August 9-20: Boubou Is Back

With Mc Solaar, Manu Dibango, Toires ...

WELCOME!

The Saint Barth
Weekly is happy to
be back for its third
season. The Weekly
is designed for you,
to help you put your
finger on the pulse of
the local community.
Featuring an English
r6sum6 of the top
stories of our French
newspaper
"Le Journal de Saint
Barth", as well as
original articles in
English, the Saint-
Barth Weekly is the
only completely
English-language
newspaper on the
island. It comes out
every Friday from
November through
the end of July. Our
most exciting news is
that each Friday, The
Weekly is also
available on line at
Saint-Barth Online
(www.st-barths.com),
the wonderful web
site that our friends
Laurence and Peter
O'Keefe created in
1996. Thanks to
them, you can now
download every
edition of the Saint-
Barth Weekly, so that
no matter where you
are in the world, you
can stay in contact
with the island.

The fifth edition of
Boubou's St. Barth
Festival will take place
from August 9-20 at the
Christopher Hotel, whose
charming oceanfront location
in Pointe Milou will be the
home base for the festival
throughout the month of
August. The last time the fes-
tival was held was in 2003,
but the recent announcement
of the program for
2006 erases any
lingering doubts Du
that this musical
extravaganza
would not be held
this year. Approxi-
mately 150 artists
and technicians
are expected for
the two portions
of the festival: the
first from August
9-14 with ethnic
sounds, and the
second half from
August 15-20,
which turns more
toward African
rhythms. It is not a mistake
that Yannick Noah, friend
and co-founder of the festi-
val, is not listed on the pro-
gram this year. And not that
Boubou and Yannick had a
falling out or anything, but as
Boubou explained on the
waves of Radio Transat, Yan-
nick's schedule is very busy
and the month of August is
the only time his familial
"tribe" can get together. Dur-
ing the dates of the festival,
they will be on vacation in
the Mediterranean, but that
doesn't mean he might not
appear as a last-minute
guest...
Boubou's fans will note that
some of the musicians on the
program for 2006 have par-
ticipated in the past, and will

be happy to welcome back
MC Solaar, Manu Dibango,
Toires, and Courtney
Williams, all "hot" acts at the
festival in 2003. MC will
return with friends, including
DJ Me6nlik. Courtney, now
known as C-Will, will appear
with the New York-based
urban rocker Reese.
Among the new names on
the roster one finds: James

Asher, the "pope" of world
music; DJ Rave Gomez, the
VIP DJ from CD101.9FM in
NYC who was invited by
Courtney Williams; and
Gnawa-Spirit, a young group
from Morocco, formed in
2003, and which gets its
inspiration from the Gnawa
music played in mystical cir-
cles in the Northern Sahara.
The only woman on the
schedule is the young Dajla,
whose music has been called
Soul-Poetry (complete pro-
gram on opposite page).

A new location...
Formerly held at the old
Sereno Hotel, Boubou's Fes-
tival takes place at the
Christopher Hotel this year.

Rented by the festival organ-
izers for the month of
August, the hotel will be
used to house some of the
musicians as well as techni-
cians. There are also special
packages available for guests
who would like to stay at the
festival site (www.boubous-
festival.com). Up to 1500
people are expected for the
concerts which each have
three segments: a
first concert from
9:00-10:30pm, fol-
lowing by a second
show from
11:00pm-1:00am,
followed by a DJ
until the wee hours.
To limit sound
spill, the stage will
be facing the
ocean, rather than
placed with its
back to the sea as
initially imagined.
The swimming
pool will be cov-
ered completely, in
order to accommo-
date 1500 people.
The hotel restaurant will be
operated as a VIP area, open
to everyone by reservation.
Those going to the festival
will be taken to and from the
Christopher Hotel via a sys-
tem of shuttle buses from a
central parking lot.
Festival tickets (15 euros per
evening) and passes will be
available as of mid-July at
Boubou's Do Brazil restau-
rant, as well as through the
other sponsors of the festival
(a full list will be available
soon). The Festival will also
publish an official program,
coordinated by Manu of VIP
magazine, and available three
weeks before the festival...
filled with backstage infor-
mation about the Festival.

