The Adventures of Monbarsgold,

A New Children's Book

A bold, ambitious project created by Ines
Bouchaut Choisy, "The Adventures of Mond-
barsgold" is a concept inspired by the world of
Disney, with its combination of children's
books, animated films, books on tape, and a
myriad of related products. Her ambition is to
recreate the history of Saint Barthelemy,
"because a people without a history is a peo-
ple without a soul, and it is necessary to ques-
tion the past in order to understand the present
and the future, but also to make the residents
of the island aware of the morals and values
inherited from the past that continue to create
the worldwide reputation of the island,"
explains the creator of the project.
Financed privately, the project became a rea-
lity last week when the first in a twelve-
volume set of books went on sale. In addition,
a Carnival-style parade featuring the charac-
ters from the book will take place at 3:30pm
on Saturday, April 18 in the streets of Gustavia
(see inset).
"Corossol: Land of love and sharing"* is the
DON'T Miss THE CHARACTER PARADE
To make the characters in her book seem
more real in the imagination of her
young readers, and to create a "buzz,"
Ines Bouchaut Choisy has organized a
costume parade with the characters
from "The Adventures of Monbarsgold."
With costumes created especially for the
occasion by Laura Beal and Audrey
Couture, this parade takes place on
Saturday, April 18 at 3:30pm in Gusta-
via, along the Rue de la Republique. It
will conclude on the Quai du G6enral de
Gaulle, with various activities for chil-
dren-fishing, make-up, clowns, and
gifts-and the author on hand to sign
copies of her book.

title of the first episode in this historic saga,
which takes place in the Saint Barth of the
18th century during the time when Daniel
Monbars (called Monbarsgold in the book), a
cruel pirate known as "The Exterminator,"
came to the island to bury his treasure. At the
same time, the island is menaced with the
disappearance of all its water if the heart of
Saint Barth, which holds the secret of the
island, is not found.
This saga for children invites them to join in
this quest, with each episode bringing to life a
different neighborhood on the island, plus a
special supplement about Saint Barth in the
Swedish era.
Pascal Louis is credited with the creation of
the characters, and Chet Spiewak of CWS
Studios, a specialist in 3D animations, illustra-
ted the books.
*The first episode is available in French (with
Saint Barth patois) as well as English. A Swe-
dish version will be availablefor the second
annual Swedish week next November

New System

For Doctors

On Call
Of as April 2, there is a new
telephone number to reach
the doctor-on-call: you must
dial 0590 90 13 13, or sim-
ply dial 15, in order to get
medical assistance outside
of regular office hours. This
corresponds to a change in
the doctor-on-call system-
currently covered by four
doctors on the island. As of
now, the system will be
managed through a rotating
group of doctors in Guade-
loupe, and the calls go to the
SAMU (medical emergency
service) call center (15) after
midnight. This solution has
two advantages: first, these
doctors are dedicated exclu-
sively to this task, and are
qualified to answer medical
questions that worried
patients might ask, then
"dispatch" them to the cor-
rect medical facility: a hos-
pital for emergencies, or the
doctor-on-call when appro-
priate. Second advantage:
This service does not just
provide medical advice-it
also controls medical assis-
tance, from putting patients
in touch with the doctor-on-
call or sending an ambu-
lance or emergency medical
service (Smur). Its also
insures that the entire
process is handled smoothly.

Will Newsnaners Exist In 20 Years?

Is

Ar,

Senator Michel Magras with a CM1 class from the Ecole Sainte-Marie in Colombier and CM2 from Gustavia.

The 20th edition of "Press
Week In The Schools" took
place from March 23-28.
The goal of this week: to
teach students about the
role of media. As part of
the project, the newspaper
for children, Mon Quotidi-
en, and the French Senate
organized a national com-
petition for the best class

newspaper; the winners
will go to the Senate to
accept their prize. The idea
behind the competition is
simple: each competing
class is invited to create its
own newspaper about cur-
rent events using a blank
template from Mon Quoti-
dien, with a different theme
each year. The theme for

2009: "Will you still read
the news printed on paper
in 20 years?"
Encouraged by Senator
Michel Magras, four class-
es on the island participat-
ed in this competition for
the first time. For all of the
students, the exercise con-
sisted primarily of formu-
lating an argument "for or

against the existence of
printed newspapers in 20
years," conducting an inter-
view with one of their fel-
low students who wanted
to be the editor-in-chief,
and interviewing local sen-
ator Michel Magras, who
supported the project
whole-heartedly.

Larry O'Donnell has
been named the new r'
president of SBIPO, ,V -
Saint Barth International
Property Owners Associ- "
ation, which was found-
ed two years ago under
the impetus of David
Graham and other home
owners on the island.
O'Donnell, who has a February, and March, and

the third president of the April, with guest speakers
association's board of such as Bruno Magras, and
directors, following Jeet Philippe Hochart, who
Singh and Deborah Bros- recently addressed the
nan in the position. "Our group on advances in alter-
goals are to try and unite native energy. The other
the international home officers of the SBIPO
owners, especially in terms board include: Marty Lon-
of communication, as well don, vice-president,
as do something beneficial Suzanne Jackson, secre-
for the island," says tary, and Libby Troyer,
