Checklist for Action
REALIZE:
I the concern for pollution Is not a fad, but a
genuine movement that will affect the national scene.
2 that your wastes can, and In some places., are
being re-used as a valuable national resource.

ENCOURAGE:
I your city officials to find alternative means of
garbage disposal, rather than landfills. so that solid
wastes can be recycled.
2 your congressmen to Introduce and support
legislation for financial aid for those Interested In
recycling solid wastes.
3 your grocery stores not to over-package pro-
duce.
4 schools to teach ecology awareness and to
promote projects that benefit the community.
5 civic, youth and church groups to get involv
and set up collection centers for recycling of cans.
glass and paper.

BEGIN:
I thinking of where your products packaging
comes from and where they go after you throw them
away.
2- reusing plastic and paper bags.
3 a compost pile In your backyard.
4 separating aluminum cans from the rest of
your garbage and take them to the Boynton Beach
Chamber of Commerce, where they will be returned to
Miami for recycling. (Aluminum cans are easily crush-
ed.i
5 to cut down on the amountoff dlsposlble
products you use. Remember that every American
leaves an average of five pounds of garbage behind him
daily.
6 to buy returnable bottles whenever possl
Each bottle can be refilled an average of 19 tl
during7077 Ilfetime.

AVOID:
I buying plastic.packaged products, products In
plastic containers If you can find suitable materials
packaged In paper or glass. According to the magazine,
"Changing Times." plastlci are an Increasingly trou-
blesome solid-waste component because they resist
compression and are virtually Indestractable by ordi-
nary disposal means. Most plastics tend to melt rather
than burn and emit toxic fumes and clog Incinerators.
Containers of the milk-white rigid plastic of polyvinyl
chloride (PVC), when burned, emit corrosive gases
that foul the ar.
2 excessively packaged products, such as Individ-
ually-wrapped cheese slices or outside paper containers
for toothpaste or shampoo.
REMEMBER your greatest power as an Individual lies
In your choice of purchases.

