220; a leste, o Oceano Indico; e a oeste, a Rodsia. A capital
Rodsia, Niassalndia e Congo do Sul.

1.535 asiticos e 1.929 mestios portugueses e estrangeiros.
Importao ................ 5.707.740$
Exportao ................ 2.696.543$
Reexportao .............. 663.518$
Baldeao .................. 4.243.058$
Trnsito ................... 54.795.153$
Cabotagem ................ 1.382.962$
total 69.489.004$

O movimento do porto,
pode julgar-se pelos dados seguintes, referentes a 1927:
Nmero de navios entrados ....... 594
Tonelagem ....................... 2.568.142
Carga descarregada ............... 298.865
,, carregada .................. 383.736
Passageiros desembarcados ......... 7.348
S embarcados ........... 4.890
Sero adquiridos novos
guindastes a vapor e levados a efeito outros melhoramentos
importantes que viro diminuir enormemente algumas das
dificuldades presents.

priedade, um centro agrcola, desde as espcies tropicais at
pertencem a portugueses.
A principal cultural o milho, cuja produo represen-
tada em 1927, por 33.500:000 quilos; a seguir o amendoim,
1.145:000; sizal 8o1:ooo; algodo I.816:602, alm de outros
produtos como gergelim, feijo, cocos, tabaco, etc.
So famosas as madeiras do territrio, prprias para

medidas largamente difundidas pelas entidades competentes
das raas, predominando o cuidado dedicado espcie bovina,
onde so empregados os melhores reprodutores.
Existem duas companhias aucareiras importantes: a Sena

Sugar Estates e a Companhia Colonial do Buzi. A primeira
Beira.
A indstria mineira data j de pocas remotas. A energia
hidraulica do territrio reduz considervelmente o custo do
trabalho, quer aplicada directamente como fora motriz, quer
transformada em energia elctrica.
A principal produo do ouro e prata explorada por
uma sociedade inglesa com sde em Londres. Esta emprsa
tem registados actualmente 689 claims de aluvio. O estanho
tambm abunda no territrio, explorado em grande escala
pela Manica Tin Ltd.
Trabalha-se tambm activamente na pesquisa e valorizao
do asbesto.

parties da Colnia, debaixo da administrao direct do Estado;

nalidades diversas, e onde o Govrno concede as maiores

TERRITORY OF MANICA AND SOFALA

(COMPANHIA DE MOAMBIQUE)

Approximately one fifth of the territory of the
V *colony of Mozambique, i. e. about 136.000
square kilometres, is under the administration
of the Companhia de Moambique, a privi-
leged enterprise, with sovereign rights which were granted
to it in 1891, and which permit it to institute within the ter-
ritory an administrative organization, identical with that of
any other colony, with a complete public service and respec-
tive officials, and which publishes an Official Bulletin once
every fortnight.
The territory governed by the Companhia de Moam-
bique borders in the north upon the Zambeze river; in the
south upon the parallel of 220; in the east upon the Indian
Ocean; in the west upon Rhodesia. The capital of this ter-
ritory is called Beira, a town situated at the mouth of the
river Pungu, which serves as a sea-port for the territory, as
well as for Rhodesia, Nyassaland and the South Congo.
It is due to the favourable conditions of its port, that
Beira has become of such importance. The obvious progress,

which this town has made during the last years, is an un-
mistakable sign of a most prosperous future.
In order to appreciate the development of the town of
Beira, it is only necessary to mention, that it is but a few
years ago, that its sandy roads would not permit any motor-
vehicle traffic, while to-day, thanks to the labour which has
been spent upon them, more than 15o of these vehicles make
constant use of them.
The simplest proof of the progress which this capital of
the territory has made lies in the rapid increase of the number
of its houses. Thus, in 1910, hardly 469 public buildings and
private houses existed, whereas in 1928 there were more than
900, built in the outskirts of the commercial part of the town,
principally within the quarter called "Ponta Gea".
By taking the number of its European inhabitants into
consideration, one can easily understand -the rapid progress
made by this town. A remarkable fact is, that the number
of Europeans existing there, namely 860 in 1910 and 1.425 in
1920, increased very suddenly to 2.425 souls in 1927.

