NEW YEAR'S EVE REGATTA:

15th Anniversary On The Horizon

A popular sailing tradition in
Saint Barth is the New Year's
Eve Regatta, which will cele-
brate its 15th anniversary on
December 31, 2009. An antici-
pated fleet of 30 to 35 sailboats
will participate in this annual
around-the-island race, which is
open to all boats of all shapes
and sizes: in fact the speed
record of 1 hour 31 minutes and
6 seconds set in 2006 is held by
French sailor Claude Tellier and
his 60' Orma trimaran, the
Region Guadeloupe. In the
mono-hull class, the boat to beat
is the 2004 winner, the 147'
Baltic yacht, Visione, which
completed the course in 1 hour,
32 minutes, 7 seconds.

When the boats head out to the
starting line on the morning of
December 31, 2009, the one to
keep an eye on is the new 137' J-
Class replica, Hanuman, a replica
of Endeavour II built in 1937.
Hanuman (named after the Hindu
monkey god) was designed by naval
architects, Dykstra & Partners, built
at the Royal Huisman shipyard, and
launched in March 2009.

Also expected in the fleet this year:
Hyperion, a 156' Royal Huisman
yacht; Selene, a Swan 80; and maybe
both of the 76' W-Class boats, Wild
Horses or White Wings. Local entries

SNew Year's Eve Regatta with the winning
82' Swan, Capo Giro, leading the pack

should include Lil'E, Speedy Nemo,
Corban (a Swan 42), and Baladin.

The Saint Barth Yacht Club, the Port
of Gustavia, and the Collectivity of
Saint Barth primarily organize the
event, with Mark Del Guidice (who
lived on the island for 14 years and
has sailed in every edition of to date)
lending a hand to Markku Harmala,
Annalisa Gee, and Jean-Paul Berry

from the SBYC. This is not
a corporate event with an
entry fee. The only advertising
is word of mouth, which keeps
it friendly and informal,"
notes Del Guidice. "The spirit
of the race is that it's open to
everyone from 24' to 147'
boats who gather together for
an event that is part of the
Saint Barth sailing season,
from the skippers' meeting to
the awards ceremony, with a
great regatta to ring in the
New Year."

One of the highlights of the holiday
season in Saint Barth: Jean-Roch,
known as "the king of the night," will
host his famous VIP ROOM from
December 25 through January 10.
These 16 exceptional nights of party-
ing will take place only at the Yacht
Club complex in Gustavia.

Jean-Roch is an international DJ. Part
of his renown comes from his VIP
ROOM in St. Tropez, Paris, Cannes,
and London, but this year he has
decided to spend the holiday season
in Saint Barth. But not on vacation!

He is the special guest of Carole,
owner of the Yacht Club complex.
This new space, which includes the
YACHT CLUB (restaurant, sushi bar,
boutique) and the VIP ROOM with
two dance floors, was recently
redesigned and spruced up for the
holidays. Every evening, 500 lucky
guests will be able to enjoy the fabu-
lous ambiance created by Carole and
Jean-Roch: the best of the DJ's, the
biggest stars, and the best cham-
pagne.

Nicknamed "the
Asking of the night,"
Jean-Roch must also
be a businessman.
The creator and
founder of numerous
nightclubs, he is also
a composer. And DJ.
In less than a year,
he made his mark
with a mix of house,
soul, rock, and hip-
hop: An explosive
musical cocktail. His

Jean Koch (L Cedric Viollet
special relationships with artists and
show business personalities allowed
him to launch the VIP ROOM concept
in the best nightclubs. He also pays
attention to even the smallest detail,
from merchandise to design, and mar-
keting of his company.

In 2005, he released his first single:
"Can You Feel It," which was a suc-
cess, followed three years later by "God
Bless Rock and Roll." Last June, he
published his anthology of 20 years of
clubbing as a double album, "VIP
ROOM 20TH ANNIVERSARY."
Quite an accomplishment!

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution,
the 14th annual, St Barth Film Festival of Caribbean Cinema
marked this historic event. Over the years, the festival has
screened the best of Cuban cinema, while this time the focus
was on Cuba as seen by international directors.

A WHALE OF A TALE
Patrick Laplace took this incredible image on his cell phone
while fishing with his friend Gilles. They met a "killer
whale" along the way who decided to be playful... a surpris-
ing tale as these whales are rarely seen in Caribbean waters
and are usually considered to be aggressive.

MAJOR DROUGHT IN SAINT BARTH
An exceptional period of drought hit the island for the first
three months of '09, making it the driest period since the late
50s, with less than 4" of rain. Then April proved to be the
one of the driest in the island's history with just 0.3" of pre-
cipitation.

URBAN PLANNING MAP REVEALED
The island's territorial council revealed its proposed map
for "zoning" on an island where officially there is no zon-
ing! The population had the right to comment from July 20
through September 15, at which time there were more than
400 observations recorded. The biggest issue is the desire to
build in zones that remain protected or "green" on the map.

LOCAL PRESSURE To MAINTAIN NATURAL
ZONES
Three local environmental protection associations-Saint
Barth Environment, Essential Saint Barth, and the Associa-
tion For The Protection of Birds-started a petition to pro-
tect three large "green" zones on the island, where building
permits have been requested. By October 5, the petition gar-
nered 1,185 signatures, enough to ask the Territorial Council
to hold a popular referendum. On December 17, the prefec-
ture endorsed the executive council's decision to reject the
petition on the grounds that those zones are already protected
on the planning map.

PHASE I OF EPHAD BEGUN

Construction began for an EPHAD, or medical facility for
senior citizens who need assistance, next to the De Bruyn
Hospital in Gustavia. The facility is expected to open within
the next three years.

REAL ESTATE ASSOCIATION CREATED
The goal of the new real estate agencies association in Saint
Barth, which currently has 10 members, is to help promote
the island, offer better services for clients, provide industry
training, improve communications, and ensure good profes-
sional practices on the island. Bertrand Labouerie is the first
president.

Eco-HOTEL PROPOSED IN SALINE
Hotel tycoon Andre Balazs has his sights set on a six-star
"ecology-based" luxury hotel in Saline, and came to the
island to present his plans to local politicians and representa-
tives of the three environmental protection associations. This
project is highly controversial as some of the land is located
in a "green" zone behind the dunes on Saline beach and
would have to be reclassified for construction.

* Puzzle jat www.sudokustar.fr
There's no math involved. The grid has numbers, but
nothing has to add up to anything else. You solve the
puzzle with reasoning and logic. It's fun. It's chal-
lenging. It's addictive!"Fill in the grid so that every
row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the
digits 1 through 9."That's all there is to it.
