he 2009 St Barth Bucket may
go down in the annals of
Bucket history as one of the
best regattas ever! It started with a
record size fleet: 35 incredible sail-
boats on the starting line, 33 of which
were over 100' in length (the excep-
tions were Windcrest at 98' by Hodg-
don Yachts and Symmetry
at 96' by Yachting Develop-
ment-as well as Wild
Horses, a 76' W-Class boat
that spends every winter in
Saint Barth). Not an easy
feat, to assemble so much
yacht power in one place at
the same time, especially in
a year when an economic
crisis has reigned in the
sails on a lot of other activi-
ties, nautical and otherwise.
"As Buckets go, this one
was epic," says Hank Halst-
ed, organizer of this annual T
event, the 14th edition of
which took place March 27-
29. The weather, waves, and winds all
cooperated, providing perfect condi-
tions for some great sailing. Orga-
nized in conjunction with The Port of
Gustavia and the St. Barth Yacht
Club, the Bucket is also now affiliat-
ed with the French Sailing Associa-
tion (FFV) and an official event on
the French sailing calendar. Major
sponsors include Holland Jachl:..:.ul ,
Perini Navi, Royal Husiman, Vitters
Shipyards, and Alloy Yachts-all of
which find the Bucket to be a great
place to show off their yachts, do
business, and enjoy a truly unique
event, where the creme of the yacht-
ing world gathers for the weekend.

What A Buckel

The Bucket fleet is divided into two
classes: Les Grand Dames de la Mer,
or cruising boats, with Meteor, a 170'
Royal Huisman gaff-rigged schooner,
Tom Perkins' high-tech, 289' Maltese
Falcon (winner of the Perini Navi tro-
phy presented at the Bucket), and
Windcrest coming in first, second and

he crew ofMeteor which won the 2009 Buc
and took first place in the Grand Dames cla

third respectively; and Les Gazelles, or
racing boat class, which was won by
the 128' Ganesha by Fitzroy Yachts,
with P2, Perini Navi's new 125' racing
yacht in second place, and Destination
Fox Harb'r, a 134' Alloy Yachts entry
in third place. Other notable entries
included the 125' Ranger, a replica of
the J-Class America's Cup boat, and
last year's winner, the 152' Holland
Jachlbil.-u' 1.iaci Windrose.
With captain Dean Maggio at the
helm, Meteor sailed beautifully, win-
ning the first and third days' races,
placing a disappointing 13th on the
second day, yet putting in the best
overall performance to take top hon-

ors. In the overall standings, Adela, a
180' Pendennis Restoration took third
place, with Windcrest second. Two
newcomers, Baracuda, a 186' Perini
Navi, and Varsovie, a 100' Swan, tied
for the Escargot Cup, awarded to the
"snails" in the race.
Camper Nicholson Yachts had gener-
ously donated 12 small
Vanguard sailboats to the St
Barth sailing school after
Last year's Bucket, and this
year the kids from the
school raced in a junior-
SBucket with British sailor
and double Olympic Gold
Medalist Shirley Robertson
on hand to give out the
awards. In continued sup-
port of the children on the
island, this year, the Bucket
organizers donated 17,500
Euros, or 10% of the entry
-ket fees from the race to the
Iss. junior high for new com-
puters. "Our computers are
antiquated, this will make us much
more modern," explained school
director Christian Ledee.
At the awards ceremony on the dock
on Sunday, March 29, president Bruno
Magras noted: "This is an important
event for the island and I offer a big
thanks to the owners of these fantastic
boats. We hope to host the Bucket for
many years to come." If this year's
Bucket was any indication, the 15th
annual regatta in March 2010 ought to
be quite a party!