That is the best sign of the progress which Beira has
made, being as it were, a gateway leading to the open sea,
to the Companhia de Moambique and to the regions west
of the latter.

The climate of the whole territory is suitable for the
purposes of European colonization. One can assume the average
annual temperature, according to observations made during
the course of several years, at 24 C. The rainy season begins
in November and lasts until March; the average amount of
rain per annum is 1.470,6 mm.
The territory of the Companhia de Moambique is
divided into 17 districts and has a population of 325.488
natives, 4.894 Europeans, of which 2.239 are of Portuguese
nationality, and the remaining 2.65 of 20 different nationalities,
1.535 Asiatics, 1.929 Portuguese and other foreign mestizos.
The total amount of business transacted within the
whole territory in 1927 can be gathered from the following
figures, given in escudos in gold:
Import .......................... 5.707.740
Export .......................... 2.696.543
Re-export ....................... 663.518
Discharge from ship to ship ...... 4.243.058
Transit trade .................... 54.795.153
Coasting trade ................... 1.382.962
total 69.489.004
equal to 15.442.000, of which 66.487.032 escudos, equal
to 14.774.896 concerns the Customs and Railway Authorities
(Beira), and stands to prove that the great commercial centre
of the territory is actually Beira.

And as a proof that this commercial development is
progressing, the following figures may be given:
In 1924 .. ...................... 56.459.024
In 1925 ............. ........... 59.295.100
In 1926 ......................... 50.093.171
In 1927 ......................... . . 69.143.717
The Customs returns in 1927 show a sum of 1.092.618
escudos in gold, equal to 242.817, of which 953.899 escudos,
equal to 211.977 were levied in Beira.
The port of Beira offers all facilities to vessels which make
use of this harbour. On account of the splendid light-houses
and land-marks distributed along the coast of the territory,
ali vessels can enter or leave the port during the night, an
advantage which exists along the entire coast of the colony
of Mozambique. The installations are kept in the best of
condition, thus rendering navigation considerable help. The
important development of the port can be best judged from
the following figures, referring to 1927:
Number of incoming vessels ....... 594
Tonnage of same.................. 2.568.142
Cargo discharged .................. 298.865 tons
Cargo loaded ..................... 383.736 ,,
Passengers disembarked ............ 7.348
Passengers embarked .............. 4.890
A new commercial harbour is under construction at
Beira, at a cost of about 2.000.000. The first section will be
finished at about the middle of the present year; the work
includes a new landing stage, having a length of 130 metres,
a continuation of the quay which the Railway Company, the
"Beira Railway", has constructed; a landing stage for large

VIII

vessels, having a length of I80 metres, and dredging work
of more than 2.000.000 cubic metres capacity. New steam
cranes will be acquired, and other important improvements
will be made, which will greatly diminish the drawbacks still
in existence.

Without any doubt, the chief source of riches of the
territory is its agriculture. It can call itself an agricultural
centre in the full sense of the word, with reference to the
tropical produce it cultivates, even to produce which are also
cultivated in Europe.
At present, the area used for agricultural purposes is
more than 70.000 hectares, which are divided up into about
360 landed properties, of which 202 belong to Portuguese.
The principal product grown is maize, the amount of
which was 33.500.000 kilos in 1927; then 1.145.000 kilos of
pea-nuts; 81o.ooo kilos of sizal and 1.816.602 kilos of cotton,
in addition to which there are other products such as sesam,
haricot beans, cocoa-nuts, tobacco, etc.
The territory is famous for its timber, which can be
used for ali purposes. The administration of the Companhia
de Moambique has facilitated the granting of concessions for
districts set apart for agricultural purposes, and aids ali agri-
culturists as far as at ali possible, no matter whether they are
Portuguese, or are foreigners.
Cattle-breeding is increasing, thanks to the competent
endeavours of the authorities in the territory for improving
and purifying the races, especially regarding the care taken
with bovines, to which purpose the best procreators are
employed.

