QUELIMANE

temperature mxima raramente atinge 380.

cuja maior elevao apresenta 2:700 metros aproximadamente.

A principal cultural o coqueiro, ocupando actualmente
ladas; o acar, 29:000; o milho, 4:900; o sizal, 2:600; etc.
Cocos ................... .. 750:000 (ouro)
Acar .................... 770:700$ ,,
Sizal ...................... 465:630$ ,
Algodo ................... I80:45o$ ,
M ilho ..................... 123:700$ ,
Tabaco ................... 54:000 ooo$
Cocos .................... 626:77o$ (ouro)
M ilho .................... 320:000ooo$
Mandioca ................. ..6oo:ooo$ ,,
Arroz ... ............... i.o8o:ooo0 ,,
M apira ................... 945 :ooo$ ,,
Amendoim ................ 160:ooo$ ,,

portncia.
Infelizmente grande parte do distrito est infectado pela
mosca tz-tz, dificultando a criao do gado bovino e, con-
Contudo, regies
granitos, formando numerosos Kopjes.

du Madal, Emprsa Agrcola do Lugela, Companhia do Luabo
etc. A rea total agricultada de 22:000 hectares, plantados
de cana sacarina.
A Emprsa Agrcola do Lugela, Ltd. dedica-se
especialmente agriculture, possuindo grandes plantaes de

sizal e explorando tambm, em grande escala, o kapok e o
tabaco.

actividade agrcola, o desenvolvimento industrial do distrito
Qusi todas as companhias citadas possuem fbricas, oficinas
de construco e de reparao dotadas de maquinismos
modernos. Assim, a Companhia da Zambzia, possui fbricas
para a preparao do sizal, para tabaco e algodo e para moa-
gem. A Emprsa Agrcola do Lugela possui, da mesma forma,
fbricas para a preparao do sizal e do algodo, alm de
vrias estufas modernas para tabaco. A Sena Sugar Estates,
fbricas importantes de acar, bem como a Companhia do
Boror. As companhias e particulares exploram extensas salinas
s companhias.

litoral so enormes as dificuldades a vencer para o estabeleci-

mento de ligaes, devido a existncia de pantnos conse-
cutivos e numerosos.
Quelimane tornar-se-h o maior factor do progress do
distrito.
Tem o distrito seis portos, a saber: Chinde, Quelimane,
Macuze, Pebane, Moebase e Naburi.
o seguinte: mercadorias entradas, 39:700 toneladas; sadas,
46:270.

qusi todos de alvenaria; as ruas so bem traadas e largas.
a vila iluminada a luz elctrica.

QUELIMANE

THE CERESS" OF MOZAMBIQUE

n 1544 the village of Quelimane started as
a trading settlement on the coast, like the
coastal establishments of the Portuguese. It
was not until 1761, that the small village was
made into a town. The present frontiers of the district of
Quelimane, situated between the parallels of 15 and 190 South,
are as follows: It borders in the north upon the district of
Mozambique, in the south, upon the territory of the Com-
panhia de Moambique, in the west, upon the district of Tte
and a part of the British colony of Nyassaland, in the east,
upon the Indian Ocean.
The district of Qelimane has at the present moment
a population of 872.000 natives, and I.16o Europeans, of which
868 are men and the rest, namely 292, women. In addition to
these, there are 1.200 natives of India, of Portugal and British,
and about 950 mestizos.
The district covers an area of approximately 130.000 square
kilometres. There is no reason to be afraid of its climate,
although it is subject to tropical conditions. The average

temperature, according to observations made in the course of
several years, is 24.860. The maximum temperature rarely
comes up to 380. The average quantity of rain, also the result
of several years of observation, amounts to 1.884,5 mm. How-
ever, the temperature is not the same within the whole of the
district, as there are regions, situated at a height of 1.500 metres
above the levei of the sea, with all conditions of living suit-
able for European colonization.
The mountainous regions of the district occupy a large
area, gently rising from the coast up to the interior. The
greatest altitude is called Montes Namuli, the maximum height
of which is approximately 2.700 metres.
Numerous rivers flow through the whole of the district,
of which one, the most important one, the Zambeze, forms the
border in the south, and then the Licungo, of which the
tributary, the Lugela, will possibly be utilized for the genera-
tion of an appreciable amount of electric energy.
Quelimane is one of the districts of the colony of Mozam-
bique, where agriculture has thrived most, being also the