New firefighting equipment
for Saint Barth

After acquiring a
new fire truck
designed for use at
the airport, the municipali-
ty has also replaced some
of the old, and no longer
usable, equipment at the
principal fire station in
Saint Jean. Delivered last
Friday, these items include
ten new hoses, each rough-
ly 60 feet long, and a reel
that allows five hoses of
120 feet each to be

ii

attached to each other. In
addition, two hoses and
two pre-mixers for foam
are now available for fight-
ing hydrocarbon fires. Oth-
er new equipment ranges
from four cable ramps to
cover hoses so that cars do
not drive over them and
crush them to two air
pumps for inflatable "mat-
tresses" that immobilize
people injured in a fire.

A Call For Witnesses
Following reports of acts of sexual aggression on the
island's beaches over the past few months, the national
police have asked for witnesses to step forward. Any-
one who was a witness, or victim, of such an act is
asked to contact the police headquarters in Corossol.

ut of commission for just
three days, the Forma Form
fitness center, run by Sam
Chevreul and Christian Fahrner,
closed its doors in Gustavia on Mon-
day, May 29 and reopened on Thurs-
day, June 1, in a new building in
Lurin. During the course of the move,
the center also changed its name,
from Forma Form Fitness to FormFit-
ness Saint Barth, and unveiled a new,
decidedly modern logo design, just as
modern as their modern new facility
designed in collaboration with archi-
tect Patrick Benaben. This 500-sq
meter, two-story octagonal building
(which is 200 sq meters larger than
the former space) has tinted glass that
reveals an ocean view from the inside
of the upper floor, yet you cannot see
in from the outside. Dedicated to a
sense of well-being, the building
includes a large classroom of 100 sq
meters and a space of 150 sq meters
for cardio fitness (22 stations). On the
ground floor, there is a 200 sq meter
weight lifting room with 40
machines, plus another 100 sq meters
used for relaxation areas and dressing
rooms. Outside, there is a small cafe
where one can have breakfast, get
something to drink, or later in the
day, have a light lunch. There is park-
ing available for 20 cars.
This is a big step forward for Sam
and Christian, who have been
dreaming of such a space since they

bought Forma
Form in December i
2002. A year and a
half ago, they
bought a tract of .
land from France '
Telecom in Lurin,
and envisioned a
"temple" for fit-
ness. The octagonal
shape was Christ-

ian's idea: "because it pulls all the
energy to the center," and the archi-
tectural plans were done by Patrick
Benaben. Because it is open to the

public, the FormFitness octagon
meets the most stringent safety
codes. It is also environmentally
friendly, from the use of gray water
for the flowerbeds (sponsored by
clients) to the choice of air condi-
tioning. There is also an interesting
choice for the floor covering in the
cardio and weight lifting rooms:
recycled tires. The classroom has a
parquet floor made of Wenge, a
beautiful wood from Brazil.

At the same time as the move, Sam
and Christian decided to broaden the
range of teaching at the center. As of
mid-June there will be a class called
"back school," as well as "light"
gym designed for seniors who have
asked for such a class. A new
instructor with a national diploma,
and who worked for many years
along side a physical therapist, will
teach these classes. FormFitness also
plans to get a "Power Plate," a thera-
peutic strength and conditioning
machine that utilizes whole body
vibration therapy principles, the
Power Plate[R] substantially
improves muscle strength, perform-
ance and flexibility, using 97% of
the muscles rather than the tradition-
al 40%. Also on the way is an indi-
vidual Pilates machine, that concen-
trates more on the upper body than
Pilates usually does.
FormFitness is open Monday-Friday
from 7:30am-2:30pm and 4:00-
8:00pm. Saturday hours are 7:30am-
2:30pm.