Waste Disposal

Is $$$ Problem

ByJULGRADDY
Every 0our seconds another American Is born Into a
life as citizen and consumer. In his average lifetime of
70 years he will add to the G.N.I. by consuming 50 to
of food. 28 tons of Iron and steel. 1200 barrels of
petroleum products, one and a half tons of fiber and
4.500 cubic feet of wood and paper.
This. according to John G. Mitchell in the book
"Ecotactics." will mostly all wind upas waste.
And with only one-sixth of the world's population.
the United Stales consumes one-third of the earth's
minerals. In fact. more materials have been mined.
(abricat and discarded by the United States during
the past ten years than by all the people In the history
ol the earth. says B. D. Wakefield In the magazine
"Iron Age."
In Delray Beach. the early cost of garbage collec-
tion runs almost a half million dollars. says City
Manager J. Eldon Marriott.
And, each piece of litter picked up from county
highways costs the taxpayer 32 cents,
A fair share of the estimated 4 billion aluminum
cans produced In the United States last year landed In
this area. but even with the half-cent bounty on them
from companies in Miami and Coral Gables. only
Bovnton Beach has organized a program to return a
small minority of these cans for reuse. The rest are
waste.
And although the Key Club's project of collecting
papers In several neighborhoods for recycling Is help-
ful. as one official of Southern Sanitation Co. said. "If
all the towns collected papers for recycling, there
wouldn't be any market for them."
Although paper and cellulose make up from 50-75
per cent of garbage. Industry has found It cheaper to
use raw pulp rather than reprocessing old paper, with
the result that only 20 per cent of all paper is recycled.
At present a too of newsprint will bring from 6-18
a ton on what Is considered to be a fluctuating market.
Magazines are not usually taken by paper dealers.
Yet even with pressing problems, cities are finding
It difficult to change from a landfill method of garbage
disposal Into one that would recycle wastes.
Economics Is the main reason for this. The city of
Delray Beach. for Instance, pays (445.000 yearly to
collect its garbage. After being taken to a compacting
station the garbage Is ultimately taken to the county
dump.
Delray City Manager J. Eldon Marriott believes
this Is still the most economical of any method he's
seen In his 20 years of experience, and that the city is
satisfied with the landfill method of disposal.
II the present rate of growth for Delray Beach
continues, garbage collection will cost the city one
million a year.
A. F. Keller. Administrative Assistant to the Coun-
ty Engineer. Is known for his outspoken views on the
environment and beaches a course on environmental
science at Palm Beach Junior College.
.According to Keller. the county Is presently InvesU-
gatingthe possibility of buying a hIgh-Intemlty Inclnera-
tor.
The Incinerator Is estimated to cost between $6-10
million and will serve the entire county with one large
or two dual modular units.
The power generated by the 3000 degree heat
would be hooked up to Florida Power & Uight as an
additiUonal source of power, and the residue ash pellets
could be used In asphalt roads.
The county Is also Investigating other means of
disposal., nd as Keller says, "I would like to see 100
per cent recycling, but so far what I've seen Indicates
that Incineration Is still the most economical."
He cited the recycling plant In Galnesvllle which
has proved somewhat unsuccessful due to fragile equip-
ment and unpleasant working conditions which lead to a
large labor turnover.
Kdeller says that every piece of scrapped automo-
biles except the tires and the plastic Is taken off the car
for reuse. Alter the county cuts up the pieces. they are
taken to Opa Locka where the pieces are compacted
Into small squares and then shipped to Italy or Japan
for reuse.
In the paper market. Keller foresees the possibility
of taxing the manufacturer If he does not use a certain
percentage of recycled paper.
Other places have experimented with Incineration
with amazing results. A power station in Munich.
Germany burns over 40 tonm of refuse an hour to
produce electricity. That's the American equivalent of
saving 52.880 worth of oil each 24 hours by using heat
from trash In a controlled system.
Some combination of recycling and Incineration
seems almost Inevitable In this world of mounting
garbage and diminishing natural resources.
Athelstan Spilhaus, Palm Beach County resident.
noted oceanographer and presdent-elect of the Amerd-
can Association for thr Advancement of Science said at
a symposium last year that "for the double purpose of
conservation of resources and prevention of pollution.
we must plan on recycling virtually everything we
make and use. with the possible exception of the Mona
Lisa on one end and cigarette smoke on the other."
Hie went on to say that Industry must be Induced by
subsidies or penalized by taxes Into manufacturing
goods that lend themselves best to recycling and that
the cost of recycling must be Included In the manufac-
turer's cost.
NEXT WEEK: THE AIR IS EVEYWIIERE.

LOUISE LAMME looks over her cook book, the result of seven years of
rnesearb.

Indians themselves, while Louse and her husband.
Vernon. lived among a tribe west of Danla.
Mr. Lamme. a former slate archeologilt.taught the
Indians how to make pottery, reviving an art lst to the
Semnoles over 150 years ago. Migrating to Florida, the
Semnoles found no clay and were unable to make
pottery.
Mr. and Mrs. Iamme became friends with Joe and
Pocohontas Jumper, who later named a daughter after
Lonube and requested that the Lamme's be Godparents.
"I don't profess to be a great cook" explal
Lousle. "but I do love to cook."
Louise has tried most of the recipes, but many
family dishes didn't need t tling; "I know they're
good" Louise said with a grin.
Among Loulse's favorites are Syrup Pie. one of her
mothers recipes and collard greens.
The owner of the Totem gift shop on U.S. 1, Louise
manages to find time to answer the many letters and
fflo orders aside from running her souvenir shop.
In her wide variety of fan mail, is Included a
humorous mispelled letter from a woman In Arkansas
to letters of praise from Paul Roges, state represen-
tative and Jerry Thomas, president of the Florida
Senate.