one colony which possesses the most suitable soil and climate
for its development. One can also say without exaggeration,
that its agricultural development represents an effort on the
part of European colonization, such as up till now has very
rarely been made, in any of the Portuguese colonies.
The principal branch of agriculture is that of cocoa-nut
palms, which at the present time cover an area of 32.000 hec-
tares, the trees numbering approximately 5.400.000, 2.700.000
of which are more or less in an advanced state of cultivation.
The next most important product, sugar-cane, covers an area
of 9.000 hectares; then 7.600 hectares of sizal, 6.800 of
maize, etc.
The average amount of copra exported, comes up to
9.300 tons, 29.000 tons of sugar, 4.900 tons of maize, 2.600 tons
of sizal, etc.
Thevalue of the produce resulting from European en-
deavours can be valued at 3.500 contos ( 750.000), the natives
and Asiatics contributing to the export 8.000 tons of copra,
and about 1.6oo tons of ground-nuts.
The value of the produce derived from the European
agricultural work can be taken in round figures as follows:
Cocoa-nuts ............ 750.000 escudos gold
Sugar .......... ...... 770.700
Sizal .................. 465.630
Cotton ................ 180.450
M aize ................ 123.700
Tobacco .............. 54.000o
without taking the other produce of less importance into
account.
The value of the native produce is also most important,
as is shown by the following figures:

Cocoa-nuts ........... 626.770 escudos gold
M aize ............... 320.000
Manioc .............. 1.6oo.ooo
Rice ................ 1.080.000 o
Mapira .............. 945.000
Ground-nuts ......... I6o.ooo0
in addition to other produce, the value of which is of less
importance.
Unfortunately, a large portion of the district is infected
by the Tz-tz fly, which makes the breeding of cattle most
difficult, and consequently also of employing it for tilling
and working the soil. In spite of that, the number of head of
cattle of ali species can be taken at 33.000 of which 8.000 are
bovines, I6.ooo sheep, 7.000 swine and others of different
kinds.
In addition to the Tz-tz fly, there are a great many wild
animals, which are found to be a great obstacle to the breed-
ing of domestic animals. There are however regions within
the district of Quelimane, where this is possible, for instance
the valleys of the Chire and Zambeze are considered free from
sleeping illness, principally in the neighbourhood of the rivers.
In the regions near the coast, large herds of cattle are kept
preferably in parts where agriculture flourishes.
A great variety of wild animals are to be found within
the fauna of the whole of the district, especially of the bovine
family, there being many different kinds of antelopes, buf-
faloes and others. The lion and the rhinoceros are to be found
distributed ali over the district. Within the rivers there are
a great many hippopotamus and crocodiles.
With regard to the geology of the district, the latter is
considered to consist of ancient terrestrial formations, in which

there appear gneiss rocks and granite forming numerous
"Kopjes". It is granite of fine grain, used for constructional
purposes, and clay is also very frequently found in ali parts,
made use of for making tiles and pottery.

There are in Quelimane, various and important companies,
competing in its development, in addition to enterprises of
private individuals, who are occupied with agriculture. The
following ones, Companhia da Zambezia, Companhia do
Boror, Socit du Madal, Emprsa Agricola do Lugela,
Companhia do Luabo and Sena Sugar Estates, have con-
cessions running for long periods.
The Companhia da Zambezia possesses about 500.000
cocoa-nut trees. The firm has also sizal plantations, which
are considered to be the largest in the world, covering, as
they do, a area of three thousand hectares.
In 1928, the value of the copra and sizal exported was
50.ooo and 35.000, respectively. The firm has ships plying
between Chinde and Tte, and ali other resources of a pro-
gressive enterprise.
The Companhia do Boror, mostly employed with agri-
culture, has ali the same also other branches of business.
This firm possesses the largest number of cocoa-nut trees
belonging to one proprietor in the world, there being at the
present moment 2.150.000 trees planted within their property.
The sizal plantations have at the present moment 13.ooo.ooo000
plants, and two factories for preparing and packing the fibre,
of which they produce 2.800 tons within a short period.
The Socit du Madal, dedicating itself to general com-
merce, exploits as a branch of agriculture, enormous palm

