Welcome to

the St Barth Film

Festival

The 13th annual St. Barth Film Festival has a menu of
excellent films and documentaries, starting with the
avant-premiere of the documentary, Saint-Barthdlemy,
La Belle et L'avion, a look at the island through its his-
tory of aviation.

We are also pleased to announce a new award, Le Prix
de la Guadeloupe, which will offer a prize to the win-
ning short film from Guadeloupe. This is a ground-
breaking event for us, funded by the Conseil R6gional
de la Guadeloupe, with support from LVT Laser Subti-
tling-New York, and represents an exciting new part-
nership for the festival.

In a second break from tradition, we are also planning
to bring cinema to the beach. On April 26, in addition
to our screening of Persepolis at A.J.O.E, Jean-Marc
C6saire of Cind Would, will be showing Saint-Barthdle-
my, La Belle et L'avion as well as the documentary,
Caribbean Divas, by Steve and St6phanie James on the
beach at Flamands. An event not to be missed-it's our
way of bringing cinema to those who don't traditional-
ly see films on a big screen!

At the same time, we are pleased to be able to show
some excellent 35mm films shot in the Dominican
Republic, Brazil, Argentina, Jamaica, and even a film
about Iran. The films range in style from neo-realism to
animation, and in time from 1960s to the present, but in
different and compelling ways each one explores the
challenge of defining one's personal integrity and
responsibility in the face of a difficult world. Each one
has iilhin; to say worth hearing. We hope you'll
come and listen.

NINTH EDITION OF TRANSAT AG2R

26 Sailboats Leave Concarneau For Saint Barth

Every other year, it's
time for the Transat
Ag2r! And Saint
Barth is already looking
forward to the arrival of the
identical Figaro Beneteau
boats in the fleet of the 9th
edition of this transatlantic
race. The boats set sail last
Sunday at 10am from Con-
carneau, a French fishing
port in Finisterre known for
its medieval walled town.
Aboard 26 boats, the 52
sailors in the race-three of
which are women-are pri-
marily French, with a Bel-
gian, a Chezk, and an Eng-
lishman in their midst, as
well as two sailors from
Saint Barth: Miguel Danet,
the youngest competitor in
the Transat, who will be 23
next Wednesday and is sail-
ing with Eric Peron from
Concarneau aboard the
Figaro "Concarneau-Saint-
Barth," and the oldest in
the race, 56 year-old Luc
Poupon, the skipper of
"Solarinox." Chasing the
trade winds across the
Atlantic, the sailors should
reach the shores of Saint
Barth between May 8 and
May 10. If the gods of the
winds are smiling!
When we went to press on

Wednesday, the boat "Con-
carneau-Saint Barth" was
in 16th place, just 22 miles
behind the leader, team
Finance, whose Nicolas
Troussel, won the race in
2004. "Solarinox" was in
14th place, with 3,200
miles to go, this doesn't
mean much. And the wind,
which had been strong in
the Bay of Biscay, was
calmer after the boats
passed Cap Finisterre. The
boats, which had been
close together for the first

few days, are now father
apart as they sail by the
coast of Portugal, while
their speed decreased along
with the wind, from 30-35
knots to 5 to 7 knots!!
As the sailing strategy is
also based on the weather,
one thing is sure: a anticy-
clone system is causing
low winds and pockets
with no wind, barring the
route toward Porto Santo
(Madeira). With that situa-
tion hovering on the hori-
zon, the navigators have to
use their best sailing tech-
niques to get clear of this
zone and take the fastest

route to Madeira where
they sail around a buoy
before heading out across
the ocean.

Racing On Identical
Boats
The Transat Ag2r Concar-
neau-Saint Barth is transat-
lantic race "fought with
equal weapons." What this
means is that each team of
two sailors is aboard the
same type of boat: a Figaro
B6n6teau II, the second
generation-launched in
2003-of these small 33'
sailboats.

Every other year Saint Barth hosts the arrival of the
Transat Ag2r, with the boats due to hit Saint Barth
around May 10. In order to help facilitate this arri-
val, the island's Hotel Association has agreed to fur-
nish 250 room nights for the sailors and organizers,
as well as the journalists who cover the event. This
year, since three local hotels that offered rooms have
closed, the association is having difficulty meeting its
quota. As a result, we are looking for a dozen rooms
for five nights each. If you are interested in donating
a room and helping with this event, please call Carol
Ann at 0690 56 10 03.

FIRST EDITION OF BOOK FESTIVAL:

he vote is unani-
mous: those who
took part in the first
edition of the Saint Barth
Book Festival, which ran
from Thursday, April 17
through Sunday, April 20
under the umbrella of the
Saint B'Art, found the event
is of importance to the com-
munity and are pleased that
the organizers have already
set the date for the second
edition in 2009. The festival
began on Thursday evening
with a presentation by the
two guests of honor: poets
Jean-Pierre Sim6on and
Luis Mizon, who came
from France thanks to
Monique Pignet, sponsor of
Prix Apollinaire and
founder of the event, Po&te
en l'ile, which took place
for the first time last year

acter, which allows "the lib-
erty to express the word in a
different way." He com-
pared poetry to Esperanto, a
universal language under-
stood by everyone. The next
day he met with a group of
teachers at Saint Joseph
school in Lorient, and
reminded them of the
importance of teaching
poetry o children
Luis Mizon, a poet original-
ly from Chile, who has
lived in Paris since the
1970s, led a writing work-
shop at the M6t6o France
building in Gustavia. The
goal was to bring to life the
objects selected by the par-
ticipants at the local muse-
um-or more precisely, to
tell the story of each object
in the form of a poem.

After le cocktail on Friday
evening at the Comptoir du
Cigare in Gustavia, where
the public was invited to
hear a first series of read-
ings, the next event for the
poets and their fans was
under the tamarin tree at the
restaurant by the same
name, where the second
series of readings was sim-
ply magical. Luis Mizon
recited some Cuban poems
as well as come of his own
work in Spanish, while
Diana Bourel read some
verses by Aim6 C6saire, the
celebrated poet from Mar-
tinique who passed away at
the age of 94 on April 17,
and Jean-Pierre Sim6on
read some of his own poet-
ry. A dinner with the poets
followed the readings.
On Sunday i...!i .ir-. the
festival moved into the
Capitainerie for the tradi-
tional book exchange. At
the same time, the associa-
tion, Saint B'Art presented
the prizes in its short-story
competitions for students
and adults. The closing
event was an al fresco
luncheon at Zion Garden,
where the poets gave a
final reading of their work.
Another magical event!
