RE: Ximenez-Fatio House Repaired Doors
Dear Norma:

This letter is for the record with regard to the two doors removed by Andy
week before last for repairs.

The exterior door to the "Library" and the exterior patio door from what is
now the entrance vestibule were removed. Both doors are apparently of solid
cypress, including the panels. The doors are of similar but not identical de-
sign; the panel moldings on both are applied (not made as an integral part of
the rails and stiles), and all nails are cut with machine-stamped heads indi-
cating a date no earlier than the 1830's. Although I had thought the panels
were hand-planed, it appears that this effect was created by the numerous
coats of paint and excessive scraping by painters. The rails, stiles and
panels were, in fact, mill-made and no hand-planing or hand-made moldingsare
present.

The following colors are matched as closely as possible with those found on
the doors. The coats of paint on both doors seem to have been identical, but
the paint colors listed below were taken from the door to the "Library".

1. Exterior Colors:
First Coat ,06 Sierra Sand
Second Oc ish
Third I 4 ? -- Gray
Fourth 6 Iron (Gray)(approximately)
.a B .ter ,c ate (Brown) (Old Pittsburgh File)

2. Interior C .. -e as exterior excep: tween the Pittsburgh Gray (third
coat) and v ray (fourth coat) tnere is paint imitating wood grain
as follows:
: :se: P-438 Oriental Ivory
Grain: D-629 Saddle Bro-wn
Color caips from the ;r; Pittsburgh Color File are enclosed.

In s r ry, the doors could have been manufactured at any time during the period
1830 1900. A more definite date cannot be established unless documentation
or urn,-sal field evidence is discovered.
Best a :gards,

Herschel E. Shepard.
