HISTORIC .ST. AUGUSTINE PRESERVATION BOARD

MEM RANDUM

April 25, 1982

TO: Robert H. Steinbach, Susan Clark, Amy Bushnell, James Smith

FROM: Bob Stewart

SUBJECT: Interpretation of Bernardo Gonzalez House

I left today's R&D meeting with an uneasy feeling about our
plans for the Gonzalez House, despite our consensus about the basic
decision. Therefore, before I, as "Curator of Implementation," can
proceed further on this, I need the following:

(1) A written proposal regarding its interpretation,
which would include:

a. The purpose of interpreting it as a commercial operation
and its role in our interpretive program as a whole
b. The time period to be presented (i.e. early or middle
18th century?)
c. The manner of interpretation (self-guided, staffed, or
what?)
d. Rough timetable, including staff training and projected
implementation date

(2) A background paper, which would include:

a. An analysis of Spanish macroeconomics of the 18th century
b. An analysis of St. Augustine microeconomics of whatever
time period we select
c. A general description of "stores" and taverns in St.
Augustine at that time -- What was their role in everyday
life of the community?
d. A basic list of what might have been sold in one of
these cantinas. Also what it might have looked like on the
inside.

I basically like this idea for interpreting the Gonzalez
House, but I need a lot more guidance and information before
proceeding.
