ARCHITECTURE
This six foot tall bronze statue of Ponce de Leon is located in the
middle of a park that stands between the Plaza and the Bridge of Lions. The
statue, erected in 1923, is set on a massive granite base about ten feet
high, with carved garlands, festoons, and other ornamentation. The replica
looks north pointing forward with the index finger of his right hand. The
surrounding area has been pleasantly landscaped.

HISTORY
The statue of Ponce de Leon west of the Bridge of Lions was a gift of
prominent resident and physician, Dr. Andrew Anderson. Dr. Anderson arranged
to have a replica made of the famous statue of Ponce de Leon which stands
near the explorers grave in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Gorham Manufacturing
Company of Providence, Rhode Island, cast the mould and fashioned the base.(1)
Anderson, a community minded resident, presented the statue on Armistice Day,
1923. Members of his family have more recently contributed to the beautifi-
cation of the circle on which it stands.(2)
