeping.
And while he's home. Beverley says. she Is Just going to
let her son "use the car and go."
We understand that the Children's Fashion Show.
sponsored by the Unity Parent-Teachers last Friday at
the Delray Beach Club with Jan Hayden commentating.
was much enjoyed! Proceeds went toward the purchase
of new "Talking Page" reading machine which were
sent from the Responsive Environments Corporation.
Apologies to Dan Krase of "Tradltional Sailing
Yachts. Inc." A "gremlin" mixed the type and last
week his name was misspelled.
The Ralph BIrd, whom we've often mentioned In
"Local Scene" since the almost fatal accident which
recently cost him a legi will soon by nying away from
Delray again. While daughter Alison. home on spring
break from U of F tended the young Birds. Barbara
Joined Ralph In Washington last weekend. Here they not
only visited the Bradburys Ihis sister. Ruthl but also
attended the movies, an "amazing" feat. taboo to the
Delrayllte for over a year. He also tri walking with a
cane for the fill time causing quite a commotion
among other guests at the Holiday Inn who were used
to seeing him with walker or crutches. Ralph will be
home for 4 or S days April 30. Then on May 5. Barbara
will accompany him to Honolulu for a few days. before
he departs for his USAID Job In Saigon once more.
After school's out. the rest of the Birds will fly to their
new home Taiwan. The little country. It seems Is a
small Island north of the Philippines. south of Japan
and Korea and Just off the China Coast. It Is Nationalist
Chinese, of course. and the town they will reside In is
Talpel. Here Ralph can see them for 4 days about once
a month.
While on the subject of folks who bravely disregard
their handicaps. I feel sure many of you have seen the
published drawings. writings and paintings of Miss
Lorraine Huber for she has created a number of Illus-
trations plus 4 or 5 covers for Fiesta magazine since Its
start, as well as writing feature stories and covering
the art section. She also has 2 weekly columns In the
"HiRIbser" and 2 art columr a month in the Deerlfield
Observer. This entire regime is handled expertly from
her motorized wheel chair.
Even before her legs were rendered useless by a
"very bad polio attack" at the age of three in New
York City. Lorraine did a good Job of drawing and
coloring says her mother (also In a wheel chair but
temporarily.i "My husband and I worried about her
education." Mrs. Huber continued., adding that although
cousins, who were teachers, taught the child to read
and write. there were no provisions then for a non-
walker to attend school. However, in the summer. since
the public school was close. Mrs. Iuber took Lorraine
to a summer program for the handicapped provided by
the city. Here her helpful teacher suggested "Home
Instruction" (also furnished by NYC.i As a result, the
girl was given a complete education in her home with 3
lessons a week. When she reached high school. 3
different teachers were sent. After winning a John
Wanamaker contest. Lorraine decided she wanted to
become an artist. Her late father, who was also very
talented In art but worked the night shift as a city
fireman, carried her up the last 2 stories no elevator
- so that she could attend "Art Career" school In one
of New Yorks oldest skyscrapers. Lorraine and her
mother can laugh now at the hectic scramble this
entailed. For although they'd been told they could park
in front of the building. about 3 times a week they
would receive parking tickets from uninformed police
and a mad rush to the station to "kill it" would follow.
Here in Florida, there are few parking difficulties
and Lorraine conducts her interviews by phone. Friends
and neighbors, since her mother has also been confined.
have been exceptionally kind. she says. doing such
"impossible" things as walking Jet Ithe small black
poodle who ,tlen curls up on the wheel chair table to
watch Lorralne draw.
One of the beautiful paintings which hangs in the
Iluber living room is of a grist mill the young lady
painted while In New Ilampshlre quite a few years ago.
Just alter she finished the work. a mountain of sawdust
behind the mill bunrt into name and the structure was
destroyed. Soon alter, an article appeared In Rledbook
about Lorralne. In which this watercolor was reproduc-
ed.
"I Just wish that the state of Florida would start
some program tor children that are home und." says
lorralne. whose fine talent might never have developed
without such help.