J- 1
A West Indies resident for 25 years,
Yves-Marie de Malleray's second
exhibit in Saint Barthelemy takes
place Friday, April 3 through Thurs-
day, April 9, at Gallery Porta 34 in
Gustavia, with paintings of the fish
and birds of the island.
Trained as an agricultural engineer,
Yves-Marie de Malleray originally
moved to Martinique to create
shrimp nurseries, but never gave up
on the passion he had for art ever
since he was a child in France: espe-
cially painting nature and wild ani-

his work to shine

species, and to call
for the respect of natural beauty.
Accomplished technically, Yves-
Marie de Malleray takes the time to
actually experience the emotions he
transmits onto the canvas via his
brushes. He has mastered the
process of bas-relief, which accord-
ing to the light on the paintings,
allows a second layer to be seen: the
environment of the principal subject.
Yves-Marie de Malleray, who is also
a designer for Hermes, and does
interior design for cruise ships and
hotels, has returned to the West

What a sad sight to see this
sea turtle literally cut in
half by the propeller of a
boat, and found in the entry
channel to the port by a
diver last Friday. Disgusted
by this kind of behavior,
the Marine Park is going to
take serious action; and
since a picture is worth a
thousand words, they
decided to exhibit the ani-
mal in front of the Marine
Park offices along the dock
in Gustavia. "The idea is to
make people aware of the
dangers in going too fast in
the channel, where there

This is just

are plants for
them to eat. If
all the boats
respected the

maximum speed of three
knots, we wouldn't have
this kind of spectacle," says
the staff, which continually
reminds people of the
speed limit. But the truth of
the matter is that at busy
times in the port, such as
the end of the year or dur-
ing nautical events such as
the St Barth Bucket, the
speed limit is virtually
ignored by the majority of
the pilots who navigate in
the port. What's worse is
that the signage indicating
the speed limit no longer
exists.

Boat C(/iu In Corossol:

A vital element for the neighborhood

Jean-Marie Danet is a hap-
py man: the renovation of
the pontoon in Corossol is
complete and the recon-
struction of the boat chute,
which allows for fishing
boats to be put into the
water (or taken out) is
almost finished as well. As
a territorial council member
who serves on various com-
missions (environment,
education, culture, profes-
sional training, and securi-
ty), and is also the
spokesperson for his neigh-
borhood, this project is
important: "the chute is a
vital element for Corossol.
It not only allows for small
boats to be stored easily out
of the water in case of bad
ScilAti but also protects
the beach. Without it, rain-
water that gathers along the

road washes away the sand
every time there are heavy
rains. Needless to say, just
three months before the
start of the 2009 hurricane
season, the entire neighbor-
hood is relieved to see this
work nearly completed."
Originally built back when
Remy de Haenen was may-
or, the chute was made
longer in February 1999.
While damaged by various
storms and hurricanes since
then, it had not yet been
repaired when a part of the
chute gave way completely
under the force of the strong
swells generated by hurri-
cane Omar last October.
These swells also damaged
the pontoon in Corossol.
Jean-Marie Danet has other
plans for the neighborhood
he hopes can become reality

as well. One of these is to
repave the road that runs
through the village, espe-
cially near the top of the hill
at the intersection with the
road to Colombier, "a veri-
table ice skating rink when
it rains," he says. The road
also needs work at the bot-
tom where numerous
repairs have created a jiq-
saw puzzle of the paving.
Danet would also like to see
the electric wires put under-
ground, but admits there is a

problem: some of the hous-
es have their septic systems
under the road....
He would also like to find a
solution for the parking
problem along the water-
front in Corossol, and hopes
that the beaches on the
south side of the island will
be given new sand, consid-
ering that "precious grains"
were washed away by
Omar, and while the project
was budgeted, it has not yet
begun.

CONGRATULATIONS !

Emily & David of
New York, USA,
celebrated their
personal wedding
ceremony at La Villa
Fregate in St Barth
on March 19. The
intimate sunset cere-
mony was followed
by cocktails and din-
ner at Hotel Le
Sereno where the
couple and their
guests enjoyed "La
Piece Montee des
Maries" traditional
French wedding
cake. The event was
organized by
Melanie Smith.

* Puzzle Q at www.sudokustar.fr
There's no math involved. The grid has numbers, but
nothing has to add up to anything else. You solve the
puzzle with reasoning and logic. It's fun. It's challenging.
It's addictive!"Fill in the grid so that every row, every
column, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 through
9."That's all there is to it. (Solution page 23)
