OS SEUS EDIFCIOS PBLICOS

IDEA SUMRIA DO PORTO E CAMINHOS DE FERRO

hoje lugar comum dizer-se que Loureno
Marques uma cidade modern, de aspect
interessante e, sobretudo, tpico.
SA confirmar estas palavras que no so
Loureno Marques capital.
Ainda h vinte e cinco anos, no existia a maior parte
dsses edifcios.

trfego.
Africa do Sul l
A primeira carvoeira ergue a alguns metros um
duzido para o poro do navio. A segunda, trabalha por um
sistema assaz engenhoso, dando tambem ptimos resultados.

sbre a baa.
margem onde fica situada a cidade. O acesso ao prto torna-
se fcil para qualquer embarcao. O trajecto desde o anco-
radouro at ao mar, est excelentemente marcado por meio
crescente do cais Gorjo, em Loureno Marques, diremos
regando 407:333 e carregando 577:180.

O caminho de ferro e prto so, enfim, as duas foras
Figuram porm, neste Album, a par dste grandioso es-
fro, representado pela ligao daqueles dois elements,
outras construes, que do especial relvo cidade. Ver
nele o leitor, o esplndido edifcio do Departamento Martimo,

boa colheita do ensino, o Museu Provincial, instalado no
ictiologia, flora, mineralogia, etc., o Observatrio Campos

vida intima, so o maior e melhor atestado da capacidade
colonizadora dos portuguses.

LOURENO MARQUES

A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PUBLIC BUILDINGS,
PORT AND RAILWAY

t is now-a-days quite a usual thing to say, that
Loureno Marques is a modern town, having
an interesting, and above all, typical appear-
ance. In order to confirm what we have just
said and is not exaggerated, the photos which illustrate this
Album, and also the others which are meant to complement
them, will show us the public buildings, giving us an idea of the
localities in which are situated the various premises in which
the office work is done in the interests of the Public Service
of the Colony, of which Loureno Marques is the capital.
The greater part of these buildings did not exist twenty-
five years ago. It can therefore be taken for granted, that having
been built but so recently, they are constructed according
to most aestetic principles and ensure the best working fa-
cilities. Some of them are closely associated with the progress
of the town, and even with that of the Colony.

Thus it is, that the Railway Station, which cost about
6o,ooo and which can rival with most of its kind in the
whole of South Africa, brings to our mind the network of rail-

way lines, in connection with that of the progressive, enor-
mous Union of South Africa, facilitating as is does, the trans-
port of merchandise, of which a considerable quantity is in-
tended for the centres of commerce of that country.
The mere study of the map of South Africa, shows,
that the distance between the great commercial centre Johannes-
burg and the ports of the Union, is greater than the 640 kilo-
metres which separates it from Loureno Marques. Some
data relating to the railway of Loureno Marques are worth
mentioning. In 1927, its returns amounted to about 470,000;
the goods transported had a weight of i,o8o,ooo tons; and the
number of passengers was 340,000, bringing a return of
7,686. The amount of coal transported for export purposes,
was 536,000 tons, equal to a return of 57,000.
The rolling stock of the railway is of best quality, com-
prising modern carriages with ali commodities, and loco-
motives of great tractive power.

The imposing Gorjo Quay reminds us in its turn of the
fine port of Loureno Marques, which can well be proud of

its existence, being, if not the best, one of the best ports, and
best constructed ones, of the whole of East and West Africa.
An excellent quay, constructed of ferro-concrete, has cost
more than 500,000. It is 1,620 metres in length, and at present
it is being lengthened, because it was found insufficient for
coping with the traffic. It affords berth, at one and the same time,
to 12 ships of large tonnage. Along the quay there are eleven
very spacious warehouses for storing the goods which leave and
enter the port, and also for those which are only in transit.
These warehouses cover an area of 23,000 squaremetres.
For loading and discharging purposes there are 23 elec-
tric cranes, of which fifteen can take a load of 5 tons, three
of 3 tons, one of 8 tons, two of 10 and another of 6o tons,
which has no equal in the whole of South Africa.
There are also two magnificent coal handling plants in
the port; the one of Mac Miller type cost about 90,000, the
other, of the Provay type, 13o,ooo, and can handle 4,800 tons
per working day.
Being in the possession of these two plants, the port of
Loureno Marques is brilliantly equipped for loading and un-
loading coal. The first-named plant lifts a loaded waggon
several metres high, then tipples it over, in order that it may
discharge its contents into the hold of the ship. The second
plant also operates in a most efficient manner.
The port has also a drydock, which cost more than
0o,ooo, and which is without doubt one of the most im-
portant acquisitions made during the last few years.
At present one has the intention of increasing the number
of cranes, and in a short time a cold-storage house will be
built, the cost of which has been estimated at 50,000.

When mentioning the quay, one must not refrain from
saying some few words with regard to the bay.
The stretch of water forming the Bay of Loureno
Marques has a length of 36 kilometres from its mouth to the
shore upon which the town is situated. The port is most
easily accessible to every kind of vessel. The course from
the anchorage to the open sea is excellently marked by means
of buoys and lights.
In order that the reader may get a better idea of the con-
tinually increasing importance of the Gorjo Bay at Loureno
Marques, let the following be said:
During the year 1927, 778 vessels entered the port,
having a gross tonnage of 3,595,895 tons; they discharged
407,333 tons and loaded 577,180 tons.

The railway and the port are in short the two chief factors
responsible for the progress which is being made, and com-
plete statistics are kept, showing how wonderful the latter
really is.
But in addition to the great development due to the
combined working of these two factors, there are also other
most important elements shown within this album, which
greatly add to the importance of the town. The reader will
see here the wonderful building of the Naval Department,
the Miguel Bombarda Hospital, a modern institution equipped
with everything necessary for use in such a building, the
Ministry of Finance, the Post Office, the Office of the President
of the Republic, the new Offices of Public Works, the Muni-
cipal Market, an institution typical of Africa, the 5 de Outubro
Lyceum, where a complete course of study is held, the new

i' de Janeiro Central School, a building uniting the very
best conditions for the purposes of education, the Provincial
Museum, standing within the Public Gardens, and which
contains entomology, ichtiology, flora, mineralogy, etc. sec-
tions. The Campos Rodrigues Observatory and several other
buildings are sure not to escape the eye of the reader.
Its general appearance, and more so that of the town
proper, is a reflexion of the ardent and intensive work done
by the Portuguese, who, in less than 25 years, have managed
day by day and step by step, to build up a town and construct
within it one of the finest ports in the world.

There are fine and great colonial nations who have ac-
complished enormous tasks within their colonies, great
nations, rich nations, who with a growing number of inhabi-
tants, do not lack of either arms or resources or of other
material of initial importance for the purposes of colonization.
But none but Portugal, considering its small size and also the
small number of inhabitants, has accomplished work so worthy
of admiration as that which it is manifesting in East Africa.
Loureno Marques, its commerce, its port, its inner life,
are the greatest and best proof for the colonizing abilities of
the Portuguese.

Civil Engineer, Hamburg.)

LOURENO MARQUES

L'autre a cot 130,000
et charge 4,800 tonnes par jour de travail. Elle est du type
Provay.
