La Capricieuse Celebrates

A Double Anniversary

Anchored at the
main dock in Gus-
tavia from last
Monday through Thursday
afternoon, La Capricieuse,
patrol boat P400 from the
French Navy, is celebrat-
ing a double anniversary
in 2008: its 25th anniver-
sary at sea-it was
launched on September
12, 1983-and its
affiliation with Saint
Barth, since the island
"adopted" the ship on
August 24, 1988.
To celebrate this double
anniversary, a cocktail par-
ty was held aboard on
Monday evening, followed
by a reception at the Hotel
de la Collectivite, in honor
of the crew. Public visits
were also organized, as
they are each time La
Capricieuse stops at the
island. After three junior
high classes went aboard
on Tuesday afternoon, the
population was invited to
visit on Wednesday. The
ship is normally based in
French Guyana. Its princi-
pal mission: Maritime sur-
veillance maritime of
French territorial waters

during the launching of
Ariane missiles. Its second
major mission is to serve
the police that control fish-
ing, an important activity
that consists of stopping
the numerous boats that do
not have the right to fish in
the restricted economic
zone of French Guyana.
La Capricieuse also helps
the French government in
the fight against drug
smugglers and in other
official missions at sea.
Since July 2007, the com-
mander of La Capricieuse
has lieutenant Frangois
Gelebart.

The lieutenant Francois G6lebart,
commander ofLa Capricieuse

A memorial service was
held on Thursday, May 23
for 45-year old yacht cap-
tain Brian Quinn from
South Carolina who disap-
peared in the waters of Saint
Barth on May 5, 2008.
Although the body has not
been found, his family feels
there is little hope that he is
still alive.
The incident took place on a
dark, moonless night, when
Quinn jumped off the 125'
yacht Triple Attraction, of
which he was captain. It
seems he was trying to
retrieve the yacht's Zodiac,
which had become loose
and was drifting away. A
three-day intensive search
by boat and by air did not
locate the body. Jeff Quinn,
the victim's brother, won-
ders why the yacht tender
was unsecured. "No one
could give me an answer as

to how it came untied," he
said.
The Charleston, SC Post
and Courier reported that
his family held the service
at Holy Cross Episcopal
Church on Daniel Island.
After graduating from Wan-
do High School, Brian
Quinn served for six years
in the U.S. Coast Guard. He
had been working as a yacht
captain for more than a
decade. A few weeks before
his disappearance, Quinn
had returned home for a
family reunion in Bluffton,
SC. The family includes his
father, Gerald Quinn, a local
neurologist, and his mother,
Patricia Quinn, a registered
nurse. Jeff Quinn said there
is some solace in knowing
that his brother died doing
what he loved: "It basically
was his life."

The first Swedish
Week in Saint
Barthelemy will
take place November 16-
23, 2008. Organized by
the non-profit associa-
tions, ASBAS and Skall-
skapet (The Friends of
Saint Barth Association of
Stockholm) with the sup-
port of the island govern-
ment, the goal of this week
is to celebrate the ongoing
Saint Barth-Swedish
friendship as well as the
island's Swedish past, but
also to introduce the cur-
rent population of Saint
Barth to the reality of
Sweden today. There will
be a variety of activities
relating to Sweden, includ-
ing a new date marking
the commemoration of the
twinning of Saint Barth
and Pieta in Sweden. This
event has until now taken
place on August 15, but
will henceforth be cele-
brated as the opening day
of Swedish Week, the Sun-
day before the running of
the Gustavialoppet, which
will close the week's
activities: "This works
better for everyone,"
explains Niels Dufau,
president of ASBAS, "as
November is a better time
for people to come from
Sweden."

According to Yves
Greaux, vice-president of
Saint Barth's territorial
council and responsible
for cultural affairs, "This
also avoids the celebration
of Pitea Day on the same
day as Assumption. There
are many reasons for the
island to support this event
in a big way. 2008 marks a
triple date: the first
Swedish Week in Saint
Barth; the 30 years of twin
cities Pitea and Saint
Barth, and the 130th
anniversary of the retro-
cession of the island to
France. It is important to
give this first edition a real
visibility, to give it a solid
base to become an annual
event." With this in mind,
the vice-president has
asked for projects to be
submitted, especially by
the island's associations.
These projects, all related
to Sweden, will enrich the
program envisioned by
ASBAS and its Swedish
partners: the town of Pitea,
the Pitea-Saint Barth
Friendship Association,
Sillskapet in Stockholm,
and Per Tingrband, hon-
orary citizen of Saint
Barthelemy. All those who
wish to participate should
contact the Tourist Office
before August 15, 2008.

Students Collect Donations For The Red Cross

Last weekend, a small
group of junior high stu-
dents took part in a national
fund-raising drive for the
Red Cross. This effort was
initiated by the directors of
the local antenna of the Red
Cross and the staff of the

Mireille Choisy junior high.
The group of volunteers-
some in their first effort of
this sort-met last Saturday
for a short briefing: "We
explained the reason for this
event and our specific goals
to the students," explained

Henri Louis, president of
the delegation. "The enthu-
siasm these young people
had for a good cause is evi-
dent. We were pleased by
their kindness, their spon-
taneity, and their sense of
responsibility. And even if

we haven't yet met the goal
of this effort, it was a big
success just from the point
of view of the involvement
by the students."

WHERE DOES
THE MONEY Go?
As of this year, the local
arm of the Guadeloupe
Delegation of the Red
Cross became a territo-
rial delegation. This
change in status means a
financial autonomy that
it did not have before. As
a result, the monies rai-
sed during this funding
drive will be used for
needs on the island. To
make sure this is clear to
everyone, the delegation
has promised to create a
list of its actions and the
monies spent by the end
of the year.

Organized by Raphaelle, the manag-
er of the ranch in Flamands with
help from parents of the riders, a
fourth day of obstacle jumping was
held on Sunday, May 18 at the
island's equestrian center. The pro-
gram included demonstrations by the

youngest riders as well as two jump-
ing competitions. The course com-
prised a variety of obstacles with the
posts raised as high as 36 inches
from the ground. Many of the cava-
liers made successful jumps under

the watchful eye of their coach,
Raphaelle, who is proud of their
progress. The season at the ranch
will close on Saturday, June 14 with
a reception in the late afternoon.
