Sand Returns To The Beach

In Saint Jean

WEEKLY KICKS

OFF FIFTH

SEASON!
Here we are again at
the beginning of ano-
ther winter season, and
we are happy to be
back on the scene with
the first issue of the St.
Barth Weekly, now in
its fifth year. Whether
you come to the island
frequently or are a first-
time visitor, we hope
you'll enjoy The Saint
Barth Weekly, the baby
brother of the Journal
de Saint Barth, our
weekly French newspa-
per. An English lan-
guage publication, The
Weekly covers the
island from all angles,
allowing you to keep
your finger on the pulse
of local politics, news,
arts, and cultural
events.
The Weekly is free and
comes out every Friday
from November
through the end of July.
Pick up a copy at your
hotel, at the tourist
office in Gustavia, or at
numerous restaurants
and boutiques.
Please feel free to offer
your suggestions about
things you'd like to see
in The Weekly, and
once you leave the
island you can stay in
touch by down-loading
The Weekly's electronic
version at www.stbarth-
weekly.com.

tripped of sand by
major erosion due to
hurricanes Luis and
Lenny, as well as walls built
along the beach and an
unsuccessful attempt to add
sand to the beach in 2000,
the beach in Saint Jean is
finally getting some of its
soft golden sand back. A
project to add sand to the
beach was launched in late
October by the hotel associ-
ation in collaboration with
the local government. The
government, which sees
this as the first step in a
global plan to protect the
bay of Saint Jean, required
that the volume of sand
dredged not be less than
30,000 cubic meters. The
goal of this is two-fold: to
return the sand to the beach
and to remove excess sand
from the coral reef. That is
why sand is being taken
from the length of the reef,
between the reef and the
beach, with the possibility
that additional sand will
also be taken from outside
the reef. The operation
should be completed by
early December. For secu-
rity measures, all nautical
activities are forbidden in
the bay, and swimming is
allowed only outside of the
zone between the end of the
runway and the south point
of the bay.
A second dredging opera-
tion may be planned for the

~E- a

spring, in order to bring
another 30,000 cubic
meters of sand to the beach,
as the total volume of miss-

ing sand is estimated
between 60,000 and 80,000
cubic meters.

FINANCING NEEDED
Nine euros: that is the cost for each cubic meter of sand
in this project. That means a total budget of approxi-
mately 270,000 euros that the hotel association must
find, as the project did not receive public funding.
A description of the project, as well as photos, can be
found a blog created by the association expressly for
this project: www.stjeanbay.blogspot.com

17th Edition of the Gustavialoppet;

Never two without
three: winner for
the past two years,
Eddy Romil of Guadeloupe
took top honors for the third
year in a row, winning the
Gustavialoppet 2007, a
10km race that celebrates
the island's Franco-Swedish
friendship. "Speedy Eddy,"
as he has been nicknamed,

place winner. Pushing her-
self to the limit (she felt a
little faint at the finish line),
Myriam Benchabane of
Saint Barth improved her
time by almost two minutes
to take first place this year,
topping her second place
win last year. There were 88
runners on the starting line
at the sports stadium in St

lans, one Italian, and a
group of 11 runners who
came especially from Swe-
den for the event.
The itinerary was the same
as last year: a large circle
around the salt pond in St.
Jean before heading toward
Gustavia past the airport
and climbing the well-
named "Col de la tour-
mente," the first challenge
of the race. The runners
then head through Public
into town and back to St.
Jean via the large hill
called the "Calvaire," the
second difficult part of the
race. The race finishes
where it began, in front of
the stadium.
The Gustavialoppet ("the
race of Gustavia" in
Swedish) was created 17
years ago. According Nils
Dufau, the current president

41 .. .. -.
of ASBAS, the Saint Barth
Friends of Sweden Associa-
tion, "the race got started
thanks to an older Swede
who took to running alone
on the roads of Saint
Barth6lemy. A few years
later, he was with a few
friends at Le Select and
they decided it would be
good to create a race open
to all runners from Saint
Barth, Sweden, and else-
where. That is how the
municipality at the time, in
close collaboration with
ASBAS, joined forces to
open this race to all interest-
ed. Since then, the Gus-
tavialoppet has continued to
evolve, and at the same
time continue to reinforce
the friendship and historic
bonds between Sweden and
Saint Barth6lemy, making
them ever stronger than
before! Today, the race is an
important event."

everyone Knows mat
traffic and parking
can be simply impos-
sible in Gustavia once the
season hits full stride. That
situation should be
improved considerably this
year with the advent of spe-
cial "blue" parking zones in
the streets along the water-
front, from the pharmacy to
the Route des Boucaniers,
as well as in the Rue de
Place d'Armes. The parking
spots along the Quai de la
R6publique will also be
"blue" temporarily, for as
long as it takes to install
parking meters, making this
the first paid parking area in
Gustavia.
Work began October 29 to
define the "blue" zone and
install the French-style park-
ing meters. The new rules
will go into effect "after an
informational campaign
explaining the new parking

Uptluols 111 Justavia,
explains Maxime Desouch-
es, a member of the island's
executive council, who is in
charge of the project. He
sees these first steps as part
of a larger plan: "We hope
that this will encourage resi-
dents to make sensible deci-
sions, such as car-pooling.
We are also aware of the
urgent need for a public
transportation system,
which is essential to reduce
the traffic which is more
congested than ever.

PARKING DISK PROVIDED
BY CAR RENTAL AGENCIES
In order to park in the
blue zone, a parking disk
will be obligatory. They do
not yet exist, but the disks
will be free for all residents
as well as tourists, who
should find a disk in each
rental car.

It's Beaujolais Time!
Every year, the staff of Saint Barth Properties invites its
clients to celebrate the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau.
The tasting of the 2007 vintage took place at the Cellier
du Gouverneur in Gustavia, on Wednesday, November
14. It is considered a classic vintage, very fruity and live-
ly, with hints of red cherry, fresh raspberry and crushed
strawberries. For the first time this year, there is also a
rost version, with 400,000 bottles for sale; a mere drop
in the bucket compared to the 50 million bottles of clas-
sic Beaujolais Nouveau, of which almost half (47%) is
sold outside of France.

Patrick Chevailler Inaugurates
the Carole G. Art Gallery
On November 15, Carole Gru-
son opened a new gallery
space for artists from the mari-
time world in the area between
her restaurant La Marine and
the Yacht Club in Gustavia.
Called the Carole G. Art Gal-
lery, this new space was inau-- m
gurated by painter Patrick
Chevailler with a show based
on underwater scenes. After
having painting all sorts of old
sailboats for 20 years, the
brushes of Patrick Chevail-
ler-who is an emergency doc-
tor and diver-took a plunge I
into the big blue to create .
colorful canvases that are
faithful representations of the world of silence under the sea. A world
you can discover at the Carole G Art Gallery in Gustavia until the end
of December.

THIRD ROTARY GARAGE SALE

Popular sales like garage
sales and tag sales allow
people and stores to clear
out basements and attics as
well as extra stock. These
events are just as popular in
Saint Barth,where the third
annual Rotary garage sale

took place last Saturday on
the grassy area behind the
Match supermarket. The
event was very successful,
with 20% of all proceeds
going to the local service
club to help finance its vari-
ous activities.
