NATIONAL PARK SERVICE RELEASES CASTILLO
DE SAN MARCOS AND FORT MATANZAS NATIONAL
MONUMENTS' MANAGEMENT PLANS FOR REVIEW

(St. Augustine, Fla.)--NATIONAL PARK SERVICE (NPS)

PLANNERS HAVE COMPLETED A "STATEMENT FOR MANAGEMENT" FOR THE CASTILLO

DE SAN MARCOS NATIONAL MONUMENT AND ANOTHER FOR FORT MATANZAS NATIONAL

MONUMENT, IT WAS ANNOUNCED TODAY. THESE TWO DOCUMENTS, SAID SUPERINTENDENT

GEORGE F. SCHESVENTER, "OUTLINE THE PURPOSE OF EACH MONUMENT, LAND USE

OBJECTIVES, SIGNIFICANCE OF BOTH MONUMENTS' RESOURCES, AND FACTORS

THAT INFLUENCE THEIR MANAGEMENT". ACCORDING TO SCHESVENTER, THESE

DOCUMENTS WILL BE A FRAMEWORK FOR MORE DETAILED PLANNING. HE NOTED

THAT THE NPS IS INTERESTED IN INVOLVING THE PUBLIC AT EVERY STAGE OF

THE PLANNING PROCESS AND WANTS PEOPLE "TO GET IN AT THE BEGINNING OF

SUCH PLANNING BY TAKING A CLOSE LOOK AT MANAGEMENT OBJECTIVES".

These documents, according to the NPS officials, are
important first stages in comprehensive operational and developmental
planning for both National Monuments that have a combined visitation of
over 1 million people a year. Both the Castillo de San Marcos, which
was begun in 1672, and Fort Matanzas, which was begun by the Spanish also
in 1740, are unique examples of European military architecture and
represent the presence, since 1565, of Spain in what is now the
Southeastern United States.

Copies of these documents will be available to all
interested parties at the Monument headquarters in St. Augustine.
Superintendent Schesventer noted that comments or questions can be
directed to park staff members by telephone (904/829-6506) or by
writing to him at #1 Castillo Drive, St. Augustine, Florida 32084
before October 16, 1978.