The number of animals existing in 1927 was as follows:
Cattle .......................... 43.227
G oats .......................... 31.755
Sheep .......................... 4.700
Swine ......................... 12.875
to which other kinds of less importance must be added.
The sugar industry is the one which prospers most in
the territory. There are two important companies engaged
in this line of business; The "Sena Sugar Estates" and the
"Companhia Colonial do Buzi". The former has sugar-cane
plantations covering a total area of 5.55 hectars, out of which
about 23.000 tons of sugar were produced in 1927; the latter
possesses about 3.000 hectares, upon which sugar-cane is grown,
which last year produced 15.000 tons of sugar. Other industries
are to be found in the territory in the neighbourhood of
Beira, where fishing is carried on, firms handling salt, lime
and timber, and also quarries, a tobacco factory and a brick
factory, both in the outskirts of Beira.
The mining industry dates back to very remote times.
The water-power which is made use of within the territory
very considerably reduces the cost of labour, and is either
applied direct as motive power, or, after having been trans-
formed into electric energy.
The principal deposits of gold and silver are being ex-
ploited by a British company, which has its domicile in London.
This concern has at present 689 claims. There is a great
quantity of tin within the Territory which is exploited on a
very large scale by the "Manica Tin Ltd.".
Strong endeavours are being made for finding and
utilizing asbestos.

The "Manica Trust", a Portuguese company is working
in the Inhaminga region in search of petroleum, and has
already sunk wells to the depth of 800 metres. The exploitation
of copper, which was formerly carried on, has been suspended
for the present.
The number of claims issued in connection with mining
enterprises, namely 1.347, and the number of licences authorizing
research work amounting to 573, are the best proof, that this
industry is certainly not at a standstill.

With regard to communication by road and rail, the
territory has two important railway lines, the one connecting
the port of Beira with Rhodesia and the South Congo, the
other connecting the same port with the northern boundary
of the territory, thus serving as a natural discharge of goods
from Tte and the British Territory of Nyassaland. As soon
as the bridge over the Zambeze has been built, the efficiency
of this railway will be greatly increased.
The network of existing roads is already most important,
traversing as they do the whole territory of the Companhia
de Moambique from the north to the south, that is to say,
connecting the two parts of the colony which are under the
direct administration of the Government, in other words,
putting the district of Tte into connection with that of Inham-
bane, which in its part is connected with the capital of the
colony, Loureno Marques. Thus a through communication
is established running from the north to the south of the colony.

A network of roads is in course of construction, stretching
out in every direction, which will in time be one of the most
important ones within the colony of Mozambique. At present
it has an approximate length of 3.200 kilometres.

The Government of the territory of the Companhia
de Moambique has not neglected the question of public
education. Thirty-one schools are distributed throughout the
whole of the Territory, instructing in accordance with the
mentality of the natives, and in conjunction with elementary
instruction supply apprentices for various professions. It is
a curious thing to note that no foreign Mission exists within
the territory of the Companhia de Moambique, thus the
work of nationalizing the native masses is greatly facilitated.

This cosmopolitan territory, in which 26 different
nationalities abode, which has a Government making the very
best concessions to everyone who has the desire to settle
in this part of the world, with a seaport which is the gateway
to Rhodesia, Nyassaland and the South Congo, so fertile and
prosperous at present, leaves no doubt whatsoever as to its
future, which latter is further, safeguarded by the beauty of
its climate, the enormous traffic within its ports, its important
network of roads and railways, its agricultural development,
and above ali, by the principal factor governing all colonial
endeavours, by the intensive progressive and productive
labour of its thousands of inhabitants.

tion europenne. On peut considrer sa temperature annuelle,
suivant 1'observation durant quelques annes, 24' C. La
priode des pluies commence en Novembre et finit en Mars;
Importation .......... 5.707.740 escudos or
Exportation .......... 2.696.543 ,,,
Rexportation ........ 663.518 ,,,
Transbordement ..... 4.243.058 ,,,
Transit .............. 54.795.153 ,
Cabotage ............ 1.382.962 ,,

69.489.004 escudos or

En 1924 ............ 56.459.024 escudos or
,, 1925 ........... 59.295.100
1926 ............ 50.093.171 .
1927 ............ 69.143.717

section doivent tre conclus vers la moiti de l'anne courante;
D'autres

amliorations importantes viendront normment diminuer

gelim), haricots, cocos, tabac, etc.

cot du travail, soit applique directement come force
enregistre actuellement 689 claims d'alluvion. L'tain