woods of thousands of cocoa-nut trees, and also trades in
bark of the mango-tree.
The Sena Sugar Estates Ltd. are manufacturers of sugar.
They are the proprietors of several factories, and have a total
capacity of 6o.ooo tons. In addition to a railway having a
length of 297 kilometres, they have a number of ships, hos-
pitais, etc., and the estate covers an area of 22.000 hectares,
upon which sugar-cane only is planted.
The Empresa Agricola do Lugela Ltd. is especially
employed in agricultural work, possessing large sizal planta-
tions, and exploiting also capoc and tobacco on a grand scale.
Although one cannot place upon the same levei the
agricultural activity with the industrial development of the
district, yet the latter is to a certain extent worthy of attention.
Nearly ali of the companies enumerated possess factories,
constructional and repair shops, fitted out with modern
machinery. Thus, the Companhia da Zambezia, has factories
for the preparation of sizal, for tobacco and cotton, and also
some mills. The Empresa Agricola do Lugela possesses fac-
tories for preparing sizal and cotton, also various modern
drying plants for tobacco. The Sena Sugar Estates, important
factories of sugar, is much like the Companhia do Boror.
Companies and private individuals exploit extensive salines.
There are several yards for building launches for the com-
panies. In general, ali of the agriculturists make use of modern
machinery for ginning the cotton.
Quelimane is in the very best position to make progress
in respect of various industrial enterprises, thanks to the
great quantity of first-class material, which exists within the
whole district.

Quelimane is a district in which the topographic condi-
tions render it difficult to construct a large network of roads
of communication.
All the same, there exist to-day already, within the in-
terior of the district, regions with magnificent roads and
sufficient bridges, which will take the weight of any vehicle.
At the present moment, a sufficient number of roads are under
construction. In the coastal zone, one has enormous difficulties
to overcome for the establishment of connections, due to the
existence of swamps, which are very numerous.
Some companies support the efforts of the State in a
most noteworthy manner, building a great number of roads
for the transport of their produce.
Communication is kept up by a railway having a length
of 145 kilometres, which connects Quelimane with the river
Lugela. At the present moment, several bridges are being
constructed, one of which is of iron, having a length of
55 metres, approximately. After this task has been finished,
the railway of Quelimane will become the most progressive
factor of the district.
There are the following six ports within the district:
Chinde, Quelimane, Macuze, Pebane, Moebase and Naburi.
The ports of Quelimane and Pebane can take ships of 3.000 tons,
the others of i.ooo tons.

The general amount of merchandise handled within the
six ports was as follows: Incoming goods 39.700 tons, out-
going goods 46.270 tons.

The town of Quelimane, the chief place of the district,
is an important port and has a great future. It possesses various
landed properties, ali or nearly all built of stone. The streets
are well laid out and broad. The town has electric light. In
the principal streets a "Decauville" rail track is laid, upon
which run the typical waggons, which the inhabitants use for
their own conveyance.
In bygone days the town of Quelimane, which not many
years ago already, made a favourable impression was worthy
of the praise of comtemporaries and was considered to be the
site of the greatest commercial development of the colony.

Meditating over the words which have remained as a
feeble recapitulation, at the preface of this album, stopping
the flow of my pen, want of faith would be disbelief, if in a
rapid survey, one would not be able to say of the district of
Quelimane the same which was said of the town years ago:...
considered the site of the greatest commercial development
of the colony!

QUELIMANE

utilis come centre de force lectrique apprciable.

La copra exporte a surpass en moyenne 9.300 tonnes;
Cocos ........... 750.000 escudos d'or
Sucre ............ 770.700 ,
Sizal ............. 465.630 ,
Coton ........... 180.450o .
M ais ............ 123.700 ,
Tabac ........... 54.000o
Cocos .......... 626.770 escudos d'or
Mais .......... 3 zo.ooo 0 ,,
Mandioca ....... 1,6oo.ooo ,, ,,
Riz............. 1,o8o.ooo ,, ,,
Mapira ......... 945.000o

les Companhia da Zambezia, Companhia do Boror, Socit
du Madal, Emprsa Agrcola do Lugela, Companhia do Luabo
et Sena Sugar Estates, concessionnaires longs terms.
La Companhia da Zambezia possde environ 500.000
cocotiers.
entreprise progressante.

communications. Pourtant il existe dj aujourd'hui, l'in-

D'normes
et Pebane peuvent donner accs des navires de 3000 tonnes;
classes comme suit: marchandises rescues, 39.700 tonnes;
expdies 46.270 tonnes.

pourrait just titre se qualifier d'incrdule si l'on n'arrivait
