Postal Department

Checking New Site
Congressman D. R. (Billy) Matthews confirmed today
that the Post Office Department has given a high priority
to re-location of the St. Augustine Post Office and said he6
was hopeful that thepresent postal building, home of
Spanish governors of Florida, can be used as a quadricen-
tennial exhibit.
Congressman Matthews tol
the Record this morning in a
telephone conversation that the
postal department has recom.
menided a new post office for St.
Augustine and that C. E. Glad-
den, regional director for the
Post Office Department, Atlan-
ta, has advised him that the de-
partmient is currently, checkini'
sites for a new post office here.
Congressman :Matthe.es saAd
that when a new post office is
established hete that'the present
historical structure would bE
turned over to the General Serv-
ices Adminkstration for disposal.
He said that it is anticipated that
some arrangement can be reach-
ed -whereby the building could
then be turned over to the Fed-
eral Quadricentennial Commis-
sion, appointed by the late Pres-
'ident John F. Kennedy, for use
iii the quadricentennial program
and as an exhibition center. Pe
said, however, that details of
such a transfer are not yet com-
pleted.
The National Park Service, In
response to inquiries about a pos-
sible role in use of the present
building as a quadricentennial
exhibit, said this morning that
as, far'as can be determined at
this time that the building did
.not meet its criteria as a historic
ical site.
Supt. Bert, C. Roberts said,
however, that the Federal Quad-
ricentennial Commission Execu-
tive -Committee has. inquired
about National Park Service as-
sistance in slight modification of
the building as a U. S. exhibi-
tion center and in exhibit plan-
ning. Roberts said that the park
service would be glad to partici-
pate in providing this type of
service with the understanding
that it would be reimbursed for
funds which'it would expend.
The act creating the Quadri-
centennial Commission calls for
all of its assets to be automati-
cally conveyed to the 'National
Park Service at the end of its
life and some disposition of the
building would have to be d&-
termined at that time if it Is
conveyed to the anniversary
agency.
The confirmation by Rep. Ma.
thews bears out rumors, which
have been prevalent here during
the past week, that a new post
office was being planned here.
