SUBJECT: Handicap Ramp For East Wing/Lobby Project
There is a detail in the construction project here at Government House
that was inadvertently overlooked during Mr. Shepard's tour. I felt that
you would want to be made aware of the configuration of the handicap ramp
that has been designed to be constructed as part of this project. This ramp
is required by the state mandate to allow access for the physically imparied
to the lobby area.
What interested Mr. Shepard and myself was that the visual intrusion of
the ramp be minimized. In that regard, we thought its placement in the
courtyard would be most effective. It would be "U" shaped and would lead
into the lobby through an existing door that is, at present, rarely utilized.
It would be screened by both the courtyard wall and appropriate plantings.
It would allow a person to travel from the East Wing to the higher level
lobby area by exiting under the loggia, travelling through the courtyard
and up to the lobby.
I have enclosed blueprint reproductions of the placement of the ramp
and an elevation. Any comments you have would be appreciated. We hope to
have the ramp completed by March 10, 1989.
